To read a LiDAR map of an archaeological site, first identify the underlying data and processing, then compare several terrain visualizations, and finally test any apparent feature against historical, environmental and field evidence. A bright line, mound or rectangular depression is evidence of a surface shape—not proof of a human structure, its age or its purpose. LiDAR records terrain during a particular acquisition period, and both natural processes and data processing can create forms that resemble archaeology.
What a LiDAR map actually represents
LiDAR (light detection and ranging) instruments measure laser returns and produce a three-dimensional point cloud. Individual returns may come from bare ground, vegetation, buildings, walls and other objects. A map viewer usually does not display that raw cloud directly. It may render an elevation model derived from the points, or a visualization calculated from that model.
Point cloud
A point cloud is a collection of georeferenced points with elevation and, depending on the dataset, classification and intensity attributes. It preserves more of the original observations than a regular grid, but it is not automatically a picture of the ground. Returns from leaves, roofs or walls can be mixed with ground returns. Classification tells the software which points are considered ground, vegetation, buildings or other categories; classifications are useful, but not infallible.

A digital elevation model (DEM), often called a digital terrain model (DTM) when it specifically represents terrain, is an elevation surface arranged in regularly spaced cells. A bare-earth model attempts to retain ground elevations while excluding buildings and vegetation. It is usually the best starting layer for subtle banks, ditches, mounds and old roads beneath woodland, but it remains a processed product. Point classification, interpolation and the chosen cell size all affect the result.

Digital surface model (DSM)
A DSM represents the elevations of features on the surface. Trees, roofs, walls and other objects therefore contribute to the heights shown. A DSM is useful when the question concerns standing structures or canopy height, while a bare-earth model is more suitable for ground microrelief. If a supposed wall appears only in a DSM and disappears in a bare-earth model, it may be a standing object rather than an earthwork.
Other layers sometimes labelled “LiDAR”
Viewers may also offer intensity images, slope, aspect, contours or tinted relief derived from LiDAR data. These are different measurements or renderings. Before interpreting a mark, read the layer name and metadata rather than assuming every image labelled LiDAR shows the same thing.
Check the dataset before looking for ruins
Metadata determines what details a map can reasonably show. Record these items before drawing an interpretation:

| Item | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Product type | Point clouds, bare-earth DEMs and DSMs show different surfaces. | Am I viewing raw returns, a ground model, a surface model or a derivative image? |
| Acquisition date | The map captures one period in a landscape that may have changed before or after the survey. | When were the laser measurements collected? |
| Horizontal resolution | Cell size controls how much small relief is retained or smoothed. | What is the nominal grid spacing? |
| Point density | More observations can improve representation, but density alone does not guarantee that a feature is visible. | How many returns cover the area, and are they ground-classified? |
| Vertical datum and units | Elevation comparisons can be wrong if datasets use different vertical references or units. | Which datum and measurement units are specified? |
| Classification and processing | Filtering, interpolation and removal of objects can create or erase apparent relief. | How were ground points selected and the grid produced? |
| Coverage and gaps | A blank area may be missing data rather than flat terrain. | Are there voids, tile seams or edge effects? |
There is no universal resolution threshold that reveals every archaeological site. Feature size, vegetation, land use, relief and processing all influence visibility. Treat a nominal cell size as a property of the dataset, not a promise of detection.
How to read the main LiDAR visualizations
| Visualization | What it encodes | Useful questions | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hillshade | Shading calculated from a hypothetical light source to emphasize changes in slope. | Where are ridges, hollows, scarps, banks and ditches? | Contrast depends on the simulated light direction and altitude; one angle can hide a real feature. |
| Multidirectional hillshade | Relief shaded from several directions. | Does a line remain visible when illumination changes? | It reduces directional bias but is still a rendering, not a photograph. |
| Slope | The maximum rate of elevation change around each cell. | Is there a steep edge around a flatter interior? | It shows steepness, not the cause of the slope. |
| Aspect | The compass direction a slope faces. | How does a bank or landform align with drainage and surrounding terrain? | It is an orientation measurement, not a feature label. |
| Contours | Lines joining points of equal elevation. | What is the relative height, shape and continuity of a landform? | Contour interval and smoothing can make forms appear more or less angular. |
| Elevation-tinted hillshade | Color-coded elevation combined with shaded relief. | How do relative height and shape relate at the same time? | Color ramps can exaggerate or suppress perceived differences. |
| Intensity | The strength of returned laser energy, where available. | Do materials or surface conditions differ? | Intensity is not a direct archaeological map and is affected by sensor and surface conditions. |
USGS describes hillshade as an illuminated representation made with a hypothetical light source to enhance terrain visualization. A standard USGS hillshade uses an azimuth of 315 degrees and an altitude of 45 degrees; other directions can produce a very different appearance. Use that fact as a reminder to compare renderings, not as a setting that is always best.
A reliable workflow for interpreting a possible feature
1. Establish exactly what is on screen
Open the layer information or metadata panel. Confirm whether the image is a point cloud, bare-earth DEM, DSM, intensity layer or derivative. Note the acquisition date, resolution, point density, vertical datum and classification notes. Save a screenshot or record the tile name so another person can reproduce the view.

2. Start with the landscape, not the suspected site
Zoom out until you can see ridges, valleys, streams, terraces and modern roads. Use elevation and contours to understand the broad landform. Then inspect slope and aspect to see whether the mark follows a natural break, drainage line or known geological boundary. A pattern that makes sense as a landform should remain a natural explanation until other evidence supports a human one.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →3. Change the illumination
View the same area with hillshade from more than one direction and with a multidirectional hillshade if available. A linear bank that vanishes when the light comes from the opposite side may be a genuine low-relief form rendered poorly by one angle; a mark that appears only under one setting may be a shading artifact. Compare the result with slope and contours rather than choosing the most dramatic image.
4. Compare terrain products
Place the bare-earth model beside the DSM, where both exist. A feature present in the DSM but absent from the ground model may be a tree line, roof, modern fence or standing wall. A subtle depression that persists in the ground model and in contours deserves closer attention, although persistence still does not establish archaeology.
5. Describe before you interpret
Write a neutral description using location, dimensions, orientation, relief and relationships: for example, “a 120-metre linear bank running northeast along the edge of a terrace, with a shallow parallel hollow.” Avoid labels such as “Roman road” or “fort” at this stage. Neutral wording prevents an attractive theory from shaping what you see.
6. Build competing explanations
For every candidate, list at least one natural, recent and historical explanation. Consider geology, erosion, tree throws, drainage, forestry tracks, ploughing, pipeline work, property boundaries and quarrying alongside an archaeological possibility. Ask what observation would distinguish each explanation. A straight line may be a wall, but it may also be a modern access track or a boundary that follows a convenient contour.
7. Test the hypothesis with independent context
Compare the location with historical maps, aerial photographs from different years, archival records, environmental information and local land-use history. A modern elevation image can contain traces from many landscape periods at once. Historical maps may show an abandoned road or building; aerial imagery may reveal crop marks; forestry records may explain a track. Context is not optional decoration: without it, derivative imagery can be difficult to interpret objectively.

8. Decide whether field or expert validation is appropriate
If the feature remains plausible after comparison, seek a qualified archaeologist, local historic-environment service or land manager. Field observation can establish whether a bank, ditch or foundation exists on the ground and whether access is safe and lawful. Do not enter private land, protected areas or active worksites without permission. Do not dig, remove objects or alter a feature while trying to confirm it.
What candidate archaeological traces can look like
LiDAR can make topographic expressions easier to notice, particularly where vegetation hides low relief. Possible candidates include:
- Linear boundaries: banks, ditches, walls, hedgerows, old roads or modern property lines.
- Rectangular or curving platforms: building foundations, quarry edges, agricultural terraces or levelled modern sites.
- Mounds and hollows: burial monuments, spoil heaps, tree throws, sinkholes or erosion features.
- Parallel lines: trackways, ploughing, drainage, pipeline corridors or forestry operations.
- Enclosures: a bank-and-ditch system, a natural break of slope, a field boundary or a recent compound.
Shape alone cannot assign a date, culture or function. The same rectangle can represent a historic foundation, a modern swimming pool, a pond or a processing artifact. The examples are clues for questions to ask, not a universal visual key.

Why natural and processing features create false positives
Classification errors
A bare-earth model depends on identifying ground returns. Low or dense vegetation can be classified incorrectly, and vegetation left in the ground class can form bumps or lines. Conversely, genuine low relief may be removed as noise. Inspect classification information and compare adjacent tiles when a feature follows a suspicious seam.
Interpolation and smoothing
The grid is calculated between measured points. Interpolation can soften a narrow ditch, connect separate returns into an artificial ridge or introduce regular patterns. A feature aligned exactly with a tile edge or repeating at a fixed spacing deserves skepticism.
Illumination artifacts
Hillshade exaggerates slopes facing the simulated light and darkens slopes facing away. A shallow feature can look like a deep trench under one azimuth and disappear under another. Always rotate the light or use another terrain derivative before treating contrast as evidence.

Modern land use
Roads, drainage, forestry, ploughing, utility corridors and landscaping can leave strong topographic signatures. A modern feature may be historically interesting, but it should not be presented as older archaeology without documentary or field support.

Geology and erosion
Bedrock ledges, glacial deposits, gullies, landslides and stream terraces can produce remarkably regular lines and enclosures. Check whether the candidate follows a natural contour, drainage pattern or known geological contact. Natural explanations often become clearer when the map is viewed at a wider scale.
What LiDAR cannot tell you by itself
- Date: A terrain model captures the survey period, not the age of every visible form.
- Function: A bank or depression may have served several purposes or none that can be inferred from shape.
- Buried contents: Features with no surface expression may be invisible, even in high-resolution data.
- Destroyed sites: Later construction, agriculture, erosion or vegetation change can erase or obscure relief.
- Complete absence: Failure to see a feature is not proof that a site or past activity was absent.
- Exact boundaries: Vegetation, point spacing and interpolation can shift or soften edges.
LiDAR is strongest at showing topographic expression. It is not a substitute for excavation, geophysics, documentary research or archaeological judgment when those are needed to answer a question.
Examples that show both the value and the limits
Southern New England forest landscapes
A scholarly study hosted by the NOAA Central Library describes airborne LiDAR revealing stone walls, building foundations and abandoned roads beneath forest cover in southern New England. The examples demonstrate why bare-earth relief is valuable where vegetation blocks ordinary aerial views. They also show the interpretive problem: some foundations can resemble modern swimming pools, and the apparent form changes with processing, vegetation and resolution. The regional examples should not be treated as a worldwide catalogue of diagnostic shapes.
Grand Canyon archaeological monitoring
A USGS evaluation of terrestrial LiDAR at archaeological sites in Grand Canyon National Park examined site-scale topographic data and geomorphic change. Terrestrial scanning can support detailed monitoring, but that evidence does not mean an airborne hillshade alone can identify or date every archaeological feature. Survey method, scale and research question matter.
Choosing a public map source and viewer
United States
USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) data are available through The National Map, and the USGS Lidar Explorer provides project information by map location. Services can include bare-earth elevation, aspect, contours, tinted hillshade, hillshade, multidirectional hillshade and slope. Coverage, acquisition date and resolution vary by area, so inspect the project metadata instead of assuming uniform detail across the country.

Outside the United States
Look for the national or regional mapping agency, open-data portal or archaeological heritage service responsible for elevation data in your area. Confirm licensing, coordinate systems, acquisition dates and whether the product is a DSM or bare-earth model. A local portal may also provide historic maps or aerial imagery that are more useful for corroboration than a higher-resolution layer without context.
Do you need specialist software?
You can learn the basic concepts with a public online viewer. Advanced work—such as filtering point classes, calculating terrain derivatives, measuring profiles or comparing dates—may require a GIS application and appropriate technical skills. The map source, metadata and interpretation method are more important than buying equipment merely to inspect a hillshade.
A comparison checklist for two LiDAR datasets
When two products cover the same place, compare them on the following axes rather than selecting the one with the most dramatic image:
- Surface represented: point cloud, bare-earth DEM/DTM or DSM.
- Acquisition date and coverage: whether the survey predates a road, harvest or construction visible today.
- Cell size and point density: the nominal grid spacing and distribution of ground returns.
- Classification and processing: ground filtering, interpolation, void filling and smoothing notes.
- Visualization: single-direction, multidirectional, slope, aspect, contours or elevation tint.
- Supporting context: historic maps, aerial photographs, land-use records and field observations available for the same area.
These criteria describe interpretive suitability; they do not create a universal ranking. A newer, denser survey may be less useful for a historical question if construction has already altered the ground, while an older survey may preserve a pre-development surface.
A compact decision test for a suspected feature
| Question | If “yes” | If “no” |
|---|---|---|
| Does the mark persist under more than one illumination direction? | Continue testing its shape and context. | Treat it as illumination-dependent and seek another visualization. |
| Does it appear in the bare-earth model? | It may be ground relief; continue checking natural and modern causes. | Consider vegetation, buildings or DSM-specific objects. |
| Does it form a coherent relationship with nearby terrain? | Describe the landform and compare it with drainage, ridges and terraces. | Check for tile seams, interpolation patterns or isolated noise. |
| Does independent historical or aerial evidence support it? | Document the agreement and the remaining alternatives. | Keep the interpretation provisional. |
| Can it be inspected lawfully and safely? | Seek appropriate expert or field validation. | Do not trespass or disturb the location; rely on remote evidence and authorities. |
How to report a candidate responsibly
Keep the claim proportional to the evidence. A useful record includes the map source, product type, acquisition date, coordinates, visualization settings, approximate dimensions, screenshots from multiple renderings and the competing explanations considered. State what is observed separately from what is inferred. “Possible linear earthwork” is defensible when the evidence shows a bank; “confirmed ancient fort” is not justified by a hillshade alone.
When sharing a location, consider whether publication could encourage trespass, looting or damage. Sensitive heritage locations may need to be reported privately to the relevant heritage authority rather than posted with precise coordinates.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Mistake: treating a hillshade like a photograph. Fix: rotate illumination and compare slope, contours or multidirectional relief.
- Mistake: assuming “LiDAR” means bare earth. Fix: read the product name and classification metadata.
- Mistake: assigning a date from geometry. Fix: use historical maps, aerial records and expert assessment.
- Mistake: trusting a single spectacular line. Fix: inspect continuity, neighboring terrain, tile boundaries and alternative causes.
- Mistake: treating non-detection as proof of absence. Fix: remember that buried, erased and very low-relief remains may not appear.
- Mistake: entering land to verify a find. Fix: check ownership, access law and heritage protections before any field visit.
Key takeaways
- A point cloud, a derived elevation model and a hillshade are related but different products.
- Use hillshade, multidirectional relief, slope, aspect, contours and elevation tint together because each emphasizes a different property.
- Describe surface form first, then test archaeological, natural and modern explanations.
- Classification, interpolation, vegetation, resolution, point density and illumination all influence what appears.
- Historical records, aerial imagery, environmental context and field or expert observation are the evidence that can turn a map clue into a stronger interpretation.
- LiDAR shows topographic expression during a particular survey window; it cannot by itself establish a feature’s date, function or complete absence.
