Use technical analysis to organize what a crypto chart is showing—not to predict a certain outcome. Start with candles and price levels, add only a few indicators that answer different questions, then write down what would invalidate your scenario and how much loss you can tolerate before considering a trade.

What technical analysis can—and cannot—tell you

Technical analysis interprets past price and volume behavior to look for possible trends, levels, momentum changes, and volatility. A chart is a record of market behavior; it does not explain every move or establish what will happen next.

Indicators are calculations based on historical price and/or volume data. They can help describe conditions, but they can also give false signals—particularly when price moves sideways or the market is illiquid. Combining tools that measure different things can add context, but it does not make a signal certain. Binance Academy’s indicator guide, dated June 18, 2026, cautions that indicator thresholds do not guarantee reversals and that relying on one indicator alone is unwise.

The available evidence does not establish that technical analysis is profitable in 2026, or that any particular indicator or setup has a reliable win rate after costs. Treat a chart-based idea as a scenario to assess, not a forecast or a promise.

How do I read candlesticks and support and resistance?

Read one candle at a time

A candlestick summarizes four prices for its selected interval: open, high, low, and close (OHLC). The body shows the range between the open and close; the wicks show the high and low reached during that interval. A candle is not a complete account of everything that happened between those prices.

The interval changes what a candle represents. A one-hour candle summarizes one hour; a daily candle summarizes one day. Binance’s charting documentation describes adjustable candle intervals, chart controls, drawing tools, indicators, and a depth chart for unfilled orders. Those are features of its own interface, not a claim that every charting service offers the same tools or data.

Mark areas, not magic lines

Support and resistance are commonly used names for price areas where the market previously reacted. A support area is one where price has previously found buying interest or slowed a decline; a resistance area is one where price has previously met selling pressure or slowed an advance. Neither is guaranteed to hold. Mark a zone broad enough to reflect the prior reactions rather than treating a single exact price as a boundary that must work.

Before interpreting a chart, identify the trading pair and the interval you are viewing. Keep the interval consistent while assessing a scenario; changing it changes the detail and scale of the price history you are interpreting. A depth chart may show unfilled orders in an interface that offers one, but that view is not the same as a record of completed trades.

Which indicators should a beginner use for crypto?

A small set is easier to interpret than a chart crowded with tools that repeat the same information. These indicators frame different questions; none supplies a stand-alone instruction to buy or sell.

Tool What it summarizes How to interpret it cautiously
Moving average Smoothed price history that can provide trend context. Because it is calculated from past prices, it lags. It describes prior movement rather than confirming what comes next.
Relative Strength Index (RSI) Recent momentum on a scale from 0 to 100. The often-cited 70 and 30 areas are conventions for overbought or oversold conditions, not automatic reversal signals.
Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) The relationship between moving averages, used to frame momentum changes. In the conventional configuration described by Binance Academy, it compares the 12-period and 26-period exponential moving averages (EMAs) with a 9-period signal line. Crossovers can lag and be noisy.
Bollinger Bands Price relative to a moving average and surrounding bands, giving volatility context. A touch or move beyond a band does not establish direction or guarantee a reversal.

For example, a moving average can help frame the broad trend while RSI describes recent momentum. Those are different questions, but agreement between them still does not remove uncertainty. Adding several momentum indicators that respond to similar price changes can create an impression of confirmation without adding much independent information.

Does RSI tell me when to buy or sell crypto?

No. RSI summarizes recent momentum; it does not identify a certain turning point. A reading in a commonly labeled overbought or oversold area can persist, and a threshold crossing does not guarantee that price will reverse. Read RSI alongside the chart’s context, and treat it as one observation rather than a trade instruction.

How do I turn chart observations into a scenario?

Write a scenario before acting on a chart signal. The goal is to make the reasoning and the risk visible, not to turn the chart into a promise.

  1. State the context. Name the pair and interval, then describe the broad price behavior you see, such as a rising, falling, or sideways market.
  2. Identify the condition you are watching. This might be how price behaves near a previously marked support or resistance zone, or whether momentum changes. Be specific about the observation; do not treat an indicator threshold as an instruction.
  3. Define invalidation. Say what observable change would mean your original idea no longer fits the chart. A level or condition is part of your reasoning, not a guarantee that the market will respect it.
  4. Set a maximum acceptable loss before entry. Decide what loss you can tolerate and whether the idea is worth that risk. If you cannot define the risk in terms you understand, do not treat the chart as sufficient grounds to proceed.
  5. Record the outcome. Note what happened, including false signals and scenarios that never triggered. This lets you review your reasoning without counting only the cases that appeared to work.

Some chart interfaces provide a position-planning graphic where a user can set an entry, target, and stop level. Such a graphic is a way to display assumptions; its presence is not evidence that a setup works or a recommendation to take it.

What crypto-specific risks should you account for?

Crypto assets can be highly volatile and speculative. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy warned in its March 23, 2023 investor alert: “Investments in crypto asset securities can be exceptionally risky, and are often volatile.” That warning concerns crypto asset securities; it should not be read as a 2026 measurement of every crypto asset or market.

Spot trading and leveraged derivatives are different exposures. In its virtual-currency advisory, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission notes that virtual-currency values can be more volatile than traditional fiat currencies and that volatility’s effects are amplified in margined futures. A chart signal does not make leverage safe, and the risk discussion for margined futures should not be conflated with holding an asset in a spot market.

How can I practise reading charts?

Use historical charts or a paper-trading setup as a learning exercise, not as proof of expected profits. Before looking at what happens next, label the broad trend, mark any relevant support or resistance zones, and write down one condition that would invalidate your scenario.

  • Record the pair, interval, observations, and indicators you used.
  • Write what you expected to see and what would have changed your view.
  • Review the next price action, noting false signals, missed scenarios, and cases where the outcome was unclear.
  • Keep the exercise focused: add an indicator only when you can state what distinct question it helps you examine.

This routine can make chart-reading more deliberate, but it does not establish that a method will work in live trading.
