Read Nifty 50 spot and futures as two related but different prices: spot is the index level, while futures is the traded price of a contract that expires on a specified date. Match the same timestamp, identify the exact expiry, calculate basis = futures price − spot price, and then interpret that difference using financing, expected dividends and time remaining. A futures price above or below spot is informative, but the gap alone does not prove an arbitrage opportunity or provide a trading signal.
The practical method is simple: verify the contract and quote type, align the observations, compute the basis, compare it with the remaining time and carry, and distinguish live, closing and official settlement values. The sections below show how to do that without treating unlike numbers as a meaningful spread.
What Nifty spot and Nifty futures each represent
The Nifty 50 spot price is the current level of the Nifty 50 index. It is an index calculation, not a share that can be bought directly. Nifty 50 futures are exchange-traded contracts whose underlying is that index. Each contract has an expiry month, and its quoted price reflects what buyers and sellers are willing to pay for settlement at that future date.

They are not required to be identical during the life of a contract. The futures quote incorporates the economic cost of holding exposure until expiry, including financing, expected dividends and the amount of time left. Market supply and demand can also move the traded price away from a simplified theoretical value.

NSE describes a three-month cycle of consecutive near-, mid- and far-month Nifty 50 index-futures contracts. “Near” means the contract that expires first, “mid” the next one and “far” the third. Always write down the expiry month before interpreting a quote; “Nifty futures” without an expiry is incomplete information.
The three checks to make before calculating anything
- Identify the exact contract. Record the expiry month and confirm that it is a Nifty 50 index-futures contract, not an option or a futures contract on another index.
- Align the timestamp. Use spot and futures observations from the same moment, or clearly label one as a close or settlement value. A live futures quote compared with yesterday’s spot close can create a gap that is mostly a timing difference.
- Identify the observation type. Note whether each number is live, last traded, official close or exchange settlement. These labels are not interchangeable.
For a reproducible worksheet, record the date, clock time and data source beside every number. If a data screen updates one instrument less frequently than the other, wait for both to refresh or use a common official closing or settlement dataset.
Basis: the first calculation
Use one sign convention consistently:
Basis = futures price − spot index level
A positive basis means the futures quote is above spot. A negative basis means it is below spot. You can also express the gap as a percentage of spot:
Basis percentage = (futures − spot) ÷ spot × 100
The percentage makes gaps at different index levels easier to compare, but it does not remove the need to account for expiry, financing, dividends or quote timing.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose the same-time Nifty 50 spot level is 24,000 and the September contract is quoted at 24,080. The basis is 80 points, or 0.333% of spot (80 ÷ 24,000 × 100). This is only a description of the relationship. It does not establish that 80 points is too high, too low or tradable.
If the futures quote were 23,940 instead, the basis would be −60 points, or −0.25%. The negative sign tells you the futures price is below spot; it does not, by itself, identify the cause or predict what happens next.

Fair futures value ≈ spot × e(r − q)T
- r is the annualized financing rate used in the model.
- q is the expected annualized dividend yield on the index over the holding period.
- T is the fraction of a year remaining until expiry.
Financing tends to push futures above spot because paying for exposure has a cost. Expected dividends push the other way because an owner of the underlying exposure receives those distributions while a futures holder does not receive them directly. The net effect can be positive or negative, and the amount generally shrinks as T approaches zero.
Actual traded prices are not guaranteed to equal this simplified value. The model requires assumptions about rates and dividends, while the market price also reflects liquidity, order flow and the particular contract’s supply and demand. Treat the formula as a framework for asking whether a basis is broadly understandable, not as an exact guaranteed quote.
NSE Academy’s worked fair-value example
NSE Academy’s derivatives material gives an educational example using a spot level of 6,000, financing of 10% a year, an annualized Nifty dividend yield of 2% and 60 days to expiry:
Fair value = 6,000 × e(0.10 − 0.02) × (60/365) = ₹6,079.43
The ₹6,079.43 result is a hypothetical illustration published in approximately 2017, not a current Nifty market value or a forecast. Its purpose is to show how financing, dividends and days to expiry enter the calculation. If any assumption changes, the illustrative fair value changes too.
Comparing near-, mid- and far-month contracts
NSE’s Nifty 50 futures page describes three consecutive monthly maturities. Compare contracts only after separating the maturity effect:
| Contract | What it means | How carry usually affects the basis | What to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Near month | First expiry in the listed cycle | Less time for financing and dividends to accumulate; the basis is generally closer to zero than a comparable longer-dated contract, all else equal | Exact expiry date and time remaining |
| Mid month | Second consecutive expiry | More time for net carry to build than the near month | Exact expiry date and time remaining |
| Far month | Third consecutive expiry | Most time for financing and expected dividends to affect the theoretical relationship | Exact expiry date and time remaining |
“All else equal” matters. A mid-month contract can trade below a near-month contract if expectations, liquidity or market conditions differ. Never compare the basis of two maturities as though they were one contract, and never call the far-month premium an anomaly without accounting for its longer holding period.
Live quote, last trade, close and settlement are different numbers
A quote screen may show several prices for the same contract. Their definitions matter when you compare them with spot:

- Live or current quote: the price available or recently updated during the trading session.
- Last traded price: the price of the most recent completed trade. It can be stale when trading is thin.
- Closing price: the exchange-defined end-of-session value.
- Daily settlement price: the value used for daily mark-to-market settlement under the exchange’s method.
NSE states that index-futures daily settlement uses the contract closing price, calculated from a weighted average during the last half-hour of trading. A last trade just before that window is therefore not automatically the official settlement value.
NSE Clearing also describes a theoretical daily settlement price for an unexpired contract that did not trade in the last half-hour. Its stated approach uses F = S × e(rt) for that circumstance. This theoretical value is a settlement rule, not evidence that the market traded there.
For final settlement, NSE uses the relevant underlying index’s closing price on the contract’s last trading day. Consequently, a live futures quote, the last trade, the daily settlement and the final settlement can all differ legitimately. Label the value you use instead of collapsing them into one generic “price.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA repeatable step-by-step reading process
Step 1: Write the contract identity
Record “Nifty 50 futures,” the expiry month and the date you are observing. NSE’s contract specification, displayed as updated 11 August 2026, lists three consecutive monthly contracts. The contract page says expiry is Tuesday of the expiry period, moved to the previous trading day if Tuesday is a trading holiday. Verify the currently listed expiry and any rule changes on NSE before relying on a date.
Step 2: Capture matched observations
At one timestamp, write down the Nifty 50 spot level and the selected futures price. Mark both as live, last traded, close or settlement. If you use official end-of-day data, use the same session date for both instruments.
Step 3: Calculate the signed basis
Subtract spot from futures and keep the sign: F − S. Then calculate the percentage if you need to compare observations made at different index levels.
Step 4: Check time to expiry
Count calendar or trading days consistently and convert the result to a fraction of a year for a carry model. The farther the expiry, the more opportunity financing and expected dividends have to affect the relationship.

Step 5: Test the carry explanation
Ask whether the sign and approximate size are plausible given financing and expected dividends. A positive net financing cost can explain a futures premium; a dividend yield that exceeds financing can contribute to a discount. Use assumptions that match the period and avoid presenting a rough model as an exact fair value.

Step 6: Check for data mismatches
If the basis looks unusually large, first verify timestamps, contract month, quote type, corporate or index-data interruptions and whether one screen is showing a stale last trade. A data mismatch is a more immediate explanation than an arbitrage opportunity.
Step 7: Record the conclusion narrowly
Describe what the observation supports: for example, “The September contract traded 80 points above the spot index at 10:30 UTC, consistent with a positive basis.” Do not turn that sentence into a prediction or a risk-free trade claim.
How to interpret common basis patterns
| Observed relationship | What it can indicate | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Futures above spot | Positive net carry, including financing exceeding expected dividends, or strong demand for that contract | That futures must fall, spot must rise, or a risk-free arbitrage exists |
| Futures below spot | Expected dividends may outweigh financing, or contract-specific supply and demand may be applying a discount | That futures must rise to spot immediately |
| Basis shrinking as expiry approaches | Normal convergence of the futures price toward the underlying index | That every intraday move will be smooth or monotonic |
| Far-month basis larger than near-month basis | More time for net carry to accumulate | That the far-month contract is mispriced without checking assumptions and liquidity |
| Sudden large basis change | A move in spot or futures, a change in expectations, a stale quote, or a different observation type | That the displayed gap is executable at both prices |
Convergence toward expiry
NSE Academy summarizes the relationship this way: “As the date of expiration comes near, the basis reduces – there is a convergence of the futures price towards the spot price.” In practical terms, the remaining financing and dividend period gets shorter, so the carry component tends to diminish.

Futures and spot can diverge temporarily during the contract’s life. On the last trading day, final index-futures settlement uses the underlying index’s closing price under NSE’s stated mechanism, so the final settlement reference is not simply whichever futures trade happened to print last.
Why a futures–spot gap is not automatically arbitrage
A textbook cash-and-carry or reverse-cash-and-carry comparison requires more than subtracting two displayed prices. A practical assessment must account for:
- Whether both prices can actually be executed at the displayed size.
- Bid–ask spreads, brokerage and exchange charges.
- Financing availability and the rate you can obtain.
- Margin requirements and the possibility of additional variation-margin payments.
- The dividend assumptions used in the fair-value estimate.
- Taxes, funding timing and the cost of maintaining positions until expiry.
- Liquidity differences between the chosen expiry and the spot-related hedge.
- Settlement conventions and any basis risk between the hedge and the exact index exposure.
These costs and operational conditions can consume a theoretical difference. A positive or negative basis is therefore a market observation, not a standalone instruction to buy one instrument and sell the other.

Comparing different expiries
Mistake: comparing the near-month futures quote with the far-month quote or with an option price and calling the difference “the basis.”
Correction: calculate F − S separately for each named futures expiry.
Mixing timestamps
Mistake: using a live futures quote against a prior-day spot close.
Correction: use same-time observations or explicitly compare official closing values from the same session.

Treating last traded price as settlement
Mistake: assuming the last transaction is the exchange’s daily settlement.
Correction: check whether the exchange’s last-half-hour weighted-average method or its theoretical untraded-contract method applies.
Ignoring dividends
Mistake: explaining every futures premium as financing alone.
Correction: include expected index dividends; they reduce the fair futures value relative to a financing-only calculation.
Using a stale or illiquid quote
Mistake: interpreting an old last trade as a current market price.
Correction: check the quote time, recent trading activity and bid–ask market before drawing a conclusion.

A compact worksheet for daily analysis
Use one row per observation so that every basis number retains its context:
| Field | Entry |
|---|---|
| Observation date | Session date and time zone |
| Spot observation | Nifty 50 level and whether live, last, close or settlement |
| Futures contract | Near, mid or far month; exact expiry date |
| Futures observation | Price and whether live, last, close or settlement |
| Basis | F − S, in index points |
| Basis percentage | (F − S) ÷ S × 100 |
| Time remaining | Days or year fraction to expiry |
| Carry assumptions | Financing rate, expected dividend yield and their source date |
| Interpretation | Carry-consistent, data mismatch suspected, or requires further investigation |
This format prevents a common analytical failure: keeping the numerical spread while losing the expiry, timestamp and quote definition that make the spread interpretable.
Which NSE references define the mechanics
NSE’s “NIFTY 50 F&O” page, displayed as updated 23 September 2025, identifies Nifty 50 as the underlying and describes the three-month contract cycle. NSE’s contract specifications, displayed as updated 11 August 2026, provide the listed monthly structure and Tuesday-expiry rule described above. NSE’s “Settlement Price” information explains the closing-price basis for daily settlement, while NSE and NSE Clearing’s “Settlement Mechanism” describes daily and final settlement treatment. NSE Academy’s derivatives-market material supplies the cost-of-carry explanation and the ₹6,079.43 educational example.
Contract listings, expiry dates and settlement rules can change. Check the current NSE contract and settlement pages when you perform an analysis, and preserve the page date or timestamp in your records.
Bottom line
To read Nifty futures and spot together, first match the exact expiry and timestamp, then distinguish live, last, close and settlement values. Compute the signed basis as futures minus spot, and explain its direction with financing, expected dividends and time to expiry. A basis that narrows toward expiry is consistent with convergence, but the gap alone is not a guaranteed signal or arbitrage trade. The quality of your conclusion depends as much on clean, matched data and correct settlement definitions as on the subtraction itself.
