Protect your privacy by treating an AI griefbot as a third-party data service, not as a private diary. Before signing up, read its policy for collection, model training, retention, sharing and deletion. During use, disclose only what is necessary, avoid identifying or highly sensitive details, be cautious with voice and image uploads, and verify that you can view and delete both conversations and any saved memories.
A griefbot can offer a structured way to remember someone, but it is not the deceased person and cannot replace trusted human or professional support. Privacy decisions matter because grief conversations often contain information about you, relatives, friends and the person you miss.
What privacy risks are specific to griefbots?
Griefbots invite unusually intimate material: private memories, family history, relationship conflicts, medical experiences, photographs, messages and recordings. A service may process that material to generate text, personalize replies, create a synthetic voice or maintain a memorial persona. The service may also send some content to other companies that provide AI models, voice synthesis, video, analytics or cloud infrastructure.
“Private” can describe a setting or a marketing promise; it does not automatically mean that no employee, contractor or processor can handle the content. Likewise, “not used for training” may refer only to one model-training purpose while other retention, analytics or personalization uses continue. The only reliable answer comes from the specific service’s policy, settings and support responses.

Keep two boundaries clear:
- The bot is software generating responses from supplied data. It is not the deceased person and cannot confirm what that person would think or say.
- Privacy hygiene and emotional support are separate issues. Use a trusted person, grief counselor or crisis service when you need human care, assessment or immediate help.
Read the privacy policy before creating an account
Read the privacy policy and terms before entering a name, uploading a file or paying for a plan. Search within the documents for the exact words used for training, improvement, retention, deletion, sharing, memory, voice, profiling and advertising. Save a copy or note the date, because policies can change.
Use this checklist. “Not stated” is a meaningful result: it means you should ask the provider rather than assume the most favorable interpretation.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says companies must honor privacy commitments wherever those commitments appear. Its January 2024 Office of Technology guidance warns that retaining or using consumer data for another purpose without clear, conspicuous notice and affirmative express consent may create legal problems in the United States. The FTC’s formulation is direct: “There is no AI exemption from the laws on the books.” This is U.S. regulator guidance, not individualized legal advice.
Understand the data flow, including outside providers
Ask the provider to map a typical message: what is stored when you send it, which systems receive it to generate a reply, what is written into a durable memory, and what is deleted when you remove it. A service can keep a conversation in its own database while sending a copy to a separate model or voice provider.
What one published policy illustrates
AIGriefBot’s policy, last updated September 16, 2026, is an example of the questions to ask, not evidence about every griefbot. The policy states that the service does not sell user data and does not use content to train AI models. It also says conversation content and persona profiles are sent to an AI provider to generate replies, and voice recordings are sent to a voice provider. According to that policy, content remains while an account is active; users can access content in the app and delete a Companion or the account. It says durable-memory notes are shown to users and can be edited or deleted.

Those are the provider’s own published claims, not an independent audit. The policy does not let you generalize that every griefbot avoids training, sells no data, uses the same subprocessors or deletes downstream copies on the same schedule. For any service, ask whether deletion reaches model providers, voice systems, analytics vendors and backups, and request the expected completion time.
Share the minimum information necessary
Start with a low-detail account. You can test whether the interaction is useful without supplying a complete identity or an exhaustive biography.
- Leave out your full name, home address, phone number, workplace, school, exact dates of birth and other identifiers unless they are essential to a feature you deliberately choose.
- Do not enter passwords, authentication codes, bank details, tax numbers or copies of identity documents.
- Summarize medical, legal and financial circumstances instead of pasting records. Remove account numbers, diagnoses linked to identifiable people and precise locations when those details do not change the response you need.
- Generalize details about relatives, children, friends and colleagues. They may be identifiable even when your own name is absent.
- Use a description such as “my older relative” rather than a full name when the name adds no value to the memorial conversation.
- Assume that anything you type may be retained according to the policy. Do not rely on an informal promise in a chat window that conflicts with the written terms.
This is a precaution, not a guarantee that a provider will never receive or infer sensitive information. The less identifying material you provide, the less consequential an accidental disclosure or retention event can be.
Think carefully before uploading a voice, image or message archive
Uploads can be more identifying than text. A voice recording contains biometric characteristics; photos can reveal faces, locations and other people; message exports can expose entire conversations and contact details. Before uploading, answer four questions:
- What exact feature requires this file?
- Is the file sent to a named voice, image, video or AI provider?
- Is it used only to generate the requested output, or also for storage, improvement, analytics or advertising?
- Can you later remove the original file, generated asset and any derived profile?
Crop or redact unnecessary faces, addresses, message headers and metadata. Keep an original copy under your own control if the upload is irreplaceable, but do not upload it simply as a backup. Obtain permission from living people who appear in recordings or photographs where appropriate, and consider the wishes and dignity of the deceased person’s family.

Review memory and personalization features
Many griefbots maintain a profile or “memory” so that later replies remain consistent. That profile may contain distilled facts rather than the original conversation, which means deleting a chat may not delete the derived note.

Edit errors, remove details that no longer serve you, and disable the feature if the service cannot explain its retention. Ask whether a deleted memory can persist in logs, backups or a provider’s system. AIGriefBot’s policy says its durable-memory notes are visible in the app and can be edited or deleted; treat that as a service-specific control, not an industry standard.
Secure the account you do create
- Use a unique, long password that you do not reuse elsewhere.
- Turn on available multi-factor authentication or other additional sign-in protection.
- Do not share the account, recovery email or session with family members who want to read the memorial.
- Sign out of shared devices and review active sessions if the service provides that view.
- Keep your email account secure, because it may be the recovery path for the griefbot.
- Review connected apps and revoke access you no longer need.
AIGriefBot says it hashes passwords and uses HTTPS. Those statements describe measures claimed by that service; they are not proof of a complete security program, an independent audit or protection against every breach.
Test access, export and deletion controls
Do not wait until you are ready to leave to discover what “delete” means. Perform a small control test soon after signup, before building a large memorial archive.
- Open the account or privacy settings and identify the paths for viewing conversations, correcting account data and exporting content.
- Create a disposable test conversation and, if offered, a test memory or upload.
- Delete the test items using the documented control. Record the date and what the confirmation says will be removed.
- Check again after the provider’s stated deletion period. Look for the conversation, memory, upload and generated voice or image in every relevant section.
- Send support a written question asking whether deletion covers subprocessors, logs, backups, safety records and model-related artifacts. Request a specific time frame rather than “soon.”
- If the answer is incomplete, stop adding sensitive material and consider closing the account.
Deleting an account does not automatically prove that copies held by downstream providers or backups have disappeared. Only the specific provider can explain that scope. Keep confirmation emails and support tickets so you can demonstrate what you requested.

Know which legal protections may apply
United States
The FTC’s January 2024 privacy guidance applies its existing consumer-protection principles to AI services. A company should honor statements about confidentiality, training and retention, and should clearly disclose material data practices. The guidance is not a universal deletion right and does not replace advice about your state’s privacy law or your individual circumstances.
In September 2025, the FTC announced a 6(b) inquiry into AI companion-chatbot companies. The inquiry issued orders to seven companies seeking information about disclosures and the use or sharing of personal information from conversations. This is an investigation into company practices, not a finding that a particular griefbot broke the law.
United Kingdom
UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) guidance discusses data-protection rights at different stages of the AI lifecycle, including erasure, portability and information about AI training. The rights have qualifications that depend on the facts. The ICO page is marked as under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act, so check the live wording when making a request rather than relying on an old summary.
European Union
The European Commission’s Article 50 FAQ says providers of directly interactive AI systems such as chatbots must tell people they are interacting with AI unless that fact is obvious, with notice from the beginning of the first interaction. This is an AI-transparency duty, not a privacy seal. It does not by itself specify how long conversations are retained, whether they are used for training or how deletion works.

Compare griefbots without relying on marketing language
If you are choosing between services, make a side-by-side record using the same questions. Policy wording alone cannot establish that one provider is safer; look for specific scope, clear controls and answers that can be verified in the product.

Prefer a service that answers these questions plainly and provides working controls. Do not rank products solely because a policy uses reassuring adjectives such as “private,” “secure” or “confidential.”
Review your privacy settings over time
Set a calendar reminder every few months to check account permissions, memory entries, connected providers and policy-update notices. Re-read the policy after a major feature change, such as voice cloning, public sharing, family access or a new personalization mode. If a change introduces a new purpose or recipient and you cannot opt out, stop supplying new sensitive material until you understand the effect.

If you already overshared
- Stop sending additional sensitive information and change any password that was reused elsewhere.
- Delete conversations, memories, uploads and generated media through every available control.
- Request an account-data export so you can see what remains, if the service offers one.
- Send a written deletion request that names the categories and asks about subprocessors and backups.
- Remove connected apps, revoke active sessions and secure the recovery email.
- If you suspect fraud, harassment or immediate danger, contact the relevant platform, financial institution, law-enforcement agency or qualified professional rather than relying on the bot.
Keep copies of your requests and the provider’s replies. They help you track what was promised and decide whether continued use is appropriate.
