Qualify the second source against an exact memory configuration, not a product family name. Freeze the SK hynix baseline, define measurable acceptance limits, screen suppliers across technology, quality, supply, cost and ESG, test samples in the real platform, complete reliability and pilot-build gates, and release production only after contracts cover continuity, change control and traceability. A part that fits the socket or appears to have the same density is not qualified until it works with your controller, firmware, power modes, thermal limits and lifecycle obligations.

What “qualified second source” actually means

A second-source approval is a controlled supplier-change program tied to one bill of material, one memory organization and one system revision. It is not a purchasing decision based on a datasheet headline such as “DDR5,” “3D NAND” or “same capacity.” SK hynix notes that memory products differ in configuration, architecture and performance. Those differences can affect electrical margins, training, firmware behavior, thermal performance, reliability and production yield even when package dimensions look similar.

The objective is to prove that the alternate device can be built, tested and supported under the same requirements as the incumbent, or to document every approved deviation. The qualification package should let engineering, quality, operations, purchasing and the customer answer the same question: Which exact device, from which controlled lots, under which limits, is approved for which product and lifecycle?

  • DRAM: qualify the memory device or module with its organization, rank, speed bin, timing, voltage, package, ECC or parity behavior and board topology.
  • NAND: qualify the raw NAND plus controller and firmware combination, or the complete managed device, including bad-block handling, endurance, retention and power-loss behavior.
  • Both: verify manufacturing traceability, change notification, capacity commitments, corrective-action capability and end-of-life support.

Skipping this discipline can create production delays, missed deliveries, higher costs, less favorable commercial terms or product re-engineering. A supplier disclosure also warns that alternative sources may not be qualified quickly or on commercially reasonable terms when customer approval requirements are stringent and wafer lead times are long.

Freeze the incumbent baseline before contacting candidates

Start with a controlled specification for the SK hynix part currently approved. Include the exact ordering code, revision, approved manufacturing sites and any customer-specific restrictions. The baseline is the reference against which every sample, test result and deviation is judged.

DRAM baseline fields

Category Record before sampling
Capacity and organization Die density, total capacity, x4/x8/x16 organization, device width, rank count, stack or monolithic construction and module capacity.
Interface DDR generation, bus width, data rate or speed bin, command/address topology, signaling requirements and supported modes.
Timing All required timing parameters, speed-bin limits, training windows, refresh behavior and controller timing assumptions.
Power Nominal and allowable voltage, power states, peak and average current, self-refresh behavior and platform power sequencing.
Physical integration Package or module outline, ball map or pinout, footprint, height restrictions, thermal interface and assembly constraints.
Reliability and protection ECC or parity scheme, error reporting, correctable-error limits, temperature grade, retention expectations and service-life target.
System dependencies Memory-controller stepping, BIOS or bootloader assumptions, training firmware, board topology, rank mapping and approved firmware versions.
Lifecycle Required production duration, forecast profile, last-time-buy policy, approved-change process and customer notification obligations.

NAND baseline fields

Category Record before sampling
Architecture SLC, MLC, TLC or other cell type, generation, die count, plane structure, interface and package.
Integration model Raw NAND with your controller, or a managed device with an integrated controller and firmware. Do not treat these as interchangeable.
Controller and firmware Supported NAND IDs, translation layer, ECC strength, firmware revision, boot configuration, garbage collection and wear-leveling behavior.
Media management Bad-block policy, reserved blocks, over-provisioning, read-disturb handling, refresh policy and retirement thresholds.
Performance Sequential and random read/write requirements, queue-depth assumptions, sustained-write profile, latency limits and thermal throttling rules.
Endurance and retention Program/erase target, write amplification assumptions, data-retention requirement at temperature, power-cycle profile and workload mix.
Power integrity Operating voltage, peak current, brownout response, power-loss protection, flush semantics and recovery requirements.
Lifecycle Required availability period, firmware-change controls, PCN requirements, lot traceability and field-replacement policy.

Include the measurement method and pass limit for every field. “Compatible” is not a measurable acceptance criterion; “passes memory training on all approved boards at the specified speed and temperature range” is.

Build a candidate long list with a weighted scorecard

Use a cross-functional team rather than letting one department select the supplier. SK hynix describes supplier selection involving engineering, quality-control and purchasing staff, with attention to development and mass-production capability. Add operations, reliability, firmware and—where relevant—functional-safety specialists.

A practical top-level scorecard is TQSCE: Technology, Quality, Supply, Cost and ESG. A 2026 HKEX directors’ report uses this framework for supplier evaluation. Set category weights before reviewing bids so a low unit price cannot conceal an unacceptable continuity or quality risk.

Category Evidence to request What to score
Technology Process and density roadmap, package drawings, speed-bin data, controller and firmware ecosystem, interoperability references and engineering support. Exact configuration fit, margin to requirements, roadmap credibility and engineering responsiveness.
Quality Certification scope, ppm history, reliability reports, lot genealogy, process-change controls, failure-analysis capability and corrective-action records. Defect performance, traceability, containment speed and evidence that controls apply to the proposed site.
Supply Committed capacity, wafer and assembly sources, lead times, allocation policy, geographic footprint, recovery plans and financial resilience. Capacity assurance, concentration risk, recovery time and ability to support the full lifecycle.
Cost Unit price, non-recurring engineering, test fixtures, firmware work, inventory buffer, revalidation and exit costs. Total cost of ownership rather than quoted piece price.
ESG Audited environmental and labor controls, emissions and water reporting, responsible-minerals information and corrective-action process. Auditability, reporting quality and risk to customer requirements.

Require primary evidence: certificates naming the manufacturing site, recent reliability data, sample lot records, change-notification examples and references for comparable volumes. A corporate certificate that does not cover the proposed fab, assembly house or test site is not sufficient.

Use formal qualification gates

Stage gates prevent an attractive sample from bypassing documentation, reliability or production controls. SK hynix describes stage-gate development, pre-checklists and technology pre-verification; use the same principle for the second source.

Gate A: documentation and confidentiality

  1. Execute an NDA and exchange the exact baseline specification, environmental limits, forecast range and prohibited substitutions.
  2. Confirm the supplier’s legal entity, manufacturing sites, quality certifications, change-control procedure, traceability depth and failure-analysis laboratory.
  3. Obtain package drawings, electrical specifications, reliability qualification reports, product-change history and lifecycle statement.
  4. Record open questions and assign an owner and due date for each one. Do not advance a supplier with unresolved identity, site or specification gaps.

Gate B: controlled samples and genealogy

  1. Request production-intent samples, not engineering-only parts, with date codes, wafer or assembly lot numbers and certificates of conformance.
  2. Inspect package markings, dimensions, coplanarity, moisture sensitivity and incoming electrical characteristics.
  3. Sample multiple lots and, where possible, more than one manufacturing week. A single lot demonstrates neither process stability nor supply resilience.
  4. Lock sample identities in the test report. Results from an untraceable broker sample cannot support production approval.

Gate C: platform interoperability

  1. Assemble the device or module on the released board using the approved bill of materials and production-representative firmware.
  2. Run boot, memory training, reset, suspend, resume, thermal throttling, power-state and recovery scenarios.
  3. Measure voltage, current, timing, signal integrity, eye margin or equivalent interface margin, and error-correction behavior at operating corners.
  4. Test every supported controller, board spin, BIOS or bootloader revision and module population permitted by the product specification.

Gate D: reliability and failure analysis

  1. Run temperature, humidity, thermal cycling, vibration or mechanical stress as required by the product environment.
  2. For DRAM, exercise retention, refresh, error injection, repeated power transitions and sustained traffic at speed-bin limits.
  3. For NAND, run program/erase endurance, data-retention checks, read-disturb exposure, power-loss interruption, recovery and sustained-write workloads.
  4. Investigate every failure to physical root cause, document containment and verify corrective action with a repeat test.

Gate E: pilot build

  1. Use controlled deviation records for any temporary fixture, firmware setting, inspection frequency or assembly instruction.
  2. Track first-pass yield, rework, programming failures, training failures, bad-block statistics and line stoppages separately from laboratory results.
  3. Verify incoming inspection can identify the approved part and reject an unapproved revision or lot.
  4. Obtain sign-off from engineering, quality, operations, purchasing and the customer-approval authority before production release.

Gate F: production release and surveillance

  1. Publish the approved-vendor list with exact ordering codes, revisions, sites, date-code rules and permitted alternates.
  2. Set incoming sampling, electrical screens, lot traceability and escalation limits.
  3. Review field returns, corrective-action response, ppm, yield, delivery performance and PCNs at defined intervals.
  4. Requalify after a die change, package change, fab or assembly-site transfer, controller or firmware change, or any event that can alter performance or reliability.

DRAM and NAND require different technical evidence

Do not use one generic “memory compatibility” checklist. NAND manufacturing and behavior differ from DRAM. SK hynix describes NAND as substantially similar to DRAM but without the capacitor step, which changes fab-space efficiency, yield risk and turnaround characteristics. The qualification tests must reflect those different failure mechanisms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DRAM acceptance plan

  • Speed and timing margin: test every required speed bin and timing corner, not only nominal settings. Record training success rate and margin on each approved board population.
  • Signal integrity: check eye opening, termination, impedance, crosstalk and address/command integrity with the actual routing, connector and module configuration.
  • Topology and rank: verify single-rank, dual-rank or other permitted arrangements, rank mapping, interleaving and controller limits.
  • Refresh and retention: exercise refresh intervals, self-refresh exit, low-power states and retention at the specified temperature range.
  • Error handling: confirm ECC or parity detection, correction, reporting and interrupt behavior, including injected correctable and uncorrectable errors.
  • Thermal behavior: measure junction or module temperature under sustained traffic, worst-case airflow and enclosure conditions. Confirm throttling or shutdown behavior.
  • System stability: run long-duration workloads, reboot loops, sleep/resume cycles and simultaneous high-I/O activity with the rest of the product.

A “DDR5 ECC RDIMM” can be a useful physical sample description for interoperability work, but the sample is not qualified merely because it is DDR5 or ECC. Match exact speed, rank, capacity, module organization, registered-buffer behavior and platform support before drawing a conclusion.

NAND acceptance plan

  • Controller compatibility: verify NAND identification, initialization, supported command set, ECC requirements, bad-block markers and firmware tables.
  • Endurance: execute the real write mix, including small random writes, sustained sequential writes, garbage collection and over-provisioning assumptions. Report write amplification and usable capacity.
  • Retention: measure data retention after programmed wear at the required temperature and storage condition; distinguish fresh-media results from end-of-life results.
  • Read disturb: repeatedly read hot data areas and confirm that refresh, block retirement and error correction stay within limits.
  • Power-loss behavior: interrupt power during metadata updates, data programming and garbage collection. Verify atomicity, recovery time, data integrity and bad-block handling.
  • Sustained performance: run the product workload long enough to expose thermal throttling, background reclamation and performance collapse after cache exhaustion.
  • Firmware control: freeze firmware versions, configuration tables and update procedures. A NAND die change that requires a new firmware build is a controlled design change, not a drop-in substitution.

Add automotive evidence when the product is safety- or vehicle-related

Automotive qualification requires evidence beyond general commercial reliability. Request the scope and applicability of each item rather than accepting logos or undated certificates.

  • AEC-Q100: device-level automotive stress qualification for the exact component or a clearly equivalent construction.
  • IATF 16949: automotive quality-system coverage for the relevant manufacturing and support sites.
  • ASPICE: process evidence for software that affects the memory solution, including controller firmware where applicable.
  • ISO 26262: functional-safety management evidence, safety analysis and work products appropriate to the device’s role.

SK hynix identifies these frameworks in its automotive quality material and reports ASPICE Level 2 and ISO 26262 functional-safety management work for automotive NAND solutions. Your customer may impose additional item-level, traceability, change-notice or production-part-approval requirements, so map each requirement to an owner and objective evidence.

Put continuity obligations in the contract

Technical qualification does not reserve capacity. The supply agreement should convert the business continuity plan into enforceable operating rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Capacity and allocation: define forecast horizons, firm commitments, allocation priority, minimum order rules and escalation contacts.
  • Multi-year support: use a term long enough to cover the product lifecycle, with renewal and last-time-buy procedures.
  • PCN and end-of-life notice: set notice periods for die, wafer, fab, assembly, test, package, firmware, mask, process or specification changes.
  • Traceability and audit: require lot genealogy, site disclosure, retention of records, audit rights and access to failure-analysis data.
  • Geographic resilience: document site-diversification commitments and the response plan if a fab, assembly house, port or region is unavailable.
  • Recovery targets: define recovery-time objectives, priority rules during constrained supply, buffer-stock responsibilities and communication cadence.
  • Remedies: specify service credits, expedited freight, cost-sharing, alternate allocation or other remedies for missed deliveries, subject to the negotiated agreement.

SK hynix’s offering materials describe multi-year agreements and geographic diversification as tools for reducing interruption risk. Treat them as risk controls, not guarantees: capacity can still be constrained, and the alternate must remain technically qualified.

Make the approval decision on total cost and risk

Compare the cost of qualification with the expected impact of an outage. Include engineering hours, sockets or fixtures, board spins, firmware changes, validation laboratories, pilot scrap, inventory buffers, yield learning, customer reapproval and future requalification. Compare that total with the cost of a line stoppage, missed delivery, expedited logistics, redesign and lost contract terms.

Cost or risk item Questions for the decision team
Qualification engineering How many boards, firmware branches, test conditions and customer approvals are required?
Manufacturing impact Will programming, assembly, inspection, yield or test time change?
Inventory and working capital What safety stock, dual inventory or last-time-buy quantity is needed?
Supply exposure What capacity is committed, how concentrated are sites, and how quickly can supply recover?
Exit and revalidation What happens if the alternate changes die, firmware, package, site or commercial terms?
Customer and safety obligations Which approvals, production-part submissions or safety work products must be repeated?

Approve the alternate only when the residual risk is acceptable to the product owner and the commercial controls are signed. If the candidate passes laboratory tests but cannot commit capacity, it is a technically promising source, not a continuity source.

Common failure modes and recovery actions

The part is “pin-compatible” but the system will not boot

Check organization, rank mapping, training firmware, timing tables, voltage sequencing, termination and board topology. Re-run initialization on every approved controller and board revision. Do not mask the problem with a relaxed setting unless that setting is documented, tested and approved for production.

Samples pass, but pilot yield falls

Separate supplier-lot variation from assembly, socket, programming and tester effects. Use genealogy to correlate failures with wafer, assembly and date code; increase incoming sampling temporarily; and require a corrective-action report with verified containment before release.

NAND performance collapses after extended writes

Measure cache exhaustion, garbage-collection activity, thermal throttling, over-provisioning and write amplification under the real workload. Confirm that firmware recognizes the exact NAND and that sustained-performance limits, not short benchmark bursts, are in the product requirement.

Retention or read-disturb failures appear late

Repeat testing at the specified wear level and temperature, inspect ECC margin and block-retirement thresholds, and verify refresh and data-scrubbing policies. A fresh-media retention result is not evidence of end-of-life retention.

The supplier changes a site or die after approval

Stop automatic substitution. Trigger the PCN workflow, identify the affected lots and customers, assess delta risk, and repeat the applicable electrical, firmware, reliability and pilot gates. Update the approved-vendor list only after sign-off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A second source is qualified but cannot deliver

Review forecast accuracy, allocation language, committed capacity, geographic dependencies and recovery obligations. If the contract has no enforceable reservation or escalation path, treat the gap as a commercial qualification failure and negotiate before relying on the source.

Keep the qualification package auditable

Store one controlled record for each approved configuration. It should contain the baseline specification, deviation log, supplier scorecard, certificates, sample genealogy, test plans, raw data, failure analyses, pilot-build results, customer approvals, contract references, PCNs and requalification history.

Link every pass or fail to a requirement identifier and test condition. Record instrument calibration, firmware revision, board revision, temperature, voltage, workload and sample lot. This level of detail allows a future engineer to distinguish a genuine supplier capability from a result produced by a special laboratory setup.

Review the source periodically using the same TQSCE categories. Track delivery performance, incoming defects, corrective-action cycle time, field returns, PCNs, capacity changes, financial or geographic exposure and roadmap progress. Requalification is an ongoing control, not a one-time certificate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
