To read an NSE futures or options contract correctly, identify the exact underlying and series, confirm the exchange-maintained lot size and expiry, calculate the notional exposure, check the position-specific margin, and then read open interest together with volume and bid/ask liquidity. These conventions are specific examples from India’s NSE equity-derivatives market; other exchanges and instruments can use different rules.

What a futures-and-options contract line is telling you

A derivatives quote is not just a price. It describes a standardized contract with an underlying instrument, a quantity multiplier, an expiry date and risk controls. A line such as “Underlying: [instrument] | Contract: [futures or option] | Expiry: [date] | Strike: [if an option] | Lot size: [units]” should be decoded in that order.

Field Meaning Question to answer
Underlying The share, index or other instrument whose value drives the contract. What exactly am I exposed to?
Contract type Future, call option or put option. Is the position an obligation or a right, and am I buying or writing?
Expiry The scheduled final date of that particular series. How much time remains, and what settlement rule applies?
Strike The exercise price of an option. At what price can the option be exercised?
Lot size The number of underlying units represented by one contract. How many shares or index units does one lot control?
Open interest Outstanding contracts still open in that series. How much participation exists in this exact expiry and strike?

Do not assume that a remembered lot size, a familiar Tuesday expiry or an old margin percentage still applies. NSE says permitted lot sizes are stipulated by the exchange and directs users to its current futures-and-options contract file. The NSE contract and margin pages cited here were accessed on 13 October 2026; live specifications can change.

What is lot size in F&O?

Lot size is the contract multiplier

Lot size is the number of underlying units represented by one exchange-traded contract. If the current contract file says one lot contains 50 shares, one futures contract represents 50 shares. Two lots represent 100 shares; five lots represent 250 shares. For an index contract, the units are index points multiplied by the exchange’s specified multiplier rather than physical shares.

NSE states that the permitted lot size for futures and options on an individual security is the same for a given underlying, subject to exchange changes. The applicable quantity-freeze limit is a separate field. A broker’s order screen may prevent an order above that freeze quantity or require it to be split, so check both values in the current contract file.

How to calculate units from lots

Total underlying units = lot size × number of lots.

For example, if a purely illustrative contract has a lot size of 25 and you select four lots, the position represents 100 underlying units. This arithmetic example is not a current NSE lot-size quotation. Use the live exchange file for the actual contract before entering an order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why old lot-size examples are unsafe

  • Exchanges can revise lot sizes to keep contract values within their design ranges.
  • A contract may be renamed, introduced or discontinued while the underlying remains the same.
  • A search result or trading tutorial can show a historical lot size that no longer matches the live contract.
  • NSE pages may describe minimum contract-value requirements at introduction; those statements do not replace the current downloadable lot-size file.

Notional exposure is not the same as margin

Calculate the exposure represented by a futures position

Notional exposure describes the underlying value represented by the contract. For a futures position, the educational formula in a SEBI-filed scheme document is:

Futures exposure = futures price × lot size × number of contracts.

Suppose an illustrative futures quote is 1,200, the lot size is 25 and the position is one contract. The represented exposure is 1,200 × 25 = 30,000 currency units. That is the value controlled by the contract at that quoted price, not the amount that must necessarily be paid upfront.

Calculate a bought-option position’s premium exposure

For an option buyer, the same document gives:

Bought-option exposure = premium paid × lot size × number of contracts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an illustrative premium is 18, the lot size is 25 and one contract is bought, the premium amount is 18 × 25 = 450 currency units before fees and taxes. The option’s market value can change after purchase, and the buyer’s loss is generally limited to the premium paid plus applicable charges if the option is held to expiry. That statement describes the economic structure, not a broker-specific fee schedule.

Exposure and collateral answer different questions

Term What it measures What it does not tell you
Notional or contract value The underlying value represented by the contract at the relevant futures price, index level or option terms. It is not a guaranteed upfront payment or a live margin quote.
Premium The price paid by an option buyer or received by an option writer, multiplied by lot size and contracts for the cash amount. It does not describe the writer’s full risk or required collateral.
Margin Collateral and risk resources required to carry a derivatives position. It is not the contract’s full notional value.

How much margin is needed for one lot?

There is no universal one-lot margin number

NSE Clearing describes initial margin as a combination of SPAN margin and other applicable components. Its margin information also discusses delivery margin, margin on consolidated crystallized obligations and extreme-loss margin. The amount depends on the exact underlying, expiry, price, position, volatility, settlement status and whether the position is an option buy or short option. A broker’s displayed figure can change while the market is open.

Therefore, “one lot” does not answer the margin question by itself. You need the current contract, your side of the trade and the broker’s current risk calculation. The margin shown before order submission is the relevant operational number, not a historical percentage from an article.

Buyer and writer treatment can differ

An option buyer pays a premium and does not have the same collateral profile as an option writer. NSE Clearing’s margin material distinguishes short options in certain calculations, with some requirements based on the value of the underlying. A writer can therefore face substantially different collateral and loss exposure from a buyer in the same strike and expiry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For futures, both long and short positions are subject to exchange risk controls, and required collateral can change as prices and volatility move. Intraday and overnight requirements may also differ according to the broker’s rules and the exchange’s current calculations.

What the NSE extreme-loss figures mean

The NSE Clearing margin page accessed on 13 October 2026 displays extreme-loss-margin rates of 2% of notional value for index derivatives and 3.5% of notional value for stock derivatives in the stated categories. These are exchange rule parameters, not a complete margin quote. The page lists qualifications and exceptions, including particular short-option cases, so do not multiply one of these rates by a contract value and assume the result is the amount your broker will block.

Use margin information safely

  1. Identify the exact underlying, contract type, expiry and strike.
  2. Confirm the current lot size and quantity-freeze limit in the NSE contract file.
  3. Enter the intended number of lots and buy-or-sell side in your broker’s margin calculator.
  4. Check whether the position is intraday, overnight, near delivery or otherwise subject to an additional requirement.
  5. Recheck the required funds immediately before placing and carrying the trade; exchange calculations and broker risk settings can change.

A November 2023 SEBI-hosted scheme document contains historical educational examples about margin and notes that futures margin can vary with factors such as volatility and the difference between spot and contract price. Its examples are not present-day NSE requirements.

When does an options contract expire?

Expiry belongs to the precise series

Expiry is the scheduled final date of a particular futures or options series. The answer depends on the exchange, underlying, contract family and whether the series is weekly, monthly or longer-dated. Read the instrument specification and the exchange holiday calendar rather than inferring a date from another contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NSE Nifty example

The NSE Nifty 50 specification accessed on 13 October 2026 lists weekly options expiring each Tuesday and monthly options expiring on the last Tuesday of the expiry month. These dates are an NSE example, not a universal rule for all index options or all markets. Confirm the live calendar because exchange policy can change.

NSE individual-stock example

NSE’s individual-security futures-and-options specification states a last-Tuesday expiry for the relevant contracts. If that Tuesday is a trading holiday, expiry moves to the preceding trading day. Do not carry this rule over to another exchange or product without checking its specification.

Settlement and delivery risk

The NSE individual-stock options page says those options are physically settled. A position that remains open near expiry can therefore create a delivery obligation rather than merely a cash difference. Check the contract’s current settlement method, your broker’s cut-off times and any delivery-margin policy before holding an individual-stock option into expiry. The settlement method for a different contract must be verified separately.

NSE’s plain-language definition is useful here: “An option gives a person the right but not the obligation to buy or sell something.” The buyer has that right; the writer assumes the corresponding obligation under the contract terms.

What does open interest tell you?

Open interest counts positions that remain open

Open interest (OI) is the number of outstanding contracts in a specific series that have not been closed or otherwise removed through settlement. Read it using the exchange’s displayed unit and aggregation: OI for an index future, a particular stock-option expiry, and a single strike are not interchangeable figures.

Open interest versus volume

Measure Counts Useful question
Open interest Contracts still outstanding at the reporting point. How much open participation remains in this series?
Volume Contracts traded during a stated period. How active has trading been today or during the selected interval?
Bid/ask depth and spread Displayed willingness to buy or sell and the price gap between them. How easily might an order be executed without a large price concession?

Volume can be high even when positions are opened and closed quickly; OI can be high while current trading is quiet. Use all three measures for a liquidity assessment of the exact expiry and strike.

Why OI is not a directional signal by itself

A rising OI value shows that more contracts remain open, not whether the next price move will be up or down. Every open contract has a long side and a short side. Without knowing prices, trade initiation, hedges, spreads and the participants’ objectives, OI alone cannot identify which side will profit.

NSE uses aggregate OI in market-wide monitoring and position-limit processes. Its rules also describe situations in which trading can be restricted to closing trades after thresholds are breached. OI appears in the exchange’s treatment of whether certain option strikes remain available. These regulatory uses make OI important, but they do not turn it into a prediction tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical OI reading method

  1. Select one exact contract series, not a blended total across expiries.
  2. Record OI and volume with their timestamps and units.
  3. Compare the bid/ask spread and visible depth for the same strike and expiry.
  4. Check the underlying price and the time remaining to expiry.
  5. Treat any directional interpretation as a hypothesis requiring other evidence, never as a conclusion from OI alone.

How to compare two futures or options contracts

When two series appear to be alternatives, compare the same fields side by side. A lower quoted premium can still represent a larger contract if its lot size is bigger, and a high-OI series can still have a wide spread.

Comparison What to record Why it matters
Underlying and multiplier Instrument or index and units per lot from the current contract file. Determines the exposure created by each lot.
Expiry and time remaining Exact date, weekly/monthly classification and holiday adjustment. Determines time value, roll timing and expiry-related obligations.
Notional exposure Futures price or underlying level × lot size × lots; for a bought option, premium × lot size × contracts. Shows the scale of the position independently of collateral.
Margin and settlement Current broker margin, buyer/writer side, delivery or cash settlement. Shows funding needs and what can happen at expiry.
Liquidity OI, recent volume, spread and bid/ask depth for the exact series. Helps assess execution quality and exit practicality.

Step-by-step: read a contract before placing an order

  1. Choose the exact underlying. Distinguish an index from an individual security and verify the exchange segment.
  2. Identify the instrument. Mark it as a future, call or put, and note whether you are buying or writing.
  3. Read the expiry field. Confirm the date in the live instrument specification and check for a holiday adjustment.
  4. For an option, record strike and style. A call and put at the same strike have different rights and risk profiles.
  5. Retrieve the current lot size. Use NSE’s current F&O contract file, not an old screenshot or remembered value.
  6. Compute units and notional exposure. Multiply the lot size by lots, then apply the relevant futures price, underlying level or option premium formula.
  7. Check settlement. Verify whether the contract is cash or physically settled and what your broker requires near expiry.
  8. Check current margin. Use the broker’s position-specific calculator for the intended side, quantity and holding period.
  9. Inspect liquidity. Read OI with volume, spread and depth for that exact expiry and strike.
  10. Review order limits. Confirm quantity-freeze limits, available funds and any exchange or broker restrictions before submitting.

Common reading mistakes and fixes

Using a stale lot size

Symptom: Your calculated exposure does not match the order ticket. Fix: Download the current NSE contract file and recalculate units, notional value and quantity-freeze compliance.

Calling notional value “margin”

Symptom: You assume the full contract value must be paid, or you expect a fixed percentage to cover every position. Fix: Keep the exposure calculation separate from the live SPAN and other margin components shown by the broker.

Assuming every Tuesday is an expiry

Symptom: You apply the Nifty weekly schedule to a stock option or another exchange. Fix: Open the precise instrument specification and calendar; stock contracts can move to the preceding trading day when the stated Tuesday is a holiday.

Reading high OI as bullish or bearish proof

Symptom: You infer direction from one OI number. Fix: Add price, volume, spread, depth, expiry distance and the contract’s position context. OI is an outstanding-position measure, not a stand-alone forecast.

Ignoring physical settlement

Symptom: An individual-stock option held near expiry creates an unexpected delivery or funding requirement. Fix: Verify settlement terms and broker cut-offs before carrying the position into expiry.

Final check before trading

  • Current underlying and contract type are identified.
  • Current lot size and quantity-freeze limits were taken from the exchange file.
  • Expiry date and any holiday adjustment are confirmed.
  • Strike, call/put designation and buy/write side are correct.
  • Units and notional exposure were calculated separately from margin.
  • Position-specific margin was checked immediately before the order.
  • Cash or physical settlement was verified for the exact contract.
  • OI, volume, bid/ask spread and depth were reviewed for the same expiry and strike.
  • Available funds, broker restrictions and expiry cut-offs are understood.
