Your World of Warcraft characters, items and progress are protected through the Battle.net account used to sign in. The most effective protection is a combination of a unique Battle.net password, a secured email account, Blizzard’s Battle.net Authenticator, careful handling of links and addons, and a clean computer. If you suspect someone has accessed the account, use Blizzard’s recovery process first, then secure the account and device and contact official support.
This guide follows Blizzard’s current account-security guidance and separates preventive measures from recovery steps. No physical security product is required for the measures Blizzard documents.
What you are protecting
World of Warcraft access is tied to your Battle.net account rather than to a single game installation. Anyone who obtains the Battle.net login details may be able to enter the account, alter its settings or access game assets. Blizzard’s Account Hacked guidance and its Securing a Battle.net Account article treat account protection as a combination of credential security, login verification, phishing resistance and computer hygiene.
Security is therefore not a one-time setting. A strong password can still be exposed by a reused website password, a compromised email inbox, a malicious addon download or a fake login page. The controls below are designed to work together.

Harden the account before anything goes wrong
Use a password that is unique to Battle.net
Create a long, unpredictable password that you have never used on another website. Blizzard specifically warns that reusing the Battle.net email address and password elsewhere can put the Battle.net account at risk. A password manager can generate and store a different password for every service, but the important requirement is uniqueness; Blizzard’s published guidance does not endorse a particular password-manager product.
- Do not reuse the Battle.net password for email, social networks, forums or game-related websites.
- Do not send the password through chat, email or support messages.
- If you discover that the same password was used elsewhere, change the Battle.net password and then change it on every other service that shared it.
Protect the email address linked to Battle.net
Your email account can be used to receive security notices and account-recovery messages, so it needs its own protection. Enable the email provider’s two-factor authentication when that option is available. Use a separate, unique email password, review the provider’s recovery addresses and phone numbers, and remove any recovery method you no longer control.
Do not assume that a secure Battle.net login compensates for an exposed inbox. An attacker who controls the email account may be able to intercept password-reset messages even if the game account itself has an authenticator.
Add the Battle.net Authenticator
Blizzard provides the Battle.net Authenticator through its free mobile app. It adds an additional verification step to supported account-security flows, so a stolen password alone is less useful to an attacker. Install it only through the official mobile-app distribution channel and follow the in-app pairing instructions.

Blizzard also says phone notifications can help with recovery if there is a problem with the Authenticator. Notifications are a recovery aid, not a replacement for protecting the email account and keeping the phone itself secure. Keep the phone’s operating system locked and updated.
Understand where passkeys fit
A passkey is a device-stored login method rather than a password copied from a website. Blizzard’s Using a Passkey With Battle.net article says passkeys are currently available only through the beta version of the Battle.net Desktop App. Availability can change, so check that official article and the current app before relying on a passkey.
Passkeys and the Authenticator are different controls. A passkey is an alternate way to sign in on a device that supports it; the Authenticator is Blizzard’s account-protection feature in its mobile app, with phone notifications that may assist recovery. Do not assume that enabling one automatically enables the other or guarantees account recovery.

Recognize and block phishing
Blizzard says phishing can arrive through a website, email or in-game communication that impersonates Blizzard. The message may pressure you to act quickly, claim that your account is suspended, promise a reward or ask you to confirm credentials. The appearance of a logo or a familiar name does not prove that the message is genuine.

Check the destination before signing in
- Pause instead of following an unexpected login, security or reward link.
- Inspect the destination address shown by your browser or link preview. A look-alike spelling, an unrelated domain or a shortened address that hides the destination is a reason to stop.
- When in doubt, close the message and type an official Blizzard or Battle.net address yourself, then navigate to the relevant account or support page.
- Never enter your Battle.net password into a page opened by an unsolicited prompt.
Support labels such as “Account compromised,” “Password changed,” “All items missing” and “I want to make sure my account is safe from hackers” describe real problems Blizzard handles, but seeing one of those phrases in a message does not authenticate the sender. Use the official site rather than a link in the message.
Handle suspicious in-game contact
Do not share login information with another player, guild member or person claiming to be a moderator. Blizzard’s account-security guidance includes in-game communication among the places where impersonation can occur. Report or ignore suspicious contact using the game’s available controls, and reach the support site independently.
Keep the computer and addons clean
Download addons cautiously
Addons can extend the interface, but Blizzard warns about malicious sites and addons. Download addons only from a source you trust, and do not run an executable file merely because it is presented as an addon installer. A normal addon package should not require you to launch an unknown program to place files in the game’s addon folder.

Remove the suspect software, scan the system and change the Battle.net password from a device you believe is clean.

Update the software that handles login data
Keep the web browser, operating system and security software updated. Updates close vulnerabilities that attackers can use before an account owner notices anything unusual. Use the security software’s current definitions and allow it to complete a full scan when Blizzard’s guidance calls for checking for malware, keyloggers or viruses.
- Run a malware scan if you clicked a suspicious link, installed an untrusted addon or notice unexpected programs, pop-ups or browser changes.
- Change the Battle.net password after a suspected keylogger or other credential-stealing infection is removed, and do so from a clean device if possible.
- Do not save Battle.net credentials in a browser profile shared with other people.
Be careful on shared computers
Blizzard warns against logging in on someone else’s computer. A shared machine may have saved passwords, an untrusted browser extension, malware or another person watching the screen. If using a public or borrowed computer is unavoidable, do not save credentials, sign out completely and change the password afterward from a trusted device; the safer choice is to use your own maintained computer.
Keep credentials private and avoid risky third parties
Never share the account
Account sharing exposes the password, authenticator prompts and recovery information to another person. Blizzard’s guidance warns against sharing accounts even with friends or guildmates. Each person who knows the credentials increases the number of devices, networks and messages that can expose them, and it becomes harder to determine who made a change.

Do not buy gold from non-Blizzard sources
Blizzard warns against buying gold from non-Blizzard sources and using leveling services. These services can request login details, direct you to phishing pages or involve software that exposes the computer. They also create an avoidable security risk in addition to any game-policy consequences. Keep account access within Blizzard’s official systems and do not give a third party your password to perform in-game work.

What to do when you suspect unauthorized access
Act in an order that limits further damage. Do not keep experimenting with logins on a computer that may be infected, and do not follow a recovery link from an unsolicited message.
- Identify the warning sign. Treat an unexpected password-change notice, an inability to sign in, missing items or characters, an unfamiliar account change, or an authenticator problem as a possible compromise. These symptoms correspond to the problem labels used in Blizzard support.
- Start at official Account Recovery. Open Blizzard’s Account Hacked guidance directly and use the recovery route it provides. If you cannot access the account, do not keep guessing credentials or disclose them to someone who offers help in chat.
- Secure the email account. Change the email password from a clean device, enable the provider’s two-factor authentication if available, and check for unauthorized forwarding rules or recovery changes. This prevents an attacker from immediately reclaiming access through the inbox.
- Clean and scan the computer. Update security software and scan for malware, keyloggers and viruses. If the suspected source was an addon or downloaded executable, remove it and avoid using that computer for password changes until the scan is complete.
- Change the Battle.net password. Set a new password that has never been used anywhere else. Do not reuse the password that may have been exposed, and do not change it on a device you still suspect is compromised.
- Re-establish account protection. Add or re-pair the Battle.net Authenticator as directed by Blizzard, review phone-notification settings and confirm that the email address and other account details are yours.
- Submit an official support ticket. Blizzard directs users to contact support after recovery and account and computer security steps. Describe the symptoms, the approximate time you noticed them and the recovery actions already completed, without putting your password or authentication codes in the ticket.
- Notify Blizzard promptly. Blizzard’s End User License Agreement says users should notify Blizzard promptly when they suspect a security breach involving login details. The Spanish edition of the agreement was last reviewed November 30, 2023; contractual wording can vary by territory, so consult the agreement applicable to your account.
After recovery: verify what changed
Once you regain access, inspect the account rather than assuming that a successful login means the incident is over.
- Confirm that the Battle.net email address and contact details are correct.
- Check whether the Authenticator is still associated with your account and whether phone notifications are configured as expected.
- Review characters, item inventories and recent account activity for changes you did not make. Missing items or characters should be reported through official support, even if the password has been reset.
- Check your email account for password-reset messages, forwarding rules or recovery changes you do not recognize.
- Remove unknown browser extensions, addon installers and other software found during the device review.
Do not restore the old password, reinstall the suspicious addon or resume account sharing after recovery. Those actions can reopen the same path that allowed the unauthorized access.
A maintenance routine that keeps protection effective
At every login
- Use the official game client or a destination you reached independently.
- Reject unexpected requests for credentials, authentication codes or account details.
- Keep the authenticator phone in your possession and do not approve a request you did not initiate.
When installing software or addons
- Use a trusted addon source and inspect what the download contains.
- Do not execute an unknown installer to enable an addon.
- Update the browser and security software before entering account credentials.
When your email, phone or computer changes
- Update recovery information through official account settings.
- Remove old phone numbers, email addresses and devices that you no longer control.
- Run a malware scan after a suspected infection and change the Battle.net password from a clean device.
Limits of Blizzard’s documented methods
Blizzard’s published material supports digital protections: a unique password, a secured email account, the Battle.net Authenticator, phone notifications, phishing awareness and computer hygiene. It does not establish that a particular physical security key or other paid accessory is required or compatible with World of Warcraft account protection. A purchase is therefore not a prerequisite for following the documented steps.
Passkey support is the main feature with an explicit availability boundary: Blizzard’s support article limits it to the beta Battle.net Desktop App at the time of publication. Check the current article before planning a recovery strategy around passkeys, and keep the Authenticator, email security and recovery route available regardless.
