Keep your UPI PIN private, and treat a watch as a separately authorized payment device. Set it up only through the official wearable and primary UPI apps, verify the device identity shown during linking, approve the connection yourself, and choose a conservative transaction limit. Use only a wearable and UPI app that support NPCI’s permitted UPI Circle IoT flow; ordinary contactless-payment capability does not automatically mean UPI compatibility.

After linking, review transaction history regularly. If the watch is lost, tampered with, or no longer needed, delink it immediately in the primary UPI app and contact your bank or app provider through an official channel if you cannot revoke access.

What a UPI-enabled wearable actually does

In an IoT payment setup, the wearable is a secondary device or software profile linked to a primary UPI app. The primary app remains the place where the account relationship is established, consent is recorded, limits are managed, transactions are reviewed, and the device can be revoked. NPCI’s UPI Circle material describes a registration flow that starts in the IoT app, verifies the mobile number, and then moves to the primary UPI app for device linking, consent and a limit. Authorization uses the UPI PIN or an available biometric method in that primary app. See the NPCI UPI Circle product page.

NPCI’s 8 October 2025 addendum permits watch profiles among supported IoT devices, but it also requires an IoT debit transaction to be initiated by explicit user action. A watch therefore should not be able to debit an account merely because it is nearby or linked. The exact permitted device and software combination still matters; the rule does not make every smartwatch a UPI device. The requirement appears in NPCI/UPI/OC-201B/2025-26.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Protect the UPI PIN before you protect the watch

Your UPI PIN is the 4- or 6-digit passcode used to authorize bank transactions. NPCI’s consumer guidance is unambiguous: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” Banks, NPCI, a watch manufacturer and technical support staff should not need you to disclose it. Read the NPCI UPI FAQs.

  • Enter the PIN only on the trusted screen of the official UPI app or an approved payment flow that you deliberately started.
  • Never send the PIN by text, email, chat, phone call, screenshot or voice message.
  • Do not reuse a PIN as your watch unlock code, phone passcode or another service password.
  • Shield the screen when entering it in public and avoid speaking the digits aloud.
  • If someone claiming to represent your bank, NPCI or device support asks for the PIN or an OTP, end the interaction and contact the institution using the number or support path in its official app or website.

RBI’s public-awareness notice identifies PIN and OTP disclosure, malicious links, fake applications and SIM-swap attacks as common digital-payment risks. Its guidance is available at RBI’s payment-fraud awareness notice.

Set up a wearable through the primary UPI app

Use this sequence whenever the device and app explicitly support NPCI’s UPI Circle IoT flow. Menu names differ by provider, so use the labels shown in the current official apps rather than following an unsolicited link or a video that asks you to bypass a step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install from a trusted source. Download the wearable’s companion app and the UPI app from their official app-store listings or the provider’s official website. Do not install an APK sent in a message or follow a shortened payment link. RBI specifically warns about spurious applications and malicious links.
  2. Secure the phone first. Update the operating system and both apps, use a screen lock, and avoid completing enrollment on a rooted or compromised phone. The phone is the primary control point even when the watch is used at the checkout.
  3. Start registration in the IoT or wearable app. Choose the UPI or UPI Circle option supplied by the provider. Confirm that the account and mobile number displayed are yours.
  4. Complete mobile-number verification. Follow the in-app verification step. If the number, account or SIM shown is unfamiliar, stop instead of trying to “fix” the enrollment through a caller or chat agent.
  5. Move to the primary UPI app when prompted. The primary app should identify the secondary device or software profile. Check the watch name, model or other device details against the item in your possession.
  6. Reject an unknown device. Do not approve a profile you did not initiate or one whose details are incomplete, misspelled or inconsistent with the watch you own. NPCI requires the primary app to display secondary-device or software details and capture user consent with two-factor authentication.
  7. Authorize deliberately. Give consent only after reading the account, device and permission information. The documented flow may request your UPI PIN or a biometric confirmation in the primary app; no support person should see or hear that secret.
  8. Choose a limit before enabling payments. Start with the smallest amount that covers your intended use. A lower limit reduces exposure if the watch is misplaced or a transaction is disputed.
  9. Finish the pairing in both apps. Wait for a success message, then verify that the same wearable appears in the primary app’s device-management area. Do not assume that a Bluetooth pairing notification alone means UPI authorization is complete.
  10. Make a controlled first payment. Initiate a small transaction yourself, confirm the merchant and amount on the payment screen, and check the resulting entry in transaction history. If the amount, recipient or device shown is wrong, stop using the profile and delink it.

Does every smartwatch support UPI payments?

No. NPCI’s rules limit UPI Circle IoT linking to permitted IoT devices and software, and the primary UPI app must support the flow. A watch that supports NFC or contactless card payments has not thereby been shown to support UPI. Likewise, a watch that can display notifications, QR codes or a banking app may still lack the authorization and lifecycle controls required for UPI Circle IoT.

There is no universal model-by-model compatibility list established here. Before buying or enabling a watch, verify all of the following with the watch maker and the UPI provider:

  • The exact model, region and software version are permitted for the provider’s UPI Circle IoT implementation.
  • Your primary UPI app offers wearable or IoT-device enrollment, rather than only phone-based UPI.
  • The enrollment screen identifies the secondary device and requires your explicit consent.
  • You can set or change a limit, view transaction history and delink the device from the primary app.
  • The provider publishes an official recovery route for a lost, reset or compromised watch.

If a sales page says only “contactless payments,” ask which payment rails are supported and which UPI app completes enrollment. Do not infer UPI support from a generic wallet logo, an NFC specification or a watch’s ability to pay in another country.

Understand the current NPCI limits

The following figures come from NPCI’s 8 October 2025 addendum and are not a promise that every provider has enabled every limit. Your app may impose a lower amount, and NPCI can revise the framework.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control NPCI figure How to interpret it
Maximum per IoT-device transaction ₹5,000 A dated ceiling in the 8 October 2025 addendum; the provider may set a lower device limit.
Maximum per delegation per month ₹15,000 The addendum’s monthly ceiling for a delegation, not an instruction to spend that amount.
IoT devices or software profiles linked to one primary UPI app Up to five The framework permits up to five; your app may support fewer or apply additional eligibility rules.
Initial period after linking a new device ₹2,000 shown on NPCI’s current UPI Circle page for the first 24 hours The page’s publication date is not stated. Check the limit displayed in your current app and the latest provider rules before relying on it.

Use the primary app’s controls as a security dashboard

After activation, open the primary UPI app’s device-management area at regular intervals. NPCI’s IoT requirements call for lifecycle management, limits, delinking and transaction history. Those are practical controls, not optional extras.

  • Device identity: Confirm that every linked profile belongs to a watch or software instance you recognize. Remove old test profiles and watches you no longer own.
  • Limit management: Lower the amount when you are travelling, lending the watch, or not using it. Raise it only when a known purchase requires more and lower it again afterward.
  • Transaction history: Look for unfamiliar merchants, duplicate debits, unexpected times or amounts that do not match the watch’s use. Save the transaction reference shown by the app before contacting support.
  • Delinking: Revoke the profile when the watch is sold, returned, reset for another user, sent for repair, or simply no longer needed.
  • Two-factor consent: Treat a request to approve a new device as a security event. If you did not start it, deny it and investigate the phone and account.

Recognize QR-code and “refund” traps

A wearable does not change the direction of a UPI payment. NPCI warns that scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is for making a payment, not receiving money. A person who sends a QR image while promising a refund, prize, salary, verification credit or account unlock is asking you to authorize a debit if you complete the PIN step. See NPCI’s Fraud Awareness guidance.

Apply the same rule to a watch notification. Read the payee and amount on the phone or approved payment screen before confirming. Decline a request that appears without an action you initiated, names an unfamiliar merchant, or arrives immediately after an unsolicited call. A genuine refund normally does not require you to reveal a PIN or approve a new “receive money” QR transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do if the wearable is lost, stolen or tampered with

Act from a trusted phone or computer as soon as you notice the problem. Do not wait for an unknown payment to appear.

  1. Open the official primary UPI app and locate its linked-device, IoT or UPI Circle section.
  2. Select the missing or compromised watch and use the app’s delink, revoke, disable or remove control.
  3. Review transaction history from the time the watch was last in your possession. Record unfamiliar transaction IDs, amounts and timestamps.
  4. Change the watch’s unlock credential and the phone’s screen-lock credential if either may have been observed. Do not send your UPI PIN to anyone while reporting the incident.
  5. Contact your bank and UPI app provider through the support option in the official app or on the institution’s verified website if delinking fails, the device is not listed, or an unauthorized debit appears.
  6. Ask the bank or provider whether additional account protections are needed, and follow its dispute or fraud-reporting process. Keep copies of the confirmation numbers.

If the phone itself is lost, NPCI’s consumer FAQ advises blocking the mobile number as part of the response. That is separate from removing a watch, so address both the phone/SIM and the wearable profile when applicable.

Diagnose common setup and payment failures

The watch cannot be found during enrollment

Check that the exact model and software are eligible, the companion app is current, Bluetooth or the required connection is enabled, and the correct mobile number is active. If the primary UPI app never offers an IoT or wearable option, do not substitute a third-party wallet or sideloaded application; the provider may not support the flow for your account or region.

The device details do not match

Cancel the request. Compare the displayed name, model and profile with the physical watch and the companion app. A mismatch can indicate the wrong account, a stale pairing or an enrollment request you did not start. Revoke any unfamiliar profile and contact official support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authorization is rejected

Confirm that you are using the correct UPI PIN without repeated guesses, that the bank account is active, and that the app has a working network connection. Never “verify” a failed authorization by telling a caller the PIN or OTP. If the app locks or limits attempts, use its official recovery path and your bank’s support channel.

A payment appears twice or looks unfamiliar

Stop using the watch, capture the transaction references, and check whether one entry is pending or reversed before attempting another payment. Report an unauthorized debit promptly through the bank and UPI app. Delink the device while the investigation is opened.

The watch was reset or sent for repair

Remove its UPI authorization before handing it over. A factory reset may erase local data but does not necessarily revoke a server-side UPI profile; confirm removal in the primary app and link it again only after the watch returns to your possession.

How to compare supported wearables safely

When two watches claim UPI support, compare the security workflow rather than the number of contactless features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Criterion Questions to ask Evidence to accept
Compatibility Is this exact model and software profile permitted, and does my primary UPI app support it? An official provider or NPCI-compatible enrollment path for the specific model and region.
Authorization clarity Will the primary app identify the secondary device and ask for my explicit consent? A visible device record and two-factor approval that you initiate.
Control Can I set a limit, inspect history and delink without contacting a salesperson? Working controls in the primary UPI app, not only a watch-side settings screen.
Recovery What is the official process if the watch is lost, repaired, reset or sold? Documented revocation and bank-support channels available without sharing secrets.

A lower advertised price or a larger watch feature list cannot compensate for missing revocation and history controls. If a provider cannot explain how to remove the profile, do not link your bank account.

Daily habits that reduce payment exposure

  • Keep the watch’s operating system, companion app and primary UPI app updated through official channels.
  • Use a strong, private watch unlock code and enable an auto-lock or wrist-detection feature when the device offers one; these controls protect access to the watch but do not replace UPI authorization safeguards.
  • Do not lend a linked watch. If another person needs to wear it, delink it first and set it up under the correct account afterward.
  • Turn off payment capability when you will not use it for an extended period, if the primary app provides that option.
  • Review account alerts and transaction history instead of relying only on a vibration or watch notification.
  • Keep the phone’s SIM and mobile number under your control. Treat an unexpected loss of cellular service followed by payment alerts as a reason to contact the mobile carrier and bank quickly, because RBI lists SIM swaps among fraud routes.
  • Use official support addresses and phone numbers. A caller’s knowledge of your name, recent purchase or last four account digits does not prove identity.

Privacy and data checks before linking

Read the permission and privacy screens in both the wearable and UPI apps. Grant only permissions needed for the payment flow, and understand whether the watch stores transaction notifications locally. Remove the profile and clear the device before resale or return. These steps do not alter NPCI’s payment limits, but they reduce the chance that another wearer can see account activity left on the hardware.

Do not photograph or export QR codes, transaction screens or account identifiers to an unsecured gallery or shared chat. If you must provide evidence to the bank, use the official upload or case channel and redact unrelated personal information.

A concise pre-payment checklist

  1. Did I initiate this payment myself?
  2. Is the merchant or recipient exactly the one I intend to pay?
  3. Does the amount match the purchase?
  4. Am I using an approved device and the official UPI app?
  5. Am I being asked for a PIN or OTP to receive money, a refund or a prize?
  6. Can I still see and revoke this wearable in the primary app?

If any answer is uncertain, cancel the action and verify through the bank or UPI provider’s official channel. The safest wearable payment is one that remains understandable and reversible from the primary app.
