btop is easiest to read as a set of related, time-based clues: CPU shows processor activity, memory shows RAM and swap state, disk shows device busy time and/or transfer speed, and network shows traffic on a selected interface. Read the trend first, then correlate a change with processes and the workload that was running. No single graph proves the cause of a slowdown.
What btop is showing
btop is a terminal resource monitor for the processor, memory, disks, network, and processes. Its panels are complementary views of current activity rather than separate diagnostic tools. A spike in one panel tells you where to investigate; the process list, timing of the workload, and follow-up checks help establish why it happened.
| Panel | Primary question | What the reading represents |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | How busy are the processors? | Processor activity over the recent sampling history, with optional detected attributes such as frequency or temperature. |
| Memory | How is RAM being used? | RAM and, when enabled, swap information presented as graphs or meters. |
| Disk | Is storage occupied, and how much data is moving? | Device I/O activity (busy time) and read/write throughput; the available view depends on configuration. |
| Network | How much traffic is crossing the link? | Download and upload throughput for the selected network interface. |
| Processes | Which workload might be contributing? | Per-process CPU and memory values, with sorting, filtering, tree, and detailed-statistics views available in btop. |
The graphs summarize samples, not every instant. A narrow spike can disappear between samples, while a sustained rise remains visible as a trend. Interpret the shape and duration before reacting to a single number.
Set up the display before interpreting it
Two btop installations can look different while reporting the same machine. Confirm the display controls first, especially when comparing a screenshot with your own terminal.

Choose a sensible update interval
The upstream README recommends an update time of 2,000 milliseconds or more for better graph sample times. A shorter interval can make the interface feel more immediate, but it also gives each graph less time between samples and can make short-lived activity harder to interpret. A longer interval smooths the view and is usually easier to read for sustained workloads. Treat the interval as part of the measurement context: a “high” graph is high during that sampling window, not necessarily for the entire period since the program started.
Check what each box is plotting
- CPU graphs can use total activity or detected attributes in their upper and lower portions. Frequency and temperature are optional views.
- Memory can be rendered as graphs instead of meters, and swap can be shown or hidden.
- Swap may also be configured to appear as a disk, changing where it is listed.
- Disk display can use a regular view or an I/O mode with larger read/write speed graphs.
- Network graphs depend on the selected interface, automatic scaling, and the chosen decimal or binary bitrate units.
Labels and menu wording can differ by installed version. The upstream default configuration is labeled btop v1.4.5, but your package may expose different options. Use your local options or help view as the authority for the controls available in that build.
Make the terminal readable
The terminal and font are part of the display pipeline. The project recommends truecolor for the best experience and also documents lower-color and TTY modes. Graphs may use braille characters; if those glyphs are missing or rendered at the wrong width, characters can clip into one another or borders and text can misalign. Those symptoms generally indicate a fontconfig or terminal-rendering problem rather than a resource measurement problem. Try a font with braille support, a correctly configured terminal, or a less demanding color/TTY mode before drawing conclusions from a distorted graph.

Read total activity as recent processor busy time
The CPU graph is a history of processor activity over the selected sampling interval. A high total reading means the processors have been busy during that interval. A low reading means there was available processing capacity during the samples shown; it does not prove that every application was responsive, because storage waits, network waits, memory pressure, or a blocked dependency can still slow a task.
Look for persistence and pattern. A brief crest during compilation or a request burst is different from a high line that remains near the top. If the total rises and falls in step with a visible workload, that correlation is useful evidence. It is still not proof of root cause by itself.
Understand total versus detected CPU attributes
The default configuration allows the upper and lower parts of the CPU box to show detected attributes, while total activity remains available. Depending on the host and configuration, those attributes can include frequency or temperature. A frequency graph answers “what clock rate is being reported?” rather than “how busy is the CPU?” Temperature answers “what sensor value is available?” rather than “how much work is queued.” Keep those axes separate when reading a mixed graph.

Use per-process CPU values as leads
When total CPU is elevated, inspect the process list and sort it by CPU usage if needed. Filtering, tree view, and detailed process statistics can help connect a system-wide rise to a process or process family. A process at the top of the list is a candidate contributor, not automatic proof that it caused the symptom: sampling timing, multiple busy processes, kernel work, and I/O waits can all complicate the relationship.
Treat temperature and wattage as conditional data
Temperature depends on available sensors and the sensor selection used by the host. CPU wattage is an optional indicator, not a guaranteed field. The upstream configuration says wattage requires extended capabilities, a setuid installation, or running btop with sudo. If the value is absent, that can reflect permissions or platform support rather than zero power use. Do not compare a missing value with a measured zero.
How to read memory and swap
Start with the graph or meter that is actually enabled
The memory box can use graphs instead of meters. A meter emphasizes the current proportion; a graph adds recent history. Neither presentation changes the underlying state, but the visual emphasis differs. Before comparing layouts, verify whether your display is in graph mode and note the units shown by your build.
Separate RAM from swap
Swap can be shown or hidden, and an option can render swap as a disk. If swap is configured as a disk, it may no longer appear where you expect in the memory area. Check that setting before concluding that swap data is missing or that a disk entry represents ordinary file activity.
Use the categories btop actually displays rather than applying a universal formula to every screenshot. Operating systems can classify memory as used, cached, reclaimable, or available in different ways, and the README does not establish one cross-platform definition for every category. Compare the trend within the same host and configuration. A rising swap graph is a reason to inspect memory pressure and the processes using RAM; it is not, by itself, proof that the machine is out of physical memory.
Correlate memory pressure with processes
If memory usage or swap activity rises, sort or filter the process list by memory and inspect the largest consumers. Check whether the change follows a known workload, a growing process, or a short-lived burst. The panel shows state and history; it does not identify leaks or determine whether reclaimable cache is harming performance without additional investigation.

How to read disk activity
Busy time and throughput are different measurements
btop exposes disk I/O activity and read/write speeds, and its configuration describes I/O activity percentage as disk busy time. Busy time is the portion of the sampling window during which the device was occupied handling I/O. Throughput is the volume of data transferred per unit time. Read them as separate axes:
| Observation | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| High busy time, modest read/write speed | The device is occupied for much of the window even though little data is moving. Small or latency-sensitive operations can produce this pattern. |
| High read/write speed, lower busy time | The device is transferring a large amount of data efficiently during the sampled period. |
| Both high | Storage is handling sustained work and may be a limiting resource, depending on the workload and device. |
| Both low | There is little storage traffic in the selected view during the interval; another resource may explain the delay. |
A busy disk with modest throughput can still be a bottleneck, but the disk panel alone does not identify the process responsible for every I/O operation. Use process details and workload timing to continue the investigation.
Know which devices are included
Disk display can be filtered by mountpoint. The defaults also include physical-disk filtering and reading devices from /etc/fstab. These choices affect which device appears in the list. A missing disk entry therefore does not automatically mean there is no storage activity; first check the filters and the mountpoint scope.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose the view that answers your question
The regular disk view is useful for an overview of devices, while the documented I/O mode provides larger read/write speed graphs. Use the activity percentage when your question is “is the device occupied?” and the speed graph when your question is “how much data is moving?” Avoid treating a speed value as a substitute for busy time.
How to read network activity
Download and upload are throughput over time
The network graphs show traffic received and sent by the selected interface. Read the direction explicitly: download is inbound traffic and upload is outbound traffic. A rising line means more bits are crossing that interface during the sampled interval; it does not describe application quality on its own.
Verify the interface and scale
The selected interface determines what btop can see. A machine with wired, wireless, virtual, VPN, bridge, or container interfaces can show very different numbers depending on that choice. If the graph looks idle while an application is transferring data, confirm that the active interface is selected.

Automatic scaling is enabled in the documented default configuration. When automatic scaling is on, configured fixed graph limits are ignored. This can make a graph redraw its vertical scale as traffic changes, so compare the numeric labels and units rather than the apparent height alone. The display can use decimal or binary bitrate units; check which convention is enabled before comparing values with another tool or installation.

Do not read network throughput as network quality
A traffic graph is not a latency, packet-loss, jitter, link-saturation, or application-response measurement. If those are the actual concerns, use a diagnostic designed for that metric. btop establishes how much traffic is passing through the selected interface, not whether a connection is performing well for a particular application.
A practical cross-panel reading routine
Use this sequence when a machine feels slow or a graph changes unexpectedly:
- Confirm the context. Note the update interval, units, selected network interface, disk filters, and whether swap is displayed in the memory box or as a disk.
- Find the sustained change. Watch the graphs long enough to distinguish a short sample from a continuing trend. Keep the sampling interval in mind.
- Classify the resource. CPU activity points toward processor work; memory or swap changes point toward RAM pressure; disk busy time or throughput points toward storage; network throughput points toward traffic on one interface.
- Correlate with processes. Sort, filter, or switch to tree view to find processes whose CPU or memory use changes with the system-wide graph.
- Check the matching axis. For disks, compare busy time with throughput. For networks, verify direction, interface, units, and scale. For CPU, distinguish total activity from frequency, temperature, or wattage.
- Validate outside the graph when necessary. Use workload timing and a separate, appropriate diagnostic for questions btop does not measure, such as latency or packet loss.
This method prevents a common mistake: treating the most visually prominent panel as the explanation. A busy CPU can coexist with heavy disk waits, and a quiet network can coexist with a memory problem.

Common interpretation mistakes and fixes
“The graph is high, so that resource is the cause.”
A high graph identifies activity, not causation. Correlate it with process changes and the timing of the workload. For storage and networking, make sure you are reading the correct axis and interface first.
“The disk is at 100%, so it must be transferring a lot.”
Disk busy time and transfer speed are independent measurements. A device can spend most of the interval occupied while moving relatively little data. Check the read/write speed graph as well as activity percentage.

“No network traffic means the connection is down.”
It may mean btop is watching a quiet or different interface. Confirm the selected interface and the graph’s units and scale. Also remember that throughput does not measure latency or packet loss.
“Swap is missing.”
Swap may be hidden or configured to appear as a disk. Check the memory and disk display options before diagnosing a system state.
“A malformed graph means the monitor is broken.”
Clipped braille characters and misaligned borders usually point to terminal or font rendering. Try a braille-capable font, truecolor, or an appropriate lower-color/TTY mode.
“Wattage or temperature should always be present.”
Those fields depend on host support. Temperature needs usable sensors and selection; wattage needs the additional capabilities, setuid setup, or privileges documented by the project. Absence is not a zero reading.
What btop can—and cannot—tell you
btop is excellent for seeing when a resource changes and for narrowing the next question. Its process views can connect system-wide CPU or memory movement to visible workloads, and its disk and network controls let you choose a useful scope. It is not a formal performance diagnosis by itself. Graphs are sampled summaries, process correlation is evidence rather than proof, and several important questions—such as network latency, packet loss, or the exact cause of an I/O wait—require other measurements.
Use the display consistently: keep track of the interval, scope, units, and enabled views; compare trends within the same configuration; and investigate a sustained change with the process list and a metric-specific follow-up. That produces a more reliable answer than reacting to a single bar or color.
