Use Joomla’s built-in Site Offline switch for a temporary maintenance window. In the Administrator back end, open Home Dashboard → Global Configuration → Site, set Site Offline to Yes, choose the message behavior, and save. Visitors will receive Joomla’s offline page while authorized administrators can continue working. When the work is complete, return to the same setting, choose No, and save again.
What Joomla’s offline mode actually does
Joomla’s Site Offline setting is a frontend maintenance control. When it is enabled, normal visitors do not see the live site; they see an offline message page that includes a login form. The Joomla User Manual describes the behavior this way: “When set to Yes all site visitors see an offline message page with login form.”
The switch does not shut down the Joomla Administrator interface. Joomla also states: “The Site Offline switch does not apply to the administrator interface and users who can login to the backend can continue to login to the frontend.” In practice, this means you can still sign in to the back end, change configuration, and—if permissions allow—open the frontend while it is offline.
Frontend access for staff is permission-based. Joomla 4.x labels the relevant permission Offline Access. Before maintenance, confirm that the user group you intend to use for testing has that permission. A back-end administrator account and an ordinary public browser session are not equivalent tests: the administrator may see the site while an anonymous visitor sees the offline page.

When the built-in switch is the right choice
Use Joomla’s offline mode for relatively minor, short-lived changes where the existing production installation remains the site you are editing. Typical examples include applying a small configuration change, updating content, or completing a brief extension or template adjustment.
It is a reversible application-level setting: turn it on for the work, then turn it off after you have verified the result. It also lets you present a controlled message rather than exposing visitors to a partially changed page.
Do not treat the switch as a substitute for a development environment when the work is extensive. Joomla documentation recommends a development server or subdomain for complex changes and testing. Major extension upgrades, database migrations, and broad template rewrites should be built and checked on a clone first, then moved to production during a planned cutover.
Prepare before taking the site offline
A few checks prevent the most common maintenance mistakes.
- Confirm back-end access: sign in to the Administrator interface and verify that your account can reach Global Configuration.
- Decide who needs frontend access: identify the user group that will test the site and confirm its Offline Access permission.
- Choose the visitor message: decide whether to show Joomla’s default text, a custom status message, or no message text.
- Prepare an image only if it helps: Joomla permits an optional offline image. Use a lightweight file and check that it remains legible on a phone.
- Define the maintenance window: write down the change sequence, the checks you will perform, and the person responsible for switching the site back online.
- Back up before consequential work: especially for extension upgrades, database changes, or template work. Offline mode prevents visitors from seeing an in-progress site; it does not undo a failed change.
Step-by-step: put a Joomla site offline
- Sign in to the Joomla Administrator back end. Use the administrator URL and an account that has permission to change global configuration.
- Open Global Configuration. From the Home Dashboard, select Global Configuration. Older Joomla documentation may show the route as System → Global Configuration; the destination is the same configuration screen.
- Open the Site tab. The offline control is part of the site-wide settings, not an individual menu item or article.
- Set Site Offline to Yes. This enables the maintenance response for frontend visitors.
- Choose the offline-message behavior. Select Use Custom Message, Use Site Language Default Message, or Hide, according to the explanation below.
- Optionally select an offline image. If you use one, choose a small, appropriate image and plan to check it at a narrow mobile width.
- Select Save or Save & Close. The setting does not take effect reliably until the configuration form is saved.
- Test the result. Open the frontend in a private or logged-out browser window to see what a public visitor receives. Then test with an account or group that is supposed to have Offline Access.
- Perform the maintenance. Keep the production work limited to the planned window, and record any changes that must be reversed if validation fails.
- Return to Global Configuration when finished. On the Site tab, set Site Offline to No, then select Save or Save & Close.
- Verify the public site again. Use a logged-out or private browser session and load several representative pages. The offline page should no longer appear.
Choose the message visitors see
Use Site Language Default Message
This option displays Joomla’s built-in text in the site language. The default English wording documented by Joomla is: “This site is down for maintenance. Please check back again soon.” It is the simplest choice when you do not need to provide a schedule or contact information.

Use Custom Message
A custom message is better when visitors need useful operational information. State what is happening, give an expected return window only if you can support it, and provide a contact or status destination that visitors can actually use. Keep the wording short enough to read on a phone.
For example, a maintenance notice could explain that scheduled updates are in progress, identify the affected service, and say that the site will return after verification. Avoid promising an exact completion time if the work has unknown dependencies. The custom-message setting changes what visitors read; it does not change who can bypass the offline page.
Hide
Hide removes the offline message text. Use it only when a deliberately minimal offline presentation is appropriate. Because visitors receive less context, confirm that the resulting page still communicates the intended state through its remaining layout or image.
Optional offline image
Joomla also documents an optional image for the offline page. Keep the file lightweight so the maintenance page remains quick to load, and inspect it on both a desktop viewport and a narrow mobile viewport. An image is presentation only; it does not provide access control or change the offline behavior.
How administrators and testers access an offline site
The Administrator interface remains available while Site Offline is set to Yes. You can therefore return to Global Configuration and restore the site without first disabling the maintenance mode through another channel.

Frontend access is different. Joomla’s Offline Access permission determines which user groups may view the frontend while it is offline. Check the intended tester’s group before beginning. If the tester lacks that permission, the account will see the offline page just like a public visitor, even though the account can sign in to the back end.
For a realistic public test, use a private browser window or sign out completely. For a privileged test, use the specific account and group that will approve the maintenance result. Test both paths deliberately instead of assuming that an administrator’s view represents everyone’s view.
Restore the site after maintenance
Restoration is a separate configuration change, not an automatic timeout. Joomla will remain offline until you explicitly switch the setting back.
- Sign in to the Administrator back end.
- Open Home Dashboard → Global Configuration (or System → Global Configuration in older documentation).
- Select the Site tab.
- Change Site Offline to No.
- Select Save or Save & Close.
- Open the frontend in a logged-out or private window and check the home page plus important content, forms, and login paths.
If the public browser still receives the offline page after saving, first confirm that the Site tab shows No and that the save completed. Then repeat the test without an existing privileged session, because a user with Offline Access can see a result that ordinary visitors cannot.

Joomla’s user guide documents a hosting-level alternative: password-protect the Joomla directory using the hosting control panel’s Directory Privacy feature. This is broader than the Joomla switch. Visitors who open the protected directory are prompted for a directory username and password created by the hosting control panel.

Use this approach only when every visitor must be stopped at the web-directory boundary. It can also block administrators, including people who normally use the Joomla back end, unless they have the directory credentials. Plan a recovery path and keep the authorized directory credentials available before enabling it.

Offline mode versus a staging workflow
The deciding question is whether you are editing the live installation or preparing a tested replacement. Offline mode is appropriate when the change is small enough to complete and validate during one controlled outage. A staging or development copy is safer when the work involves multiple extensions, structural database changes, a migration, or a broad redesign.
For complex work, Joomla documentation recommends a development server or subdomain. A practical sequence is:

- Test the changed site and resolve incompatibilities before touching production.
- Take a current production backup and schedule the cutover.
- Use Joomla’s offline mode on production for the final synchronization and verification window.
- Switch production back to No only after the cutover checks pass.
This separates experimentation from the live site while still giving you a short, clearly defined period in which visitors are told that production is unavailable.

The frontend is offline, but I cannot edit the site
Offline mode should not remove the Administrator interface. Confirm that you are using the Joomla Administrator URL and an account with back-end permission. If the whole directory was also protected through Directory Privacy, the hosting-level password prompt may be blocking you before Joomla can load; use the authorized directory credentials or disable that protection through the hosting control panel.

An administrator sees the site, but a visitor sees the offline page
This is expected when the administrator or tester has Offline Access. Recheck the public result in a private or logged-out browser. The privileged view is useful for testing the changed frontend, but it is not proof that the site is public.
A tester is still seeing the offline message
Check the user’s group permissions for Offline Access. Having a back-end login does not automatically establish the required frontend permission for every group. Test with the exact account that will review the site and verify that its group is the one granted access.
The custom notice does not appear
Return to Global Configuration → Site and verify both settings: Site Offline must be Yes, and the message behavior must be Use Custom Message. If the behavior is set to Hide or to the language default, Joomla will not display your custom wording.
The site stayed offline after the work ended
Joomla does not restore public access automatically. Set Site Offline to No and save. Then verify with a logged-out browser. If that browser still receives the offline page, inspect the saved value and check whether a separate Directory Privacy lockout is still active.
Everyone is locked out after enabling Directory Privacy
Directory Privacy is intentionally broader than Joomla’s switch. Use the hosting control panel to authenticate with the directory username and password created for the protected directory, or remove the directory protection there. Plan this recovery method before enabling the lockout; Joomla back-end credentials alone may not bypass it.
