Each revealed number tells you exactly how many mines touch that square—including diagonally. To prove a covered square safe, compare that count with the mines you have confirmed nearby; a square that merely looks likely is not guaranteed safe.
What do the numbers mean in Minesweeper?
A number counts mines in the squares immediately around it: above, below, left, right, and all four diagonals. An interior square can have eight neighbors. Edge and corner squares have fewer, so count only the cells that actually exist on the board.
A blank square has zero adjacent mines. Many versions automatically reveal neighboring safe squares when you uncover a blank, but that behavior—and other first-click rules—depends on the particular game.
How to read a clue against covered squares
For each revealed clue, count only its still-covered neighbors, then account for mines you have already established among them. The clue’s number is the total mine count, not the number of mines still unknown.

- One unknown neighbor, clue 1: If the other neighbors are known safe or outside the board, the lone covered square must be a mine.
- All mines accounted for: If a clue requires one mine and you have established that one adjacent square is a mine, every other covered neighbor of that clue is safe.
- Several unresolved neighbors: Keep the clue as a constraint. It tells you how many of that group contain mines, even if it does not identify which ones yet.
A flag records your belief; it does not prove the marked square is a mine. Base deductions on evidence from the clues. If a supposed mine is actually safe, any conclusion that relied on it may also be wrong.
How to compare overlapping clues
When no single clue settles a square, compare two nearby clues that share covered neighbors. If one clue’s unknown group is entirely contained in the other’s, subtract the smaller group’s required mine count from the larger group’s count. The difference applies to the cells in the larger group that are not in the smaller one.

A simple subtraction example
Suppose clue A has two covered neighbors, X and Y, and requires one mine. A neighboring clue B has those same two squares plus a third covered square, Z, and requires two mines among the three. Since X and Y account for one mine total, Z must contain the remaining mine. This deduction uses both clues; neither clue alone identifies Z.

This is the logic behind many familiar edge patterns; the pattern is useful only when its cells and mine requirements match the board.

When is a square guaranteed safe?
A square is guaranteed safe only when the visible clues and mines you have established leave no consistent possibility that it contains a mine. The clearest case is a clue whose required mine count has already been met by known adjacent mines: its other covered neighbors are safe. Overlapping-clue deductions can prove additional squares safe by constraining a group of cells.
By contrast, a square is not proven safe just because it is next to a low number, seems less likely to contain a mine, or is unflagged. If multiple mine arrangements still fit every visible clue and place a mine in different candidate squares, the clues have not proved any of those candidates safe.

Is Minesweeper a guessing game?
Some ordinary board positions cannot be resolved from the visible clues alone: several mine arrangements may satisfy all the information available. In that situation, a player may have to guess unless the game provides another way to reveal information. Some variants advertise no-guess board generation, but that guarantee does not apply to every Minesweeper game.
First-click safety, whether a first click clears a surrounding area, and no-guess generation are implementation-specific. Do not assume one version’s behavior applies to another.

What are flags and chording?
Flags are markers for squares you believe contain mines. They can help you track deductions, but placing one does not change the board or make the deduction true.
In many implementations, chording means clicking a revealed clue after flagging the expected number of adjacent mines; the game then opens the unflagged neighbors. It is a shortcut, not an independent safety rule. If even one flag is misplaced, chording can expose a mine. The gesture or input used for flagging and chording varies by game, so check that version’s controls before relying on it.

A practical move-by-move check
- Count the clue’s neighbors. Include diagonals and account for edges and corners.
- Separate known squares from covered ones. Use clues to establish mines; do not treat a flag alone as proof.
- Compare the remaining count. If the clue’s mine requirement is already met, its other covered neighbors are safe. If one covered square must satisfy the remaining count, it is a mine.
- Compare overlapping groups. When one unknown group is contained in another, subtract their required mine counts to constrain the cells outside the smaller group.
- Check whether the move is forced. If more than one arrangement still fits the clues and changes whether a candidate is a mine, that candidate is not logically guaranteed safe.
- Use chording only after checking every flag. A correct flag count is not enough if a flag is on the wrong square.
