There is no single Brian K. Vaughan reading order. His best-known comics belong to separate series, publishers and continuities. Start with the first issue or first collected volume of the work that matches your interests, then read that title’s issues or books in numerical order. You do not need to read Saga before Paper Girls, and there is no crossover chronology connecting either series to Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways or Pride of Baghdad.
The most convenient one-volume completed story is Paper Girls: The Complete Story. For a long completed series, begin with Y: The Last Man Book One. Choose the Ex Machina complete-series omnibus if you want one collected run. Choose Saga if you want an ongoing series and are comfortable following new numbered issues and collections.
What “in order” means for Vaughan’s comics
Readers usually mean one of two things when they ask for an order. The first is order within a series: start at issue #1 or the first numbered book and continue through the next issue or volume. The second is Vaughan’s publication chronology: read his major works by the year each began. The first approach is supported by the way the books are published and catalogued. The second can be a fun way to survey his career, but it is an optional route rather than a required continuity.

The quick-start order
| Work | Start here | How to continue | What the format tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saga | Issue #1 or the first numbered collected edition | Follow issue or volume numbers in sequence | Image catalogs it as an ongoing series; the catalog included issue #72 dated March 19, 2025, along with later trades |
| Y: The Last Man | Book One | Read the numbered books in order, or use an omnibus | Book One collects issues #1–10 |
| Paper Girls | The first issue, first volume, or The Complete Story | Continue through the collected volumes or read the complete-story trade straight through | The complete-story trade is 784 pages and was published November 2, 2021 |
| Ex Machina | The first volume | Continue by volume number or use the complete-series omnibus | A complete-series omnibus is listed by DC and Penguin Random House |
| Pride of Baghdad | The opening page | Read it as a single graphic novel | It is a standalone work |
| Runaways | The beginning of Vaughan’s run | Use that run’s publication or collection sequence | It is a longer series in a shared universe, not part of the continuity of the creator-owned works above |
1. Read Saga in issue or collection order
Where to begin
Start with Saga issue #1. If you prefer books, choose the first numbered collected edition rather than jumping to a later trade, compendium or deluxe hardcover. Every later collection assumes that the story has been read from its beginning.
How to follow the series
Continue with each subsequent issue number, or move through the collected editions in their numbered order. Image’s catalog presents Saga as a series by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, with numbered issues and several collected formats. At the time represented by the catalog, it included Saga #72, dated March 19, 2025, and later numbered trades.
That cataloging matters: Saga should not be described as a finished story simply because a particular trade ends. The publication record continues beyond earlier collections, so a reader buying books should check the highest numbered volume currently available and expect the collected publication to continue.
Which edition fits which reader?
- Single issues: Best if you want the release-by-release experience and do not mind managing many individual comics.
- Standard trades: A practical way to read several issues at a time while keeping the numbered sequence visible.
- Compendium: Useful when you want a large quantity of the series in fewer books.
- Deluxe editions: Suitable for readers who prioritize a premium collected format over light weight and portability.
These formats change presentation and convenience, not the required reading order. Begin with the earliest numbered material whichever format you choose.
2. Read Y: The Last Man from Book One
The precise starting point
Y: The Last Man Book One is the clearest entry point for a new reader. DC states that this book collects issues #1–10, giving you the opening arc in one purchase rather than requiring a search for individual issues.

Continuing through the series
After Book One, proceed through the numbered books in sequence. Do not skip to a deluxe edition because its cover design or page count looks different; confirm that it begins with the next issues after the material you have already read. Readers who want fewer, larger books can select the omnibus instead and read from its beginning.
DC’s catalog lists the other numbered books as well as deluxe editions and an omnibus. Those are alternate containers for the same broad reading path. A numbered-book run is easier to track on a shelf, while an omnibus consolidates more of the story in a heavier volume.
Why this is a good first Vaughan series
The complete-series structure makes Y: The Last Man a straightforward commitment: begin with the first ten issues in Book One, then keep moving forward through the numbered books or the consolidated omnibus. You do not need background from Saga, Runaways or any other Vaughan title.
3. Read Paper Girls from the beginning—or in one complete book
The simplest one-volume route
If you want a finished story without assembling several trades, choose Paper Girls: The Complete Story. The publisher listing identifies it as a 784-page trade paperback, published November 2, 2021, with ISBN 9781534319998. It is written by Brian K. Vaughan, with art by Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson.
Serial and volume-by-volume routes
You can also start with the first issue or first collected volume and continue through the volumes in order. The complete-story trade does not create a different continuity; it simply puts the series into one physical book. If you already own individual trades, read them from the lowest volume number upward and do not insert unrelated Vaughan titles between them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo you need to read Saga first?
No. Paper Girls and Saga are separate series. Their creators, settings and publication lines are distinct, so either can be your first Vaughan comic. Choose Paper Girls when a single completed collection is more important to you than following an ongoing publication.

4. Read Ex Machina by volume or with the complete-series omnibus
Starting order
Begin with the first Ex Machina volume. Continue to the next numbered volume until you reach the end of the series. Starting halfway through the run can obscure the setup and character relationships that the opening volume establishes.
One-book alternative
DC and Penguin Random House list Ex Machina: The Complete Series Omnibus. It is the appropriate choice if your priority is owning the entire collected run in a single purchase. Read it from the first page rather than treating the omnibus as a reference volume to dip into out of order.
Volume numbering and the omnibus are two packaging options for the same basic sequence. Retailer listings can change, so verify the edition’s contents before buying if you are replacing books you already own.

5. Read Pride of Baghdad as a standalone graphic novel
Pride of Baghdad does not require a preceding Vaughan series. It is a standalone graphic novel, so its internal order is simply the order of its pages. You can read it before or after any of the serialized works without creating a continuity problem.
Its standalone status makes it useful for readers who want to sample Vaughan’s writing without committing to a multi-volume series. Finishing it does not unlock a required prologue for Saga, Y: The Last Man, Paper Girls or Ex Machina.
6. Read Runaways in its own publication sequence
Where to start
For Vaughan’s contribution to Runaways, begin at the start of his run and follow the issue or collection sequence used for that run. Because the title belongs to a larger shared-superhero universe, edition names and collected volumes may be organized differently from creator-owned series.

How it relates to the other books
Runaways should not be inserted between Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina as though all six works occupied one timeline. Its continuity is its own. You may read Vaughan’s Runaways material before or after his Image books; the choice affects only your sampling route, not the story logic of those other series.
An optional publication-oriented sampler
Some readers want to see how Vaughan’s projects vary rather than devote their first months to one long series. A useful sampler is:
- Start with Y: The Last Man Book One for an early long-form entry point.
- Sample the opening volume of Ex Machina.
- Read Pride of Baghdad as a complete standalone.
- Try the first collection of Saga.
- Finish the sampler with Paper Girls: The Complete Story.
This order is an editorial itinerary, not a canonical chronology. It lets you compare a completed long series, a political science-fiction premise, a standalone graphic novel, an ongoing space-fantasy series and a completed time-travel story without implying that one title supplies required context for another.
Choosing between single issues, trades, hardcovers and omnibuses
The correct format depends on how you read, store and revisit comics. The catalogs establish that several Vaughan works are available in more than one collected form, but prices and stock vary by retailer and change over time.
| Format | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single issues | Readers who want the original serialized rhythm | Clear issue numbering and incremental purchases | More items to store and track |
| Standard trade paperback | Most first-time readers | Several issues in a portable, manageable book | You may need multiple volumes for a long series |
| Deluxe hardcover | Collectors and rereaders | Premium binding and a substantial shelf format | Heavier and less convenient to carry |
| Compendium | Readers who want a large portion of an ongoing series | Fewer books for a substantial amount of story | Large and heavy compared with a standard trade |
| Omnibus | Readers who want a consolidated complete run | Can place an entire series or major run in one volume | Weight and handling can make long reading sessions less comfortable |
| Complete-story trade | Readers seeking one finished volume | One-book route through a completed series | Large page count; less portable than smaller trades |
For a first purchase, use the table’s reading objective rather than assuming the most expensive format is the best one. Numbered trades are easier to replace or lend individually; a complete collection reduces the chance of losing your place between volumes; single issues preserve the original installment experience.

“I want one finished book.”
Choose Paper Girls: The Complete Story. Its 784-page format puts the complete series in one trade paperback, so there is no second volume to locate before you can finish the story.

“I want a long completed series with an obvious first step.”
Choose Y: The Last Man Book One. The first ten issues are identified on the book’s contents, and the remaining numbered books provide a visible path forward.
“I want the whole collected run at once.”
Choose the Ex Machina: The Complete Series Omnibus if its size suits your reading space and handling preferences.
“I want to follow a series that is still being collected.”
Choose Saga. Start at issue #1 or the first numbered trade, then follow the latest issue or collection available. Its catalog status means you should not expect the collected publication to represent a finished overall story.

Common ordering mistakes and how to avoid them
- Inventing a single Vaughan universe: Treat each title as its own reading project unless the title itself is part of a shared universe.
- Starting with a later trade: Check the volume number and begin with the lowest number available.
- Confusing an omnibus with a new story: An omnibus is a collected format; it does not change the series’ internal order.
- Assuming every series is complete: Saga continues to be catalogued with numbered issues and collections, so distinguish a finished individual arc or trade from the status of the whole series.
- Using a publication sampler as a rule: A cross-title route is for exploring an author’s range, not for unlocking continuity between unrelated works.
- Buying by retailer title alone: Confirm the contents, issue range and edition type, because publisher catalogs list multiple formats and retailers may display them differently.
A simple checklist before you buy
- Decide whether you want a standalone, a completed series or an ongoing series.
- Choose your starting work: Pride of Baghdad, Paper Girls, Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Saga or Runaways.
- Confirm that the edition begins with issue #1, the first volume or the opening of the named run.
- For a collection, check whether it is a standard trade, complete-story trade, compendium, deluxe edition or omnibus.
- Write down the next issue or volume number before putting the book away; this prevents accidental jumps between formats.
- Check the publisher’s current listing for availability, contents and publication status, since catalogs and retailer stock can change.
The direct answer
Read each Vaughan series from its own beginning, not in one cross-title chronology. Start Saga at issue #1, Y: The Last Man with Book One, Paper Girls with its first volume or The Complete Story, and Ex Machina with volume one or its complete-series omnibus. Read Pride of Baghdad independently, and follow Runaways in the order of Vaughan’s run. If you want to sample his career, use a publication-oriented sequence only as a personal itinerary.
