Read the core manga in this order: Naruto Volumes 1–72, then Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapters 1–80 (Volumes 1–20), then Boruto: Two Blue Vortex from Chapter 1 or Volume 1 onward. The two Boruto series are separate cataloged manga lines, so Two Blue Vortex is not a volume-number continuation of the earlier Boruto set.

- Naruto — Volumes 1–72
- Boruto: Naruto Next Generations — Chapters 1–80, collected in Volumes 1–20
- Boruto: Two Blue Vortex — Chapter 1 onward, or Volume 1 onward
This order follows the three separately identified core comic series in the franchise. Finish Naruto before starting either Boruto title, complete Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, and then move to Two Blue Vortex.

1. Read Naruto first
Start with Volume 1
Begin with Naruto Volume 1 and continue through Volume 72. The original manga is the first line in the core reading path and establishes the characters, setting, conflicts and history that the next-generation stories build on.
#1 Best Overall
Use the numbered volumes in sequence rather than jumping between story arcs. If you read digitally, select the complete Naruto series and open Chapter 1; if you read in print, simply work from Volume 1 through Volume 72.
Why Naruto comes before both Boruto series
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is a next-generation story, not an alternative starting point for the franchise. Reading it first can reveal the status of characters and events introduced in Naruto. Completing the original series preserves the intended progression and gives later references their context.
2. Continue with Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
Read Chapters 1–80 or Volumes 1–20
After Volume 72 of Naruto, start Boruto: Naruto Next Generations at Chapter 1. The series runs through Chapter 80 and is collected in Volumes 1–20. You can therefore choose either of these equivalent formats:

| Format | What to read | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| Collected print or digital volumes | Volumes 1–20 | Best if you prefer bound books, volume-level progress and a consistent shelf or library record. |
| Individual digital chapters | Chapter 1 through Chapter 80 | Useful when your official digital service presents chapters separately or when you want to follow the numbered chapters directly. |
Do not stop at an earlier Boruto volume simply because you have reached a familiar anime storyline or a major character appearance. For the manga reading order, complete the numbered series through Chapter 80 or Volume 20 before opening Two Blue Vortex.
What the series credits mean
VIZ identifies Boruto: Naruto Next Generations as its own series and credits Masashi Kishimoto with creation and supervision, Mikio Ikemoto with art, and Ukyo Kodachi with the script. Those credits help distinguish the series catalog from the later Two Blue Vortex catalog, but they do not change the reading sequence.
Rank #2
3. Start Boruto: Two Blue Vortex as a new series
Begin at Chapter 1 or Volume 1
Once you finish Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, begin Boruto: Two Blue Vortex at Chapter 1. If you buy collected editions, start with Volume 1. VIZ maintains a distinct product catalog for Two Blue Vortex and currently lists Volumes 1–6 on that series page.
The first collected volume is therefore labeled Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, Vol. 1, not Volume 21 of the previous Boruto set. Treating the title as a separate series prevents a common cataloging mistake: continuing the old volume numbers into a new product line.
What comes after the Boruto manga?
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is the next distinct manga segment after Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Its chapter numbering begins again at Chapter 1, and its collected editions begin again at Volume 1. Read the available chapters or volumes in their own numerical order from that point onward.
Quick order by format
| If you are reading… | Use this sequence |
|---|---|
| Print volumes | Naruto Vol. 1–72 → Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Vol. 1–20 → Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Vol. 1 onward |
| Digital chapters | Naruto Chapter 1 onward through its final volume → Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapter 1–80 → Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 1 onward |
| Mixed format | Finish the current series before switching formats, and verify that you are opening the correct Boruto title before continuing. |
The volume and chapter labels above describe the core sequence. Digital services can display products differently, so use the series name as well as the number when selecting a book or chapter.
Do you need to read the Naruto and Boruto novels?
Novels are optional supplements
No novel is required to understand the three-manga core path. The official Naruto related-publications catalog separates novels and side works from the core comics. It lists Boruto novels, Naruto novels, Konoha’s Story, the Shinden and Hiden series, Naruto: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring, and other related titles.
Rank #3
For a first reading, leave those books until after the core manga unless you have a specific interest in a supplementary character story. The catalog does not establish one universal chronological placement for every tie-in, so inserting them between manga volumes can create an inconsistent order and may expose you to information from later in the main story.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen an optional book makes sense
- You want the complete publishing universe: Finish the three manga lines first, then choose related novels and side stories by character or subtitle.
- You are following one character: A title such as a Shinden or Hiden story may be appealing after the core series, but its placement should be treated as supplemental rather than mandatory.
- You want maximum spoiler control: Delay every tie-in until after the manga sequence unless an official edition explicitly gives a placement that you intend to follow.
Core order versus an expanded reading path
| Reading path | What it includes | Core-story completeness | Spoiler risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core only | Naruto → Boruto: Naruto Next Generations → Boruto: Two Blue Vortex | Complete for the three identified manga lines | Lowest, because no side work is inserted into the sequence |
| Core first, supplements later | All three manga lines, followed by selected novels and side stories | Complete, with optional additional material | Low, provided the supplements are read after the core |
| Chronology experiment | Side stories inserted among manga volumes | Depends on the titles selected | Higher, because the official catalog does not prescribe one universal placement for every tie-in |
For most readers, “core first, supplements later” gives the best balance: it preserves the main progression while leaving room for additional stories once the principal manga sequence is complete.
How to avoid the most common ordering mistakes
Mistake: starting with a Boruto title
Fix: Go back to Naruto Volume 1 and read through Volume 72. The direct answer to “Do I read Naruto before Boruto?” is yes.
Mistake: treating the two Boruto titles as one numbered set
Fix: Complete Boruto: Naruto Next Generations through Volume 20 or Chapter 80, then select Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Volume 1 or Chapter 1. The reset numbering is intentional because the titles are cataloged as separate series.
Mistake: using a side novel as a required bridge
Fix: Continue directly from the end of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations into Two Blue Vortex. Novels and related publications are optional and can be read later.
Rank #4
Mistake: assuming every edition has the same display
Fix: Check both the full title and the volume or chapter number. A retailer, library or digital storefront may group products by franchise, while the official catalogs separate the two Boruto manga lines.
A practical step-by-step checklist
- Choose a format. Decide whether you will use print volumes, official digital chapters or a mixture of both.
- Open the original series. Select Naruto, Volume 1 or Chapter 1.
- Finish the original run. Continue through Volume 72 before moving to either Boruto title.
- Verify the next title. Select Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, not Two Blue Vortex.
- Complete the first Boruto series. Read Chapters 1–80 or Volumes 1–20.
- Switch to the distinct sequel line. Open Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 1 or Volume 1.
- Keep supplements separate. Add novels and side stories only after deciding whether their possible spoilers and non-standard placement suit your plan.
Answers to the questions readers usually ask
How do I read Naruto and Boruto in order?
Read Naruto Volumes 1–72, then Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapters 1–80 or Volumes 1–20, then Boruto: Two Blue Vortex from Chapter 1 or Volume 1 onward.
Do I read Naruto before Boruto?
Yes. Naruto is the first core manga line and should be completed before either Boruto series.
Should I read Boruto: Naruto Next Generations before Two Blue Vortex?
Yes. Two Blue Vortex is the distinct manga segment that follows Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, so read the earlier series through Chapter 80 or Volume 20 first.
What comes after the Boruto manga?
After Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, read Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, beginning with Chapter 1 or Volume 1.
Best Value
Is Two Blue Vortex Volume 1 the same as Boruto Volume 21?
No. Two Blue Vortex starts its own volume numbering. Its first collected edition is Volume 1, separate from the 20-volume Boruto: Naruto Next Generations set.
Can I read only the Boruto manga?
You can, but that skips the original manga that precedes the next-generation story. For the complete core path, read Naruto first.
Where should I place the novels?
There is no single catalog-prescribed placement for every related novel and side work. The least confusing option is to finish all three core manga lines first, then read supplements as optional additions.
Bottom line
The reliable order is Naruto → Boruto: Naruto Next Generations → Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Use Volumes 1–72, then Chapters 1–80 or Volumes 1–20, then start the separately cataloged Two Blue Vortex at Chapter 1 or Volume 1. Keep novels and other related publications outside the main sequence unless you deliberately want optional, potentially spoiler-sensitive material.
