Roku’s documented way to display personal photos on a television is Backdrops. Open Backdrops on the Roku device, choose Add your photos and Upload photos, scan the QR code with a phone or tablet, then finish the upload at backdrops.roku.com. Roku lists JPG, PNG, HEIC and WEBP support. You can display one still image, rotate an album, or use Roku’s separate Themes controls for built-in interface artwork. An uploaded Backdrops photo is not documented as a replacement for the Roku home-screen wallpaper.
What “Roku wallpaper” can mean
Roku uses several different customization features, and choosing the wrong one is the main reason instructions for “custom wallpaper” seem contradictory. Personal photos are handled by Backdrops. The Roku interface itself is changed with Themes. A screensaver is an idle-state application with its own settings.
| What you want to change | Roku feature | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Show your own photographs as art on the TV | Backdrops | Uploads photos through a Roku account and displays a selected image or album. |
| Change the home-screen look, background art or navigation sounds | Themes | Applies Roku-provided theme packs or individual wallpaper, screensaver and sound choices. |
| Show moving or changing artwork while the Roku is not being used | Screensaver | Runs a screensaver application after the configured idle wait time. |
Roku’s instructions do not say that a photo uploaded to Backdrops becomes the home-screen interface wallpaper. Treat Backdrops as a full-screen photo display and Themes as the interface customization system. If you want a family photograph visible while you are actively viewing it, use Backdrops. If you want Roku menus to have a different background, use Themes instead.

Quick decision guide
- One personal image: Upload it to Backdrops, select the individual photo and set Image Duration > Don’t Change.
- A rotating set of personal images: Put the photos in an album, select that album in Backdrops and start the display.
- Roku-provided menu artwork: Open Settings and choose Themes or Theme, then select a theme pack or an individual wallpaper.
- Artwork that appears after inactivity: Configure the Screensaver under Theme settings and adjust its wait time.
These choices are separate. Uploading a photo does not, according to Roku’s documented instructions, add that photo to the built-in wallpaper catalog or automatically replace the screensaver.

What you need before uploading
- A Roku streaming device or Roku TV with the Backdrops app available.
- A Roku account signed in to the device and available for the web upload flow.
- A phone or another mobile device capable of scanning a QR code and selecting image files.
- Photos saved as JPG, PNG, HEIC or WEBP. These are the formats listed by Roku Support.
The phone or tablet is used for the browser-based upload. Roku does not require a particular phone brand, a special cable, a USB drive or another accessory in the documented process. You start on the television, scan the code, and choose files on the mobile device.
Roku’s support pages do not specify a minimum Roku OS version, a universal list of supported models, recommended pixel dimensions, an aspect-ratio rule, a per-file upload-size limit or an exact cropping behavior for mismatched images. Do not rely on an internet “ideal resolution” unless Roku shows a requirement for your device. Upload a supported file, preview it on the television and adjust the original image if the composition does not look right.
Roku Support describes Backdrops as “completely free.” Availability and menu wording can vary with device, software presentation and region, so a menu may not look exactly like another Roku user’s screen.
Enable or find Backdrops on the Roku
Backdrops may already appear among the apps on your Roku. If you cannot find it, Roku’s support instructions provide two routes:
- Open Settings on the Roku device.
- Choose Home Screen Menu.
- Enable Backdrops if it is turned off or hidden.
If that menu does not show Backdrops, look for it in the Roku Streaming Store. Use the on-screen search if it is not visible in the first location. The absence of a tile on the home screen does not by itself establish that your device cannot use the feature; check both locations and follow the menus presented on your Roku.
Once enabled, launch Backdrops from the Roku home screen. You can return to it whenever you want to select a different photo or album. The app is the place where personal images are managed and displayed; the separate Theme menu is not an upload destination.
Upload personal photos with the QR code
The upload is started on the television but completed in a browser on a mobile device. Keep the Roku screen visible while you follow these steps.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Launch Backdrops on the Roku.
- Select Add your photos.
- Choose Upload photos. Backdrops displays a QR code.
- Scan the QR code with your phone or another mobile device.
- Follow the page instructions, sign in when requested, and select the photos you want to upload.
- Complete the upload at backdrops.roku.com.
- Return to Backdrops on the television and wait for the uploaded photos to appear in the available album or photo list.
The QR code connects the television’s Backdrops session with the Roku account web flow. It is not a requirement to install a separate photo-transfer utility, and Roku’s instructions do not include USB importing as an alternative to this process.
When selecting files, use the copies you actually want displayed. If a phone has both an original and an edited version, identify the intended file before uploading so the album remains organized. If you need to correct framing later, make a revised copy and upload that version rather than assuming the Roku interface provides a crop editor.

A browser upload does not change the distinction between a personal photo and a Roku interface wallpaper. The result is stored in Backdrops for display through that app. To alter the menu background, finish the photo upload and then separately visit Theme settings.
Organize photos into albums
Backdrops uses albums to group the images you want to display. You can create a practical set for a particular room, season or occasion, then select that album on the TV. Roku’s documented limits are up to 10 albums per Backdrops account and up to 100 photos in an album, subject to the Roku account’s storage limit.
Those limits make it useful to decide how to divide a large library before uploading. For example, a 100-photo album can be uploaded in five batches of 20, while two 50-photo albums still use the same total number of image slots but let you choose between two collections. The exact choice is yours; Roku documents selecting one album at a time, not combining every album into one automatic slideshow.
If you reach the album or account limit, remove or reorganize existing content before trying to add more. Roku does not publish a separate universal file-size figure in the cited instructions, so do not calculate capacity from an assumed megabyte allowance. The documented constraints are the number of albums, photos per album, upload batch size and the account’s own storage limit.
Display one photo or rotate an album
Keep one still image on screen
- In Backdrops, open the album or photo collection containing the image.
- Select the individual photo you want to show.
- Start Backdrops using the on-screen control.
- Open the image-duration setting and choose Don’t Change.
With Image Duration > Don’t Change, Roku’s instructions specify that the selected image remains displayed instead of advancing through the collection. This is the setting to use for a single portrait, family picture, piece of artwork or other still image you want to leave in view.
Show an album or collection
- Open Backdrops.
- Select the album or collection rather than a single image.
- Start Backdrops.
- Leave the image-duration setting at the rotation behavior you prefer, rather than choosing Don’t Change if you want multiple images to appear.
Roku documents showing one album at a time. If you have several albums, select the one you want before starting Backdrops; the support instructions do not describe a combined slideshow across every album. To change the selection, stop or leave the current display, open Backdrops again and choose another album or image.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Backdrops storage and upload limits
Roku Support lists the following product limits for a Backdrops account. They are account limits, not measurements of image quality or television performance.
| Limit | Roku’s documented figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Albums per Backdrops account | Up to 10 | Subject to the Roku account’s storage limit. |
| Photos in one album | Up to 100 | Also subject to the account’s storage limit. |
| Photos uploaded at one time | 20 | Upload larger collections in multiple batches. |
| Supported image formats | JPG, PNG, HEIC and WEBP | These are the formats listed in Roku’s support instructions. |
If an upload contains more than 20 photos, split it into batches of 20 or fewer. A full 100-photo album therefore requires at least five upload sessions if each session contains 20 files. That arithmetic does not change the account’s storage limit or guarantee that every file will be accepted; each file still needs to be in a listed format.
When planning multiple albums, remember that the 10-album figure applies to the account, not just to one television. Likewise, the 100-photo figure applies to an individual album. If a second Roku device uses the same account, follow the albums and account capacity shown by Roku rather than assuming each device receives a separate allowance.

Change Roku’s built-in interface wallpaper instead
If your goal is to change the artwork behind Roku menus rather than display personal photographs, use Themes:

- Choose Themes or Theme; the label can vary by software presentation and locale.
- Select a theme pack, or browse the individual Wallpapers, Screensavers and Navigation sounds sections.
- Apply the option you want and return to the Roku home screen to see the change.
Roku describes a theme pack as a bundle containing a background image, a screensaver and navigation sounds. You can apply the complete pack or select individual choices where the menus provide them. Separate controls are also available for seasonal wallpapers and sponsored wallpapers. These are Roku-provided interface settings, not uploaded Backdrops images.
Consequently, a custom family photograph cannot be assumed to appear behind the tile grid simply because it was uploaded successfully. Backdrops and Themes serve different outcomes: one displays your selected art, while the other changes Roku’s supplied interface elements.
Why a screensaver is not the same as a wallpaper
Roku defines a screensaver as an application that fills the screen when the player or TV is not in use. Screensavers are selected under Theme settings and have their own wait-time setting. A Backdrops photo can be shown as art, but choosing a photo in Backdrops and changing the screensaver are separate actions.
Use Backdrops when you want to deliberately start a personal photo display. Use the Screensaver controls when you want Roku to launch artwork automatically after inactivity. Changing one does not automatically configure the other. If your goal is a personal image during idle time, first verify what your Roku presents under Screensaver; the documented Backdrops instructions do not state that an uploaded image is automatically added to that list.
What happened to Photo Streams?
Roku says, “Photo Streams has become Backdrops.” If you used Photo Streams previously, Roku says your existing photos are already available in Backdrops and do not need to be uploaded again. Open Backdrops and look for the existing album rather than starting a duplicate upload.
This change explains why older directions may refer to a Photo Streams app that you no longer see. The current route for those personal images is Backdrops. If an old collection does not appear immediately, inspect the available albums in Backdrops before uploading copies from your phone; Roku’s statement is that existing photos are already available there.
Image preparation without unsupported specifications
Roku’s cited instructions identify file formats but do not publish a required resolution, aspect ratio or crop rule. You can still reduce surprises by preparing images thoughtfully:
- Export the final file as JPG, PNG, HEIC or WEBP.
- Keep the main subject away from extreme edges if the television preview cuts off part of the composition.
- Use a copy of the original when experimenting so you can revise the framing without losing the source file.
- Preview the result on the actual Roku television. A phone or computer preview cannot establish how a particular Roku device will fit the image.
These are practical preparation steps, not Roku-published dimensions. If an image looks cropped or letterboxed, adjust the image itself and upload the revised file; the available support instructions do not specify a Roku-side crop control. Do not label a particular pixel count as “required” or “official” when Roku has not published one.
Recommended Free Tools
Similarly, do not convert every image to a single format just because a third-party guide recommends it. JPG, PNG, HEIC and WEBP are all listed by Roku. Conversion is useful only when the original file is outside those four formats or when you are making a revised crop.

Troubleshooting common problems
Backdrops is missing
Check Settings > Home Screen Menu > Backdrops and enable it. If it is not listed there, find Backdrops in the Streaming Store. Menu names and availability can vary by device, software and region. Do not substitute the Theme menu for Backdrops when your goal is to upload personal photos.
The QR code will not scan
- Keep the entire QR code visible on the television.
- Use the phone’s standard camera or QR scanner and open the resulting Roku link.
- If the code is out of focus, move the phone farther away and let the camera refocus.
- Complete the sign-in and upload in the browser page opened by the code, rather than trying to select files on the Roku remote.
If the mobile browser opens a page but the upload controls are not visible, confirm that you followed the link from the current Backdrops screen and that you are using the Roku account associated with the device. The documented process is account-based, so selecting files in an unrelated browser tab does not complete the television session.
The file is rejected
Confirm that the file is JPG, PNG, HEIC or WEBP. If it is another format, export a copy in one of Roku’s listed formats and try again. Do not infer that a file is supported merely because a phone can display it. A phone’s gallery may open formats that Roku does not list for Backdrops.
Only some photos uploaded
Roku documents a 20-photo upload batch limit. Upload the remainder in another batch. Also check whether the destination album has reached 100 photos or whether the account has reached 10 albums, subject to its storage limit. Counting the files in each batch helps distinguish a batch-size issue from an account-capacity issue.
The image changes when you want it to stay still
Select the individual image and set Image Duration to Don’t Change before starting Backdrops. Starting an album or collection instead will use its rotation behavior. If the display still changes, return to the photo selection and confirm that you started the individual image rather than the parent album.
My old Photo Streams are missing
Open Backdrops and inspect the available albums. Roku says Photo Streams moved to Backdrops and that existing photos are already available there. Uploading them again can create unnecessary duplicates. Look through the existing Backdrops content before using the QR upload flow for older pictures.
The photo does not fill the screen as expected
Roku’s cited support material does not state a universal aspect-ratio or cropping rule. Preview the image on your television, then create a revised crop or canvas in an image editor and upload that version. Avoid treating an unofficial resolution recommendation as a Roku requirement. Because behavior can vary with the device and software presentation, the TV preview is the useful test for your setup.
The menu changed, but my photo did not appear as wallpaper
That result is consistent with Roku’s feature separation. Themes controls change Roku-provided interface artwork; Backdrops displays uploaded personal photos. Return to Backdrops to start the personal image, or return to Settings > Themes/Theme if you want to choose a built-in wallpaper, screensaver or navigation-sound option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the right Roku customization
| Your outcome | Use this | Key setting or action |
|---|---|---|
| Display one family photo continuously | Backdrops | Select the photo, start Backdrops, set Image Duration to Don’t Change. |
| Cycle through vacation photos | Backdrops | Select an album or collection and start Backdrops. |
| Change menu background art | Themes | Settings > Themes/Theme, then choose a theme pack or Wallpaper. |
| Change what appears after inactivity | Screensaver | Choose a screensaver under Theme settings and set its wait time. |
| Reuse photographs previously stored in Photo Streams | Backdrops | Open Backdrops; Roku says the existing photos are already there. |
The comparison is about the desired outcome, not about file quality. Backdrops is the personal-photo path; Themes is the Roku-interface path; Screensaver is the idle-state path. Keeping those categories separate prevents you from repeatedly uploading a photo when the setting you actually want is a built-in wallpaper or screensaver.

What Roku does and does not document
The documented workflow establishes the upload route, supported formats, account limits and display controls. It does not establish a single minimum OS version, model-by-model compatibility list, recommended pixel dimensions, aspect-ratio requirements, upload-size limits or guaranteed cropping behavior. Those details can vary with the device and software presentation. Follow the Backdrops prompts shown on your Roku and verify the result on the television rather than applying a specification that Roku has not published.
There is also no documented requirement to buy a special product to create this setup. A Roku device, a Roku account, a mobile device for the QR-linked browser flow and an image in a listed format are the components described by Roku. USB storage and a separate transfer utility are not part of the cited workflow.
