To use your own router with an ISP gateway, first confirm the exact gateway model, hardware revision, service type, and the provider’s supported method. Enable the provider’s bridge-mode or IP-passthrough setting, connect the gateway’s specified Ethernet port to your router’s WAN port, and put your router in normal router mode. The labels and side effects vary by ISP and model, so there is no safe universal menu path.

What bridge mode does

An ISP gateway usually combines two jobs: it provides access to the ISP’s network (through cable, DSL, fiber, or fixed wireless hardware) and it routes traffic around your home. Routing includes assigning local IP addresses, translating private addresses with NAT, enforcing firewall rules, and usually providing Wi-Fi.

Bridge mode turns off some or all of that routing role so a separate router can perform it. Your personal router then becomes the device that creates the home network, provides Wi-Fi, assigns addresses, and manages features such as parental controls or VPN settings. The gateway may continue acting as the ISP access device, but exactly which functions remain depends on the provider and hardware.

TP-Link describes the purpose this way: “If you have a DSL modem router and a second router, to avoid double NAT, you can switch the modem router into Bridge mode.” Double NAT occurs when both the gateway and your router translate and route the same home traffic. Avoiding it can simplify inbound connections, port forwarding, online gaming, remote access, and some VPN arrangements.

Bridge mode is not a guaranteed speed, latency, security, or Wi-Fi-range upgrade. The available documentation does not establish a measured performance improvement. Use it when you need your own router to control the network or when the two-router arrangement is causing a specific routing problem.

Bridge mode, IP passthrough, and ordinary router mode

Conventional bridge mode

In a conventional bridge configuration, the gateway stops performing most home-router functions and passes the ISP connection to the device on its designated Ethernet port. Your router normally receives the public connection or the ISP-facing address and handles NAT, DHCP, firewalling, and Wi-Fi.

IP passthrough

Some providers use “IP passthrough” instead of “bridge mode.” The label alone does not prove that the behavior is identical. A gateway may pass an address to one connected device while retaining selected management, voice, television, cellular, or other provider functions. Read the instructions for the exact gateway and firmware.

Keeping both devices as routers

If the ISP gateway remains in router mode and your personal router also routes, devices behind your router are commonly behind double NAT. This setup can still provide internet access, but port forwarding and peer-to-peer applications may require rules on both devices. It is a deliberate alternative, not the same as bridge mode.

Check compatibility before changing anything

Identify the service and hardware

Find the ISP name, gateway model, hardware revision, and firmware version on the device label or administration page. Record whether the service is cable, DSL, fiber, or fixed wireless. A procedure for a DSL modem-router cannot be assumed to work on a cable or fiber gateway, even when the screens use similar words.

  • Write down the exact model and revision, including suffixes such as a hardware version.
  • Record which Ethernet ports are labeled LAN, Internet, WAN, or with provider-specific names.
  • Check whether the gateway also supplies telephone service, television, security monitoring, or other managed features.
  • Locate the ISP’s current bridge-mode or IP-passthrough article for that model and firmware.

Confirm the ISP’s supported method

Some providers expose a bridge-mode switch; others provide IP passthrough, a modem-only profile, or no customer-accessible option. If the setting is absent, greyed out, or locked, ask the ISP whether it can be enabled remotely or whether the gateway must be replaced. Do not improvise with a guessed VLAN, login, or port.

Check what will be disabled

Before enabling the mode, read the provider’s warnings about Wi-Fi radios, LAN ports, guest networks, voice service, television, management access, and automatic updates. The effects are not universal. For example, Verizon’s Internet Gateway documentation says its Wi-Fi radios turn off when IP Passthrough is enabled. A different gateway may leave Wi-Fi on, disable only some bands, or retain a separate provider network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the current configuration

Save screenshots or notes of the gateway’s current settings and any ISP-supplied connection details. Include the previous Wi-Fi name and password, LAN subnet, DHCP reservations, port-forwarding rules, DNS choices, and service credentials if the provider supplied them. This makes reversal easier and prevents you from guessing after a failed change.

What your own router must support

Required hardware and mode

  • An Ethernet WAN or Internet port that can accept the gateway connection.
  • A normal router mode; do not select access-point mode unless you intentionally want the gateway to remain the router.
  • Enough wired ports and wireless capacity for the household’s devices and coverage area.
  • Support for the ISP’s required connection method, such as automatic addressing, PPPoE credentials, or VLAN tagging.

A wireless router is the direct equipment category for this setup. Choose one compatible with your service, with an Ethernet WAN port and capacity appropriate to your coverage and number of devices. No particular model is required for bridge mode, and the documented material does not establish a performance ranking among models.

Connection details that may be required

Many cable connections use automatic addressing, but a DSL, fiber, or fixed-wireless service may require PPPoE credentials, a VLAN ID, a service profile, or another parameter. Obtain these values from the ISP. Never copy a VLAN ID from an unrelated guide or another customer’s setup.

Generic installation procedure

Use this sequence only as a framework. Replace the menu names and port choice with the exact instructions for your gateway.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare both devices. Keep the ISP gateway, personal router, an Ethernet cable, and the gateway’s recovery instructions nearby. If possible, perform the change while you can contact ISP support.
  2. Connect to the gateway’s administration page. Use a wired computer connection when practical. Sign in with the gateway’s current administrator credentials and verify the model and firmware shown on the status page.
  3. Open the provider-supported setting. Look for Bridge Mode, IP Passthrough, modem-only mode, or the exact term used in the ISP’s instructions. Do not select a similarly named option from a different device family.
  4. Enter only documented connection values. If the provider requires a VLAN ID, PPPoE username and password, or another value, enter the value supplied for your service. Leave unrelated fields unchanged.
  5. Apply the change and wait. The gateway may restart and briefly disconnect the internet. Do not unplug it during a firmware or configuration restart.
  6. Use the specified Ethernet port. Run an Ethernet cable from the port named by the provider to the personal router’s WAN or Internet port. Port selection can be mandatory; Verizon’s documented Internet Gateway procedure specifically uses LAN2.
  7. Set the personal router to router mode. In its setup wizard, choose the ISP-required connection type, enter any required credentials or VLAN information, and allow it to create a new private LAN. NETGEAR’s guidance for this arrangement calls for installing its router in router mode after bridge mode is enabled on the ISP gateway.
  8. Move client devices. Connect computers, phones, televisions, and other household equipment to the personal router’s Wi-Fi or LAN ports, not to the gateway’s network, unless the provider explicitly supports both.
  9. Test the complete path. Confirm that the personal router reports an internet connection, a wired client can browse, a wireless client can browse, and the household’s required provider services still operate.

TP-Link DSL modem-router: VX220-G2v and VX420-G2 variants

TP-Link’s support procedure dated April 18, 2025 applies to the listed VX220-G2v and VX420-G2 variants. In the gateway web interface, open the DSL WAN or DSL settings, create or edit the internet connection, select Bridge, enter a VLAN ID if the ISP requires one, and save. Verify the hardware revision before following those steps; the screen layout and available fields can differ by revision and provider.

Verizon Internet Gateway: IP Passthrough through LAN2

Verizon’s guide dated September 29, 2026 describes a specific Internet Gateway. In its Network Connections settings, enable IP Passthrough and wait for the gateway to restart. Verizon says that enabling passthrough turns off the gateway’s Wi-Fi radios. After the restart, connect the personal router’s WAN port to LAN2 on the Verizon gateway by Ethernet.

These steps apply to the Internet Gateway described in Verizon’s guide, not automatically to every Verizon device or service. Use the model-specific instructions if your gateway has a different name or interface.

Motorola cable gateways

Motorola documents bridge-mode procedures for the cable gateway models covered by its support article. Follow the section matching your exact model. Motorola also notes that some modem-only MB models are already bridge modems and do not need a bridge-mode toggle. For supported gateway models, a provider reset or software update can restore combined modem-router mode, so recheck the gateway if your personal router unexpectedly starts receiving a private address again.

NETGEAR or Orbi router after bridging

NETGEAR’s installation guidance treats the ISP gateway as the bridged device and the NETGEAR or Orbi unit as the active router. Select router mode during installation, connect the gateway’s specified Ethernet port to the router’s WAN port, and use the new router’s network for household clients. The exact wizard screens depend on the NETGEAR model and firmware.

Port, address, and Wi-Fi checks after setup

Confirm the cable path

The cable should run from the gateway port named by the ISP to the personal router’s WAN or Internet port. A cable plugged into one of the router’s LAN ports can turn the unit into an unintended access point or leave it without a usable WAN connection. A cable plugged into the wrong gateway port may provide no service even when bridge mode is enabled.

Check the personal router’s WAN address

Open the personal router’s status page and inspect its WAN address and connection state. The address may be public or may be an ISP-managed address, depending on the service. The important test is whether the router has a valid upstream connection and whether clients receive private addresses from the personal router’s LAN.

Do not assume that the old gateway administration address remains reachable. Some bridged configurations remove or change local management access. Keep the provider’s documented reversal process available instead of relying on an unverified address.

Use one home DHCP and Wi-Fi system

Once the personal router is active, use its Wi-Fi name, password, DHCP reservations, DNS settings, and port-forwarding controls. If the gateway’s Wi-Fi remains enabled and you do not need it, disabling it can reduce confusion about which network a device joined; do so only if the provider’s instructions permit it and do not require that radio for a managed service.

Troubleshooting branches

The router has no internet connection

  • Check that the gateway completed its restart and that the Ethernet link lights are active.
  • Move the cable to the exact gateway port named by the ISP; Verizon’s example requires LAN2.
  • Confirm that the personal router is in router mode and that its WAN type matches the ISP requirement.
  • Re-enter documented PPPoE credentials or VLAN information if the service requires them.
  • Power-cycle in order: turn off the personal router, restart the gateway, wait for the gateway’s service lights to stabilize, then start the personal router.
  • If the option was remotely disabled or the gateway reverted, contact the ISP rather than changing unrelated settings.

The personal router receives a private address

A private WAN address can mean that passthrough is not active, the wrong gateway port is being used, the ISP intentionally provides an upstream private network, or another router remains in the path. Check the gateway’s status and the provider’s definition of passthrough. Do not conclude from the address alone that the setup is broken.

Some provider services stopped working

Bridge mode or passthrough may disable gateway Wi-Fi, voice, television features, guest networks, or provider management. Compare the observed change with the ISP’s model-specific warning. If a service is required and unsupported in bridge mode, ask the provider whether it supports a compatible topology or a different gateway profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot reach the gateway settings

Loss of gateway management access can be normal in a bridged configuration. Try the provider’s documented management method from a directly connected computer only if its instructions specify one. Otherwise use the documented reversal or reset procedure, bearing in mind that a reset can erase custom settings.

The gateway returned to router mode later

Motorola warns that a provider reset or update can restore combined mode on the gateway models covered by its article. Recheck the gateway after maintenance, outages, or firmware changes. If the behavior repeats, ask the ISP whether bridge mode is persistent for your account or whether it must be re-enabled by support.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When bridge mode is the right choice

Choose it when you need one authoritative home router

  • You want your own router to control firewall rules, DNS, parental controls, VPN features, or wireless settings.
  • Double NAT is interfering with port forwarding, remote access, gaming, or a site-to-site VPN.
  • Your provider confirms that the gateway and service support bridge mode or passthrough.

Keep the gateway routing when provider features matter more

  • The provider requires gateway routing for voice, television, security, or support diagnostics.
  • The ISP does not document a supported bridge or passthrough method for your exact model.
  • You only need better Wi-Fi coverage; adding an access point or mesh node in a supported mode may solve that without changing the gateway’s routing role.

Use access-point mode deliberately

Putting your personal device in access-point mode leaves the ISP gateway as the router and avoids a second NAT layer. It is simpler when the ISP requires gateway routing, but the personal device will not be the network’s main DHCP, firewall, or port-forwarding authority. Select this arrangement knowingly rather than because the WAN connection failed.

What changes in a bridged home network

Function Before: gateway routing After: personal router active
Local IP addresses The ISP gateway normally assigns them. The personal router normally assigns them.
NAT and firewall rules The gateway normally performs them. The personal router normally performs them.
Household Wi-Fi Usually provided by the gateway. Provided by the personal router; the gateway’s radios may be disabled.
Port forwarding Configured on the gateway. Configured on the personal router, subject to the ISP’s upstream behavior.
Ethernet handoff Clients can use the gateway’s LAN ports. The provider-designated gateway port feeds the personal router’s WAN port.

The table describes the usual division of responsibility, not a promise that every gateway disables every function. Provider documentation controls when it differs.

Safety and recovery checklist

  • Keep the gateway model, revision, ISP account details, and support number available.
  • Record the original Wi-Fi and LAN settings before enabling bridge mode.
  • Save any ISP connection credentials and verified VLAN value; never infer them.
  • Know which gateway port the provider specifies before moving the cable.
  • Make sure the personal router is configured for router mode, not access-point mode.
  • Test both wired and wireless clients and any provider-managed services you need.
  • If the change fails, reverse it using the provider’s documented procedure or contact support. A factory reset should be a last resort because it can erase ISP-specific settings.

Answers to common questions

How do I put my ISP router in bridge mode?

Identify the exact gateway and ISP procedure, then enable the documented Bridge Mode, IP Passthrough, or equivalent setting. The menu path is model-specific; there is no universal sequence.

How do I use my own router?

After the gateway’s supported mode is active, connect its specified Ethernet port to your router’s WAN port, configure the router with the ISP-required connection details, select router mode, and connect household devices to the personal router.

Is IP passthrough the same as bridge mode?

It can provide a similar handoff, but not necessarily identical behavior. Some gateways retain selected routing or provider functions, so follow the exact device documentation.

Will bridge mode improve my speed?

No measured speed, latency, security, or coverage improvement is established by the cited setup guidance. Bridge mode’s practical purpose is to let your router control the network and avoid routing conflicts such as double NAT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my Wi-Fi disappear?

The provider may intentionally disable the gateway’s Wi-Fi when bridge mode or passthrough is enabled. Verizon explicitly documents this behavior for its Internet Gateway. Use the personal router’s Wi-Fi unless the provider requires a gateway radio for a managed service.

Can I switch back?

Usually you can use the provider’s reversal procedure to restore gateway routing, but the exact steps vary. Keep your original settings and do not assume the gateway’s old administration address will remain available while bridged.
