Protect your Battle.net login before you protect your gold. Use a unique password, secure the email tied to the account, enable Blizzard’s Authenticator in the free Battle.net Mobile App, and never share access. Treat unsolicited links, “free gold” offers, urgent suspension warnings, and requests for credentials as phishing. For player transactions, stay inside the in-game Trade window, Auction House, or C.O.D. Mail, verify every amount and item before accepting, and avoid paying for unsupported services. If you suspect theft, recover and secure the account and computer first, then contact Blizzard Support; do not assume lost gold will be restored.
What you are protecting—and why speed matters
A stolen World of Warcraft account can be emptied of gold, equipment, crafting materials, and other valuables. Blizzard also warns that compromised accounts may be used to support gold-selling operations. Account theft is therefore more serious than losing one suspicious trade: an attacker can continue accessing the account until the login, email, and device used to reach it are secured.
Scams work differently. You may voluntarily place gold or materials into an agreement, then discover that the other player disconnects, ignores you, or never delivers the promised service. Blizzard Support describes cases such as a player losing all their gold, a crafter disconnecting after receiving materials, and a player being ignored after taking payment. The safest approach is to prevent both paths: harden the account and use only transaction methods that show the exact exchange in the game interface.

Blizzard’s guidance is practical rather than a guarantee of reimbursement. Its Trade Scams article says Blizzard does not restore items or gold in trade-scam situations, although it may take action against an account when it verifies a scam. Account compromise and a voluntary unsupported deal are not the same case, so recovery outcomes can differ.

Secure Battle.net and the email behind it
1. Create a password used nowhere else
Choose a long, hard-to-guess Battle.net password that is not reused on email, social media, forums, or another game. Reuse lets an attacker who obtains one old password try the same combination against Battle.net. Blizzard’s account-security guidance also recommends using a unique email address for Battle.net where practical. The email account is important because it can receive password-reset messages and other security notifications.
Protect that email with its own two-factor authentication if the provider offers it. This adds a second checkpoint even if someone learns your email password. Keep recovery details for the email account current, and do not use an address that other people can access.
2. Turn on Blizzard’s Authenticator
Blizzard’s current account-hacked guidance recommends adding an Authenticator. The Authenticator is available in the free Battle.net Mobile App; Blizzard identifies the app as the place to obtain it in its account-security material. Follow the account-security instructions in the app and finish enrollment while you still control the account. An authentication prompt or code should be expected only when you are signing in or changing security settings.
Blizzard also discusses Phone Notifications as an additional account-protection option. The available guidance does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison with the Authenticator, nor does it require a physical security key. Treat these as layers around the Battle.net login, while email two-factor authentication protects the separate email account used for recovery.

3. Never lend the account
Do not give your password, authenticator approval, or recovery information to guildmates, friends, strangers, “boosters,” or service providers. Do not log in on another person’s computer simply to help with a character or event. Blizzard warns that account sharing can expose the account to theft. If someone needs to send you an item or gold, use the game’s transaction tools rather than handing over login access.
4. Keep the computer and addons trustworthy
Keep your browser and security software updated. Download addons only from sources you trust, and never run an executable file as part of an addon installation. An addon that asks you to launch an installer or separate program is outside the normal in-game addon workflow and deserves suspicion.
If you think an addon or other download may have infected the computer, stop using that machine for Battle.net sign-ins, run a security scan, and change the Battle.net password after the computer is clean. Changing the password before removing malware can simply expose the new password again. Blizzard’s Account Hacked guidance lists malicious websites, addons, phishing, password reuse, gold sellers, and account sharing among attack methods to review.

Phishing imitates official Blizzard communication through websites, email, or in-game messages. The goal may be to collect your credentials, make you approve an unexpected sign-in, or persuade you to install malware. Older Blizzard security advice specifically identifies “free gold,” exclusive loot, and threats of suspension as common lures. The wording can change, but the pressure pattern is familiar: an offer or threat demands immediate action through a link or message.

Warning signs
- A message asks for your Battle.net password, authenticator code, email password, or recovery information.
- A link claims you must “verify” an account, accept a prize, or avoid suspension immediately.
- The address is a lookalike domain, uses unusual spelling, or does not match the Blizzard site you expected.
- A person promises free gold, rare loot, or a special service in exchange for credentials or a download.
- A login approval appears in the Authenticator when you did not just sign in.
- Someone claiming to be a Blizzard employee asks for items or gold. Blizzard’s explicit advice is: “Blizzard employees will never ask you for items or gold.”
Verify without following the message
- Do not click the link, reply with credentials, or approve an unexpected login request.
- Open a fresh browser window and type Blizzard’s address yourself, or use a bookmark you created previously.
- Sign in through the normal Battle.net page and inspect account notices there. A genuine security action should not require you to disclose your password in a reply to an unsolicited message.
- If the message remains suspicious, report it through Blizzard’s support channels and delete it. Do not forward the link to friends as a warning; sharing it can spread the same trap.
Use the same caution for direct messages from other players. A familiar character name or guild affiliation is not proof that the message is genuine; an account belonging to a friend may itself have been stolen.
Choose the safest way to exchange gold and items
For ordinary player-to-player exchanges, keep the transaction inside a Blizzard-provided system. The following methods expose the terms of the exchange before you commit:
| Method | When to use it | Checks before confirming |
|---|---|---|
| In-game Trade window | A direct exchange of gold and items with another player. | Confirm the character, every item, the quantity, and the gold amount on your side and theirs. Recheck after the other player changes anything. |
| Auction House | Buying or selling items at a listed price. | Double-check the unit price, total price, item quality, and quantity before purchasing or posting. |
| C.O.D. Mail | Sending an item that the recipient must pay for before collecting it. | Verify the recipient, item, and requested payment. Do not rely on a separate promise that differs from the C.O.D. amount. |
| “Services for gold” arrangements | Promises to complete a dungeon, achievement, PvP help, leveling, crafting, or another activity in return for payment. | These arrangements carry greater risk because the game interface may not enforce delivery. Do not assume Blizzard will recover the payment if the provider disappears. |
Blizzard Support advises players not to give items, gold, or guild-bank permissions to anyone they do not trust. Guild-bank access deserves particular care: a permission change can expose many players’ assets, not just your personal purse.

Historical guidance about supported and unsupported trades
A Blizzard Customer Support forum post dated November 9, 2018 distinguishes ordinary transactions through the Trade window, Auction House, and C.O.D. Mail from “services for gold,” such as paying another player to complete a dungeon, achievement, or PvP activity. It describes unsupported services as being at the player’s risk and says trades for real-world currency violate policy. That post is older than Blizzard’s current support pages, so use it as explanatory context rather than as a promise about present-day enforcement. For current outcomes, rely on the Trade Scams support article.
A pre-trade checklist that prevents most mistakes
Pause before you press Accept, Buy, Send, or Confirm. Run this short check every time a transaction is valuable or unusual:
- Identify the character. Check the name, realm context, and guild or community details. Do not assume a familiar name guarantees a safe account.
- Read the exact terms in the interface. Compare the item icon, name, quality, quantity, and gold amount. For the Auction House, check the unit and total price.
- Reject last-second changes. If the other player swaps an item, changes the amount, or asks you to hurry, cancel and inspect the window again.
- Keep promises inside enforceable tools. If the exchange can be completed through Trade, Auction House, or C.O.D. Mail, use that path instead of an informal promise.
- Do not transfer access. A request for your password, authenticator approval, guild-bank permission, or a remote login is not part of a normal trade.
- Save useful details after a dispute. Note the character name, realm, approximate time, item or gold amount, and any messages. These details can help a support report, although they do not guarantee restoration.
If a player disconnects after receiving materials, puts you on ignore, or refuses to complete a promised service, do not chase the loss by sending more gold. Stop contact, preserve the details, and report the account through Blizzard’s support process.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Stop signing in from a suspect device. If you clicked a malicious link, ran an unknown executable, or installed a questionable addon, disconnect that computer from further account use until it has been checked.
- Recover the Battle.net account. Use Blizzard’s Account Recovery route described in the Account Hacked article. Follow the identity and password-reset steps shown for your account.
- Secure the email account. Change its password to a unique value, enable the provider’s two-factor authentication if available, and review recovery addresses and active sessions.
- Clean and update the computer. Run a reputable security scan, update the operating system, browser, and security software, and remove suspicious downloads or addons. Do not continue entering credentials until the scan and cleanup are complete.
- Change Battle.net credentials again if necessary. Once the machine and email are secure, set a new unique Battle.net password and review the account’s security settings.
- Add the Authenticator. Blizzard’s account-hacked guidance calls for adding an Authenticator as part of securing the account. Set it up in the free Battle.net Mobile App.
- Submit a support ticket. After securing the account and computer, contact Blizzard Support with the account details and a concise timeline. Include suspicious login information, missing items, and any trade records you preserved.
Review how the compromise happened—password reuse, a phishing page, an addon or download, gold-selling contact, or account sharing—so you can remove the original weakness. If the same password was used elsewhere, change it on those services too, starting with email.
What recovery can realistically accomplish
Do not treat a support ticket as an automatic refund. Blizzard’s current Trade Scams guidance says it does not restore items or gold in trade-scam situations. It may take action against a reported account when it verifies a scam, but enforcement and restoration are separate decisions.
An account that was taken over through stolen credentials is a different circumstance from a player who knowingly entered an unsupported “service for gold” agreement. Blizzard’s Account Hacked guidance directs victims to account recovery, device and account security, and then a support ticket; it does not promise a particular amount of gold or item restoration. Describe what happened accurately instead of labeling every failed deal as hacking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBlizzard’s support pages and policies can change. For the current procedure and the decision on an individual case, use the official support links rather than relying on an old forum answer or advice from another player.
Which security layer should you add?
| Layer | Protects | What the guidance establishes | Recovery consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battle.net Authenticator | The Battle.net sign-in and sensitive account actions. | Blizzard recommends adding it; it is available in the free Battle.net Mobile App. | Set it up while you have access and follow Blizzard’s account-recovery process if the phone or authenticator becomes unavailable. |
| Email two-factor authentication | The email account that can receive Battle.net resets and notices. | Blizzard recommends enabling it when the email provider offers the feature. | Keep email recovery methods current; losing the email account can undermine Battle.net recovery. |
| Phone Notifications | Additional account-security alerts or actions associated with Battle.net. | Blizzard lists Phone Notifications among its account-protection options. | Detailed feature differences and recovery behavior are not established in the cited guidance; follow the setup instructions shown for your account. |
These layers complement one another. An Authenticator does not secure a reused email password, and email two-factor authentication does not excuse approving an unexpected Battle.net login. Use unique credentials and cautious browsing alongside the extra prompts.
A practical protection routine
Before installing an addon
- Use a trusted addon source.
- Confirm the download is an addon, not an executable installer.
- Keep the browser and security software updated.
- Scan the computer if anything behaves unexpectedly, then change credentials from a clean device.
Before accepting a trade
- Read every item, quantity, and gold amount in the Trade window.
- Cancel and recheck if either side changes the offer.
- Use the Auction House or C.O.D. Mail when those tools fit the exchange.
- Refuse requests for account access, guild-bank permissions, codes, or real-world payment.
When a message creates urgency
- Stop; do not click or reply.
- Type Blizzard’s address manually or use a known bookmark.
- Never provide credentials or approve an unexpected login.
- Report the message and preserve the sender and wording if a support report is needed.
After any suspected compromise
- Recover the account.
- Secure the email and computer.
- Change unique passwords and add the Authenticator.
- Then submit a support ticket with a factual timeline.
The Bottom Line
Keep your gold behind a secured Battle.net account, a protected email address, and Blizzard’s in-game transaction tools. Treat every unsolicited login request or unusually generous offer as hostile until verified independently, and contact Blizzard Support quickly after a compromise without assuming a scam loss will be reimbursed.
