There is no single U.S. military cyber retention bonus, and a cyber job or certification does not qualify you automatically. You generally need to be in a service and component covered by an active incentive, meet that program’s specialty and personal eligibility rules, and accept its required additional service. The current service-specific message or chart—and your personnel record—determine whether you qualify and what, if anything, you may receive.

What qualifies as a cyber retention bonus?

A retention bonus is a service-authorized incentive tied to a defined personnel need. Depending on the program, eligibility may depend on your specialty, rating or Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC), work role, grade, service time, assignment, component, reenlistment timing, and willingness to serve for an additional period. The exact combination varies by service and by the incentive in effect.

Federal law provides general authority for retention incentives, but it does not create one standard cyber bonus with a universal amount or eligibility list. Services identify the skills and personnel they need, set applicable terms, and update their programs. An older announcement, a budget document, or a general description of cyber work cannot establish that an offer is open to you now.

  • Cyber duties are not enough: your work must match the specialty, skill, unit, or work role designated by the applicable program, if one is required.
  • Qualifications are not enough: a certification or DoD cyber workforce qualification may be relevant to an incentive’s criteria, but it does not itself authorize a retention bonus.
  • Eligibility is individual: the program’s current terms must match your service, component, record, and timing.
  • Additional service is usually part of the deal: the required reenlistment, extension, or written agreement is a central term, not a detail to resolve after accepting payment.

In practice, qualification has two parts: the service must currently authorize an incentive for the relevant skill or role, and you must personally meet its conditions. A chart can establish that a specialty is included without proving that a particular member, contract, or reenlistment date meets every requirement. Conversely, a member may have substantial cyber experience and still fall outside the active list or program terms.

Some programs require reenlistment, while others may use an extension or a written service agreement. Do not assume that a bonus is simply a payment for holding a cyber qualification. Confirm exactly what action creates the obligation, how long the added service lasts, and whether the service expects you to remain in a named skill or assignment during that period.

How eligibility differs by service

The table summarizes the distinctions supported by service-specific guidance as of October 13, 2026. It is not a substitute for the current official message or an individual eligibility check. No reliable cross-service cyber retention-bonus amount is established here.

Service What to match Where to verify Amount information
Army For an enlisted Selective Retention Bonus (SRB), meet the current HQDA/HRC criteria and the conditions in the SRB message. The applicable MOS and contract terms matter; a cyber MOS alone is not proof of eligibility. The current Army SRB message and Army retention guidance; have a retention or career-management office verify your record. No universal current cyber SRB amount is established. The current message in effect at reenlistment controls.
Air Force and Space Force Active-duty Airmen and Guardians must serve in a selected military skill covered by the SRB and reenlist for additional obligated service. Members are expected to serve in the SRB skill for the enlistment covered by the bonus. The current authorized skill listing and Air Force Personnel Center instructions. Check the current listing and personnel instructions for the specific skill and contract; no cross-service cyber amount is established.
Navy Eligibility is tied to particular ratings and Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs), as well as the member’s status and reenlistment timing. The current Navy SRB eligibility chart and the Sailor’s career-management or retention office. The Cyber Warfare Technician community page points to SRB and other special-pay resources. Award levels change with retention requirements; use the current chart rather than an older amount.

These programs are not interchangeable. Confirm the current instructions for your own service and component rather than borrowing a specialty list, eligibility rule, or amount from another branch. If your service or component is not covered in the details above, obtain its current official incentive guidance; the listed services do not establish eligibility for others.

When checking a list, match the precise designation used by the service. For the Army, that may mean the MOS and the terms of the SRB message; for the Navy, the rating and NEC combination; for Airmen and Guardians, the skill shown on the authorized listing. A similar job title, a unit that performs cyber work, or another member’s eligibility is not a substitute for the exact entry and conditions.

Army: distinguish an SRB from cyber assignment pay

Enlisted Selective Retention Bonus

An Army enlisted SRB is governed by HQDA/HRC criteria and the current SRB message. Army Regulation 601-280 describes general conditions involving qualifying service and a reenlistment or extension. The Army retention page explains that awards reflect factors such as MOS strength, contract length, and operational needs, and states that “Bonuses will be determined by the SRB message in effect at the time of reenlistment.” That is why an old message or a broad claim that a cyber MOS is eligible is not enough: the specific message in force for your reenlistment must cover your circumstances.

Before proceeding, ask the retention office to identify the exact message and provision that applies to your MOS, contract, and record. Do not infer an award from another Soldier’s offer; a change in timing, service status, contract length, or program rules may change the result.

Also distinguish general SRB conditions from the specific criteria that determine an individual award. The Army’s general regulation and retention information do not replace the current message. Ask the office to explain which eligibility entry applies, whether your planned reenlistment or extension fits its terms, and whether anything in your record affects the determination. If an answer relies on a message from a prior period, ask whether it remains in effect for your date.

Cyber Assignment Incentive Pay is a different program

Army Cyber Assignment Incentive Pay (CAIP) is a monthly incentive, not an SRB for reenlisting. An April 10, 2024 U.S. Army Cyber Command fact sheet describes potential eligibility for active Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard officers, warrant officers, and enlisted Soldiers who are fully certified in a designated USCYBERCOM/ARCYBER work role and/or execute cyberspace operations in an approved unit. It also lists conditions including not being flagged. The fact sheet gives a range of $200 to $1,500 per month according to assignment, certification, and skill level. Those figures describe the CAIP program in that dated fact sheet; they are not a current Army SRB amount or a guarantee of an individual award. Confirm current implementation guidance and your status before relying on them.

CAIP therefore answers a different question from an SRB: it is assignment-related monthly pay described for eligible cyber personnel, while an SRB is a retention incentive tied to service-specific reenlistment or other service-obligation terms. Do not add the CAIP figure to an SRB estimate or assume that receiving one proves eligibility for the other. Check each program independently.

Do not treat warrant-officer examples as an open offer

An Army Human Resources Command notice for FY 2025 included 170A Cyber Warfare Technician in a limited warrant-officer program. That notice was restricted by grade, active federal service, a program cap, and other terms; it is historical evidence, not proof that the offer remains open. FY 2026 Army budget material mentions 170A and 255S as examples in an officer/warrant retention-bonus discussion. Budget planning examples are not individual authorizations. A warrant officer should obtain the current applicable policy rather than rely on either reference as an eligibility determination.

Air Force and Space Force: check the current authorized skill listing

The Air Force Personnel Center describes the SRB as a monetary incentive for active-duty Airmen and Guardians serving in selected military skills who reenlist for additional obligated service. The authorized skill listing is reviewed at least annually, so a prior-year list may no longer apply. Check the current listing and personnel-center instructions for your particular cyber specialty, reenlistment, and contract before relying on an amount or assuming that a cyber role is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also confirm the skill-service obligation. The member is expected to serve in the SRB skill for the enlistment covered by the bonus. Ask how that requirement applies to your specific contract and what the written agreement says; do not assume that a cyber assignment in general satisfies a designated-skill requirement.

The annual review is one reason to check the authorized list close to the planned reenlistment rather than depend on a screenshot, an earlier offer, or a past amount. Verify that the skill designation and instructions correspond to your own status and contract. If your specialty appears under a designation that is not an exact match, ask the personnel office to resolve that distinction before you commit.

Navy: verify both rating and NEC in the current chart

The Navy SRB is aimed at particular ratings and NECs, and award levels may change as retention requirements change. A cyber-related title or assignment alone does not establish that your rating and NEC qualify. Check the current SRB eligibility chart for the applicable combination, then have a Navy retention or career-management office verify your status and reenlistment timing against the chart.

The Navy Cyber Warfare Technician community page links to SRB and other special-pay resources, but the community page is not a replacement for the current eligibility chart or an individual record review. Do not use an old chart or another Sailor’s award as evidence that the same terms apply to you.

When you ask for a review, give the office your rating and NEC rather than describing your work only as “cyber.” Confirm which chart version applies to the proposed reenlistment and whether your status and timing meet its conditions. Since Navy award levels can change with retention needs, an amount someone received under an earlier chart is not a reliable estimate for a current offer.

How to check your eligibility before signing

  1. Write down your personnel details. Identify your service and component, grade, specialty or rating, MOS or NEC where applicable, work role, current assignment, and relevant qualification status. These details let the retention office check the right program rather than answer from the word “cyber” alone.
  2. Find the current official authority. Use the active Army SRB message, Air Force/Space Force authorized skill listing and personnel-center instructions, or Navy SRB chart that applies to you. Check the effective date and whether a newer notice supersedes it.
  3. Request a record-specific review. Ask your retention or career-management office to match your record to each criterion in the current policy. Have them check status and timing issues, including flags, service time, reenlistment window, prior-bonus restrictions, and any required specialty or assignment. Which factors apply depends on the program; this checklist is not a claim that every program uses every factor.
  4. Get the complete terms in writing. Before signing, verify the required additional service, any obligation to remain in a particular skill or unit, the amount and how it is paid, and the rules for repayment or recoupment. Do not rely on a verbal estimate where the written agreement or controlling policy says otherwise.
  5. Resolve discrepancies before committing. If the chart, your record, or the proposed agreement do not appear to match, ask the career office to explain the controlling policy and correct any record issue before signing. Keep the applicable message and agreement with your personal records.

Prepare specific questions rather than asking only whether you “qualify for cyber pay.” For example: Which current message or chart controls my case? Which entry matches my specialty or work role? Does my component and current status fall within the program? What service action and additional obligation are required? Are there record conditions or prior-bonus restrictions that affect me? Which written document sets the payment and recoupment terms?

The office’s answer should distinguish a general possibility from an approved individual determination. If a policy is accessible through a service personnel channel, use that version and ask the counselor to confirm its effective date. If a record discrepancy, flagged status, reenlistment window, or previous incentive may matter, resolve it before signing rather than assuming it can be fixed afterward.

What to compare when you receive an offer

Two offers are comparable only when the eligibility and obligation terms align. Record these items side by side, and ask the official administering the program to explain anything the written offer does not state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Service, component, and the exact eligible specialty, rating, NEC, work role, or unit.
  • Any grade, service-time, qualification, assignment, or reenlistment-window conditions.
  • Required additional service and whether you must remain in a designated skill or unit.
  • The authorized amount or calculation, payment method, effective date, and any end date for the offer.
  • Repayment or recoupment conditions and how changes in status or assignment affect the agreement.

Do not compare a monthly assignment incentive with a one-time or contract-based retention award as though they were the same benefit. The Army’s dated CAIP range, for example, is monthly cyber assignment pay; it cannot be used to estimate an Army SRB or another service’s bonus.

For a useful comparison, align both the benefit and the obligation. A larger quoted amount does not tell you whether the service commitment is longer, whether the payment is made in installments, or whether a skill or unit obligation applies. Likewise, do not treat an amount as final until the responsible office confirms the applicable policy, effective date, calculation, and payment terms for your contract.

Common eligibility mistakes

Assuming any cyber MOS, rating, or job code qualifies

Programs designate specific skills, ratings, NECs, work roles, or units. A close-sounding title, cyber-related duty, or current assignment may not match the program’s listed category. Use the exact designation in the current official guidance.

Using an old list or a budget request as proof

Retention priorities and award levels can change. An earlier FY notice can be capped or expired, while budget material may describe planning rather than an available offer. Confirm that the controlling instruction is currently effective and applies to your reenlistment date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing qualification rules with bonus authorization

DoD 8140 cyber workforce qualification rules do not themselves grant retention pay. A service program may use a work-role certification as one condition, but the bonus still requires authorization under that service’s current incentive rules.

Signing before checking the obligation and recoupment language

The payment is tied to a service commitment and may include conditions about skill, assignment, or repayment. Make sure you understand the written terms before accepting the benefit; do not assume the obligation ends at the moment the bonus is paid.

Assuming a monthly incentive and a retention bonus are the same

Army CAIP is described as monthly assignment incentive pay, while the SRB is a distinct retention program. The amount, eligibility basis, and obligation can differ. Verify the program name before comparing figures or planning around a payment.

How much is a cyber retention bonus?

There is no reliable current amount that applies across the U.S. military. Service charts and messages can set different awards for different specialties, contracts, and dates, and some details may be available only through official personnel channels. The only specific figure described here is Army CAIP’s $200-to-$1,500 monthly range in the April 10, 2024 fact sheet; it is a distinct, dated assignment incentive, not a general retention-bonus figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an actual offer, ask the service office to point to the amount or formula in the current policy and show how it applies to your case. Confirm whether the figure is conditional, how it is paid, and what service obligation accompanies it before using it for financial planning.

When comparing a quoted amount, check whether it is a maximum, a calculated award, or the amount tied to your exact contract and eligibility category. Confirm the payment method—such as a lump sum or installments—only from the governing instructions or agreement; payment details vary, and the figures cannot be safely inferred from another member’s award. Ask as well what circumstances can require repayment or recoupment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a cyber MOS, rating, assignment, or certification automatically qualify me for a retention bonus?

No. The active program must cover the relevant specialty, skill, work role, or unit, and you must meet its personal conditions. A cyber job or certification alone does not establish eligibility.

Do I have to reenlist to receive a cyber retention bonus?

A service commitment is generally part of the exchange, but the exact action depends on the program. It may require reenlistment, an extension, or a written agreement to serve for a specified period. Confirm the controlling terms before signing.

How much is the U.S. military cyber retention bonus?

There is no universal cross-service amount. The current service message, authorized skill listing, or Navy SRB chart controls the amount and eligibility. The Army’s $200-to-$1,500 monthly CAIP range in an April 10, 2024 fact sheet describes a separate assignment incentive, not a general retention bonus.

How do I find out whether my specialty is eligible?

Check the current official program list for your service: the Army SRB message, the Air Force and Space Force authorized skill listing and personnel instructions, or the Navy SRB chart for your rating and NEC. Then ask your retention or career-management office to verify your own record, status, and timing.

Can DoD 8140 qualification or a cyber certification qualify me by itself?

No. DoD 8140 workforce qualification rules do not themselves authorize a retention bonus. A service incentive may use a certification or work-role qualification as one criterion, but you must also meet the program’s current authorization and other conditions.

Is Army Cyber Assignment Incentive Pay the same as an Army SRB?

No. CAIP is a separate monthly assignment incentive described for qualifying Army cyber personnel. An SRB is a retention incentive tied to the applicable service policy and service obligation. Check each program independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I rely on a previous year’s bonus chart or another member’s award?

No. Lists, award levels, and terms can change, and a prior offer may have been limited or expired. Verify the current effective message or chart for your own reenlistment date and have an official office review your record.

The Bottom Line

To qualify, you need more than a cyber job or certification: an active service-specific incentive must cover your specialty or role, your record must satisfy its conditions, and you must accept the required additional service. Check the current official list, have your retention or career-management office verify your individual eligibility, and read the written payment and recoupment terms before signing.
