Use dig to inspect DNS records and resolver responses, whois to look up domain or IP registration data, and ping to test ICMP reachability and round-trip time. Run them together: a DNS response tells you how a name resolves, while ping tells you whether ICMP packets return. Neither command confirms that an application such as HTTPS is working.
What each command actually tests
These utilities answer different questions at different layers. Keeping those layers separate prevents a common troubleshooting mistake: treating a successful ping as proof that a website is healthy, or treating a missing DNS answer as proof that a server is offline.
Recommended Free Tools
| Command | Data layer | Main target | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|---|
dig |
DNS resource records and resolver responses | A name, record type and optional DNS server | How a resolver answered a DNS query, including status, flags and response sections |
whois |
Registration or allocation directory data | A domain, IP address, AS or another registry object | What the selected RFC 3912 database publishes about that object |
ping |
ICMP host reachability and timing | A hostname or IP address | Whether ICMP echo replies returned, how many were lost and the measured round-trip times |
A name can resolve correctly while its host blocks ICMP. Conversely, a host can answer ping while its web service is down. Use a DNS query first, then a reachability test, and finally an application-specific check when the problem concerns a service.

dig -v
whois --version
ping -V
If a command does not accept its version option, run its help output instead. Package names, command versions and option details can vary by Ubuntu release, so read the manpage installed on the system you are diagnosing:
man dig
man whois
man ping
The commands below assume the corresponding Ubuntu packages are installed. A version string is release-specific; record the Ubuntu release and the date when you report one so another administrator can reproduce the same behavior.
Query DNS records with dig
The Ubuntu BIND9 dig utility is designed for interrogating DNS name servers. Its documented basic form is dig [@server] name type. If you omit @server, it uses the name servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf. If you omit the type, the default query is for an A record.
Run a basic lookup
dig example.com
The response is divided into sections. During diagnosis, inspect the status line, flags, answer section, authority section and additional section rather than looking only for an address. The status indicates whether the resolver completed the query; flags describe how the response was handled; the sections show the records returned and any related delegation or supplementary data.
Ask for a particular record type
dig example.com A
dig example.com AAAA
dig example.com MX
An A query asks for IPv4 addresses, AAAA asks for IPv6 addresses, and MX asks for mail-exchange records. Specifying the type avoids confusing an empty result for one record class with a failure of DNS as a whole.

Compare resolvers
dig @1.1.1.1 example.com A
The @1.1.1.1 form sends the query to that explicitly selected DNS server instead of the resolvers in /etc/resolv.conf. Compare this output with an unqualified query to determine whether the result differs by resolver. A difference can identify a local resolver, forwarding or DNS-policy issue, but it does not by itself prove which answer is globally correct.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Perform a reverse lookup
dig -x 192.0.2.10
-x requests reverse-lookup behavior for an IP address. Reverse DNS is a separate namespace from the forward A or AAAA query, so a missing PTR result does not mean that forward resolution is broken.
Follow delegation from the root
dig +trace example.com
+trace follows the delegation path from the DNS root toward the name’s authoritative servers. This is useful when a recursive resolver gives an unexpected answer or when you need to see where a delegation stops. Because the trace walks the hierarchy instead of simply asking your configured resolver for its final result, compare it with a normal query rather than treating it as a replacement for one.
Reduce the output for scripts or quick checks
dig +short example.com A
dig +noall +answer example.com MX
+short prints a compact result. +noall +answer suppresses the other display sections and leaves the answer section visible. These formats are convenient for a quick comparison, but use the full response when investigating status, flags, authority information or additional records.
Use whois for registration and allocation context
whois searches for an object in an RFC 3912 directory database. It is not a DNS query tool: it does not tell you which address a resolver returned. Instead, it can expose registration or allocation information for a domain, IP address, autonomous-system object or another object supported by the selected database.

Look up a domain
whois example.com
The client attempts to guess a suitable server for the object. The returned fields depend on the registry or database that answered. Privacy redaction and server-specific policies can leave contact, ownership or other fields absent, so an incomplete record is not automatically evidence of a failed query.
Look up an IP address
whois 192.0.2.10
An IP lookup can provide allocation context from the relevant directory. It does not test whether the address is currently reachable and does not replace a reverse-DNS query with dig -x.
Select a server explicitly
whois -h whois.example.net example.com
-h (also written --host) directs the client to a particular WHOIS server. Explicit selection is useful when the default guess is unsuitable or when you need to compare the policies of two databases. Interpret the result in the context of that server; WHOIS has no single response format shared by every registry.
Ask IANA first and follow its referral
whois -I example.com
With -I, the client queries whois.iana.org first and then follows the authoritative referral. This can clarify which registry should answer a domain query. Referral behavior is directory-related and should not be confused with DNS delegation, which is what dig +trace displays.
Test reachability and latency with ping
ping uses the ICMP protocol’s mandatory ECHO_REQUEST datagram to elicit an ECHO_RESPONSE from a host or gateway. It reports replies, packet loss and round-trip timing, and supports both IPv4 and IPv6.

Send a bounded IPv4-or-default test
ping -c 4 example.com
-c 4 sends four probes and then exits, which is safer for a diagnostic transcript than an unbounded interactive run. If the target is a hostname, ping must resolve that name before it can send the probes. Successful replies therefore show both that the name resolved and that ICMP responses returned from the selected address.
Choose the address family
ping -4 -c 4 example.com
ping -6 -c 4 example.com
Use -4 to force IPv4 or -6 to force IPv6. Testing each family separately can reveal a problem that affects only one address family, such as an unreachable IPv6 path or a host that answers on IPv4 but not IPv6.
Set a per-probe timeout
ping -c 4 -W 2 example.com
-W 2 sets a two-second timeout for each reply. A timeout means that no reply arrived within that interval; it does not identify the cause. Filtering, routing, host policy, congestion or a name-resolution problem can all lead to an unsuccessful test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA repeatable DNS-versus-network troubleshooting workflow
Run the tests in an order that preserves evidence. Use the same hostname, address family and resolver when comparing results.
- Confirm the tools. Run
dig -v,whois --versionandping -V(or each command’s help output) and note the Ubuntu release. - Query the configured resolver. Start with
dig example.com A. Record the status, flags and answer section, not just the returned address. - Check the other address family when relevant. Run
dig example.com AAAAif the client may use IPv6. - Compare a selected resolver. Run
dig @1.1.1.1 example.com Aand compare it with the default-resolver result. A discrepancy points toward resolver-path or policy differences. - Inspect delegation if the answers remain unexpected. Run
dig +trace example.comto follow the hierarchy from the root. - Test ICMP using the same name. Run
ping -c 4 example.com, then repeat withping -4orping -6when the address family matters. - Use an IP target only after recording the DNS result. Pinging the returned address separates name resolution from the path to that address, but it still tests ICMP rather than the application.
- Use WHOIS for ownership or allocation questions. Run
whois example.comorwhois 192.0.2.10; use-hor-Iwhen server selection or referral needs to be explicit.
How to interpret common outcomes
DNS returns an address and ping succeeds
The resolver supplied an address and ICMP probes received replies. This is evidence of name-resolution behavior and ICMP reachability for that target at that time. It does not establish that a web server, API, mail service or TLS endpoint is accepting application traffic.

DNS returns an address but ping fails
The name-resolution step worked, while the ICMP test did not receive usable replies. Firewalls, routing, host policy and ICMP filtering can all produce this pattern. Do not delete or change a DNS record solely because ping is unsuccessful; test the relevant application separately.
DNS fails and ping by hostname fails
Because ping must resolve a hostname before sending probes, this combination is consistent with a name-resolution problem, but it does not prove that DNS is the only cause. Run dig against the same name, then test a known address if you have one. Comparing the default resolver with an explicitly selected server helps identify whether the issue is local to the configured resolver path.
DNS answers differ between servers
Different recursive servers can return different results because of resolver configuration, forwarding, policy or the point in the DNS delegation path that each one reached. Capture the complete response, including status, flags and authority information, before drawing a conclusion. Use +trace to inspect delegation independently.
WHOIS output is sparse or missing fields
WHOIS data is database-specific. The selected registry may redact personal information, omit fields or expose a format unlike another server’s output. Try an explicitly selected server with -h, or begin with -I so the IANA referral identifies the authoritative directory where that behavior is supported.
Command comparison at a glance
| Axis | dig |
whois |
ping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data layer | DNS resource records and resolver responses | Registration or allocation directory data | ICMP host reachability and timing |
| Main target | Name, record type, optional DNS server | Domain, IP, AS or other registry object | Hostname or IP address |
| Key controls | @server, type, -x, +trace, output filters |
-h, -I, object, type and server options |
-4, -6, -c, -W, -w |
| What a failure can mean | A resolver or query problem, or a missing record | The wrong server, an unsupported object or redacted data | No ICMP reply; it does not diagnose DNS or application health by itself |
Practical limits to keep in mind
- A DNS answer describes what the queried resolver returned; it is not a guarantee that every resolver sees the same data.
- A ping reply demonstrates an ICMP exchange, not that TCP, TLS, HTTP or another application protocol is functioning.
- A ping timeout does not distinguish filtering from routing, host policy, congestion or an earlier name-resolution problem.
- WHOIS is a directory lookup governed by the selected database. Registry policies and privacy redaction affect which fields appear.
- Output options such as
+shortare useful for compact checks but hide response sections that may be essential when diagnosing delegation or resolver behavior.
Conclusion
For a disciplined Ubuntu diagnosis, start with dig to establish how DNS answers the name, use explicit resolver and address-family options when comparing paths, consult whois for registration or allocation context, and use bounded ping tests to measure ICMP reachability. Keep each result in its proper scope, then verify the application protocol that the user is actually trying to reach.
