The reliable way to read a Japanese company’s quarterly earnings report is to treat it as a sequence of checks: find the authoritative TDnet filing, identify the period, accounting basis and reporting scope, extract the standardized figures, then use segment, cash-flow, balance-sheet and note disclosures to explain them. Japanese reports often show both the three-month quarter and cumulative year-to-date results, and a report can be consolidated or parent-only and prepared under Japanese GAAP, IFRS or U.S. GAAP. If you compare the wrong column, scope or accounting basis, the resulting growth rate can be meaningless.

This guide gives you a repeatable workflow for reading a Japanese “kessan tanshin” (決算短信), checking an English version against the Japanese original, and judging whether reported profit is progressing toward the company’s own full-year forecast.

1. Find the authoritative filing on TDnet

Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE)-listed companies submit timely disclosures through the Japan Exchange Group’s (JPX) TDnet system. TDnet is the electronic channel used to submit disclosures, publish them through the public disclosure service, distribute them to media and retain them in searchable databases.

Use the company’s securities code or legal name when searching. Record the disclosure date shown by TDnet and download every relevant document attached to the release. The public timely-disclosure view keeps materials for 31 days, so save the original PDF, HTML page or data file if you need an audit trail later. JPX also describes longer-term listed-company search and paid database access.

Distinguish the report from related releases

A single announcement may include the quarterly earnings report, a correction, a supplementary presentation, a dividend revision or a forecast revision. Start with the document identified as the quarterly earnings report or “kessan tanshin.” If a later correction exists, use the corrected version and retain the original only to understand what changed. A presentation can explain management’s story, but it is not a substitute for the standardized filing.

Why there is no single Japanese template

JPX sample forms separate reports by accounting basis (Japanese GAAP, IFRS and U.S. GAAP), reporting scope (consolidated and non-consolidated), and period (first or third quarter versus the second-quarter interim report). Banks, insurers and other specified businesses use additional variants. Before copying a number, confirm that the form fits the company and quarter you are reading.

2. Read the identity block before any number

Make a short “identity record” at the top of your worksheet. It prevents the most common errors—mixing a quarter with nine-month results, or a parent-only statement with a group statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Company and securities code: confirm the legal issuer, not merely a brand or subsidiary name.
  • Fiscal year-end: Japanese companies do not all close their books in March, so the fiscal calendar matters.
  • Reporting period: note the exact wording, such as “three months ended” or “nine months ended,” and the ending date.
  • Disclosure date: use the date on the TDnet release, not the date printed in a later presentation.
  • Document status: mark it as an original, correction or supplementary material.
  • Scope: identify consolidated statements or non-consolidated (parent-only) statements.
  • Accounting basis: identify Japanese GAAP, IFRS or U.S. GAAP.

Do not calculate growth until all seven items are fixed. A nine-month cumulative figure is not a “third-quarter” figure in the same sense as a three-month result, and a consolidated group cannot be compared directly with a parent-only statement.

3. Identify the period and the columns

Japanese quarterly forms commonly place the current period, the same period in the prior fiscal year and a full-year forecast in the opening summary. The current-period section may contain both a three-month quarter and a cumulative year-to-date column. Read the column headings rather than assuming that the first number is the latest quarter.

Quarter versus year to date

Column What it measures Typical use
Three months ended Only the latest quarter Detect acceleration, deceleration or seasonality
Nine months ended (or other cumulative period) Total from the fiscal-year start through the quarter end Measure progress toward the full-year plan
Full-year forecast Management’s expected total for the fiscal year Calculate forecast progress and identify revisions
Same period prior year Comparable quarter or cumulative period from the prior fiscal year Calculate year-over-year change

For a company with a March year-end, a third-quarter report generally covers nine months, but the exact dates depend on the company’s fiscal year. Use the dates printed in the filing.

Use like-for-like comparisons

Compare three months with the same three months in the prior year, and nine months with the same nine months in the prior year. Do not compare a current nine-month total with a prior-year three-month quarter. If a fiscal-year change, business transfer or accounting-policy change breaks comparability, describe the break instead of presenting the result as ordinary growth.

4. Check consolidated versus non-consolidated and the accounting basis

Scope and accounting basis change what a line means. Consolidated statements include the reporting group and eliminate intra-group transactions; non-consolidated statements cover the parent company alone. A parent-only profit can rise while the group’s result falls, or the reverse.

Japanese GAAP, IFRS and U.S. GAAP can differ in revenue recognition, operating-profit presentation, treatment of extraordinary or unusual items, segment measures and balance-sheet classification. “Ordinary profit” is a familiar Japanese GAAP subtotal, but it may not appear in an IFRS or U.S. GAAP report. Never insert a missing subtotal or treat differently defined measures as identical.

Check Question to ask Consequence if ignored
Scope Is this consolidated or parent-only? Revenue, profit, assets and debt may represent different economic groups.
Basis Japanese GAAP, IFRS or U.S. GAAP? Recognition and classification differences can distort peer or period comparisons.
Period Three months or cumulative year to date? Growth and forecast-progress percentages become invalid.
Restatement Was the prior period recast or the report corrected? The apparent change may reflect presentation rather than performance.

When a company changes accounting basis or reporting scope, identify the transition date and use the company’s disclosed restated comparative figures where available. If no comparable figure is supplied, label the comparison as limited.

5. Start with the standardized financial summary

The opening summary is the fastest way to establish what happened. Copy the company’s units—yen, thousands of yen, millions of yen or another stated scale—and preserve its rounding. Convert units only in a separate working column.

The core lines

  • Revenue (net sales): the top-line activity for the stated period.
  • Operating profit: profit from ordinary operating activities under the company’s basis.
  • Ordinary profit, when shown: a Japanese GAAP subtotal that generally incorporates non-operating income and expenses; it is not a universal IFRS or U.S. GAAP line.
  • Profit attributable to owners of parent: the earnings attributable to the parent’s shareholders after the interests of non-controlling shareholders are separated.
  • Basic earnings per share (EPS): profit attributable to owners divided by the applicable weighted-average share count, subject to the report’s stated basis and rounding.
  • Full-year forecast: management’s planned total for the fiscal year, not a guarantee.

Calculate the first-pass measures

For each line, calculate year-over-year change using the same period in the prior year:

Year-over-year change (%) = (current period − prior-year period) ÷ prior-year period × 100

For the cumulative column, calculate progress against the full-year forecast:

Forecast progress (%) = cumulative result ÷ full-year forecast × 100

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret progress with seasonality in mind. A 50% result after half the fiscal year is not automatically on track, and a 75% result after nine months is not automatically a beat; compare the company’s historical seasonal pattern and any assumptions disclosed in the report. Keep negative denominators, losses and zero values explicit instead of forcing a percentage that has no useful meaning.

Margins make growth comparable

Calculate operating margin and, where useful, net margin from the same scope and period:

Operating margin (%) = operating profit ÷ revenue × 100

A revenue increase with a falling operating margin signals a different issue from revenue growth accompanied by stable or rising margin. State whether the movement is quarter-only or cumulative.

6. Explain the result with qualitative information

After recording the totals, read the qualitative-information section. Its purpose is to explain the movement, not merely repeat it. Look for specific drivers and tie each one to the affected line or segment.

Revenue and margin drivers to look for

  • Price: list-price changes, discounts or surcharge recovery.
  • Volume: units sold, customer count, capacity utilization or traffic.
  • Mix: a shift toward higher- or lower-margin products, regions or channels.
  • Foreign exchange: translation effects and transaction exposure, including the company’s stated assumptions.
  • Input costs: materials, energy, logistics, labor or other cost inflation.
  • One-off items: gains, losses, restructuring charges, impairment or acquisition effects.
  • Timing: shipment timing, project milestones, seasonality or delayed orders.

Separate management’s reported cause from your inference. If the report says a margin changed because of product mix, do not add an unmentioned cause. If the explanation is broad, mark the driver as unquantified and use segment and cash-flow sections to test it.

7. Use segment information to locate the change

Segment tables show where group performance was created or lost. Read segment revenue and segment profit for the current and comparable periods, then check eliminations and unallocated costs. A group-level increase can hide a decline in the main business if a smaller segment or one-time item offsets it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A segment checklist

  1. Record each segment’s revenue and profit using the report’s stated units.
  2. Calculate year-over-year change for both, not revenue alone.
  3. Compare segment margin (segment profit divided by segment revenue) where the definitions are consistent.
  4. Read the narrative for price, volume, mix, foreign exchange and cost explanations.
  5. Check eliminations and corporate expenses before adding segment profits yourself.
  6. Note reorganizations, renamed segments or changed management measures that break the comparison.

Do not assume that segment profit equals consolidated operating profit. Segment measures may exclude items that appear at group level, and the report’s reconciliation controls the interpretation.

8. Test the quality of earnings with cash flow and the balance sheet

Profit is an accounting measure. Cash flow and the balance sheet show whether that profit is being collected, invested and financed.

Cash-flow statement

  • Operating cash flow: compare cash generated by operations with reported profit.
  • Working capital: inspect receivables, inventories, payables and contract balances. A large use of cash can explain why profit has not converted to cash.
  • Investing cash flow: identify capital expenditure, acquisitions, asset sales and other major investments.
  • Financing cash flow: track borrowing, debt repayment, dividends and share buybacks.

A temporary working-capital build is not automatically a problem, but it needs an explanation such as inventory preparation or timing. A large gain without operating-cash support deserves a note review, especially when the gain is non-recurring.

Balance sheet and notes

Check cash and cash equivalents, interest-bearing debt, inventories, trade receivables, provisions, goodwill or other intangible assets, and capital expenditure commitments. Then reconcile unusual changes to the notes and accounting-policy disclosures. Look for impairment, litigation provisions, disaster losses, acquisition accounting, pension changes and tax effects. The balance sheet can reveal risk before it appears in the income statement.

9. Test the full-year forecast and forward-looking risks

Place the cumulative result beside the full-year forecast for revenue, operating profit, ordinary profit when presented, profit attributable to owners of parent and EPS. Then read whether management has maintained, raised or lowered the forecast and whether the dividend or buyback plan changed.

Questions that prevent overconfidence

  • Does the cumulative result fit the company’s normal seasonal pattern?
  • Are the assumptions for exchange rates, commodity prices, demand, production or project timing stated?
  • Is the result dependent on a one-time gain or an unusually low cost?
  • Did management revise the forecast, or merely describe upside without changing it?
  • Are impairment, litigation, disaster, currency or supply-chain risks disclosed?

Forecasts are management assumptions, not promises. The cautionary language in the filing governs how much weight to give them. A company can be ahead of its plan after nine months yet still miss if the final quarter is seasonally weak or a disclosed risk materializes.

10. Use XBRL and HTML without losing the context

JPX provides XBRL data on TDnet for earnings reports and related disclosures. JPX also provides HTML data for earnings-report pages that include a quarterly accounting period beginning on or after April 1, 2024. These formats make extraction, spreadsheet checking and repeatable comparisons easier than retyping a PDF.

Use XBRL or HTML to locate facts, but retain the surrounding label, unit, period, scope and accounting basis. A machine-readable value without its context can still be the wrong quarter, a parent-only figure or a non-comparable measure. Verify unusual values against the displayed table and notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

JPX explains that statutory-disclosure XBRL can be downloaded through EDINET, while earnings-report data is available through JPX disclosure services. EDINET data and TDnet earnings data serve different disclosure purposes; choose the source that matches the document you are analyzing.

11. How to use an English version safely

JPX’s English Company Announcements Service publishes English full texts or excerpts and summaries supplied through TDnet. From April 2025, domestic companies listed on the Prime Market must disclose financial results and timely-disclosure information simultaneously in Japanese and English, although an English excerpt or summary is acceptable.

JPX’s financial-results FAQ states that English financial-results disclosure must be made via TDnet so overseas investors receive timely information. It also explains that an English version is a reference translation and need not receive the same audit or review treatment as the Japanese original. English publication can be later than the Japanese release.

A practical language workflow

  1. Open the Japanese TDnet filing and note its disclosure time and document status.
  2. Use the English document to orient yourself to the headings and management explanation.
  3. Match every important number to the Japanese table, XBRL fact or HTML table, including the unit and period.
  4. Check footnotes for forecast assumptions, scope, restatements, segment definitions and unusual items.
  5. When a translation is abbreviated or ambiguous, quote the Japanese label in your notes and explain the meaning rather than guessing.

For an investment decision, treat the Japanese filing as the controlling document. An English summary may omit a qualification that changes how a number should be interpreted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. A reusable worksheet and comparison framework

Create one row for each report and keep separate columns for three-month, cumulative and full-year figures. Include the disclosure date so later corrections or forecast revisions can be ordered correctly.

When comparing two companies, use the same six axes: accounting basis, reporting scope, time window, operating performance, cash and balance-sheet quality, and disclosure completeness and timing. If one company reports IFRS consolidated figures and the other Japanese GAAP parent-only figures, present the difference as a limitation rather than ranking the numbers directly.

13. Common reading mistakes and their fixes

Mistake: treating cumulative results as the latest quarter

Fix: read the column heading and period dates; calculate a quarter-only change only from a three-month column.

Mistake: mixing group and parent figures

Fix: put “consolidated” or “non-consolidated” in every worksheet heading and compare like with like.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming every report has ordinary profit

Fix: record only the subtotals the accounting basis actually presents.

Mistake: comparing a corrected filing with the original

Fix: use the latest corrected report and note the correction date and affected lines.

Mistake: calling a forecast a promise

Fix: quote the forecast as management’s current assumption and read its stated risks.

Mistake: relying on an English summary for a material footnote

Fix: cross-check the Japanese original, XBRL fact or HTML table whenever a number, qualification or assumption matters.

Mistake: treating a profit increase as automatically healthy

Fix: inspect segment support, operating cash conversion, working capital and one-off gains before drawing a conclusion.

14. A five-minute first pass and a full review

Five-minute first pass

  1. Confirm issuer, period end, disclosure date, scope and accounting basis.
  2. Copy revenue, operating profit, ordinary profit if shown, attributable profit and EPS for the current and prior-year periods.
  3. Copy the full-year forecast and calculate cumulative progress.
  4. Mark any forecast, dividend, buyback or correction change.
  5. Read the headline qualitative explanation and identify the largest stated driver.

Full review

  1. Recalculate margins and year-over-year changes from like-for-like columns.
  2. Map the change to segments, eliminations and management’s explanation.
  3. Read operating, investing and financing cash flow and working-capital movements.
  4. Inspect debt, cash, inventory, receivables, provisions and capital expenditure in the balance sheet and notes.
  5. Check accounting-policy changes, restatements, one-off items and risk disclosures.
  6. Cross-check material facts against the Japanese filing and machine-readable data.

The final written conclusion should state what changed, why management says it changed, whether cash and the balance sheet support the result, and how the cumulative outcome compares with the full-year plan. It should also state any comparability or translation limitation that could change the interpretation.
