Read an Arctic sea-ice map in three passes: identify the product and date, decode the concentration legend, then distinguish concentration from the 15% threshold used to calculate extent. Colors describe the fraction of each grid cell covered by ice—not thickness, age, or melt-pond depth. The orange reference line marks the 1981–2010 median ice edge, while the gray circle at the pole is missing satellite data rather than open water.
What an Arctic sea-ice concentration map shows
A concentration map divides the ocean into regular grid cells and estimates how much of each cell is covered by sea ice. The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) describes a typical cell as 25.0 km by 25.0 km, or 625.0 km². A cell labeled 0% contains no detected ice; a cell labeled 100% is entirely ice-covered. Intermediate values represent fractional coverage within that cell.
That percentage is a two-dimensional coverage measurement. It does not tell you how thick the ice is, how old it is, whether snow covers it, or how much melt water sits on top. Those properties require separate observations and products.
Read the legend before interpreting the picture
The color bar is the key to every visual judgment. On NSIDC Sea Ice Today and Charctic concentration maps, the scale runs from 0 percent, shown as dark blue, to 100 percent, shown as white. Other products can use different colors or class breaks, so never transfer a color interpretation from one map to another without checking its own legend.

A pale shade does not automatically mean “thin ice,” and a dark shade does not necessarily mean “old ice.” They indicate less or more areal coverage in the cell according to that product’s algorithm.
Concentration, area, and extent are different quantities
These terms are often used interchangeably in casual coverage, but they answer different questions.

How a single cell contributes to area and extent
Consider one 625.0 km² cell. If its concentration is 40%, its estimated ice area contribution is 250.0 km² (0.40 × 625.0 km²). Under a 15% extent rule, that same cell is included in extent and contributes the full 625.0 km². A cell at 10% would contribute 62.5 km² to area but would not count toward extent under that rule.

Extent applies the threshold first and then adds the full physical area of every cell that passes. Consequently, extent can remain high even when many qualifying cells contain only a modest amount of ice.
What the 15% ice threshold means
The NSIDC Sea Ice Index labels a grid cell “ice-covered” when its measured concentration is greater than 15 percent. The threshold turns a continuous concentration field into a simpler boundary for a time series and a map edge. It is a classification rule, not a claim that the rest of the cell is solid ice.

When a chart reports extent, it is measuring ocean area in cells with at least the chosen concentration level. When you inspect a concentration map, you are seeing the underlying percentages from which that thresholded extent can be calculated. A small shift in low-concentration cells near the edge can therefore change extent without a dramatic change in the map’s high-concentration interior.
How to interpret the orange median line
On NSIDC Sea Ice Today and Charctic maps, the orange line represents the median ice edge for the same calendar date during 1981–2010. In half of those reference years, the mapped extent was smaller than the median; in the other half, it was larger.
The line is a statistical reference, not a literal boundary in today’s concentration field. Present-day cells can contain any value from 0% to 100% near the line, depending on the product and local conditions. Use the line to describe whether the current edge is generally farther toward or away from the pole than the historical median, not to assign a precise concentration to a pixel.
Check that the comparison is like-for-like
- Match the calendar date, hemisphere, and map projection.
- Confirm that the current map and the reference line use the same product and processing convention.
- Read the legend and threshold; a line based on 15% cannot be compared directly with an edge defined at another percentage.
- Describe the result as a difference from the 1981–2010 median, not as a comparison with an undefined “normal.”
Why there is a gray hole at the North Pole
The dark gray circle near the North Pole is a historical satellite-coverage gap caused by orbital geometry. It is missing data, not evidence of open water and not a low-concentration reading. Do not count that region as blue ocean when describing the map.
Some products also use a mustard or yellow color for other missing-data areas. Treat every such color according to the product’s legend. If a missing-data region falls along an apparent edge, qualify the interpretation rather than drawing a continuous boundary through it.

What the extent graph is measuring
An NSIDC extent graph summarizes the total area of ocean cells meeting the 15% ice-concentration criterion. It is derived from the concentration data, but it is not a display of every percentage inside every cell.

Use the concentration map for spatial distribution: where the ice is continuous, where low-concentration patches occur, and which coastlines or seas are involved. A graph can show a similar total extent on two dates even when the ice is arranged very differently.
How satellites estimate concentration
Passive-microwave satellite sensors distinguish sea ice from liquid water by measuring their different microwave emissions. Processing algorithms convert those observations into concentration estimates on a grid. NSIDC distributes NASA Team and Bootstrap concentration products, and NASA provides enhanced NASA Team daily maps.
Different sensors, algorithms, calibration choices, and treatments of weather or surface conditions can produce slightly different values. That is why a responsible comparison records the product name and keeps the processing method constant whenever possible. A visible change between two maps may reflect real ice movement, a product change, or both.
A repeatable workflow for reading any Arctic map
- Identify the map. Read the title, hemisphere, date or date range, publisher, and product name. Note whether it is a daily image, a multi-day composite, a concentration field, or an extent graphic.
- Decode the color bar. Confirm that colors represent percentage concentration and record the numeric breaks. Check whether the scale runs continuously from 0% to 100% or uses classes.
- Find the extent rule. If an extent edge is overlaid, verify the concentration threshold. For the NSIDC Sea Ice Index, the rule is 15%.
- Locate the comparison baseline. On NSIDC Sea Ice Today and Charctic products, establish that the orange line is the 1981–2010 median for the same date.
- Mark missing data. Identify the polar hole and any other gray, mustard, yellow, or otherwise flagged regions before describing an opening or edge.
- Read spatial patterns. Trace high-concentration interiors, lower-concentration margins, leads, and isolated patches by their percentages rather than by color names alone.
- Choose the right summary. Use the map to explain distribution; use the extent graph to explain total thresholded coverage and timing.
- Record your comparison. Write down the product, date, hemisphere, legend, threshold, reference period, and missing-data convention so another reader can reproduce the interpretation.
How to compare today’s map with an average
Start by matching the date and product. A map from one algorithm compared with a map from another can show differences caused by processing rather than ice conditions. Sensor or algorithm changes can affect apparent differences even when the underlying ocean state is similar.

Next, compare the current edge with the 1981–2010 median line only after confirming the date. Then inspect the concentration colors inside and outside that edge. An edge displaced from the median may be accompanied by broad low-concentration areas, a narrow band of scattered cells, or a compact high-concentration boundary; those patterns have different physical interpretations even if the total displacement looks similar.
When describing a result, state the evidence in layers: the current product’s concentration pattern, the thresholded extent relationship, and the position relative to the historical median. Avoid compressing all three into a single claim such as “the ice is at the average,” which does not specify whether you mean area, extent, or the location of an edge.
What satellite maps cannot tell you by themselves
- Thickness: Concentration is coverage within a cell, not the vertical thickness of the ice.
- Age: A 100% cell can contain first-year or multiyear ice; concentration alone does not identify age.
- Melt ponds: Surface melt ponds can affect observations, but a concentration color is not a melt-pond measurement.
- Small-scale structure: A 25.0 km grid cell averages conditions over 625.0 km², so narrow leads and individual floes may not be resolved.
- Perfect certainty at the edge: Microwave retrievals and thresholding provide estimates. Low-concentration fringe cells should not be described as a sharp physical wall.
Common reading mistakes and their fixes
Calling every white area “thick ice”
White denotes the high end of the concentration scale on the specified map. It says that most or all of the cell is classified as ice-covered, not how thick that ice is. Consult a separate thickness product for thickness.
Treating extent as the amount of ice in the ocean
Extent counts whole qualifying cells. To discuss the amount of ice-covered surface more directly, use area, which sums each cell’s fractional coverage. Keep the two terms separate in captions and explanations.
Reading the orange line as today’s coastline
The line is the 1981–2010 median edge. Compare its position with the current concentration pattern, but do not use it as a literal present-day boundary.

Interpreting the polar hole as open water
Gray at the pole indicates a historical coverage gap. It is not a 0% concentration reading and must be excluded from statements about open ocean.
Comparing different products without noting the change
NASA Team, Bootstrap, enhanced NASA Team, and other products can use different processing. Record the product and keep it fixed for a date-to-date comparison, or explicitly qualify the comparison if you must switch.
Assuming all ice charts use the same legend
NOAA’s National Ice Center publishes daily and weekly Arctic ice charts that graphically represent ice conditions and recent extent change. Their conventions may differ from NSIDC concentration maps. Read the National Ice Center chart’s own legend and definitions before comparing it with an NSIDC image.
Using NOAA National Ice Center charts alongside concentration maps
National Ice Center daily and weekly charts are useful for operational views of ice conditions and recent extent change. They are not automatically interchangeable with an NSIDC concentration map: symbols, color classes, edge definitions, and aggregation periods can differ.
For a combined explanation, identify which chart supplies which evidence. Use an NSIDC concentration map when you need the percentage within grid cells and the 15% extent convention. Use a National Ice Center chart when its daily or weekly depiction provides the operational pattern you are describing. Quote the chart date and legend rather than translating its colors into NSIDC percentages.
A compact checklist for captions and reports
- Product and publisher identified
- Date and hemisphere stated
- Color legend read and concentration units given
- Grid-cell scale noted when spatial detail matters
- Area versus extent named explicitly
- 15% threshold stated when discussing NSIDC extent
- 1981–2010 median identified when using the orange line
- Polar hole and other missing-data colors checked
- Sensor or algorithm changes disclosed in date comparisons
- No claims about thickness, age, or melt ponds inferred from concentration alone
Putting the interpretation together
A precise reading might say: “On this dated NSIDC concentration map, the legend shows percentages from 0% to 100%. The current low-concentration margin lies generally inside the orange 1981–2010 median edge in the named region. Extent is calculated separately by counting cells above the 15% threshold, while the gray circle at the pole is missing data.” That wording tells readers what was measured, what was compared, and what was not observed.
The essential discipline is to keep the map’s continuous percentages, the area sum, and the thresholded extent in separate mental columns. Once the legend, threshold, baseline, and missing-data colors are documented, the map becomes a reproducible measurement rather than a visual impression.
