Read Bitcoin options metrics as a set, not as isolated forecasts. Open interest (OI) tells you where positions remain open; implied volatility (IV) shows how expensively the market is pricing future movement under a stated model and contract; and max pain is a conditional expiry calculation based on current OI. None of the three, by itself, predicts Bitcoin’s next price or proves that traders are bullish or bearish.
The useful workflow is to align the venue, underlying instrument, expiry, strike or delta, option side, units, timestamp and calculation method before comparing any chart. A disciplined reading separates what the data directly measures from the assumptions needed to interpret it.
What each Bitcoin options metric actually measures
Open interest is a position inventory, not trading activity
Open interest is the total size of positions that are still open for an option or group of options. It is counted after opening and closing trades are matched. Trading volume, by contrast, counts contracts traded during a period even when those positions are closed before the period ends. A large volume bar can therefore leave little lasting OI, while a quiet market can retain substantial OI.
On an options dashboard, OI is normally broken down by expiry and strike, with calls and puts shown separately. Check the unit before interpreting the number: a display may use contracts, units of the underlying or dollar notional. Deribit’s metrics documentation describes views that show both contract totals and dollar notional, so two screens can show different-looking OI figures for the same positions without either being wrong.

OI does not identify who is net long or net short. Every open option has a buyer and a seller, and an aggregate call-OI bar does not reveal whether institutions bought calls, overwrote a spot position, or combined the options with futures. Nor does OI alone establish an ability or intention to move Bitcoin’s spot price.
OI is also a snapshot. A trader can close, roll or hedge a position after your chart loads. If you are comparing two snapshots, preserve both timestamps and note whether the exchange reports a delayed, end-of-day or live figure. A change in OI is more informative when paired with volume and price, but even that combination does not identify the exact strategy behind the trades.
Implied volatility is a price-derived expectation, not a realized forecast
Implied volatility is the volatility input that makes an option-pricing model reproduce the option’s observed price, after accounting for factors such as strike, time to expiry, rates and the underlying price. It is therefore a statement about the price of optionality under a defined contract and model, not a guarantee of the volatility Bitcoin will realize.
Two IV numbers are comparable only when their basis is aligned. Record the venue, underlying instrument, expiry or tenor, strike or delta, and whether the quote is a call or a put. A 30-day constant-maturity index is not interchangeable with the IV of one strike expiring in 12 days. A quote from an options-on-futures contract can also differ from a quote on a spot-linked contract because the underlying, carry and settlement rules differ.
IV is not the same as realized volatility. It is inferred from the option premium and can include compensation for liquidity, hedging costs and demand for a particular payoff. A high IV can mean that protection is expensive, that the strike is difficult to hedge, or that the market expects larger moves; the number alone cannot distinguish those explanations.
Max pain is a conditional expiry calculation
Max pain is the candidate expiry price at which option buyers, in aggregate, would receive the least intrinsic value from the current open positions. For each possible settlement price, calculate the intrinsic value of every call and put represented in the OI snapshot, add those values, and select the price with the smallest total.
Deribit defines it as “a calculation that shows at what price level option holders (buyers) would as a whole suffer the maximum amount of financial pain.” The result changes whenever OI changes and must be scoped to one expiry. It is not a promised destination for Bitcoin, evidence of manipulation, or a settlement forecast.

Read open interest by expiry and strike
Start with one expiry
- Select a single expiration date and note the exchange’s settlement time and underlying contract.
- Display call and put OI across strikes. Keep calls and puts in separate series; combining them hides the shape of positioning.
- Mark the current underlying price on the strike chart. Strikes above spot are generally out-of-the-money calls and below spot are generally out-of-the-money puts, although moneyness changes as Bitcoin moves.
- Write down the unit shown—contracts, underlying units or dollar notional—and the data timestamp.
A tall OI cluster means many positions remain open at those strikes. It does not tell you whether those positions will be held to expiry, rolled, hedged elsewhere or closed tomorrow. Read clusters as areas where future hedging and trading interest may be concentrated, not as automatic support or resistance.
Look at the width of a cluster as well as its tallest bar. OI spread across several nearby strikes can represent a broad risk-management zone, whereas one isolated strike may be a single structured trade or reporting artifact. Check whether the chart includes every listed strike or only the most active contracts; a truncated view can make concentration appear larger than it is.

Compare expiries without mixing maturities
Repeat the same inspection for the next expiry, then for longer-dated contracts. A strike with large OI in a weekly option is a different exposure from the same strike in a quarterly option because the time available for hedging and the option’s sensitivity are different. Keep each expiry’s OI in its own row or chart rather than adding values that use different settlement dates.
Recommended Free Tools
When a dashboard offers an “all expiries” total, use it as a high-level inventory measure only. It cannot answer whether exposure is concentrated in near-term gamma-sensitive options or in long-dated positions with more time value. For a max-pain calculation, never use an all-expiry total: choose one expiry and use the strikes listed for that settlement.
Use notional carefully
Contract counts can exaggerate the apparent importance of low-value options and understate the size of high-priced Bitcoin exposure. Dollar-notional OI gives a different ranking because it incorporates the underlying price and contract multiplier. When comparing dashboards, confirm that both use the same multiplier and currency. If one source does not state its unit, label the figure as “unit not stated” rather than treating it as dollars.
For a reproducible comparison, record the conversion explicitly. For example, note whether one contract represents a fixed amount of Bitcoin, whether the display uses the current underlying price, and whether notional is quoted in U.S. dollars. Do not convert contract counts using a multiplier borrowed from another venue; that can create a larger error than the market move you are trying to analyze.
How to compare implied volatility and skew
Apply a fixed comparison record
For every IV observation, capture these fields:
- Venue and instrument: spot-linked Bitcoin options and options on Bitcoin futures are not the same product.
- Expiry or tenor: state the date and remaining time, or identify a constant-maturity benchmark.
- Strike or delta: a 25-delta quote is not a spot-strike quote; delta itself changes with price and time.
- Option side: call and put IV can differ materially at the same maturity.
- Data basis: live order-book prices, exchange settlement values, or a derived curve.
- Timestamp: quote time, trading date and timezone when available.
Only after these fields match should you compare a number with another number. A higher IV can reflect a nearer expiry, a different strike, a less liquid market or a different settlement methodology rather than a new market-wide fear signal.

Wide bid-ask spreads can make a midpoint unstable, especially at strikes with little trading. If a provider smooths a curve, the displayed line may be easier to read than raw quotes but less directly tied to an executable price.
Understand 25-delta risk reversal
A risk reversal expresses relative call and put IV. CME’s convention for a 25-delta risk reversal is:
25-delta risk reversal = 25-delta call IV − 25-delta put IV
Under that convention, a negative value means the put IV is higher than the call IV. That describes the relative price of downside protection; it does not prove that Bitcoin will fall. Always verify the sign convention because some platforms reverse the subtraction.

Keep the delta and expiry attached to the label. “Negative skew” without a maturity or delta can hide whether the difference belongs to a short-dated crash-protection market or a long-dated tail-risk market. A risk reversal also compares two option prices; it does not reveal the absolute level of either IV unless both legs are reported.

Distinguish a volatility index from an option quote
CME’s Bitcoin Volatility Index (BVX) is described as a once-per-second, 30-day constant-maturity measure built from Bitcoin and Micro Bitcoin options order-book data. BVXS is a daily-settlement measure. These benchmarks summarize a defined tenor and methodology; they are not the IV of every listed strike.
CME’s QuikVol FAQ says its derived curves use CME settlement and SPAN data. When OI is low or absent for an expiry, the displayed curve may be linearly interpolated from expiries with actual derived curves. Treat an interpolated point as a modelled estimate, not a direct tradeable quote, and inspect the provider’s methodology before comparing it with live order-book IV.
QuikVol data is a commercial service that CME says can be purchased, and Bitcoin option curves are available through QuikStrike. Access, pricing and partner terms can change, so identify the service and verify current availability before relying on it for production monitoring. A paid curve can add consistency and history, but it does not remove the need to record tenor, timestamp and methodology.

CME Group’s February 24, 2026 analysis reported 25-delta Bitcoin IV of 75% for calls and 95% for puts on February 5, 2026. The same analysis cited a 46% average put IV for 2025. The figures illustrate how to describe a put premium relative to calls and to a prior-period average, but neither number is a current market reading.
Using CME’s stated convention, the February 5 difference would be a negative 20 percentage points (75% minus 95%). That arithmetic describes the relative quote at that date; it does not measure a guaranteed 20-point future volatility gap, and it should not be carried forward after the expiry, venue or market regime changes.
That CME analysis also showed a March 2026 expiry OI snapshot dated February 13, 2026: approximately $660 million of calls versus $240 million of puts, or about 3:1. The ratio may indicate positioning consistent with a recovery thesis, but aggregate OI cannot reveal each participant’s complete strategy, hedge or net direction. It is also tied to that March expiry and the stated date, not to every Bitcoin option outstanding.
Keep the date attached whenever you quote a historical statistic. CME’s CVOL methodology version 1.7, dated December 8, 2025, describes broad volatility-index weights based on dollar-vega OI and current-day IV calculations using OI and vega inputs from the most recent five prior end-of-day files. That methodology detail matters when comparing an index with a dashboard that uses a different lookback or weighting rule.

Calculate and interpret max pain
Manual calculation
- Choose one expiry and export or record the call and put OI at every listed strike.
- Choose a grid of candidate settlement prices covering the relevant strike range.
- For each candidate price
S, calculate call intrinsic value asmax(S − K, 0)and put intrinsic value asmax(K − S, 0), whereKis the strike. - Multiply each intrinsic value by the corresponding OI and contract multiplier.
- Add all call and put values for that candidate price.
- Repeat across the grid. The price with the smallest aggregate value is the max-pain estimate for that OI snapshot.
The calculation uses intrinsic value at expiry, not the options’ current time value. It therefore says what the payoff distribution would look like if the current OI stayed unchanged until settlement.
Use the venue’s actual settlement convention when selecting the candidate range. An exchange that settles options against a reference rate may not use the same final price as a dashboard that simply samples a spot index. Preserve the strike increment and multiplier in your worksheet so a second person can reproduce the result rather than relying on a rounded chart label.
What the result can and cannot tell you
- It can tell you: where the current OI distribution produces the lowest aggregate intrinsic payout to option buyers under the stated assumptions.
- It cannot tell you: the future spot price, the final settlement price, the intentions of market makers, or whether positions will remain open.
- It changes when: traders add, close or roll positions; Bitcoin moves and alters hedging; strikes are added; or the data source updates its OI.
Deribit’s educational Python article describes retrieving option OI through an API and calculating max pain for a selected expiry. If you automate the process, store the retrieval timestamp, expiry, strikes, contract multipliers and the exact OI fields used so another calculation can be reproduced. Save the underlying data rather than only the resulting max-pain number; otherwise a later OI revision cannot be diagnosed.

Venue, settlement and methodology differences
Do not combine metrics from different venues as if they describe one homogeneous market. Confirm whether the underlying is spot-linked Bitcoin or an option on a Bitcoin futures contract, and whether the venue uses a different contract multiplier, quote currency or settlement index.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCME’s Bitcoin futures-options FAQ says daily out-of-the-money settlements are determined by CME staff using market activity and implied-volatility skews together with futures settlement. In-the-money options are settled using put-call parity with cost of carry, and final settlement is based on the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate. Those rules can produce IV and settlement values that are not directly comparable with an options venue using another index or settlement process.
The same discipline applies to publication frequency. BVX is described as updating once per second, while BVXS is a daily settlement measure. An end-of-day OI file, a live order-book quote and a smoothed curve can all be accurate within their own definitions while showing different conditions. Label the definition instead of choosing one number as universally “right.”
A repeatable dashboard-reading routine
- Identify the instrument. Record venue, underlying, contract type, multiplier and quote currency.
- Fix the horizon. Select one expiry for OI and max pain; for IV, state the expiry or constant tenor.
- Normalize the option point. Match strike or delta and call versus put. For skew, document the risk-reversal sign convention.
- Normalize units. Convert contract counts to notional only when the multiplier and currency are known.
- Check the data source. Mark live order-book, exchange-settlement, derived or interpolated values.
- Timestamp the observation. Save the date and time, especially when comparing a chart with a historical article.
- Read the three metrics together. Use OI to locate exposure, IV and skew to describe option pricing, and max pain to summarize a conditional payoff calculation.
- Write a qualified conclusion. State what the data supports and what remains unknown, rather than converting one metric into a directional prediction.
For a quick audit, ask three questions before publishing a note: “Could another reader identify the exact expiry?”, “Could they tell whether the number is contracts or dollars?”, and “Could they reproduce the calculation from the timestamped inputs?” If any answer is no, the comparison needs more labels, not a stronger conclusion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common interpretation errors and fixes
“The biggest OI strike is a price target.”
Fix: call it an exposure concentration. OI does not reveal net direction, hedges or whether contracts will survive to expiry.
“Put IV above call IV guarantees a crash.”
Fix: describe the relative cost of downside protection and include the expiry, delta, venue and sign convention. A risk reversal is a pricing relationship, not a forecast.
“Max pain is where market makers will force Bitcoin.”
Fix: present it as the minimum aggregate intrinsic payout under a frozen-OI scenario. No cited source establishes that it predicts eventual settlement or that market makers can force a particular price.
“A volatility index is the market’s single IV.”
Fix: identify its tenor, input contracts, publication frequency and methodology. BVX’s 30-day constant maturity, for example, is a defined benchmark rather than a quote for every expiry.
“A chart number is current because the page is online.”
Fix: read the timestamp and source. The CME February 2026 figures are historical snapshots and must not be presented as live values.
“A 3:1 call-to-put OI ratio proves traders are bullish.”
Fix: report the expiry, date and units, then state that OI records both sides of open contracts. Calls may be bought, sold or used in spreads, and related futures or spot hedges may change the directional exposure.

How to report an options snapshot clearly
A concise but complete note can follow this pattern:
- Instrument and source: venue, underlying and whether the data is live, settled or derived.
- Time: observation timestamp and expiry date.
- OI: call and put values by strike, with units.
- IV: strike or delta, call/put side and tenor.
- Skew: formula and sign convention for any risk reversal.
- Max pain: calculated price, expiry and OI snapshot used.
- Limit: one sentence stating that the metrics describe positioning and pricing conditions, not a guaranteed Bitcoin direction.
This format prevents the most damaging comparison errors: mixing maturities, confusing contracts with dollars, treating interpolated curves as trades, and quoting old figures as current. It also gives readers enough information to distinguish a live observation from a historical example.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is open interest the same as Bitcoin options volume?
No. Volume counts contracts traded during a period, including trades that are later closed. Open interest counts positions that remain open. A high-volume session can leave little OI, while older positions can leave substantial OI after a quiet session.
Does a large call open-interest bar mean traders expect Bitcoin to rise?
Not necessarily. Each open option has a buyer and a seller, and calls can be bought, sold, overwritten or combined with futures and spot hedges. OI shows outstanding positions, not the complete net direction or strategy.
What does negative 25-delta risk reversal mean?
Under CME’s convention, risk reversal equals 25-delta call IV minus 25-delta put IV. A negative value means put IV is higher, indicating relatively more expensive downside protection. It is a pricing relationship, not proof that Bitcoin will fall.
Can I compare a 30-day Bitcoin volatility index with a single option’s IV?
Only with care. BVX is a once-per-second, 30-day constant-maturity benchmark built from Bitcoin and Micro Bitcoin options order-book data, while a single option has its own expiry, strike and side. Match tenor, venue and methodology before drawing a comparison.
How often should max pain be recalculated?
Recalculate whenever the OI snapshot changes and always record the retrieval time. New positions, closures, rolls, added strikes and updated exchange data can all change the result. It must be calculated separately for each expiry.
Does max pain predict where Bitcoin will settle?
No. It is the candidate price that minimizes aggregate intrinsic value owed to option buyers if the current OI stays unchanged until expiry. It does not establish future spot price, market-maker intent or final settlement.
Why can two dashboards show different OI totals?
They may use contracts, underlying units or dollar notional; different contract multipliers or currencies; different venues; or different timestamps. Deribit documents displays that include both contract totals and dollar notional, so unit labels are essential.
What is QuikVol useful for?
CME says QuikVol provides derived volatility curves using CME settlement and SPAN data, with interpolation when OI is low or absent for an expiry. It can support consistent analysis, but interpolated points are modelled estimates rather than direct tradeable quotes, and access is a commercial matter to verify with CME.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: OI maps outstanding exposure, IV and risk reversal describe the relative price of optionality, and max pain summarizes a frozen-OI expiry calculation. Align venue, contract, expiry, strike or delta, units, timestamp and methodology before comparing them. Use the metrics to explain positioning and pricing conditions—not to manufacture a Bitcoin price target.
