You can keep using Apple Intelligence and Siri while reducing unnecessary exposure by changing four groups of controls: how Siri is activated, which apps can contribute information or show suggestions, which Apple Intelligence features are enabled, and whether requests are sent to Private Cloud Compute (PCC). Apple says many tasks run on your device, but more complex requests can use PCC, which is still cloud processing.
For the clearest picture, review Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report when that report is available. It shows recent requests handled by PCC, but it is an inspection tool—not a promise that every request stays on your iPhone or a complete audit of all data handling.
What Apple Intelligence and Siri do with your data
Apple Intelligence does not use one processing route for every request. Apple says it analyzes a request to decide whether the task can be completed on the device or whether it needs Private Cloud Compute. Many everyday tasks run locally; more demanding tasks may be handled by larger models on Apple silicon servers.
That distinction matters for privacy. On-device processing avoids sending the request to a server for that task. A PCC request leaves the device and is processed in Apple’s cloud infrastructure. Apple says data relevant to a PCC request is used to fulfill the request, is not retained or accessible to Apple, and is protected by a design that lets independent researchers inspect the server software. Those are Apple’s stated architecture and security claims, not an independent guarantee about every individual interaction.

Apple also states: “Your private personal data and interactions are never used to train our foundation models unless you explicitly choose to help improve them.” Treat that as Apple’s description of its policy and controls. It does not mean that no data is ever transmitted, nor does it make PCC an on-device mode.
Your privacy choices therefore involve two separate questions:
- Activation and personalization: whether Siri listens for a wake phrase, which apps Siri can learn from, and where suggestions appear.
- Processing and features: which Apple Intelligence functions you allow and whether advanced requests can use PCC.
The exact menus depend on your iOS version, device, language, and region. The controls below reflect the iOS 27-era Apple guides and may not appear identically on older software or in every country.

A practical privacy setup in the right order
- Open Settings > Siri > Requests and choose how Siri can be activated.
- Review Siri’s access, learning, and suggestion settings for each app; turn off sources and surfaces you do not need.
- Use feature-specific switches to disable summaries, smart replies, voicemail suggestions, or other Apple Intelligence functions instead of disabling everything by default.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report, select a reporting period, and inspect or export the JSON report when the control is available.
- Review Siri and Dictation improvement choices separately. Optional sharing of audio or interaction history is a different decision from allowing Siri to answer requests.
1. Control how Siri activates
Turn off wake-phrase listening
To stop voice activation, go to Settings > Siri > Requests and turn off the option for listening for “Siri” or “Hey Siri.” The wording can vary by software version. With that setting disabled, Siri will not respond to the configured wake phrase.
On supported devices, you can still invoke Siri by another method, such as pressing the side or Home button, while leaving the wake phrase disabled. This keeps an intentional, physical action available without having the device listen for the phrase continuously.
Use Type to Siri where supported
Some devices let you type a request instead of speaking. Enable or use Type to Siri in the Siri settings when it is offered on your device. Typed requests avoid sending microphone audio as part of that interaction, although the text can still be processed on the device or through PCC depending on the task.
Use the face-down behavior on iPhone
Apple says placing an iPhone face down prevents it from responding to the wake phrase while it remains face down. This is a quick physical safeguard for meetings, bedrooms, or other situations in which you do not want the phone to react to voice.
Keep activation choices separate from processing choices
Disabling “Siri” or “Hey Siri” changes how a request starts; it does not by itself disable Apple Intelligence features that you launch elsewhere. Conversely, leaving button activation enabled does not force every request into the cloud. Review both sets of controls if you want a deliberate balance between convenience and data minimization.

2. Limit app access, learning, and suggestion surfaces
Siri can use information from individual apps to understand requests and offer suggestions. Apple says the available controls differ by app and Siri version, so inspect them rather than assuming one global switch covers every source.
Review app-by-app Siri permissions
From Siri settings, open the list of apps that can work with Siri. For each sensitive app, look for controls governing Siri’s access, learning from the app, or inclusion in search and suggestions. Turn off access or learning for apps whose content should not influence Siri responses—such as private notes, journaling, health information, financial records, or confidential work apps.
Removing an app from Siri learning can reduce personalization. It may also make commands less convenient or prevent app-specific suggestions. Make the change per app instead of disabling all Siri functions if only a few sources concern you.

Siri suggestions can appear in places such as Search, the Lock Screen, sharing sheets, and other system surfaces, depending on the app and software version. Disable individual suggestion locations that could reveal private activity to someone who can see your screen. A Lock Screen suggestion, for example, can expose the name of an app or an action even when the phone is locked.
Suggestion controls affect display and personalization; they are not a guarantee that no underlying request will be processed. If you want to minimize both exposure and processing, combine suggestion changes with app-level learning controls and feature-specific opt-outs.
Check after major app or iOS changes
Updates can add new app integrations or rename controls. Revisit the Siri settings after a major iOS update and whenever you install an app that handles sensitive information. Availability can also change with language and region.
3. Disable only the Apple Intelligence features you do not want
You do not have to choose between unrestricted Apple Intelligence and turning off every Siri capability. Apple’s iOS 27 guidance lists separate switches for several features. The labels and locations can vary, but the principle is consistent: disable the output or automation that creates concern while retaining ordinary commands you still use.

Look for these controls in the relevant Apple Intelligence, Siri, Messages, Mail, Notifications, Phone, or Journal settings on your device. Apple notes that supported devices, languages, regions, and feature status affect what appears. A feature marked beta may have different availability or behavior than a standard system function.

Use Screen Time for a stronger restriction
If you manage a child’s device or need a broader restriction, Screen Time can limit access to Siri and related intelligence features. Screen Time restrictions are useful when individual switches are too easy to re-enable, but they also reduce functionality for every person using that device. Set a Screen Time passcode that the restricted user does not know if the restriction must persist.
4. Understand Private Cloud Compute before deciding what to allow
PCC is Apple’s cloud environment for requests that need more computing capacity than the device can provide. Apple says the request is evaluated to determine the route, with many tasks handled locally and more complex ones sent to PCC.
What Apple says PCC does
- Runs larger models on Apple silicon servers for eligible requests.
- Processes data relevant to fulfilling the request.
- Does not retain the data or make it accessible to Apple, according to Apple’s description.
- Uses server software that independent researchers can inspect, according to Apple.
These points describe Apple’s intended design. They should not be read as proof that every request is local, that every privacy risk is eliminated, or that an outside auditor has reviewed each request you make.

Use the feature-specific switches above, limit Siri’s access to sensitive apps, and avoid including unnecessary personal details in requests. If a task can be completed with a short, non-sensitive prompt, do not add names, account numbers, health details, or private documents. This is data minimization: even when a request needs PCC, less context is exposed to the processing system.
There is no Apple setting documented in the cited guides that turns Apple Intelligence into a universal “on-device only” mode while preserving every feature. If keeping a particular category of information off cloud services is an absolute requirement, disable the feature that would use that information rather than relying on routing to choose the device.
5. Inspect PCC activity with Apple Intelligence Report
On iOS 27-era software, Apple documents an Apple Intelligence Report under Settings > Privacy & Security. The report records requests handled by PCC during a selected period and can be exported as a JSON file.
Create a report
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Apple Intelligence Report.
- Choose the available period: last 15 minutes or last 7 days.
- Review the listed PCC requests. Use the export option to save the report as a JSON file if you need a record for your own review.
Interpret an empty report correctly
An empty report can simply mean that no request was sent to PCC during the period you selected. It does not prove that Apple Intelligence is disabled, that every request was processed locally forever, or that no other system data was handled under a different service. The report is specifically about PCC requests in its selected window.

Run a short report immediately after trying a feature, then use the seven-day period for a broader picture of normal use. Compare the entries with the actions you remember taking. The report can show whether a feature generated PCC activity, but it does not provide a privacy-risk score or independently verify Apple’s retention and access claims.

6. Review Siri and Dictation improvement settings
Siri operation and service-improvement sharing are related but separate. Apple says certain Siri and Dictation information can be sent to its servers using encrypted protocols and random, device-generated identifiers. Apple also describes optional sharing of audio and interaction history to improve its services.
Decide whether to share audio or interaction history
Open the Siri and Dictation privacy or improvement settings on your device and read the current choices. If you do not want to contribute audio or interaction history, leave the optional improvement-sharing controls off. Siri can remain available even when you decline optional improvement participation, subject to the features supported by your software.
Understand deletion limits
Apple says deletion has limits: requests older than six months may not be removable through the same process, and reviewed samples that are no longer associated with the device-generated identifier cannot be linked back for deletion. This means an opt-out or deletion request should not be described as erasing every historical copy under every circumstance.
Separate identifiers from anonymity
A random device-generated identifier is designed to avoid directly tying a request to your Apple Account, but it is not the same as saying that no technical information accompanies a request. Use Apple’s wording precisely: encrypted transmission and random identifiers are privacy measures, not a promise of perfect anonymity.
Privacy choices by priority
There is no published Apple privacy-risk score for these settings. Choose based on what you value most:

Common situations and the best setting combination
Shared home or workplace
Disable the wake phrase and use button activation or Type to Siri. Turn off Lock Screen suggestions so another person cannot see app names or summarized content at a glance. Review notifications and app-specific learning for work or personal apps.
Confidential work information
Keep Siri from learning from workplace apps and disable Mail or Messages summaries if they could expose project details. Do not paste confidential documents into an Apple Intelligence request merely because the feature is available. If your employer has a device-management policy, follow it in addition to these personal settings.

Private journaling or health information
Turn off Journal prompts and Siri access to apps containing sensitive entries. Avoid using a broad request that combines private context from several apps. Use the Apple Intelligence Report after testing a workflow to see whether it generated PCC activity.

Child’s iPhone or family-managed device
Use Screen Time restrictions when you need controls that cannot be changed casually. Also disable wake-phrase activation and Lock Screen suggestions if the device is often used around other people. Recheck settings after software updates.
Troubleshooting privacy controls
A setting is missing
Check the iOS version, device model, language, and region. Apple documents these features for iOS 27-era software, and some options are limited to supported devices or languages. Update the device only if the update is compatible with your organization’s or family’s requirements.
The Apple Intelligence Report has no entries
Confirm the selected period and whether you actually used a feature that could require PCC. An empty last-15-minutes report may simply reflect no PCC request in that short interval. Try the seven-day view before concluding that the report is malfunctioning.
Siri still appears after wake-phrase listening is disabled
Check whether you are invoking Siri with the side or Home button, headset controls, CarPlay, or another supported activation method. Turning off the wake phrase does not disable every possible activation path.
Suggestions continue after changing one app
Suggestion locations are separate from app learning. Reopen Siri settings and inspect both the app’s access and each suggestion surface, including Search, the Lock Screen, and sharing-related surfaces where offered.
A feature cannot be disabled independently
Some controls depend on software version, language, region, or device eligibility. If the individual switch is unavailable, use the broader Siri AI or Apple Intelligence control, or apply a Screen Time restriction when that is appropriate.
A maintenance checklist
- After each major iOS update, revisit Settings > Siri > Requests.
- Review Siri access and learning for newly installed or sensitive apps.
- Check Lock Screen, Search, notification, and sharing suggestions.
- Disable only the summaries, smart replies, prompts, and suggestions you do not need.
- Run an Apple Intelligence Report after testing an unfamiliar feature.
- Review optional Siri and Dictation improvement-sharing choices.
- Use concise prompts and omit personal details that are irrelevant to the task.
- Recheck language, region, and device eligibility when a control changes or disappears.
The most privacy-preserving setup is not necessarily to abandon Siri. It is to make activation intentional, limit the apps and surfaces that can expose personal context, disable the Apple Intelligence features you do not use, and verify PCC activity with the report when available. Apple says many requests stay on the device, but advanced requests can use PCC; your settings determine how much of that capability you need to allow.
