Rank a champion because your roster has a specific job for them—not because a catalyst is sitting in your inventory. Before you spend Gold, ISO-8, catalysts, fragments, Units or a limited store currency, identify the quest, boss, event or competitive mode you are preparing for. Open that champion’s live upgrade panel, record the exact missing materials, and decide whether concentrating resources on one champion solves a real problem better than adding coverage with another champion.
Marvel Contest of Champions changes quest rotations, store stock and rank-up requirements over time. The in-game upgrade screen is therefore the authority for your account; dated announcements explain how systems work, but they do not replace the requirements shown for the champion you are upgrading.
What a rank-up should accomplish
A rank-up is efficient when it changes what your roster can do. That might mean a counter for a boss, a champion that satisfies a Battlegrounds or event requirement, a better option for Alliance content, or enough survivability to finish a quest path. A higher number by itself is not a plan.

- Name the job. Write down the fight, quest, mode or progression gate the champion must handle.
- Check the live requirement. Open the champion from your Champions roster and enter the current rank-up or upgrade panel. Record the catalyst class and tier, fragments, Gold and ISO-8 shown there.
- Check the alternatives. Ask whether another champion already covers the same matchup and whether a different champion would add a missing class, ability or counter.
- Choose a stopping point. Do not spend materials for a later rank until the present rank has delivered the utility you needed.
Kabam has described both concentrated investment and a wider roster as legitimate approaches. Champion abilities remain important alongside raw power, so a lower-ranked champion with the right ability can be a better answer than a higher-ranked duplicate.

How to rank up without guessing
1. Start from the champion’s upgrade panel
Open the champion’s profile from the roster and select the rank-up or upgrade control shown by your current game version. The panel lists the materials required for that specific rarity and rank. Use those values rather than an old cost chart, a forum post or a remembered requirement from another champion.
If the upgrade control is unavailable, read the panel’s requirement list. A catalyst in your inventory does not prove that every prerequisite is met: the game may still need fragments, Gold, ISO-8, a different catalyst tier, a progression qualification or a prerequisite rank. The forum question about waiting for a “blue arrow” reflects this confusion, but community discussion is not an authoritative description of the current interface.
2. Separate the blocker from the total cost
Mark the one item that actually prevents the upgrade. If you have enough Gold and ISO-8 but lack a particular basic catalyst, buying more Gold is irrelevant. If the catalyst is present but fragments are short, target fragment rewards or a selector rather than taking a random catalyst.

3. Confirm that the champion is eligible
Progression can affect event difficulty, store access and features such as Rank Up Now. If a rank or feature is locked, check the message in the game instead of assuming that the missing item is the only problem.
4. Spend, then reassess the next rank
After ranking up, return to the champion’s panel and reassess the next requirement. The next rank may require a different catalyst tier or a quantity that makes a second champion more efficient for your current objective. A staged plan prevents you from emptying your inventory before a new quest or event starts.

Build a material plan around the exact bottleneck
Catalysts and fragments
Kabam’s March 15, 2025 support guidance identifies Catalyst Selectors as available from daily Catalyst Vault quests, Story Quests, monthly Event Quests and event rewards. A selector is most valuable when it lets you choose the exact catalyst or fragment tier blocking your planned rank-up. Taking a random reward while a specific class is missing can leave the real bottleneck unchanged.
Use the live upgrade panel to determine the tier and class. The reviewed official material does not provide a complete, current Gold, ISO-8 and catalyst cost table for every rarity and rank, so legacy tables should not be treated as universal.

Gold and ISO-8
Gold and ISO-8 are easy to overlook because they are not catalysts, yet either can keep the rank-up control disabled. Keep enough of both for the complete transaction shown in the panel. A catalyst plan that ignores the accompanying Gold or ISO-8 requirement is incomplete.
Selectors versus random rewards
Prefer a selector when you can identify the exact catalyst that will be used soon. If you have no near-term champion plan, preserving the selector until a real blocker appears can be more efficient than choosing a material merely because it is available.
Use recurring quests deliberately
Kabam’s September 2025 “Dev Diary: Questing, Prestige, and Alliance Updates” described a resource-focused daily quest, a catalyst-focused daily quest and weekday Supply Runs that build toward a Sunday Super Run. The announced Sunday version requires four Supply Intels. This is a dated description of the system; rotations and rewards can change, so inspect the current quest menu before planning around it.

Resource-focused daily quest
Use the resource quest when Gold or ISO-8—not a catalyst—is the item stopping the upgrade. Spending energy on a catalyst run will not solve a currency shortage.
Catalyst-focused daily quest
Target the catalyst quest when the upgrade panel identifies a catalyst or catalyst fragments as the blocker. Compare the reward’s tier with the requirement; a lower-tier reward may be useful for another champion but not for the rank you are preparing.
Supply Runs and the Sunday Super Run
Monday-to-Saturday Supply Runs were described as feeding a Sunday Super Run. Save and use the four required Supply Intels only when the Sunday rewards match your priority. If the current cycle has different requirements, follow the live quest description rather than the September 2025 announcement.
Understand the stores before spending limited currency

Store announcements describe systems, not guaranteed live inventory. Before spending Radiance, Glory or Units, open the store and verify the item, price, purchase limit, reset timer and progression requirement displayed for your account.
Choose depth or breadth with a concrete test
Kabam’s 7-Star Ascension guidance presents two valid roster strategies: empower a small number of champions as far as possible, or distribute materials among more champions, including champions that cannot yet Ascend. The better choice depends on the job your roster currently cannot perform.

This test avoids a universal “always rank to X” rule. Rank 5 and Rank 6 champions are intended to remain competitive even when a particular champion cannot yet use Ascension, so the absence of Ascension access is not by itself a reason to abandon a useful champion.
Ascension versus a normal rank-up
For 7-Star champions, compare Ascension with a normal rank-up using more than the visible Attack number. Kabam’s power-scaling explanation says the first two 7-Star Ascension ranks together add slightly less Attack and Health than one typical champion rank. Each of those first two Ascension ranks adds roughly the Challenge Rating of a catalyst rank. These are developer comparisons, not an independent measurement for every champion.
Evaluate the two paths across five items:
- Combat stats: Attack and Health gained by the specific option.
- Challenge Rating: Whether the change helps the content or progression requirement you are pursuing.
- Abilities: Whether the champion’s kit gains more practical value from stats, or whether another champion’s utility is the real answer.
- Prestige and mode rules: Whether prestige or a mode-specific roster requirement makes one champion more valuable.
- Materials: The exact catalysts, fragments, Gold and ISO-8 shown for that champion, plus the cost of obtaining any missing item.
Do not treat the developer’s “slightly less than one typical rank” comparison as a promise that every account should Ascend first. It is a way to frame the trade-off; the live champion panel and your content objective determine the decision.

Rank Up Now can directly rank an eligible champion by spending Units when you are short on rank-up material. Its availability varies with progression, and the official announcement does not establish that the Unit cost is better than waiting for a quest, selector or store reset.

Consider it only after checking:
- The exact material you are missing and whether a scheduled quest or store cycle can supply it.
- The number of Units required and what other in-game uses those Units would replace.
- Whether the champion solves an immediate content problem rather than providing a marginal stat increase.
- Whether the feature is available for the champion and rank on your account.
If the answer to the immediate-need question is no, waiting for a targeted reward is usually the more defensible resource decision. That is a planning principle, not a claim that Rank Up Now is never worthwhile.

Do not sell catalysts just because they look surplus
Kabam confirms that selling catalysts gives Gold and fragments toward the next Catalyst Tier. The support guidance does not establish a calculation showing that selling is generally profitable. A catalyst that is unused today may be the exact item needed for a planned champion or a future rank.
Before selling, record:
- The catalyst tier and class.
- Champions in your roster that will require it for a known plan.
- The Gold and fragment return shown by the sale screen.
- Whether a selector, quest or store purchase could replace it later, and at what opportunity cost.
Sell only when the immediate return has a defined purpose and you have checked that the catalyst is not part of a near-term upgrade. “Surplus” should mean surplus after your plan, not merely surplus compared with today’s inventory limit.
Worked planning examples
Example: one missing class catalyst
You want a champion for a specific quest boss. The upgrade panel shows that Gold and ISO-8 are sufficient, but one class catalyst is missing. First check the current Catalyst Vault, Story Quest, monthly Event Quest and event-reward options. If a selector can choose that exact class and tier, it is more targeted than accepting a random catalyst. If the next available reward is outside the required tier, consider whether another champion already handles the boss before spending Units in Rank Up Now.
Example: two good champions, one limited selector
Champion A would gain raw stats but duplicates an existing counter. Champion B has an ability that covers a matchup your roster lacks. If both require the same selector, B has the stronger roster argument even if A has a higher current rating. Confirm that B’s live rank-up panel accepts the selector’s tier before committing it.
Example: Ascension or another champion
A 7-Star champion can take an early Ascension rank, while a different champion can be ranked into a missing utility role. Compare the first option’s documented Attack, Health and Challenge Rating effect with the second option’s ability and coverage. If the content you are failing requires the second champion’s utility, the broader investment can be more valuable than a modest stat increase.
Troubleshoot a rank-up that will not activate
- Reopen the live upgrade panel. Confirm that you are viewing the intended champion and the next rank, not a different rank or Ascension option.
- Read every requirement. Check catalyst class and tier, fragments, Gold and ISO-8 instead of looking only for a catalyst icon.
- Check progression locks. Some features and stores depend on account progression; read the in-game message for the missing qualification.
- Refresh your inventory view. After claiming a quest reward or purchasing an item, return to the champion panel so the requirement display updates.
- Verify the item’s identity. A catalyst from the wrong class or tier will not satisfy the requirement even when its icon looks similar.
- Do not infer timing from the blue arrow. The forum phrase describes a player’s experience, not a guaranteed current rule. Use the requirements and status text shown by the game version you are running.
A practical pre-spend checklist
- I can name the quest, boss, event or mode this rank-up is for.
- The champion supplies a needed counter, ability, class or mode qualification.
- I opened the current upgrade panel and wrote down every required material.
- I know which single item is the blocker.
- I checked daily quests, selectors, event rewards and relevant stores for a targeted source.
- I compared a deeper investment with adding another useful champion.
- I checked Radiance, Glory or Unit prices and reset timers in the live store.
- I am not selling a catalyst that belongs to a near-term plan.
- I know what the next rank would cost before spending on the current one.
Following this checklist turns rank-up materials into a planned progression tool: spend when the champion solves a defined problem, target the exact bottleneck, and keep enough roster breadth to handle the content that comes next.
