Read a CME agricultural futures quote in four passes: identify the product and delivery month, confirm the quotation unit, apply the contract quantity, and convert the minimum price fluctuation into dollars. Then use the current exchange specification for the exact contract year to distinguish its last trading date from its last delivery date.

For example, CME shows corn symbol ZCZ6: ZC is the corn Globex product code, followed by a delivery-month code and a year indicator. A standard corn contract represents 5,000 bushels, and its 0.25-cent-per-bushel minimum fluctuation is $12.50 per contract. Those figures describe the contract specification, not a forecast or a complete measure of trading risk.

The four fields to read first

1. Separate the product code, delivery-month code, and year indicator

A futures symbol is a compact identifier. It combines the underlying product with a delivery-month code and a year indicator. On CME’s corn page, the example is ZCZ6, and the page identifies ZC as the corn Globex product code. See the current corn contract specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The remaining characters identify the contract month and year under the symbol convention used by the exchange or data vendor. The month code tells you which delivery month the contract represents; it is not itself an expiration date. The year indicator identifies the contract year, but a vendor can render symbols differently, particularly in the way it displays years. Confirm the symbol legend and the contract calendar rather than assuming that every platform uses identical formatting.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not infer a calendar date from the month letter alone. A delivery-month code tells you the month, while the official specification supplies the applicable last trading and delivery dates for that product and contract year.

2. Read the quote in its stated unit

Corn and soybeans are quoted in U.S. cents per bushel. That means a displayed number is not automatically a dollar price per bushel. Confirm the quote-unit field on the product page or in your data vendor before converting it. CME provides separate pages for corn and soybeans.

The corn page uses 502'0 as a display example. Treat that as exchange-style notation, not as an amount of $502. The apostrophe and fractional portion are part of the quote convention, and a vendor may render the same market differently. First establish what the feed’s whole-number and fractional fields mean; only then convert a cents-per-bushel quote to dollars per bushel by dividing the cents value by 100. If a feed confirms that 502'0 represents 502.00 cents, the corresponding dollar expression is $5.02 per bushel.

Price notation and price movement are separate questions. A quote can be displayed in a specialized fraction format while the minimum price fluctuation is specified in cents per bushel. Use the exchange’s tick field for the movement calculation instead of trying to infer it from punctuation.

3. Apply the contract quantity and unit

Contract size is the amount of the underlying commodity represented by one contract. For the benchmark grain contracts below, the quantity is measured in bushels. CME’s educational material uses 5,000 bushels of corn as the standard example, and its grain-and-oilseed overview identifies 5,000 bushels as the usual benchmark size for major grain contracts.

Product Standard contract Mini contract
Corn 5,000 bushels 1,000 bushels
Soybeans 5,000 bushels 1,000 bushels
Chicago (SRW) wheat 5,000 bushels 1,000 bushels
KC wheat 5,000 bushels 1,000 bushels

The standard and mini quantities above come from CME’s grain and oilseed overview and grain and oilseed fact card. A mini contract is not merely a differently named quote: multiplying the same price move by 1,000 bushels produces a different dollar exposure from a 5,000-bushel contract.

Other agricultural contracts use other units. CME’s overview identifies soybean oil as measured in pounds, soybean meal in short tons, and rough rice in a different unit and quantity from the benchmark bushel contracts. Never carry the 5,000-bushel multiplier from corn into another agricultural product.

4. Convert the minimum tick into dollars

The minimum price fluctuation, or tick, is the smallest permitted price change for that contract. CME lists corn’s minimum fluctuation as 0.25 cent per bushel and the full-size contract value of one such tick as $12.50.

The calculation is:

0.25 cent = $0.0025 per bushel
$0.0025 × 5,000 bushels = $12.50 per standard corn contract

This is the dollar effect of one minimum tick in one full-size corn contract. It is not a prediction of the total gain or loss on a position, and it does not replace a broader risk calculation. A position can move many ticks, and the contract’s required quantity and delivery terms still matter.

Do not assume the same tick value for mini corn. The mini contract has a different quantity, so verify its precise minimum fluctuation and dollar value in the current product specification before calculating exposure. CME’s contract-specification guide explains that the specification is the place to check the underlying asset, quantity, delivery location, and delivery date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standard, mini, and micro agricultural contracts

CME also lists micro agriculture contracts at one-tenth of standard size. The Micro Ag futures page lists 500-bushel Micro Corn, Micro SRW Wheat, and Micro Soybeans contracts. The one-tenth relationship describes the quantity relative to the corresponding 5,000-bushel standard contract; it does not authorize you to assume an identical tick size or settlement rule. Check the individual micro specification for those details.

  • Mini: 1,000 bushels for the corn, soybean, Chicago-wheat, and KC-wheat contracts listed above.
  • Micro: 500 bushels for Micro Corn, Micro SRW Wheat, and Micro Soybeans.

When comparing two symbols, start with the size designation rather than assuming that a similar-looking price represents a similar dollar position. A 0.25-cent move multiplied by 5,000 bushels and the same move multiplied by 500 bushels cannot have the same contract-level result.

What “expiration” means in CME grain contracts

Traders often use “expiration” to mean several different milestones. For an agricultural futures contract, distinguish at least the last trading date from the last delivery date. They are not interchangeable, and the rule for one product should not be copied to another.

Corn last trading date

For CME corn, trading terminates on the business day before the 15th day of the contract month. The corn fact card states the rule as the business day before the 15th calendar day. Because the rule uses a business day, weekends and exchange holidays can change the date that appears on the official calendar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Corn last delivery date

CME’s corn fact card lists the last delivery date as the second business day following the last trading day of the delivery month. That is a separate milestone from the final trading session. A reader who asks when a corn contract “expires” therefore needs to specify whether they mean the end of trading or the end of the delivery timetable.

These are corn terms. Do not apply the corn dates to soybeans, Chicago wheat, KC wheat, soybean oil, soybean meal, rough rice, or another agricultural contract without checking that product’s current specification and contract-year calendar.

How to find the official date for a specific symbol

  1. Identify the exact product. Confirm whether the symbol is corn, soybeans, wheat, or another agricultural contract, and whether it is standard, mini, or micro.
  2. Decode the delivery month and year. Use the exchange or vendor symbol convention, then verify that the resulting month and year match the contract page.
  3. Open the current product specification. Use the applicable CME contract page, not a generic month-code chart or an old screenshot.
  4. Read the last trading field. Record the exchange’s stated rule or date for that exact delivery month and year.
  5. Read the delivery field separately. If the contract has a delivery timetable, note its last delivery date and any related milestones instead of treating it as the trading cutoff.
  6. Check business-day adjustments. Review weekends and exchange holidays in the relevant calendar. A formula based only on the numerical day of the month can produce the wrong date.
  7. Save the source and date you checked. Contract schedules, available months, and other terms can change, so retain the current exchange page used for the decision.

  1. Symbol: ZC identifies CME corn. The following month code identifies the delivery month, and the final year indicator identifies the contract year under that platform’s convention.
  2. Unit: corn is quoted in cents per bushel, so do not read the displayed number as $502 per bushel. Confirm how the platform renders the fractional portion.
  3. Size: if the symbol is the standard corn contract, apply 5,000 bushels. If it is a mini or micro symbol, use that product’s stated quantity instead.
  4. Tick: for standard corn, one 0.25-cent move equals $12.50 per contract. The same arithmetic cannot be transferred to a smaller contract without checking its tick specification.
  5. Dates: open the current corn calendar for the decoded delivery month and year. Use the business-day-before-the-15th rule for last trading, then read the separate last-delivery field.

The example demonstrates why a ticker, displayed price, contract size, and date must be read together. A symbol alone does not tell you the dollar value of a move, and a delivery-month letter alone does not tell you the final trading session.

Seven attributes to compare before treating two contracts as equivalent

Use the following checklist whenever you compare agricultural futures contracts or switch from one contract size to another:

  • Underlying commodity and deliverable grade: confirm exactly what the contract represents, including the grade or type where the specification defines one.
  • Contract quantity and unit: determine whether the multiplier is bushels, pounds, short tons, or another measure.
  • Quotation unit: verify whether the price is quoted in cents per bushel, dollars, or another unit.
  • Minimum tick and tick value: record both the smallest price movement and its dollar effect for one contract.
  • Listed delivery months: make sure the month shown by the symbol is actually listed for that product and contract year.
  • Last trading date: identify when trading terminates under the exchange’s business-day rule.
  • Settlement or delivery method: read the current specification rather than inferring treatment from a similar commodity.

CME exposes these fields on its corn specification page. CME’s wheat futures and options handbook also cautions that official exchange rules supersede an educational summary. Use handbooks to understand terminology, but use the current contract rules for an actual date or contract decision.

Common reading errors and how to correct them

Reading cents as dollars

Error: treating a corn quote such as 502'0 as $502 per bushel.
Correction: confirm the quote-unit field, interpret the vendor’s fraction convention, and convert cents to dollars only after the notation is established.

Using the wrong quantity multiplier

Error: multiplying every grain quote by 5,000, including a mini, micro, soybean-oil, or soybean-meal contract.
Correction: open the exact product and size specification. Standard benchmark grains use 5,000 bushels, mini contracts listed above use 1,000, and the named micro grain contracts use 500; other products use different units.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming the month code is the expiration date

Error: treating the month letter or the last calendar day of that month as the final trading session.
Correction: use the exchange’s last-trading field. For corn, the rule is the business day before the 15th calendar day, not the end of the month.

Confusing last trading with last delivery

Error: recording one date and calling it both expiration and delivery.
Correction: write the two milestones separately. CME’s corn terms place the last delivery date on the second business day following the last trading day of the delivery month.

Applying corn dates to every agricultural contract

Error: copying corn’s business-day rule to soybeans or wheat.
Correction: read the exact product’s current contract specification and contract-year calendar.

Relying on an old fact card or vendor label

Error: assuming a historical PDF, charting label, or symbol format is still authoritative.
Correction: use the current CME specification and calendar. Fact cards and educational pages are useful summaries, but official exchange rules control when the terms differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring delivery exposure

Error: focusing only on the quote and tick while overlooking the contract’s delivery timetable.
Correction: check the settlement or delivery method and the relevant dates before holding a position toward the end of its life.

A practical quote-reading worksheet

For each symbol, record these fields before comparing prices or calculating a position:

  1. Displayed symbol: copy it exactly as shown by the platform.
  2. Exchange product: write the full commodity name and identify whether the contract is standard, mini, or micro.
  3. Delivery month and year: decode them using the platform’s convention and verify against the exchange calendar.
  4. Quote unit: record the unit exactly, such as cents per bushel.
  5. Displayed price: preserve the vendor’s fractional notation before converting it.
  6. Contract quantity: enter the multiplier and unit, such as 5,000 bushels.
  7. Minimum tick: record the price increment and calculate its dollar value for one contract.
  8. Last trading date: copy the official date or rule for that contract year.
  9. Last delivery date: record it as a separate field where the specification provides one.
  10. Settlement or delivery method: confirm the current rule instead of inferring it from a related product.

This worksheet prevents the most expensive category errors: a unit mismatch, an incorrect contract multiplier, or a date calculated from the month code without checking business-day adjustments.

Which source should control?

Use the current CME contract-specification page for the exact product and the applicable CME or CBOT rulebook for binding terms. CME’s educational pages and fact cards are valuable for learning the structure of a contract, but they are summaries. The wheat education material expressly states that official exchange rules supersede its summary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quote values, market activity, available contract months, and expiration schedules are changeable. A page that correctly described one contract year does not guarantee the same date or listing for another. Always verify the product, size, delivery month, and year together.

Bottom line

A reliable CME agricultural-futures reading starts with the symbol, continues through the quote unit and contract multiplier, and ends with the official calendar. For standard corn, that means a 5,000-bushel contract, a 0.25-cent-per-bushel minimum fluctuation worth $12.50 per contract, and a last-trading rule tied to the business day before the 15th of the contract month. Treat those figures as corn specifications only, and verify every other product and contract year on its current exchange page.
