SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) can show whether a hard drive is developing warning signs, but it cannot give a dependable countdown to failure for one consumer drive. A reported FAIL, a manufacturer diagnostic failure, or worsening sector errors should be treated as a reason to protect your data immediately—not as a date on which the drive will stop working.

The safe sequence is: make an independent backup, save the drive’s SMART report, run the manufacturer’s diagnostic for the exact model and interface, then check replacement or warranty options. A PASS only means the drive has not crossed its reported thresholds; it is not a guarantee that the disk will continue working.

What SMART data actually tells you

SMART is firmware-level monitoring. A drive records measurements such as sector handling, operating hours, temperature and read behavior, then compares selected attributes with thresholds defined for that model. The drive or operating system may summarize the result as Pass or Fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those measurements are useful for identifying risk, but they are not a standardized health meter. Attribute names, raw-value encoding, normalized scores and threshold rules differ among manufacturers and even among models from the same manufacturer. Seagate describes its thresholds as proprietary and warns that third-party displays can be inconsistent or inaccurate. Western Digital publishes a supported-attribute list specifically for its SATA hard drives rather than claiming that the same interpretation applies to every disk.

Consequently, a raw value such as “100,” “10” or “0” has no universal meaning. Read the field in the context of the drive model, the software that decoded it and the manufacturer’s documentation.

How to read the overall SMART status

SMART PASS

A PASS means the drive has not reported a threshold failure in the attributes used for its overall status. It does not prove that every sector is readable, that no intermittent errors exist, or that the disk has a predictable amount of life left. Continue normal backups and monitor for operating-system errors, unusual noises and changes in the report.

SMART FAIL or a system SMART alert

FAIL is a serious warning. The disk may still boot and open files because a threshold failure does not always cause immediate total loss. Copy important data before running a long surface scan or other stressful test. Seagate’s support guidance says a SMART error means you should back up as soon as possible and maintain consistent backups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not postpone the backup while trying to obtain a more precise prediction. Seagate states: “Unfortunately, there is no way to specifically predict when the failure will occur, so your best response is to back up your data as soon as possible.”

Key attributes and their limitations

The names below are common, but the exact encoding and threshold remain model-specific. Western Digital’s supported list identifies the relevant fields by ID for its SATA HDDs; those IDs should not be assumed to have identical behavior on another brand or model.

SMART field What it records How to use it What it cannot tell you
Overall status Whether one or more monitored thresholds has been crossed. Treat FAIL as an urgent data-protection event; treat PASS as “no threshold failure reported.” It does not provide a failure date or guarantee continued operation.
Re-allocated Sector Count (ID 5 on WD’s list) Sectors the drive has removed from service and replaced with spare sectors. Look for a model-specific interpretation and whether the count is increasing between readings. WD labels this attribute “Pre-Failure.” A single raw number is not a universal replacement cutoff or remaining-life percentage.
Current Pending Sector Count (ID 197 on WD’s list) Sectors that could not be read reliably and are waiting for a later write or reallocation decision. Backblaze describes an uncorrectable medium read error being marked pending in its fleet. Rising or persistent values deserve prompt attention. It does not establish how many days or hours the drive will continue working.
Offline Uncorrectable (ID 198 on WD’s list) Errors found during an offline scan that could not be corrected. Use the manufacturer’s definitions and diagnostic result; WD labels this field “Advisory.” The count cannot be converted into a lifespan estimate.
Power-on Hours (ID 9 on WD’s list) Accumulated time the drive has been powered. Use it as historical context when comparing drives of the same model and workload. Age in hours is not a direct measurement of remaining life. WD classifies this field as “Advisory.”
Temperature and related operating attributes Environmental or mechanical conditions monitored by the firmware, which can include temperature, read retries, slow spin-up and bad-sector behavior. Investigate ventilation and fans if temperature is high, then continue checking for underlying errors. Improved cooling does not prove that an existing mechanical or media fault has disappeared.

“Pre-Failure” and “Advisory” are attribute classifications in WD’s documentation. They are not percentages of life remaining and do not mean that failure will occur on a universal schedule.

Why the same SMART number can mean different things

Manufacturers may store a raw count, a scaled value, a vendor-specific code or a combination of fields. One program may show normalized “value,” “worst,” “threshold” and “raw” columns; another may decode the same bytes differently. A threshold is also selected for a particular firmware design, not for all hard drives.

Use the exact model number and firmware revision when consulting documentation. If a third-party utility presents a warning that conflicts with the drive maker’s utility, preserve both reports and give priority to the manufacturer’s diagnostic instructions. Do not reset, hide or rewrite SMART history merely to remove a warning; the history can help a support technician evaluate a warranty claim.

Can SMART calculate how much life is left?

Not reliably for an individual consumer HDD. Seagate says that a SMART FAIL is a near-term prediction but that there is no way to specify when the failure will occur. A disk can fail soon after a clean report, or continue operating for an uncertain period after a warning.

Research using large fleets can find correlations between attributes and failures for particular models, workloads and environments. Backblaze’s SMART statistics documentation, updated 10 May 2023, presents model-linked correlations rather than a universal formula. Its Q3 2025 drive-statistics explanation describes collection and failure handling in its own data-center fleet. Those results cannot be turned into a dependable countdown for a different drive in a home or office.

If a utility displays “90% life remaining,” “health 12%” or a similar figure, treat it as that utility’s interpretation of reported fields. The reviewed manufacturer and fleet sources do not establish a universal remaining-life percentage or a general accuracy figure for consumer predictions.

A practical process for reading a SMART report

1. Protect data before testing

Copy irreplaceable documents, photos, projects and other files to a separate device or an independent storage location. If the disk is still readable but slow or unstable, copy the most important material first. A backup is a second copy; moving files to another folder on the same physical disk does not protect them from that disk’s failure.

Prioritize files that cannot be recreated, and verify that the destination actually opens representative files. A backup that was never checked may be unusable when the source disk stops responding. Do not repeatedly reboot a deteriorating disk just to collect a prettier report; each start, scan or retry can impose additional work.

2. Record the drive identity

Write down the manufacturer, full model number, capacity, interface and firmware if the utility reports them. Save the complete SMART output with a date and time. These details are necessary because attribute definitions and thresholds vary by model.

3. Check the overall status and the trend

Note whether the report says PASS, FAIL or provides a system alert. Compare repeated readings from the same drive using the same utility. Pay particular attention to whether reallocated, pending or offline-uncorrectable fields are changing, rather than ranking the disk by one isolated raw value. Trend analysis is a cautious way to spot deterioration; it is not a failure-date calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A rising count is more informative than an isolated count, but a stable count is not a clean bill of health. Record the date, workload and temperature context for each reading. Compare only equivalent fields: switching utilities or comparing a normalized value on one model with a raw count on another can create a false trend.

4. Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic

Run the diagnostic recommended for the exact drive and connection. Seagate identifies SeaTools for checking SMART parameters and performing other drive tests. Follow the utility’s instructions about short and extended tests, power requirements and whether the drive may be taken offline. Do not begin a lengthy test until important data is safe.

A diagnostic is an assessment, not a repair or a promise of future reliability. A short test may not exercise every surface area, while an extended test can be stressful and time-consuming. Use the manufacturer’s documented result and error code rather than substituting a third-party “health” score.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

5. Interpret the diagnostic result

A failed manufacturer test is a replacement event in Seagate’s guidance. A SMART FAIL may also qualify the drive for warranty replacement, depending on the product’s terms. Save the test result or error code, because support may request it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not erase the disk before securing files and recording the evidence needed for support. Warranty procedures vary, and a replacement process may not recover your data. Data protection remains your responsibility even when the drive is still covered.

6. Address environmental warnings

If temperature is high, inspect airflow, fans, dust buildup and the drive’s mounting location. Correcting a cooling problem can reduce thermal stress, but it does not erase existing sector errors or establish that the disk is healthy. Continue monitoring after temperatures return to normal.

Also check practical causes of intermittent symptoms, such as a loose data or power connection, without assuming that a cable change has cured a media problem. If the drive has unusual noises, repeated resets or operating-system I/O errors, make data protection the priority and avoid unnecessary experiments.

7. Replace and restore from a known-good copy

When diagnostics fail, SMART remains in FAIL, or sector errors continue to rise, install replacement storage and restore files from the independent backup. Keep the original disk untouched if you may need professional recovery or a warranty return. Buying a replacement protects future work; it does not reveal how much life the old disk had left.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backup and replacement costs in the decision

SMART cannot tell you whether a replacement is financially worthwhile, so compare the practical cost of losing access to the data with the cost of making another copy or replacing the disk. A separate external hard drive is a straightforward physical backup destination; it should be independent of the suspect disk, not another partition on it. If the files are business-critical, consider maintaining more than one independent copy and confirming that each copy can be read.

Replacement is especially sensible after a failed manufacturer diagnostic, a confirmed SMART FAIL or a worsening sector trend. A drive that still works may be useful for noncritical temporary tasks only if you accept that it can stop without warning; never make it the sole location for important data. The cost of a new disk is predictable, while professional recovery, lost work and downtime can be far greater and are not guaranteed to succeed.

How to compare two drives without inventing a score

When assessing multiple disks, compare like with like: the same model-specific attributes, collected with the same interpretation, over time. A useful comparison includes:

  • Overall threshold status for each drive.
  • Manufacturer diagnostic result and any recorded error code.
  • Whether reallocated, pending or offline-uncorrectable counts are stable or increasing.
  • Power-on hours and workload context, treated as background information rather than a lifespan metric.
  • Temperature history and evidence of ventilation problems.
  • The practical cost and feasibility of making and verifying a backup or replacing the disk.

Do not rank drives solely by age or by one raw SMART value. The available evidence does not provide a universal scoring formula that converts these fields into a trustworthy percentage. A newer drive with a failed diagnostic is not a safer choice than an older drive with a clean, model-appropriate report and a verified backup.

Common situations and the safest response

Situation Recommended response
PASS, stable attributes, no symptoms Keep routine, independent backups and retain the dated report for comparison.
PASS but a new pending or uncorrectable count appears Back up important files, capture another report, and run the maker’s diagnostic. A PASS does not cancel a developing symptom.
FAIL or operating-system SMART alert Back up immediately, avoid unnecessary stress, then run the manufacturer diagnostic and check replacement or warranty options.
High temperature with otherwise unclear status Check fans and airflow, reduce heat, and continue investigating. Cooling alone does not clear other faults.
Diagnostic failure after backup Replace the drive or use the applicable warranty process; do not treat continued short-term operation as evidence of safety.
Third-party utility disagrees with the maker’s tool Save both reports, confirm the exact model and firmware, and follow the manufacturer’s diagnostic and support guidance.
Drive is slow, noisy or repeatedly disconnecting despite PASS Copy essential data first and investigate cables, power, enclosure and the drive itself; PASS does not override real symptoms.

What SMART cannot detect reliably

SMART observes the conditions and failure modes implemented by a drive’s firmware. It cannot foresee every electronic, mechanical, power, cable, controller or environmental event. A clean report therefore cannot substitute for backups, and a warning does not supply a guaranteed deadline. Sudden failure can occur before a threshold is crossed, while a disk with a warning may remain readable for an unknown period.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep using a drive after SMART says FAIL?

Use it only long enough to copy important data or complete a documented replacement process, and understand that it can stop at any time. A FAIL is not a timetable. After the backup, run the manufacturer diagnostic and plan replacement or warranty service.

Does one reallocated sector mean the drive is doomed?

No universal rule makes one raw value a death sentence. The meaning depends on the model’s encoding and threshold. The important questions are whether the manufacturer considers the attribute failed, whether the count is increasing, and what the diagnostic reports. Any sector warning should still prompt a current backup.

Are pending sectors worse than reallocated sectors?

They describe different stages of handling read trouble. A pending sector is awaiting a later write or reallocation decision; a reallocated sector has already been replaced with a spare location. Neither number supplies a remaining-life estimate. Rising or persistent values deserve prompt backup and a maker diagnostic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does “Pre-Failure” mean in a WD report?

It is WD’s classification for an attribute, such as its listed ID 5 field. It does not mean the drive has a fixed number of days left, nor does it represent a life percentage. Use the drive’s threshold status and diagnostic result.

Is power-on-hours a reliable age limit?

No. Power-on hours record elapsed powered time and are advisory in WD’s list. Drives with similar hours can have different workloads, temperatures and error histories, while a drive with fewer hours can still fail unexpectedly.

Can Backblaze statistics predict my home drive?

Backblaze can show correlations for particular models and its own data-center fleet, including the methodology described in its Q3 2025 statistics. Those population patterns do not provide a countdown for an individual home or office disk operating under different conditions.

Should I run a long scan before backing up?

No. Protect irreplaceable files first. A long or extended test can add read activity to a disk that is already unstable. Once data is safe, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the appropriate diagnostic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do with the old drive after replacement?

Keep it untouched if support, warranty service or professional recovery may be needed. Do not rely on it for important storage. Dispose of or sanitize it according to your organization’s data-handling requirements only after you no longer need the data or evidence.

Source context and dates

Seagate’s support article “How do I interpret SMART diagnostic utilities results?” and “My system reported a S.M.A.R.T. error on the drive,” both accessed 11 October 2026, provide the guidance on thresholds, backup urgency, SeaTools and replacement after a failed test. Western Digital’s “S.M.A.R.T. Attributes Supported by WD SATA Hard Drives,” published 20 August 2018 and updated 22 July 2026, provides the attribute IDs and Pre-Failure or Advisory classifications cited here. Backblaze’s “Hard Drive SMART Stats and Failure Rates,” updated 10 May 2023, and “Backblaze Drive Stats for Q3 2025,” accessed 11 October 2026, describe model- and fleet-specific correlations rather than an individual-drive lifespan equation.

The decision that matters

Use SMART to decide how urgently to protect data and investigate a drive—not to decide how many months remain. A FAIL, a failed manufacturer test, or worsening sector-related fields justifies replacement planning even when the disk still appears normal. A PASS supports continued use only alongside current, independently verified backups.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I read SMART data on a hard drive?

Start with the overall PASS or FAIL status, then identify the exact model and firmware. Review model-specific definitions for reallocated sectors, pending sectors, offline uncorrectable sectors, power-on hours and temperature. Compare repeated reports from the same utility and use the manufacturer’s diagnostic rather than treating a third-party score as authoritative.

Can SMART tell me how long my hard drive has left?

No. SMART can flag near-term risk, but Seagate says it cannot specify when failure will occur. Fleet statistics can show model-specific correlations, not a dependable countdown for an individual consumer drive.

Should I replace a drive that reports a SMART error?

Back up important data immediately, save the report, run the manufacturer’s diagnostic and check warranty terms. A failed diagnostic or persistent SMART FAIL is a replacement event in Seagate’s guidance, even if the drive still appears to work.

What do reallocated or pending sectors mean?

Reallocated sectors have been removed from service and replaced with spares. Pending sectors had read trouble and await a later write or reallocation decision. Their IDs, encoding and thresholds are model-specific, so watch for change and follow the maker’s interpretation rather than applying a universal cutoff.

Is a SMART PASS drive safe?

PASS only means the reported threshold conditions have not failed. It does not guarantee that every sector, cable, controller or mechanical component will continue working. Keep independent backups and respond to symptoms such as slow reads, unusual noise or operating-system errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can cooling fix a SMART warning?

Improving airflow and fans can address a high-temperature condition, but it does not erase existing sector errors or prove that the drive is healthy. Continue checking the report and run the manufacturer’s diagnostic after data is safe.

Are hard-drive health percentages accurate?

A percentage shown by a utility is that program’s interpretation of reported fields. The manufacturer and fleet sources do not establish a universal remaining-life percentage or general accuracy figure for consumer HDDs.

The Bottom Line

SMART is an early-warning and troubleshooting aid, not a countdown clock. Back up first, interpret attributes using the exact drive model’s documentation, run the manufacturer’s diagnostic, and replace or pursue warranty service after a confirmed failure. A PASS is useful reassurance only when paired with independent, verified backups.
