Read Grasim’s annual report in a fixed sequence: choose the reporting period and statement basis, use the Management Discussion & Analysis (MD&A) to form questions, inspect each business segment, then reconcile revenue, profit, cash flow, balance-sheet movements, notes and the auditor’s report. The most important guardrail is to keep standalone parent-company figures separate from consolidated group figures and to carry the fiscal year and accounting basis with every number.
Start with the current official report
Grasim Industries’ official site identifies the Integrated Annual Report 2025–26 as the current report. Its report page separates the material you need to read: Management Discussion & Analysis, statutory reports, corporate-governance information, Business Responsibility & Sustainability reporting, and both standalone and consolidated financial statements. Open the report from the official Integrated Annual Report 2025–26 page, and use the company’s investor archive when you need earlier years.
Do not treat the report page’s headline metrics as a substitute for the statements. They are a useful index of what the company wants readers to notice, while the statement pages and notes explain definitions, accounting treatment, scope and reconciliations. For a careful year-over-year comparison, download the full financial-statement sections and retain the report year in your working notes.

Before reading a single figure, write down which entity your question concerns. Standalone statements describe Grasim Industries Limited as the parent company. Consolidated statements present the group reporting view, combining the parent with the entities included under the applicable accounting rules. The same report provides both sets, so it is easy to copy a number from one basis and compare it with a number from the other by mistake.
#1 Best Overall
- Use consolidated statements when the question is “How did the Grasim group perform?” or when you are studying the group’s businesses and subsidiaries together.
- Use standalone statements when the question is specifically about the parent company’s own assets, liabilities, income, distributions or obligations.
- Keep the basis unchanged across every year in a comparison. A standalone 2024–25 figure and a consolidated 2025–26 figure are not a valid growth series.
Record three labels beside every extracted number: period, currency and basis. This simple habit prevents most serious reading errors.
Lock the period, currency and document status
The detailed exchange filing used for FY2024–25 identifies the audited annual period as 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025, presents amounts in INR, and identifies the filing as consolidated. Those labels apply to FY2024–25; do not silently attach them to the FY2025–26 report. The filing is available from the National Stock Exchange of India.
Fiscal-year labels can look like calendar years, but they are not interchangeable. Write “FY2024–25 (1 April 2024–31 March 2025)” rather than “2025” in a spreadsheet heading. If a table shows comparative periods, check whether the prior-year column has been restated, regrouped or reclassified in the notes before calculating a trend.

Use MD&A to create questions, not conclusions
Read the Management Discussion & Analysis before diving into line-by-line arithmetic. MD&A explains management’s account of the year: operating conditions, strategic actions, risks and reasons offered for changes. Treat it as management’s interpretation, then test each material explanation against the segment tables, statements and notes.
As you read, turn assertions into checkable questions:
Rank #2
- If management says demand, pricing or volumes changed, which segment’s revenue and result moved, and by how much?
- If margins improved, did the change come from operating performance, a one-off item, a lower cost line or a change in the group mix?
- If a risk is described as material, is there a related provision, contingency, impairment, covenant disclosure or sensitivity analysis in the notes?
- If capital expenditure or expansion is emphasized, where does the spending appear in investing cash flow, property and equipment, intangible assets or commitments?
Do not copy MD&A language into your conclusion without checking the underlying statement. A narrative can be directionally useful while still omitting an exceptional item, a subsidiary-level effect or a cash-flow constraint.
Map the diversified businesses through segment reporting
Grasim reports a diversified set of businesses. The FY2024–25 filed segment table identifies Cellulosic Fibres, Chemicals, Building Material, Financial Services and Others. Start by reading each segment’s revenue and segment result, then follow the reconciliation to the group total. The filing deducts inter-segment revenue when reconciling total segment revenue to revenue from operations.
Questions for each segment
- Scale: How large is the segment’s external revenue relative to the group, and is the reported figure before or after inter-segment elimination?
- Profitability: Does the segment result move in the same direction as revenue, or is the change primarily a margin movement?
- Capital intensity: Do assets, additions or commitments indicate that the segment requires substantial reinvestment?
- Volatility: Does the MD&A describe a cyclical input, demand, currency or regulatory exposure that helps explain the segment result?
- Attribution: Does the segment result reconcile cleanly to consolidated profit after finance costs, tax, exceptional items and non-controlling interests?
Segment revenue is not automatically group revenue. Internal sales between segments can inflate the sum of segment lines until the elimination is applied. Use the segment note’s reconciliation rather than adding segment figures yourself.
Read the statement of profit or loss without mixing levels
Profit-and-loss statements contain several different levels of performance. Keep these labels separate:
- Revenue from operations measures operating income reported for the period; it is not profit.
- Total profit for the period is the profit after the statement’s expenses and applicable tax effects, before separating the interests attributable to owners and non-controlling interests where the presentation requires that split.
- Profit attributable to owners of the parent is the portion assigned to the parent’s shareholders after the allocation shown in the consolidated statement.
- Exceptional items, when present, should be identified separately from recurring operations so that a one-time gain or charge is not treated as a normal run-rate result.
For FY2024–25, the consolidated filing reports ₹1,48,478.89 crore revenue from operations, ₹7,756.33 crore total profit for the period and ₹3,705.68 crore profit attributable to owners of the parent. These are distinct figures from the same filed period and consolidated basis; they should not be substituted for one another.
When comparing years, capture the exact line label and the statement in which it appears. “PAT” in a presentation may refer to profit attributable to shareholders, while “profit for the period” can include amounts attributable to non-controlling interests. Confirm the definition before calculating growth or margin.

Interpret the FY2025–26 headline snapshot carefully
The official FY2025–26 report page presents the following consolidated performance snapshot for Grasim Industries Limited:
| Metric | FY2025–26 page figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ₹1,75,431 crore | Use as the report-page revenue headline; verify the statement line and definition in the full report before comparing. |
| Net worth | ₹1,03,470 crore | Check the balance-sheet and note definitions, including whether the summary uses a particular ownership or consolidation convention. |
| EBITDA | ₹25,872 crore | Locate the reconciliation or management definition; EBITDA is a performance measure, not a statutory statement line by itself. |
| PAT attributable to shareholders | ₹4,966 crore | Match the wording to the consolidated profit-attribution line and inspect any reconciliation in the report. |
These figures are company-reported FY2025–26 summary metrics on the official report page. Do not combine them with the FY2024–25 audited filing values as though they came from one table. Before using them in a trend, verify reporting basis, accounting treatment, rounding and any restatement in the full annual report.
Reconcile earnings with cash flow
After reading profit, move to cash flow. The central question is whether accounting earnings translated into cash generated by operations. The FY2024–25 filing confirms that a cash-flow statement applies and uses the indirect method. Under that method, the operating section starts with an accounting profit measure and adjusts for non-cash items and changes in operating assets and liabilities.
How to read the three cash-flow sections
- Operating activities: Compare cash generated from operations with the relevant profit measure. Investigate large differences through depreciation, provisions, deferred tax, receivables, inventories, payables and other working-capital movements.
- Investing activities: Identify purchases and disposals of property, equipment, investments and other assets. Relate major outflows to the expansion or capacity claims in MD&A and to commitments in the notes.
- Financing activities: Trace borrowings, repayments, interest or finance-related flows, dividends and changes in equity. Ask whether financing supplied cash because operations were weak or because the group was funding planned investment.
Do not label a cash-flow gap as a failure without checking timing. A build-up of inventory ahead of production, a temporary receivables increase or a large tax payment can depress one year’s operating cash. The notes and comparative cash-flow columns provide the context needed to distinguish timing from a persistent conversion problem.
Read the balance sheet as a change statement
A balance sheet is most useful when read across two dates. For each major line, ask what changed and what caused the change:
- Assets: Separate operating assets, investments, cash and cash equivalents, goodwill or other intangibles. Large additions should tie to investing cash flow or acquisition disclosures.
- Liabilities: Identify borrowings, lease liabilities, trade payables, provisions and deferred-tax balances. Check maturity, security and covenant information in the notes where applicable.
- Working capital: Compare receivables, inventories and payables with revenue and operating cash. A rising receivable balance may explain why profit increased faster than operating cash.
- Equity: Trace retained earnings, share capital, other reserves, dividends and non-controlling interests. This helps explain why net worth changed even when profit was positive.
Use the cash-flow statement and notes to explain movements rather than treating a higher or lower balance as self-explanatory. A balance-sheet number is a position at the reporting date; it does not describe the whole year’s activity.

Make the notes do the explanatory work
The notes are where broad statement lines become analyzable. Read the accounting policies first for areas that affect comparability, then open the note attached to every material movement or unusual balance.

Notes that commonly change your interpretation
- Revenue recognition: Understand when different streams are recognized and whether contract assets, contract liabilities or variable consideration affect timing.
- Property, equipment and intangibles: Check additions, depreciation or amortization, useful lives, impairment indicators and disposals.
- Investments and financial instruments: Look for classification, fair-value methods, credit-risk information and expected-credit-loss provisions.
- Borrowings and leases: Read maturity profiles, interest terms, security, defaults and covenant disclosures.
- Provisions and contingencies: Distinguish recognized liabilities from possible obligations and understand the basis for management’s assessment.
- Related parties: Review the nature, value and outstanding balances of transactions with related entities and key management personnel.
- Tax: Reconcile the effective tax rate and identify deferred-tax assets or liabilities that could affect future periods.
- Commitments and capital allocation: Compare contractual commitments with planned investment, cash resources and financing.
When a headline measure such as EBITDA or net worth appears on the report page, use the notes and reconciliation to determine whether it is a statutory subtotal, a management-defined measure or a rounded presentation metric.
Read the auditor’s report for scope and qualifications
The FY2024–25 exchange filing labels the annual results as audited and records an unmodified opinion. That is an important starting point, not the end of the audit review. Open the complete auditor’s report in the annual-report statutory section and read the opinion, basis for opinion, key audit matters and any emphasis-of-matter or other contextual paragraphs.
An unmodified opinion means the auditor did not modify the opinion in the manner described by the report; it does not mean every business risk has disappeared or that the statements are a forecast. Key audit matters identify areas that required significant auditor attention, while notes explain the underlying estimates and judgments. Read the auditor’s language together with impairment, valuation, provisions, revenue and going-concern disclosures where those topics arise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a disciplined comparison framework
When you compare two years, two documents or standalone and consolidated reporting, use the same axes every time:
| Comparison axis | Check before drawing a conclusion |
|---|---|
| Reporting basis | Both figures are standalone parent-company or both are consolidated group figures. |
| Period and currency | Fiscal-year dates match and amounts are presented in INR on the same scale. |
| Growth and composition | Revenue and profit changes are traced to segments, with inter-segment eliminations included. |
| Earnings quality | Profit is compared with operating cash flow, and recurring items are separated from exceptional items. |
| Financial position | Assets, liabilities, debt, working capital and capital allocation are reviewed together. |
| Audit and disclosure | Audit opinion, key audit matters, accounting policies and material notes are comparable. |
This framework describes what to inspect; it does not label a trend as good or bad automatically. The same revenue growth can have very different implications depending on cash conversion, leverage, segment mix and one-time items.
Best Value
A repeatable reading workflow
- Download the right report. Begin at the official FY2025–26 report page and locate the standalone and consolidated statement downloads.
- Write the scope line. Record report year, fiscal dates, INR presentation currency and whether the statements are standalone or consolidated.
- Read MD&A once without calculating. Mark every explanation that can be tested in a segment table, statement or note.
- Read the segment review. Follow Cellulosic Fibres, Chemicals, Building Material, Financial Services and Others through revenue, segment result and the inter-segment reconciliation.
- Extract the statement lines exactly. Keep revenue, total profit, attributable profit, exceptional items and comparative columns in separate fields.
- Trace cash and balance-sheet movements. Use the indirect-method reconciliation, investing and financing sections, then tie major asset and liability changes to notes.
- Read material notes and audit language. Focus on policies, estimates, commitments, related parties, contingencies, key audit matters and any contextual paragraphs.
- Write the conclusion last. State what changed, which businesses explain it, whether cash supports the earnings, and which disclosures limit confidence.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mixing a page headline with a statement line
Problem: A rounded FY2025–26 page metric is compared with an FY2024–25 audited statement value without checking definitions. Correction: Open the full report, match the exact line label, preserve the period and basis, and note any reconciliation.
Adding segment revenue without eliminating internal sales
Problem: Segment totals appear larger than group revenue. Correction: Use the segment note’s inter-segment elimination and reconcile to revenue from operations.
Calling revenue “profit”
Problem: A large revenue figure is treated as evidence of equivalent earnings. Correction: Read operating revenue, total profit and profit attributable to owners as separate lines, then inspect costs, tax, exceptional items and non-controlling interests.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming profit equals cash
Problem: A positive bottom line is taken as proof of strong cash generation. Correction: Read the indirect-method operating reconciliation and investigate working-capital and non-cash adjustments.
Stopping at “unmodified opinion”
Problem: The audit label is treated as a guarantee about future performance. Correction: Read the complete auditor’s report, key audit matters and the notes for estimates, contingencies and other judgments.
Comparing unlike years or entities
Problem: Fiscal periods, consolidation scope or accounting presentation changed. Correction: Put period, currency, basis and any restatement note beside every number before calculating a trend.
Final checklist before you rely on a conclusion
- Have you stated whether the analysis is standalone or consolidated?
- Are the fiscal dates and INR scale recorded for every figure?
- Did you use MD&A as an explanation to test rather than as proof?
- Did you follow each reported segment and the inter-segment reconciliation?
- Did you distinguish revenue, total profit and profit attributable to owners?
- Did you separate recurring operations from exceptional items?
- Did you compare earnings with operating cash flow and explain working-capital movements?
- Did you connect investing and financing cash flows to balance-sheet changes and commitments?
- Did you read accounting policies, material notes, related-party disclosures and contingencies?
- Did you inspect the complete auditor’s report rather than relying only on the opinion label?
- Did you keep FY2025–26 report-page summaries separate from FY2024–25 audited filing figures?
The practical outcome is a traceable chain from management’s explanation to segment performance, statutory profit, cash movement, financial position, notes and audit context. That chain is the safest way to read a large diversified-company report without mistaking a headline number for the whole business.
