Whether you can switch a laptop into tablet mode depends on its Windows version and hardware. In Windows 11, there is no manual tablet-mode switch: a compatible touchscreen 2-in-1 changes behavior when you fold it into tablet form or detach its keyboard. In Windows 10, select the Tablet mode tile in Action Center. A standard laptop without touchscreen and tablet-form support cannot be converted by changing a setting.
Check whether your laptop supports tablet mode
Tablet mode is designed for touch-capable screens on tablets and 2-in-1 PCs. Your laptop needs both a touchscreen and a design that can be used as a tablet, such as a convertible hinge or detachable keyboard. If it has a conventional keyboard and no touchscreen, Windows cannot add tablet functionality through a setting.

Use tablet mode in Windows 11
Windows 11 does not include a manual tablet-mode switch in Settings or Quick Settings. Microsoft says Windows detects the device’s physical state and adjusts automatically: tablet behavior begins when it detects a keyboard has been detached or the device has been converted to tablet form, and ends when a keyboard is attached or the device returns to laptop form. See Microsoft’s tablet mode instructions.

- Adjust the taskbar if needed. Right-click or press and hold the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, and expand Taskbar behaviors. Turn on Optimize taskbar for touch interactions when this device is used as a tablet if the option is available. Microsoft says this setting is limited to 2-in-1 devices with tablet functionality. More details are in Microsoft’s touchscreen guidance.
Turn on Tablet mode in Windows 10
In Windows 10, the manual control is a Quick action in Action Center.
- Select the Action Center icon near the taskbar clock.
- Select the Tablet mode tile. If you do not see it, select Expand above the Quick actions to show more tiles.
- If the tile is missing from the expanded list, open Settings > System > Notifications & actions > Edit your quick actions > Add > Tablet mode.
If Tablet mode is not available to add, Microsoft says Windows may not be detecting the device as touch-capable. The setting cannot make a non-touch laptop behave like a tablet.

Use the touch keyboard separately
Tablet mode and the touch keyboard are separate controls. If you need an on-screen keyboard, use the touch keyboard icon on the taskbar. Windows provides visibility choices including Never, Always, and When no keyboard attached; it also has a setting for showing the touch keyboard in tablet mode when no keyboard is attached. The exact settings labels can vary by Windows version, so follow Microsoft’s instructions for your version.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, and security fixes stopped, according to Microsoft’s Windows support information. The Action Center steps above describe how the feature works; they do not change the operating system’s support status.
