Read a half-year report as an update to the company’s latest annual accounts, not as a miniature annual report. Compare the current half-year with the same period last year, compare the balance sheet with the latest year-end, and connect revenue and profit to debt, liquidity and cash generation. Then use the notes and management discussion to establish what actually changed and why.
The method below works for IFRS interim reports and is adaptable to other jurisdictions. Publication rules, terminology, assurance and filing deadlines vary by country, regulator and issuer, so confirm the reporting framework and the report’s own definitions before comparing figures.
What a half-year report is—and what it is not
A half-yearly (or interim) report covers a period shorter than a full financial year, usually six months. Under IAS 34, an IFRS reporter that states it complies with the standard may present either a complete or condensed interim set of financial statements. Minimum content includes condensed statements of financial position, comprehensive income, changes in equity and cash flows, selected explanatory notes and comparative information.

Local legislation, stock-exchange rules and regulators decide which entities must file, the format and the timetable. A US Form 10-Q, for example, follows US filing requirements rather than IAS 34. For a company listed elsewhere, use the equivalent official filing and the accounting framework named on the cover or in the notes.

An interim report updates the last annual statements. Unchanged annual-report material is normally not repeated. Instead, the notes focus on significant events and transactions since year-end. The same accounting policies used in the latest annual report should continue unless a change is disclosed. Because interim measurement uses year-to-date information and more estimates, an interim number can later be revised in the annual accounts.
Start with the report’s basis, periods and assurance
- Identify the framework and scope. Look for IFRS, US GAAP or another stated basis, and whether the statements are condensed. Check whether the report expressly says it complies with the applicable interim standard.
- Write down the dates. Record the six-month end date, the comparative prior-year half-year, and the latest year-end date. Note whether the company has a 52/53-week year or a non-calendar year.
- Check the assurance report. Determine whether an independent auditor performed a review, a full audit or no external assurance. A review is not an audit opinion; the exact wording and level of work depend on the issuer and jurisdiction.
- Find the management discussion. This section explains material changes from management’s perspective. Read it with the risk factors, accounting policies and notes rather than relying on the headline table.
These checks prevent a common error: treating every “half-year result” as if it were prepared under one global filing regime or as if a limited review provided the same assurance as an annual audit.
Use the right comparison for each statement
| What you are comparing | Correct comparison | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue, profit and margins | Current half-year versus the corresponding half-year last year; also current year-to-date versus prior-year year-to-date | It controls for much of the business’s normal seasonality. |
| Cash-flow totals | Current year-to-date cash flows versus the comparable prior-year period | Cash generation is a flow over time, not a closing balance. |
| Assets, debt and cash | Interim reporting date versus the latest financial year-end, with the prior interim date as an additional reference | The balance sheet is a point-in-time snapshot. |
| Reported versus adjusted results | Statutory figures versus each management-defined measure, including exclusions and reconciliation | “Underlying” or “adjusted” is not a single standardized measure. |
| Highly seasonal operations | Half-year comparisons plus a longer view, such as trailing twelve-month information when provided | A six-month period may capture a peak or trough that is not representative of a full cycle. |
Never compare a six-month income figure with a twelve-month figure or a closing debt balance with an average debt balance without stating the difference. If the company changes its year-end, restates a prior period or acquires a business, read the basis-of-comparison note before calculating growth.

Read management’s explanation before deciding what changed
After recording the numbers, read the management discussion and analysis. Use it to test possible drivers rather than accepting a single explanation. Look for quantified effects from:
- unit or customer volume;
- price changes and inflation recovery;
- product, geography or customer mix;
- acquisitions, disposals and newly consolidated entities;
- foreign-exchange translation;
- input costs, wages, freight and other operating expenses;
- timing, seasonality or unusual contract milestones; and
- risks that management says could affect the second half.
Revenue alone cannot establish which of these caused a change. A higher reported total may come from an acquisition or currency translation rather than stronger underlying demand. Conversely, flat revenue can conceal volume growth offset by lower prices or an adverse mix.
How to analyze revenue
1. Establish the absolute amount and like-for-like growth
Start with the revenue line in the income statement. Calculate the change against the matching prior-year half-year:
Revenue growth (%) = (current-period revenue − prior comparable revenue) ÷ prior comparable revenue × 100

Repeat the calculation for year-to-date figures if the report presents a separate quarter and cumulative column. Keep the numerator and denominator from the same accounting basis and continuing operations where the report has restated them.
2. Break the total into disclosed components
Check segment, geography, product and customer-category tables. IFRS 15 may require revenue disaggregation in the interim notes where applicable. A total that looks stable can hide a fast-growing segment and a declining one, while a large increase can be concentrated in one contract or acquired operation.
3. Test the stated cause
Match management’s explanation to the disclosures. If the report attributes growth to pricing, look for volume and price commentary. If it cites acquisitions, identify the acquisition date and the period for which the acquired revenue is included. If currency is material, distinguish constant-currency commentary from the reported figure.
4. Respect recognition timing
Revenue belongs in the period when the applicable recognition criteria are met. An expected sale, signed order or cash receipt does not automatically qualify as current-period revenue. Read contract-asset, contract-liability, receivables and subsequent-event notes when a large transaction appears near the reporting date.
Margins: define the numerator every time
A margin is a profit measure divided by revenue. Different margins answer different questions:
| Margin | Formula | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Gross profit margin | Gross profit ÷ revenue | Economics after directly attributable cost of sales, where the company presents a gross-profit subtotal. |
| Operating margin | Operating profit ÷ revenue | Profitability after operating expenses but before financing and tax, using the company’s defined operating-profit line. |
| Net margin | Profit attributable to the relevant owners ÷ revenue | What remains after finance costs, tax and other items; specify whether the numerator is total profit or profit attributable to owners. |
For every calculation, state the exact numerator and denominator. Compare the same definition across periods; do not compare an adjusted operating profit in one period with statutory operating profit in another.
Separate statutory and management-defined results
Companies may present “underlying,” “adjusted,” “core” or similarly named measures. Read the reconciliation to statutory profit and list every exclusion, such as restructuring, acquisition costs, impairment, fair-value movements or share-based compensation. Check whether the treatment is consistent with the prior period and whether the interim report explains the measure as required by the applicable framework.

There is no universal margin level that proves a company is healthy. A software business, supermarket and heavy manufacturer have different cost structures. Interpret a margin through the company’s own history, segment mix, stated strategy and cash conversion, not through a generic threshold.
Investigate a sudden margin move
- Separate price, volume and mix effects where disclosed.
- Look for temporary input-cost changes, one-off credits or provisions.
- Check whether an acquisition was consolidated for only part of the period.
- Read impairment, restructuring and fair-value notes.
- Compare the margin movement with operating cash flow; an accounting gain does not necessarily create cash.
Debt, cash and liquidity belong in one analysis
Read total borrowings together with cash and cash equivalents. Then split borrowings into current and non-current portions. A debt increase may result from new loans, lease liabilities, an acquisition, foreign-exchange translation or a reclassification as maturity approaches. The balance-sheet movement is a starting point; the notes should identify the cause.
Build a debt checklist
- List bank loans, bonds, private placements and lease liabilities separately when disclosed.
- Record maturities and the amount due within the next twelve months.
- Note interest rates, fixed or floating terms, secured status and significant covenant tests.
- Identify new facilities, refinancing, repayments, defaults or waivers since year-end.
- Read contingent liabilities, guarantees and other material obligations.
- Check whether foreign-currency debt moved because of exchange rates rather than new borrowing.
IAS 34 selected disclosures include significant changes in debt securities issued, repurchased or repaid. The liquidity discussion should also identify available committed facilities and restrictions on cash when the issuer provides that information.
Do not confuse debt size with liquidity
A company can carry substantial debt and meet its obligations if operating cash generation, cash reserves and committed facilities cover the required payments. A company with a small headline debt balance can still face pressure if cash is trapped, maturities are concentrated or operating cash flow is weak. The reviewed standards do not establish a universal “safe” debt ratio or liquidity threshold.
Useful calculations include net debt, current debt as a share of total debt and interest coverage, but only when the report supplies compatible definitions. Label whether lease liabilities are included, whether cash is restricted and whether profit is statutory or adjusted. Treat covenant headroom and management’s liquidity language as important evidence, not as a substitute for the underlying numbers.
Follow the cash-flow statement
The condensed cash-flow statement explains how the opening cash balance became the closing balance. It normally separates:
- Operating activities: cash generated by operations after working-capital movements and other operating cash items.
- Investing activities: purchases and disposals of property, equipment, intangible assets, investments and businesses.
- Financing activities: borrowings, repayments, dividends, share issues, buybacks and other financing transactions.
Classifications can differ under the applicable accounting rules, so use the report’s policy note and subtotals.

Compare profit with operating cash flow
Compare operating cash flow with reported profit over the current and prior comparable periods. A gap is not automatically evidence of poor earnings quality. It can reflect:
- non-cash depreciation, amortisation, impairment or share-based compensation;
- receivables increasing because customers have not yet paid;
- inventory purchased ahead of expected sales;
- supplier-payment timing or a reversal of an earlier working-capital benefit;
- tax, interest or restructuring payments; or
- acquisition and consolidation effects.
Use the working-capital reconciliation and notes to identify the actual driver. Look for a pattern across several comparable periods rather than treating one interim date as conclusive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInterpret investing and financing cash flows
Large investing outflows may represent expansionary capital expenditure, maintenance spending, an acquisition or purchases of financial assets. The notes and management discussion should help distinguish these uses. Financing inflows may show new borrowing or an equity issue; financing outflows may show debt repayment, dividends or share repurchases. Reconcile these flows to the movements in debt, equity and cash on the balance sheet.
The IFRS Foundation describes the objective of interim reporting this way: “Timely and reliable interim financial reporting improves the ability of investors, creditors, and others to understand an entity’s capacity to generate earnings and cash flows and its financial condition and liquidity.” Use that objective as a practical test: can you explain both the reported earnings and the cash movement?
Read the notes that can change the headline interpretation
Do not stop at the four primary statements. Search the notes for:
- accounting-policy changes and new standards;
- changes in estimates, provisions and impairments;
- unusual or non-recurring items;
- seasonality and cyclical effects;
- acquisitions, disposals and discontinued operations;
- segment reorganizations and revenue disaggregation;
- debt issuance, repayment, refinancing and covenant matters;
- fair-value measurements and financial-instrument exposures;
- material events after the reporting date; and
- management-defined performance measures and their reconciliations.
The exact disclosures depend on the reporting framework, adopted standards and materiality. A line that changed sharply from the prior interim period should lead you to its note before you draw a conclusion.

A repeatable half-year reading workflow
- Map the document. Mark the statement pages, management discussion, risk factors, accounting policies, debt note, segment note and cash-flow reconciliation.
- Create a comparison sheet. Enter current and prior half-year revenue, profit measures and cash flows, plus current interim-date and prior year-end balance-sheet amounts.
- Calculate defined changes. Compute like-for-like revenue growth and each margin using the same numerator definition in both periods.
- Explain revenue. Record management’s quantified volume, price, mix, acquisition and currency drivers, and distinguish reported from constant-currency figures.
- Bridge profit to cash. Identify non-cash adjustments and each major working-capital movement.
- Reconcile debt and liquidity. Tie borrowing movements to financing cash flow and notes; record maturities, facilities, covenants and restrictions on cash.
- Challenge adjusted measures. Reconcile every “underlying” result to the statutory result and assess whether exclusions recur.
- Check risks and subsequent events. Look for litigation, refinancing needs, covenant pressure, acquisitions, disposals or events after the interim date.
- Write a one-sentence diagnosis. State what changed, the disclosed reason, whether cash generation supports the earnings, and the main liquidity risk or uncertainty.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Comparing the wrong periods
Mistake: comparing the current six months with the previous six months or with a full year. Correction: use the corresponding prior-year half-year for income and cash flow, and the latest year-end for the balance sheet.

Treating revenue growth as organic growth
Mistake: assuming a higher total means stronger underlying demand. Correction: separate disclosed acquisition, currency, price, volume and mix effects.
Using “margin” without naming the profit measure
Mistake: presenting one percentage as if all margins mean the same thing. Correction: state gross, operating or net margin and show the formula.
Accepting adjusted profit at face value
Mistake: treating an adjusted number as more real than the statutory result. Correction: read the reconciliation, test consistency and consider whether excluded costs recur.
