The practical choice depends on what you value most. APSRTC buses are the straightforward public-transport option from several points in Tirupati; a private vehicle or hired taxi/maxi cab gives a group a direct road journey; and the Alipiri or Srivari Mettu sopanamarga offers a pedestrian approach with different levels of physical effort. TTD’s route guidance lists the current road distances, walking-route estimates, bus fares and footpath facilities, but fares, schedules, restrictions and access arrangements can change.

Use the comparison and step-by-step sections below to choose a departure point, budget correctly, prepare for the road or climb, and verify the details that may change before you leave.

Route snapshot: the choices from Tirupati to Tirumala

Tirumala is connected to Tirupati by two all-weather asphalt ghat roads and two stone pedestrian paths, known as sopanamargas. TTD’s current route guidance describes the uphill road as approximately 17.80 km and the downhill road as approximately 18.00 km. It does not publish a single guaranteed road travel time, so allow for traffic, checks, weather and any operating restrictions rather than planning around an assumed duration.

Option Where you start Distance or route figure Published cost information Best suited to
APSRTC bus Tirupati Railway Station, RTC Central Bus Station, Sri Padmavathi Bus Station or Balaji Link Bus Station Uses the ghat road; TTD lists the uphill road at about 17.80 km and the downhill road at about 18.00 km TTD route page: Rs. 90 per adult and Rs. 50 per child one way; return ticket Rs. 160 per adult and Rs. 90 per child, valid for three days from purchase Most travelers who want a published public-transport fare and no climb
Taxi, maxi cab or your own vehicle Your chosen pickup point in Tirupati Uses one of the two ghat roads TTD confirms that taxis/maxi cabs can be hired and that vehicles of up to 12 seats are permitted; no reliable fare is established here Families, groups, bulky luggage or travelers who need a direct pickup
Alipiri sopanamarga Alipiri footpath entrance About 7.80 km; TTD’s approximate walking estimate is three hours No road-bus fare applies to the climb; confirm any current arrangements at the entrance Walkers who want the longer pedestrian route and can manage sustained effort
Srivari Mettu sopanamarga Srivari Mettu footpath entrance About 2.10 km; TTD’s approximate walking estimate is one hour 30 minutes No road-bus fare applies to the climb; confirm any current arrangements at the entrance Walkers seeking the shorter pedestrian route

The walking figures are approximate route lengths and approximate times, not a promise of how long any individual will take. Your pace, rest stops, heat, rain, health and crowd conditions all affect the climb.

Taking the APSRTC bus

Where buses leave

TTD says APSRTC operates regular services to Tirumala from four Tirupati locations: Tirupati Railway Station, RTC Central Bus Station, Sri Padmavathi Bus Station and Balaji Link Bus Station. This gives rail passengers and people arriving at the main bus terminals more than one place to board. Check the operating counter or the latest APSRTC information on the day because departure intervals and platform assignments can change.

TTD’s separate transport information also describes free buses from Tirupati railway station to Alipiri every 30 minutes. Those vehicles are useful for reaching the pedestrian-route entrance; do not assume that a free railway-station-to-Alipiri service is the same as a regular bus all the way to Tirumala.

Published bus fares

The route-specific TTD page currently lists the following road-journey fares. These figures were available in TTD guidance accessed in 2026 and should be rechecked close to departure.

Ticket Adult Child Validity or qualification
One way Rs. 90 Rs. 50 TTD-published fare for the road journey; fares can change
Return journey Rs. 160 Rs. 90 Valid for three days from purchase, according to the current route-specific TTD page

An older TTD transport page carries different fare information. Because the two official pages conflict, use the current route-specific page for the figures above and verify the price at the ticket counter or through current TTD/APSRTC information before paying. Do not rely on a fare copied from an old travel post.

How to use the bus option

  1. Choose the Tirupati departure point closest to your arrival point or accommodation.
  2. At the station, ask specifically for the next service to Tirumala and confirm whether the ticket is one way or return.
  3. Check the adult and child quantities before purchase, and keep the ticket until you reach your destination.
  4. Ask staff about the current boarding bay, expected queue and any same-day road restrictions.
  5. Keep essential medicines, identification, water and valuables with you rather than in a bag that may be separated from you.

The bus is generally the simplest choice when you are traveling alone or with a small party and do not need a private stop. It also avoids negotiating a vehicle price. Its trade-off is less control over pickup timing and seating than a hired vehicle.

Using a taxi, maxi cab or your own vehicle

What TTD permits

TTD says pilgrims may drive their own vehicle or hire a taxi or maxi cab with capacity of up to 12 seats. That makes a hired vehicle practical for a family, a pilgrimage group or anyone carrying luggage who wants door-to-door pickup in Tirupati. TTD does not publish a dependable taxi fare in the cited route guidance, so a price quoted by one operator should not be presented as an official rate.

What to confirm before accepting a quote

  • Ask for the total price, including any waiting, parking, toll, night or return charges, and clarify whether the quote is for the whole vehicle or per passenger.
  • Confirm the vehicle’s seating capacity and whether all passengers can travel legally and comfortably.
  • Agree on the pickup address, destination, return plan and what happens if the vehicle must wait.
  • Check whether the driver knows the current access rules for the ghat roads and where passengers may be dropped.
  • Get the operator’s cancellation and breakdown contact details in writing.

Do not choose a taxi solely because an online post gives a low number. Prices vary with vehicle type, demand, timing and the terms of the trip, and no named operator or fare is established by the TTD material used for this guide.

Road access and operating hours

TTD says the roads are normally open for vehicle movement from 3:00 AM to midnight. On special occasions, vehicle movement may operate around the clock. Pilgrims must follow travel-time restrictions and any instructions in force when they travel. “Normally open” is not a guarantee that a particular vehicle will be admitted at a particular time: verify the current status before setting out, especially for an overnight or festival journey.

For a self-drive trip, check fuel, tires, brakes, lights and the spare wheel before entering the ghat road. Keep the driver rested and obey signs and staff directions. A private vehicle provides flexibility, but the driver remains responsible for complying with access controls and for managing the group if a road restriction changes the plan.

Walking to Tirumala on a sopanamarga

Alipiri: the longer pedestrian route

TTD lists the Alipiri sopanamarga at approximately 7.80 km and gives an approximate walking time of three hours. It is the longer of the two routes in the current guidance. Choose it only if everyone in the group is prepared for a sustained climb and can adjust pace and rest periods to their health and fitness.

Srivari Mettu: the shorter pedestrian route

TTD lists Srivari Mettu at approximately 2.10 km and an approximate walking time of one hour 30 minutes. The shorter distance does not make it effortless: the path still involves steps and climbing, and the actual time depends on the walker and conditions.

Reaching the footpath entrances

Pilgrims can reach the starts of the pedestrian paths by free TTD buses or APSRTC buses from Tirupati. TTD’s transport information specifically describes a free bus from Tirupati railway station to Alipiri every 30 minutes. Confirm the current service and ask whether the bus you are boarding goes to the entrance you intend to use; a bus to Alipiri does not take you to Srivari Mettu.

Facilities along the paths

TTD lists toilets, drinking water, resting shelters, medical assistance, catering, security patrols and continuous religious broadcasts along the footpaths. These facilities make the routes more manageable, but they do not remove the need to pace yourself or carry any personal medication you may require. Availability and operating arrangements can change, so treat the list as the facilities TTD describes, not a promise that every point will be open at every moment.

Luggage handling

TTD says walkers can deposit luggage at the foot of the hills and collect it at designated counters in Tirumala. Before handing over a bag, confirm the current counter location, operating hours, identification requirement and collection process. Keep valuables, documents and essential medicine with you unless staff give you a specific secure procedure for those items.

Prepare for the physical effort

  • Choose footwear with a secure grip and enough comfort for repeated steps; shoes are a preparation option, not a TTD requirement or endorsement of a particular brand.
  • Start at a pace that allows conversation and regular rest rather than trying to match another group’s speed.
  • Use the drinking-water and rest facilities identified by TTD, and carry a small personal supply while walking between them.
  • Anyone with a medical condition, recent injury or uncertainty about the climb should consider the road option and seek appropriate medical advice before choosing a sopanamarga.
  • Keep rain protection and a phone charged, since weather and waiting conditions can alter the experience.

Walking the path does not, by itself, guarantee a particular darshan time, token, queue position or other temple-access arrangement. Those arrangements are separate from the physical route and must be checked through current TTD instructions.

How to decide between bus, taxi and walking

If your priority is… Usually start with… Why Check before departure
A published, relatively simple fare APSRTC bus TTD lists adult and child one-way and return prices for the road journey Current fare, departure bay and any restrictions
Door-to-door convenience for a group Taxi or maxi cab One vehicle can collect the group and carry luggage; capacity up to 12 seats is described by TTD Total quote, vehicle size, waiting terms and road access
The shortest listed walk Srivari Mettu TTD lists about 2.10 km and approximately 1 hour 30 minutes Path access, transport to the entrance and your group’s ability to climb
A longer pedestrian approach with more walking time Alipiri TTD lists about 7.80 km and approximately three hours Health, weather, rest plan and luggage deposit procedure
Maximum control over departure time Private vehicle or pre-arranged taxi You choose the pickup point and can coordinate the group directly Travel-time restrictions and any special-occasion controls

For a mixed group, separate the decision into two questions: how will everyone reach the hill, and how much physical effort can everyone safely manage? A group may travel by bus or taxi and reserve energy for temple activities, while a fit group may prefer a sopanamarga. Avoid choosing a walking route only because it appears cheaper if a member of the party may struggle with the climb.

A practical departure checklist

  1. Verify current information. Check the latest TTD route guidance and APSRTC information for fares, services, road restrictions, path access and any special-occasion changes.
  2. Choose the route. Select a bus departure point, arrange a taxi/private vehicle, or decide between Alipiri and Srivari Mettu.
  3. Confirm the time. Road access is normally described as 3:00 AM to midnight, but restrictions can override normal hours. Walking-path access and transport to the entrances should also be confirmed.
  4. Pack for the option you selected. Keep water, medicines, identification, phone and valuables accessible. Walkers should use secure, comfortable footwear and avoid an unnecessarily heavy bag.
  5. Plan luggage. If walking, ask at the foot of the hills about the current deposit counter and collection rules. If using a vehicle, keep bags secure and agree with the driver where they will remain.
  6. Allow contingency time. Published walking durations are approximate, buses may queue, and road movement can be affected by traffic or restrictions.
  7. Save assistance numbers. TTD lists 0877-2263636 and 9000503089 for auto-clinic or crane assistance, and 108 for an ambulance.

Breakdowns, accidents and assistance

For a vehicle breakdown or accident, TTD lists 0877-2263636 and 9000503089 for auto-clinic or crane assistance. It lists 108 for ambulance support. Vehicle-assistance charges apply according to the rates in force. Call emergency services first when someone is injured, then provide your exact location and follow staff instructions.

Do not block a ghat lane while waiting for help. If the vehicle is safe to move, follow directions from authorized personnel; if it is not safe, use hazard lights and keep passengers away from traffic as far as conditions allow. These are general safety steps, while the assistance numbers and applicable charges come from TTD’s published guidance.

Changes, caveats and historical context

Fares, schedules, road restrictions, token arrangements and footpath facilities are operational details, not permanent promises. The current route-specific TTD page should take precedence over the older transport page for the bus fares quoted in this guide, but even current figures should be checked near your travel date.

A TTD news report dated 6 May 2025 recorded the Executive Officer’s statement that facilities along the Srivari Mettu footpath would be improved. The same report mentioned pilgrim difficulty obtaining tokens and complaints about auto drivers and fares at that time. Those statements are historical context; they do not establish a current token shortage, current taxi pricing or current conditions. Ask staff for the latest arrangements instead of assuming that a 2025 report describes your trip.

Quick answer

Take an APSRTC bus if you want the clearest published road fare and a straightforward departure from one of Tirupati’s major transport points. Hire a taxi or maxi cab, or use your own vehicle, when your group needs a direct pickup and flexible luggage handling; obtain a current all-in quote because TTD does not publish a dependable taxi fare here. Walk via Alipiri for the longer approximately 7.80 km route or via Srivari Mettu for the shorter approximately 2.10 km route, using the footpath facilities and luggage arrangements TTD describes and choosing only a climb your group can safely manage.
