The Consumer Price Index (CPI) release answers two different questions: how consumer prices changed over the latest month and how they compare with the same month a year earlier. To read it well, first identify the release month and CPI measure, then separate monthly from 12-month changes, check whether each figure is seasonally adjusted, and examine category weights and contributions rather than relying on the headline.
Markets do not react to a CPI number in isolation. Investors compare it with expectations and reassess inflation persistence, the likely Federal Reserve policy path, interest rates and risk conditions. That process can move Treasury yields, equities, currencies and inflation-linked securities, but no single CPI release guarantees a particular market direction.
What the CPI measures
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) defines the Consumer Price Index as the average change over time in prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. The commonly quoted CPI-U covers All Urban Consumers and represents the U.S. city average.

The index is built from detailed item-area price indexes and aggregated into broader categories. The headline all-items number is therefore a weighted result: both a category’s price movement and its importance in consumer spending affect its influence on the total.
Which release are you reading?
As of the authoritative date in the available BLS material, the latest surfaced release is the August 2026 CPI report. It covers CPI-U for the U.S. city average. The BLS page scheduled the September 2026 release for October 14, 2026, so the August report should not be described as the September reading.
Always write down the release month before interpreting a figure. A page may be updated after publication, and historical comparisons can use a later revised seasonal-adjustment vintage. The release date and the data month are not the same thing.

A five-step method for reading any CPI release
1. Confirm the index and reference period
Check that the table says CPI-U, All Urban Consumers, and identify whether it reports the U.S. city average or a specific geographic area. Confirm the month covered and whether the number is an index level, a monthly percentage change or a 12-month percentage change.
2. Read monthly and 12-month changes separately
A monthly change compares the index with the previous month. A 12-month change compares it with the same month one year earlier. They answer different questions and should never be treated as interchangeable.
For August 2026, the all-items CPI-U increased 0.4 percent on a seasonally adjusted monthly basis. Over the 12 months ending in August, the all-items index increased 3.4 percent before seasonal adjustment. The first figure describes the latest month after adjustment for recurring seasonal patterns; the second describes the year’s change using the release’s unadjusted year-over-year presentation.
3. Identify the adjustment basis
BLS tables normally show unadjusted index levels and changes alongside seasonally adjusted monthly changes. Seasonal adjustment removes recurring effects that occur at roughly the same time and magnitude each year, such as weather, production cycles, model changeovers, holidays and sales. BLS says seasonally adjusted changes are usually preferred for analyzing short-term price trends.
Unadjusted data still matter. They describe the prices actually recorded in the index and are relevant for contracts, escalators and other uses that specify an unadjusted measure. Before quoting a number, state both its horizon and adjustment basis.

4. Compare category movement with weight and contribution
A category’s percentage increase is not the same as its contribution to the all-items change. A small category can rise sharply yet add less to the headline than a large category that rises modestly. Read the relative-importance column and the release narrative together.
For example, gasoline rose 3.9 percent in August 2026 and accounted for more than one third of that month’s all-items increase. That contribution statement is not a claim that gasoline represented one third of the CPI basket; it describes gasoline’s share of the change during that month.
5. Check revisions and statistical uncertainty
CPI is calculated from sampled prices. BLS technical notes discuss sampling error and confidence intervals for monthly changes, so a difference of a few hundredths of a percentage point should not automatically be treated as evidence of a new trend.

BLS can revise the previous five years of seasonally adjusted indexes. Preserve the release vintage when comparing a historical chart with a number downloaded later; otherwise, you may be comparing revised data with an earlier published figure.
August 2026: a worked reading example
The following figures come from the August 2026 BLS release and its Table 1. The adjustment basis is included because the same index can have different monthly and 12-month presentations.

Do not infer the entire inflation story from the 0.4 percent headline. The table shows that energy, gasoline, shelter and food moved at different rates. The next question is whether the increase was concentrated in a few volatile categories or spread broadly across the basket.
How to use the BLS tables
Index level
An index level expresses prices relative to a reference period. It is not a dollar price and is not itself an inflation rate. To describe inflation, use the percentage change between two index levels over a stated interval.
Monthly percentage change
The monthly column reports movement over the interval shown. Use the seasonally adjusted monthly figure when evaluating a short-term trend, but label it clearly. A monthly rate can be annualized mathematically, yet that calculation assumes the same pace continues and is not a BLS forecast.

12-month percentage change
The 12-month figure compares the index with the same month a year earlier. In the release summary, the all-items year-over-year figure is presented before seasonal adjustment. It is useful for describing the price level’s change over a full year but can conceal turning points that appear in the monthly series.
Relative importance
Relative importance is the category’s weight in the CPI basket as of the table’s stated reference. It is not the category’s inflation rate. Use it to understand why contribution depends on both the weight and the price movement.
Contribution
Contribution explains how much a component helped raise or lower the all-items change during the period. It is a decomposition of the headline movement, not a second inflation rate. A category can have a high inflation rate and a modest contribution if its weight is small.

What “core CPI” means—and what it does not tell you
Readers often ask for core CPI when they want a view of underlying price pressure that is less affected by food and energy volatility. Core is a separate measure from the all-items CPI-U discussed above. Do not substitute a core figure for the headline, and do not infer a current core reading from the all-items numbers in this article. If you need core CPI, use the specific BLS release table and record its month, horizon and adjustment basis.
Even a core measure is not a complete measure of persistent inflation. Analysts should inspect individual categories, weights, breadth and the length of the period being studied rather than treating any one summary statistic as a definitive signal.
Why markets react to CPI
Expectations are the first comparison
Investors compare the released monthly and 12-month figures with the market expectation that existed immediately before publication. A number above expectations can prompt a different reaction from a number that is identical but widely anticipated. The relevant expectation may come from a survey, market pricing or an analyst estimate; these are not interchangeable.
The available material establishes the August release values and the importance of surprises but does not provide a current consensus forecast. Do not invent a consensus number when explaining a release.
Inflation and the Federal Reserve policy path
A CPI surprise can change views about how persistent inflation may be and how the Federal Reserve might set policy. If investors think inflation will remain elevated, they may revise the expected path of policy rates or the timing of future changes. That reassessment can affect yields and required returns across markets.

This is an information channel, not a mechanical rule. The market may already have priced the result, or other news may dominate the response.
Treasury yields and other interest rates
Bond prices and yields can adjust as investors revise expectations for short-term policy rates, inflation and compensation for holding longer maturities. A release that changes the expected path may move the front end of the Treasury curve, while longer yields also reflect real rates, term premiums, growth expectations and risk conditions.
Equities
Stocks can respond through several channels. Higher expected rates can reduce the present value assigned to future cash flows, while a change in inflation expectations can alter margins, demand assumptions and sector valuations. The same CPI number can therefore affect companies differently, and equity moves can be offset by earnings news, geopolitical developments or changing risk appetite.

Exchange rates can react when a CPI surprise changes the expected relative path of U.S. interest rates or the perceived strength of the economy. Currency prices also respond to policy decisions abroad, global growth and safe-haven demand, so a post-release move cannot automatically be attributed to CPI alone.
Inflation-linked securities
Inflation-linked securities respond to both realized inflation information and market-implied expectations. A reader may encounter inflation compensation, often called breakeven inflation, calculated as the difference between comparable nominal Treasury and Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) yields.
The Federal Reserve describes inflation compensation as a gauge of investors’ inflation expectations but cautions that risk premiums can also move it. A breakeven is therefore not a pure forecast of future CPI. Nominal Treasury yields and TIPS breakevens measure different combinations of real rates, expected inflation and risk premiums.

T. Niklas Kroner’s Federal Reserve Finance and Economics Discussion Series paper, published in March 2025, used intraday data and reported a sharp increase in market reactions to CPI releases during the 2021–2023 inflation surge. The analysis found stronger responses in bond yields, market-implied inflation expectations and other asset prices during that period than in the earlier comparison period. It also associated elevated investor attention around CPI announcements with stronger reactions.
Those are historical findings, not a promise about the next release. The July 10, 2026 Federal Reserve Monetary Policy Report illustrates why a single-cause explanation is risky: it discussed Treasury yields and market-implied policy expectations moving amid energy-price changes, geopolitical conflict and developments in labor-market confidence. Use such context to separate the CPI information channel from other forces moving markets at the same time.

A practical release-day workflow
- Record the timestamp and vintage. Note the release date, the data month and whether you are reading the initial release or a later revised seasonal-adjustment series.
- Copy the headline figures with labels. Write the monthly percentage, its adjustment basis, the 12-month percentage and its adjustment basis. Never write “CPI was 3.4%” without saying that it was the 12-month all-items change for August 2026 before seasonal adjustment.
- Open Table 1. Inspect index levels, monthly changes, 12-month changes and relative importance for the categories that moved the headline.
- Read the narrative contribution discussion. Identify which categories actually drove the all-items change. Separate a category’s inflation rate from its contribution.
- Assess breadth and volatility. Ask whether movement was concentrated in gasoline or other volatile components, or spread across several large categories.
- Compare with the appropriate expectation. State whether the result was above, below or close to the relevant pre-release expectation only when that expectation is documented.
- Check the policy interpretation. Consider whether the data alter assumptions about inflation persistence or the expected Federal Reserve path, while noting other contemporaneous events.
- Label the evidence. Distinguish observed CPI, survey expectations, market-implied compensation and your interpretation in both notes and published commentary.
Common reading errors
Mixing horizons
Comparing a 0.4 percent monthly increase directly with a 3.4 percent 12-month increase answers no coherent question. State the interval before comparing figures.
Ignoring seasonal adjustment
Using an unadjusted monthly number to infer a short-term trend can mistake a recurring seasonal pattern for a new development. Conversely, using a seasonally adjusted number for a contract that specifies unadjusted CPI can produce the wrong result.
Calling the index a price
An index level is relative to a reference period. It is not the amount a consumer pays at a store and cannot be interpreted as a dollar price without additional information.

Equating the largest percentage increase with the largest driver
Contribution depends on weight as well as movement. Always check the relative-importance column and the release’s contribution explanation.
Overreading tiny differences
Because CPI uses sampled prices and has sampling uncertainty, a small change may not establish a durable trend. Look across several releases and preserve the relevant vintage when making historical comparisons.
Treating breakevens as a guaranteed forecast
Breakeven inflation includes risk-premium effects and other market conditions. It is market inflation compensation, not a pure prediction of the next CPI print.
Assigning every market move to CPI
Rates, equities and currencies can move because of energy prices, geopolitical events, labor-market information, earnings, policy communication or changes in risk appetite. A before-and-after chart shows timing, not proof of sole causation.

- State the exact CPI measure, month, horizon and adjustment basis.
- Identify the categories and contributions behind the headline.
- Compare the release with a documented expectation, if one is available.
- Explain the possible implication for inflation persistence and the Federal Reserve policy path.
- Describe observed market moves separately from interpretation.
- List other news that could have affected yields, equities, currencies or inflation compensation.
- Avoid turning the analysis into a trading signal or a promise about future prices.
Using this structure keeps a factual BLS observation separate from an inference about policy and from a market outcome that may have several causes.
