Read the three fields as different measurements: frequency identifies the radio energy being observed, signal strength describes the received level under stated instrument settings, and bearing shows the direction from which the wave arrived. A bearing is normally a line of bearing, not a distance or an emitter position. A high signal-strength value can support a stable bearing, but it cannot by itself prove that the aircraft is close to the transmitter.
Reliable interpretation requires the frequency, occupied bandwidth, noise level, antenna configuration, aircraft heading, detector settings and observation time to be considered together. The procedure below shows how to turn a display into a defensible direction finding (DF) observation and when to treat it as uncertain.
The three readings answer different questions
| Display field | Question it answers | What it does not establish | What to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bearing | From which direction did the received wave arrive relative to the selected reference? | It does not provide range, altitude or a unique transmitter position. One bearing is a line extending from the aircraft. | Reference (aircraft heading, selected axis or north), value, time, aircraft position and confidence. |
| Frequency | Which RF energy is tuned or measured? | A frequency value alone does not identify the wanted emission when adjacent or co-channel signals are present. | Center frequency, occupied bandwidth, modulation or identification, receiver bandwidth and any drift. |
| Signal strength | How much received level or field strength reaches the detector under the current setup? | It is not a direct distance measurement and cannot be compared fairly when settings or antenna conditions change. | Value, units, detector, analysis bandwidth, antenna selection, aircraft attitude, noise level and position. |
The FAA describes a DF receiver as producing a strobe indication that gives a “Line of Bearing (LOB) from the aircraft to the transmission source.” That wording is important: the display supplies direction to follow or intersect, not a range ring.
How to interpret the bearing number
Identify the reference frame first
A bearing may be displayed as a relative angle from the aircraft nose, as a value referenced to a selected aircraft axis, or as a north-referenced azimuth. A number such as 045° therefore has no meaning until you know which frame the instrument uses. A relative bearing of 045° on an aircraft heading of 270° corresponds to a north-referenced direction of 315° (270 + 45, wrapped into the 0–359° range). Apply the display’s documented convention rather than assuming that every arrow is magnetic or true north.

Record the aircraft heading and the reference with every observation. During a turn, the same transmitter can produce a rapidly changing relative number even though its geographic direction has not changed.
Read it as a line, not a point
The bearing indicates the direction of arrival at the antenna. Extend that direction away from the aircraft to form a line of bearing. The transmitter could be anywhere along the line, subject to terrain, propagation and antenna errors. A single airborne observation cannot tell you whether the source is one kilometre or 100 kilometres away.
Understand loop nulls and the 180-degree ambiguity
In a manually rotated loop antenna, response changes as the loop turns. The minimum, or null, is sharper than the maximum and is used for the direction measurement. The UK Central Flying School manual states: “To take a manual loop bearing, the loop is rotated until a minimum signal (or ‘null’) is found.” A simple loop responds similarly to signals arriving from opposite sides, so it cannot by itself distinguish the forward direction from the reciprocal direction. A sense antenna or equivalent processing resolves that 180-degree ambiguity.
Electronic arrays still need calibration
Fixed-array, Doppler and interferometer systems calculate angle of arrival electronically, but the displayed arrow is still a system result. Antenna phase and amplitude calibration, aircraft installation, airframe shadowing and the propagation environment all affect the answer. Treat the stated angular accuracy as conditional on the test method and operating conditions, not as a guarantee for every flight.
Read frequency together with bandwidth
Confirm that the displayed frequency is the signal of interest
The center frequency is the tuned or measured midpoint of the observed RF energy. Before using its bearing, verify the emission by listening, decoding or checking a known identifier when possible. Then inspect the spectrum around the reported channel. A nearby signal inside the receiver passband can produce a plausible-looking level and bearing while actually being the interferer.

Choose a bandwidth that matches the emission
Use the narrowest bandwidth that passes the wanted modulation and accommodates expected frequency drift. A bandwidth that is too wide admits adjacent energy and raises the noise floor. One that is too narrow clips modulation, suppresses sidebands or causes an intermittent signal to vanish. FAA interference-search guidance specifically warns that an overly narrow DF receiver setting can reduce effectiveness and recommends spectrum analysis to determine the center frequency and effective bandwidth.
Bandwidth must be documented with the frequency. A frequency reading without bandwidth cannot show what energy was included in the measurement.

Search for an unknown interferer
- Start with the affected or reported channel and note its nominal center frequency and receiver passband.
- Sweep above and below that channel with a spectrum analyzer or a receiver configured for a sufficiently wide search.
- Record every candidate peak’s center frequency, occupied bandwidth and time behavior.
- Compare each candidate with the victim receiver’s passband and modulation. A signal outside the nominal channel can still enter through filtering or overload.
- Tune slightly above and below the affected facility frequency. FAA procedures note that a peak in received strength during this adjustment can help identify the direction toward the interference source.
What signal strength means—and why it is not distance
Interpret the unit and detector
Signal strength is a received level or field-strength estimate produced by a particular detector, antenna and calibration. It may be shown in receiver-level units or as field strength such as dB(µV/m). ITU-R SM.2125 requires field-sensitivity results to state the analysis bandwidth, modulation and SINAD conditions; those conditions materially change the number.
Use the value primarily to determine whether the signal is above the noise floor and to compare observations made with the same setup. A value from one bandwidth, detector or antenna path is not directly comparable with a value obtained after changing those settings.
Why a strong signal may not be nearby
Transmitter power and antenna gain, aircraft attitude, polarization mismatch, airframe shadowing, terrain, reflections, multipath and propagation can all change received level. A reflected path can create a local maximum away from the emitter. A co-channel transmission can dominate the detector. Conversely, a nearby source can read weak when the aircraft structure blocks the antenna or the polarizations are poorly aligned.

A stronger, clean signal generally gives the DF processor more information and tends to produce a steadier bearing. It still cannot prove proximity or correct identity.

1. Identify the emission
Verify the tuned frequency, inspect nearby spectrum and, when possible, listen for or decode the station or emission identity. FAA AIP guidance says NDB/ADF identification should be monitored because disturbances can create erroneous bearings. An unidentified signal should be labelled provisional in the flight log.
2. Establish the signal-to-noise condition
Note the displayed units, detector and bandwidth, then compare the signal with the local noise floor. A level barely above noise is normally less stable than a clean signal with clear margin. Do not infer confidence from the absolute number without its settings.
3. Convert and record the bearing
Write down the bearing, reference frame, aircraft heading, position, altitude and UTC time. Convert a relative value to the required true or magnetic frame only after confirming the instrument’s convention. Mark whether the indication is a loop null, an electronically calculated angle or an arrow whose processing mode is not known.
4. Test stability
Hold a steady heading and repeat the observation. Then make a controlled heading change and observe whether the converted geographic bearing remains reasonably consistent. Record the spread, dropouts and any dependence on yaw or bank. A broad spread, sudden jumps or loss of signal lowers confidence even when the level is high.

5. Obtain geometry before claiming a location
Follow the line of bearing operationally only when the identity and confidence checks support it. To estimate a position, take bearings from separated aircraft positions or combine the airborne line with another independently measured line. Intersections that meet at a shallow angle produce poor location accuracy; widely separated, well-crossing lines are more useful. ITU guidance also describes single-site location for some HF cases when azimuth, elevation and propagation information are available, but that is not a general substitute for multi-point geometry.
When a bearing is trustworthy
Evidence that raises confidence
- The emission is positively identified and remains present while the observation is repeated.
- The signal has clear margin above noise with documented bandwidth and detector settings.
- The bearing is stable on a steady heading and remains consistent after a controlled heading change.
- Independent antenna channels or a second observation produce compatible directions.
- The result agrees with expected propagation and does not depend on a single aircraft attitude.
Evidence that lowers confidence
- The needle or arrow swings as the aircraft yaws, banks or changes antenna selection.
- The signal disappears when bandwidth is widened or narrowed, suggesting an adjacent or intermittent source.
- Station identification is noisy, absent or inconsistent with the modulation being heard.
- Two strong peaks occupy nearby frequencies and the displayed direction changes between them.
- The bearing is steady but the spectrum shows voice, music or another unwanted modulation that could create a false indication.
Known ADF and DF error sources
FAA AIP material warns that lightning, precipitation static and nighttime interference can produce erroneous ADF bearings. ITU lists signal strength, signal-to-noise ratio, interference, antenna configuration, receiver channels, site and aircraft environment, integration time, propagation and polarization among the factors affecting bearing accuracy. A steady display is therefore not sufficient evidence if the emission identity or propagation path is suspect.
Localizing an emitter from bearings
Triangulation with separated observations
Plot each line of bearing from the aircraft’s recorded position and reference frame. Two or more lines that intersect within their uncertainty bands provide an estimated source area. Use the actual angular spread, not a single ideal line, when drawing the area. If the lines are nearly parallel, the intersection is highly sensitive to small bearing errors and the result should remain broad.
Single-site methods are specialized
Some HF systems combine azimuth, elevation and propagation models to estimate a source from one site. Such a result depends on the model and ionospheric conditions. It should not be treated as equivalent to ordinary VHF or UHF line-of-bearing triangulation.

NDB frequency ranges
U.S. FAA guidance normally places nondirectional beacon (NDB) facilities in the 190–535 kHz band. The ICAO range cited in the same guidance is 190–1750 kHz. These are guidance ranges for the referenced aviation services, not a universal limit for every RF-surveillance installation.
The historical three-degree requirement
An FAA national ADF standard from 1987, reproduced in the cited technical material, specified that indicated bearing for 190–535 kHz equipment should not differ from the signal’s direction of arrival by more than 3°. That is a historical equipment requirement under its defined conditions; it is not a promise that every modern airborne surveillance system achieves 3° in every environment.
No universal range or strength threshold
There is no single current accuracy, maximum range or signal-strength threshold that applies to all airborne RF-surveillance installations. ITU measurement guidance requires accuracy and sensitivity to be established for the particular system, antenna, frequency, bandwidth, integration and propagation conditions.

Troubleshooting common display problems
| Symptom | Likely explanations | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Bearing jumps while level is high | Multipath, co-channel energy, aircraft attitude changes or competing peaks. | Hold heading, inspect the spectrum, switch or compare antenna channels and repeat after a controlled heading change. |
| Bearing is exactly opposite the expected direction | Unresolved loop ambiguity, incorrect sense processing or a reference-frame conversion error. | Check sense-antenna status, confirm heading datum and test the reciprocal direction before acting. |
| Signal vanishes with a narrow filter | Bandwidth is clipping modulation, the source is drifting or the signal is intermittent. | Widen the filter enough to contain the emission, measure occupied bandwidth and retune to its center. |
| Strong level but no stable direction | Reflected or co-channel signal, polarization mismatch between paths or processor overload. | Compare modulation and spectrum, change aircraft geometry if safe and record the result as low confidence until repeated. |
| Erratic ADF indication near storms or at night | Lightning, precipitation static or nighttime interference. | Monitor identification, cross-check with another observation and avoid treating the indication as a confirmed source line. |
| Different readings after changing settings | Detector, bandwidth, integration time or antenna path changed the measurement. | Restore a common setup before comparing values and document every setting change. |
What to put in the flight or investigation log
- UTC date and time, aircraft position, altitude, heading, track and attitude.
- Frequency, center-frequency uncertainty, occupied bandwidth and modulation or identifier.
- Bearing value, reference frame, reciprocal or ambiguity status and the spread across repeats.
- Signal-strength value, units, detector, analysis bandwidth, integration time and estimated noise floor.
- Antenna selection, receiver channel, calibration state and any aircraft-installation limitations.
- Weather, terrain, suspected reflections, nearby transmitters and interference symptoms.
- Whether the result is a single line of bearing, a triangulated area or a specialized modeled location.
Keeping these fields together prevents a strong but misleading level from being mistaken for a close source, and prevents a precise-looking arrow from being treated as a geographic fix without supporting geometry.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Frequency tells you which RF energy is being measured; bandwidth tells you what additional energy may be inside the measurement.
- Signal strength is a conditional received-level measurement. It helps judge signal margin and repeatability but does not directly provide distance.
- Bearing is the direction of arrival relative to a stated reference. One bearing is a line, not a position.
- Null-based loop DF has a 180-degree ambiguity until sense information resolves it.
- Confidence depends on identification, signal-to-noise ratio, antenna and aircraft installation, calibration, propagation, reflections, interference and integration time.
- Use two or more separated, independently checked bearings to estimate an emitter location; otherwise report a line of bearing with its uncertainty.
