Crosscoder model diffing compares two language models by learning a shared sparse feature dictionary from their internal activations. It can help researchers examine which learned features appear shared across the models and which appear more strongly associated with one—but an apparently model-exclusive feature is not, by itself, proof that fine-tuning created a new concept.
What crosscoder model diffing measures
Model diffing is the broader practice of comparing language models through their internal representations. A crosscoder is one way to do this: it jointly learns a sparse feature dictionary over activations from two models, giving researchers a common reference for investigating their representations. Anthropic introduced this approach as a method for studying how models differ internally, while noting limitations in interpreting the resulting features. Anthropic’s crosscoder overview
The “diff” is a useful metaphor, but the result is not a literal code comparison or a direct inventory of behavioral changes. It is a set of learned features that researchers must interpret. A feature’s apparent association with one model does not reveal the model’s intent, and interpretation calls for evidence beyond the label “shared” or “exclusive.” Anthropic’s 2024 explanation of crosscoders
How shared and model-associated features emerge
Because both models contribute activations to the same dictionary, a learned feature can help describe patterns in both, or it can appear more strongly associated with one. These categories are outcomes of the method’s learned representation, not guaranteed ground-truth classes. The feature dictionary has limited capacity, and the training objective influences which patterns receive their own features.

Why exclusive features can be difficult to interpret
In a 2025 research update, Anthropic explains that shared and exclusive features compete for limited representational capacity. It reports that exclusive features can become more polysemantic—representing several concepts—and have denser activations. The update proposes designating some features as shared and applying a reduced sparsity penalty to them; Anthropic reports that this helps isolate more interpretable exclusive features in its experiments. The update describes the work as preliminary, rather than a mature, comprehensive result. Anthropic’s 2025 research update
Why an exclusive-looking feature may not be new
A separate problem is attribution: sparsity-related artifacts can make a concept present in both models look unique to the fine-tuned model. The NeurIPS 2025 paper describes two problems arising from the crosscoder L1 loss that can lead to this misattribution. Researchers should therefore distinguish “the learned representation appears exclusive under this method” from “fine-tuning introduced this concept.” NeurIPS 2025 paper record

What crosscoder studies can and cannot establish
A crosscoder can give researchers a structured way to ask how two models’ internal representations relate. It does not, on its own, establish that a feature is genuinely absent from one model, that training caused it to appear, or that a feature explains a behavior. Those conclusions require careful interpretation and additional evidence; claims should stay at the level supported by the particular study.

How the approach is being extended
The basic approach has been extended beyond comparisons between models with the same architecture. A 2026 arXiv paper introduces Dedicated Feature Crosscoders, which partition features into shared and model-specific groups, and reports cross-architecture examples involving alignment-related features, national framing, and a refusal mechanism. These are findings reported in that paper; they should not be treated as proof that the method generalizes broadly across architectures, models, or tasks. 2026 arXiv paper on Dedicated Feature Crosscoders

A careful way to read a model-diff result
- Identify the comparison: check whether the study compares a base model with a fine-tune of the same architecture or models with different architectures.
- Check how features are allocated: determine whether shared and model-specific features emerge implicitly or whether the method explicitly assigns them to groups.
- Separate appearance from cause: describe a feature as apparently exclusive under the method unless the evidence supports the stronger claim that training introduced it.
- Consider the objective’s artifacts: sparsity and limited feature capacity can affect which concepts appear shared, exclusive, or interpretable.
- Match confidence to evidence: distinguish a preliminary research update, a conference paper, and a preprint, and avoid claiming behavioral or causal conclusions from feature inspection alone.
