The colors in a Hubble, Webb, or other telescope image are usually a coded visualization, not a literal photograph of what human eyes would see. Telescopes record separate grayscale exposures through filters. Image processors combine those layers and assign visible hues to them, sometimes translating infrared or ultraviolet data into colors we can see. Start with the image caption and color key: they tell you exactly which filter produced each displayed color.
What the colors in an astronomical image actually mean
A finished space image normally combines several detector exposures. Each exposure records intensity, not color, in a particular wavelength range selected by an optical filter. The detector data are commonly grayscale. During processing, the grayscale layers are aligned, adjusted and assigned visible colors before being combined into one image.
That means a red area can represent data collected in infrared light, while a blue area can represent a shorter-wavelength exposure. The displayed hue identifies the processing choice for that layer; it does not automatically identify the color a person would see through a telescope eyepiece. NASA’s Hubble FAQ addresses the question “Are the colors real?” with this distinction: the colors are real as assigned display colors, but they may represent wavelengths outside human vision or emphasize scientific features.
Read every image on its own terms. A red layer in one composite may come from a long-wavelength infrared filter, while red in another may come from visible light. The caption’s filter key, not a general rule about astronomical colors, is the authority.

Begin with the caption, key and image metadata
Before interpreting a bright knot, a blue shell or a red galaxy, identify what the image is and how it was made. Captions often contain more interpretive information than the picture itself.
Identify the target and observatory
Note the object shown, the observatory or observatories involved, and the instrument. Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), and Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) do not collect identical data. An image combining Hubble and Webb layers is not equivalent to an image from either telescope alone.
Find the filter-to-color key
Look for a legend listing filter names beside colors. Treat each entry as an explicit data mapping. If the key says a filter is blue, that means the processor displayed that filter’s grayscale exposure with blue values. It does not mean the source emitted ordinary blue light.
Check orientation and scale
Compass arrows indicate sky direction when supplied. A north arrow and an east arrow establish orientation, which can differ from the orientation of a familiar star chart. A scale bar indicates an angular or physical size when the caption provides one. Neither mark changes the filter interpretation, but both prevent mistakes about direction and the size of structures.
Read processing notes and credits
Captions may state whether the image uses visible, near-infrared or mid-infrared data; whether a color combines several filters; and who processed the image. Processing notes are part of the image’s meaning, not an afterthought.
What a filter does
A filter selects part of the spectrum
Light from an astronomical object spans a range of wavelengths. A telescope filter transmits a selected interval and blocks or reduces other wavelengths. Separate exposures through different filters therefore measure different portions of the same scene.

Some filters cover relatively broad wavelength ranges. Others are narrow enough to isolate a spectral feature, such as emission from hydrogen. The filter name and instrument determine what the exposure measures; the same-looking label should not be assumed to have identical behavior on another observatory.
Visible, infrared and ultraviolet data
Human vision covers only a limited part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Hubble can collect visible light as well as ultraviolet and near-infrared data. Webb is designed primarily for infrared observations. Infrared photons are invisible to our eyes, so processors translate their measured intensities into visible hues for display.
An infrared layer shown in red remains infrared data. Changing its screen color does not change the wavelength captured by the detector. The assignment simply gives viewers a way to distinguish that layer from other measurements.
Broad-band and narrow-band layers
A broad-band filter samples a wider interval and can capture continuum light from stars, dust and galaxies. A narrow-band filter targets a smaller interval, often around a particular emission line. In a composite, one displayed color may therefore trace a specific physical feature while another summarizes light over a broad range.
How separate exposures become a full-color composite
The detector starts with grayscale measurements
Each filter exposure produces an intensity map. Pixel values record how much signal the detector measured at each location after calibration. A single grayscale exposure can be scientifically useful, but it does not contain the red, green and blue channels of an ordinary consumer camera.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Processors align and combine the layers
Images taken through different filters must be registered so that stars and other structures line up. The processor then assigns each layer a display color and combines the layers. When several filters are assigned to the same color group, their data may be combined before or during the color composition.

Chromatic ordering is common, not mandatory
Webb image teams often use a wavelength-ordered scheme: shorter wavelengths trend toward blue and longer wavelengths toward red. Joe DePasquale, a NASA image processor, describes this practice as “chromatic ordering to the data” in the NASA podcast Gravity Assist: How We Make Webb (and Hubble) Images. The approach helps viewers perceive a progression through the spectrum.
It is not a universal law. Processors can reassign filters to make a faint feature visible, separate overlapping structures, or support a particular scientific explanation. The key for that individual image overrides any expectation that blue always means the shortest wavelength or red always means the longest.
Stretching reveals faint signal
Raw Webb exposures can look nearly black because astronomical scenes contain a wide range of intensities and most pixels are faint. A tonal stretch or rescaling expands the visible range so subtle structures appear on screen. Stretching improves visibility, but screen brightness is not then a simple, linear measure of physical brightness. Two regions that look equally bright may not have equal measured intensity, and two images stretched differently should not be compared by eye alone.

Processing teams inspect detector artifacts and may correct or remove them. Alignment, cosmic-ray treatment, bad-pixel handling and other cleanup can affect the finished presentation. These steps do not make the image “fake”; they produce a readable representation of calibrated observations. They do mean the published composite is processed data rather than an untouched snapshot.
A step-by-step method for reading any space image
- Read the caption. Identify the object, observatory, instrument, observation context and image credits.
- Locate the color key. Write down every filter and the visible hue assigned to it. Do not infer a mapping from another image of the same object.
- Determine the wavelength regime. Note whether each layer samples visible, ultraviolet, near-infrared, mid-infrared or another part of the spectrum. If the caption supplies a wavelength range, keep that qualification with the filter name.
- Separate broad and narrow filters. A narrow-band entry may isolate an emission feature, while a broad-band entry may include many sources of light. Do not treat their colors as measurements of the same physical quantity.
- Check whether a displayed color combines filters. Some keys group several filters under one color. In that case, the color represents a combination, not one detector exposure.
- Read the processing note. Look for stretching, rescaling, artifact correction, alignment or other stated operations. These determine how intensities appear.
- Interpret color comparatively within that image. Ask which structures are stronger in one filter relative to another. Avoid converting a screen hue directly into a claim about what the human eye would see.
- Use the compass and scale bar. Establish north, east and the represented size before describing the location or extent of a feature.
Worked example: Webb’s HUDF MIRI image
NASA’s Webb image of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) made with MIRI provides a clean example of explicit filter mapping. The key assigns five MIRI filters to five displayed colors:
| Filter | Displayed color |
|---|---|
| F182M | Blue |
| F210M | Cyan |
| F430M | Green |
| F460M | Orange |
| F480M | Red |
Every layer is MIRI data, but the filters sample different infrared intervals. The blue pixels are not visible blue light; they are the F182M measurement rendered blue. The red pixels are not necessarily visible red light; they are the F480M measurement rendered red. The five-color sequence helps viewers distinguish the layers and follows a wavelength progression for this presentation.

The HUDF example also shows why the caption matters even when a palette looks intuitive. A reader who assumes that red means visible hydrogen emission would be assigning a meaning not stated by this key.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWorked example: M82 in Hubble and Webb data
NASA’s M82 comparison demonstrates that two observatories can portray the same galaxy with different filter sets and different color logic.
Hubble ACS composite
The Hubble ACS image assigns F435W to blue, F555W to green, F658N to red-orange and F814W to red. Three of these filters sample broad wavelength ranges. F658N is a narrow filter that isolates hydrogen emission. In this composite, the red-orange layer therefore highlights a specific hydrogen-related feature, while the other layers provide broader spectral context.
Webb NIRCam composite
The Webb version maps F164N to blue, F250W to green and F335M to red. Those are different filters on a different instrument, so a red region in the Webb image is not directly equivalent to a red region in the Hubble image.
Place the two keys side by side before comparing structures. Differences in apparent color can arise from wavelength coverage, filter width, detector sensitivity and processing choices, not from a change in the galaxy itself.

When reading WR 124, ask two separate questions: which filters belong to each color group, and which of those filters are narrow or broad? A blue shell, for example, is evidence that the combined blue-assigned layers are strong there; it is not automatically evidence for one wavelength or one chemical element.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Worked example: MACS 0416 and a multi-observatory palette
NASA’s MACS 0416 compass image combines Hubble and Webb observations. The caption describes visible and near-infrared wavelengths translated into colors and lists assignments spanning red, orange, yellow, green, cyan and blue.
This broad palette illustrates a practical rule: a composite can include more than the three familiar red, green and blue channels. Additional hues can encode additional filters, allowing a reader to distinguish several wavelength ranges at once. The exact meaning of each hue still comes from the image-specific key.
How to compare two images of the same object
Side-by-side comparisons are useful only after their measurement and processing contexts are established. Use the following axes rather than comparing apparent colors alone.
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Observatory and instrument | Which telescope and detector made each layer? | Different instruments have different wavelength coverage and sensitivities. |
| Wavelength coverage | Are the data visible, ultraviolet, near-infrared or mid-infrared? | Invisible wavelengths can be displayed as visible colors. |
| Filter names and passbands | Which filters were used, and are they broad or narrow? | A narrow filter may isolate a feature that a broad filter includes with other light. |
| Filter-to-color mapping | Which hue represents each filter or filter group? | The same hue can encode different measurements in different images. |
| Color purpose | Is the palette chromatically ordered or chosen to emphasize a feature? | Color assignment can support either spectral progression or visual/scientific separation. |
| Processing | Were the layers stretched, rescaled, aligned or cleaned? | Display intensity depends on processing as well as the measured signal. |
| Orientation and scale | Are compass arrows and a scale bar provided? | They establish direction and the angular or physical size represented. |
Only after answering these questions should you describe a feature as brighter, bluer or redder between images. Even then, phrase the comparison in terms of the filters: a structure is stronger in one filter or filter group relative to another, rather than simply “more red.”
What brightness and color can—and cannot—tell you
Relative strength within a processed image
Color can reveal where one assigned layer contributes more strongly than another. A green region in a three-layer composite indicates a stronger contribution from the green-assigned data than from neighboring layers, subject to the stretch and combination method.
Not a direct thermometer or chemical label
A displayed hue alone does not prove a temperature, element, distance or composition. Those interpretations require the relevant filters, calibration, models and scientific analysis. A narrow-band layer may be associated with a known emission feature, but the color is still a display encoding of that measurement.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Not a literal visual portrait
Human eyes cannot see infrared. A Webb image translated from infrared therefore cannot be the view an astronaut would have with unaided vision. Even a visible-light composite may use a palette, contrast stretch and filter combination unlike a natural-color camera.
Common mistakes and the precise correction
- Mistake: “False color is arbitrary.” Correction: Many teams order colors by wavelength, and the key documents the mapping. The assignment may still be adjusted for scientific or compositional reasons.
- Mistake: “Every image uses blue for short wavelengths and red for long wavelengths.” Correction: Wavelength ordering is common, not guaranteed. Trust the individual key.
- Mistake: “A red pixel is visible red light.” Correction: The pixel may represent infrared or another invisible band assigned red for display.
- Mistake: “The published picture is an untouched photograph.” Correction: It may include alignment, intensity stretching, rescaling and artifact correction.
- Mistake: “The brightest screen color is physically the brightest region.” Correction: Display stretches can change how intensity differences appear; compare measured layers only within the stated processing context.
- Mistake: “Two red regions in different images represent the same thing.” Correction: Compare their instruments, filters, passbands and keys first.
- Mistake: “A color identifies one filter automatically.” Correction: Some composites combine several filters under one displayed color.
- Mistake: “Orientation is obvious from the picture.” Correction: Use the supplied north/east arrows. Published images can be rotated for layout.

The practical verdict
To read an astronomical image correctly, treat it as a labeled visualization of measurements. Start with the caption, copy the filter-to-color mapping, identify the wavelength regime and note the processing. Then use color to compare the layers encoded in that particular composite—not to assume what the scene would look like to human eyes. Once you follow the key, an apparently mysterious rainbow becomes a map of how the object emits, absorbs or scatters light across the spectrum.
