You cannot make a portfolio immune to a stock-market crash. You can, however, reduce avoidable damage by choosing an allocation that fits your goals and time horizon, diversifying both across asset classes and within them, keeping liquid money for near-term expenses, and following a written rebalancing plan. During a decline, avoid reflexively selling everything: Investor.gov warns that selling while prices are down can lock in losses and leave you out of a later recovery. The right response depends on your circumstances, not on a universal stock-and-bond formula.

What portfolio protection can—and cannot—do

A crash exposes several different risks at once. A concentrated holding can fall much more than the broad market; an allocation that is too aggressive for your deadline can force an uncomfortable sale; and a lack of cash for an unexpected bill can make you sell investments at the worst time. Good preparation addresses each risk separately.

Protection means reducing concentration, liquidity and decision-making risks while accepting that diversified investments can still lose value. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov explains that allocation, diversification and rebalancing are planning tools, not guarantees. Its Investor.gov Tips for 2026 – Investor Bulletin, dated March 31, 2026, likewise presents these concepts as general investor education rather than individualized advice.

  • Market risk remains: Stocks, bonds, funds and other investments can decline. No asset class is a guaranteed offset to a stock-market fall.
  • Diversification limits concentration: Spreading money across different investments can reduce the effect of one holding or category performing badly, but it cannot eliminate losses.
  • Liquidity prevents forced sales: Money reserved for imminent expenses can keep a temporary market decline from becoming a permanent sale.
  • A process controls behavior: A written allocation and rebalancing rule makes it less likely that a headline will dictate a large, irreversible trade.

Start with your plan, not the latest market headline

Asset allocation is the division of a portfolio among categories such as stocks, bonds and cash. The suitable mix is personal. Investor.gov identifies investment goals, time horizon, risk tolerance and financial circumstances as the main inputs. Risk tolerance includes both your willingness to see an account fluctuate and your ability to absorb a loss without jeopardizing a goal.

Match the mix to the goal’s deadline

A goal due soon has less time to recover from a large decline than a goal several decades away. For a short-horizon goal, consider whether the amount needed and its date can withstand a substantial price swing. A distant retirement goal may allow more time for volatility, but only if you can continue following the plan during a decline. Do not infer a suitable percentage from someone else’s age, income or portfolio.

Planning question Why it matters in a crash What to document
What is the money for? A required withdrawal and a discretionary objective do not have the same consequences if markets fall. The goal, dollar amount and priority.
When will you need it? The recovery time available depends on the deadline. A target date or range, plus any earlier date at which money might be needed.
How much loss can you financially withstand? Needing to sell after a fall is different from being able to leave the investment untouched. Income stability, debt obligations, other assets and expected withdrawals.
How much volatility can you tolerate? A plan you abandon in panic is not a workable plan, even if it looked suitable on paper. Your reaction to a hypothetical decline and the largest loss you could accept without changing course.
What liquidity is required? Near-term bills should not depend on selling a volatile holding on a particular day. Expected expenses, emergency needs and where that cash will be held.

Review when your circumstances change

Revisit the plan when a goal, deadline, income source, debt burden or family obligation changes. A category that recently performed well or poorly is not, by itself, a reason to change the target allocation. Changing the plan solely to chase the last winner can turn a long-term strategy into repeated market timing.

Diversify across asset classes and within each one

Investor.gov defines diversification as “The practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.” In practical terms, it has two layers: spreading exposure among asset classes and spreading exposure among holdings inside each class.

Check asset-class concentration

Review how much of the portfolio depends on stocks, bonds, cash or any other category you use. A portfolio can contain several funds and still have one dominant risk—for example, multiple funds may all be heavily exposed to the same type of stock. The objective is not to own a long list of securities; it is to avoid having one category determine the result of the whole account.

Check concentration within a category

Look through each fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) to see its sectors, regions and largest holdings. A narrowly focused fund is not automatically diversified simply because it contains many securities. Two funds can also own many of the same companies, so count overlapping top holdings rather than counting fund names. Broadly spread funds can make diversification easier, but their actual breadth and concentration still need to be checked.

Use a simple overlap review

  1. List every fund, ETF, individual security and significant cash position.
  2. Record each holding’s asset class, geographic or sector focus and largest positions.
  3. Group exposures that would likely respond to the same economic or market event.
  4. Estimate how much of the total portfolio is represented by each group, including overlaps.
  5. Compare the result with the allocation you chose for your goals and risk capacity.

This review can reveal that several apparently different funds are exposed to the same companies or sector. It does not predict which investment will perform best; it identifies where a single outcome could dominate your account.

Keep cash available for near-term and emergency needs

Investor.gov’s Introduction to Investing describes an emergency fund as money many investors set aside for a rainy day so an unexpected expense does not require borrowing. The practical portfolio benefit is liquidity: you have an alternative to selling a declining investment to pay an immediate bill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The source does not prescribe a universal emergency-fund size. Your required amount depends on expenses, income reliability, insurance, debt and other resources. Keep the reserve in a vehicle whose value and access are appropriate for the purpose; do not treat a volatile investment as guaranteed spending money. Separate money for known near-term withdrawals from money intended for a long-term objective, and make sure both amounts are reflected in your plan.

Write a crash plan before you need it

A short written policy turns general intentions into decisions you can follow under stress. Include the target allocation, the circumstances that trigger a review, the rebalancing method, the source of near-term cash and the people you will consult for tax or financial questions.

  1. State the purpose and horizon of each account. Note which goals are essential, their target dates and any expected withdrawals.
  2. Set target ranges. Record the intended allocation among your chosen asset classes and, if useful, an acceptable range around each target. The percentages must come from your circumstances, not a generic model.
  3. List diversification checks. Identify sector, geographic and top-holding concentration limits you are willing to accept, and schedule a review of fund holdings.
  4. Define rebalancing triggers. Choose either a calendar review, a predetermined drift threshold, or a combination, while recognizing that taxes and trading costs may affect implementation.
  5. Define a communication rule. Decide what information you will review during a sharp decline and which headlines or social-media claims you will ignore.
  6. Record the exception process. If your goal, horizon, income or ability to bear risk changes, document why the allocation may need a genuine plan change rather than a reaction to price movement.

What to do when the market is falling

Volatility can make a major portfolio change feel urgent. Investor.gov cautions investors to avoid rash decisions and says that selling all stock assets during a decline can create significant losses and cause an investor to miss gains if markets recover. Its article Is It Time to Rebalance Your Investment Portfolio? states: “Jumping totally out of the market and trying to time the market may not be the best long-term investment strategy.”

That warning is not a promise that markets recover on a particular schedule, nor does it require you to hold every security indefinitely. It is a warning against reflexive market timing. Use this sequence instead:

  1. Pause the headline-driven trade. Check whether a real change occurred in your goal, deadline, income, risk capacity or the investment itself. A market index falling is not, by itself, evidence that your personal plan changed.
  2. Confirm your cash position. Make sure money for imminent expenses remains available. If it does not, address the liquidity gap deliberately rather than selling a long-term holding without considering consequences.
  3. Compare current weights with targets. Determine whether market movement has caused drift. Do not assume that a decline in one category automatically makes another category suitable for purchase.
  4. Apply the written rebalancing rule. If a trigger has been reached, make the smallest transaction or contribution change that restores the policy, after reviewing taxes and fees.
  5. Escalate personal questions. For retirement withdrawals, concentrated employer stock, taxable gains, debt pressure or a changed life circumstance, consider a qualified financial or tax professional.

Rebalance deliberately rather than predictively

Rebalancing returns a portfolio to its chosen allocation after market movements have pushed it away from the target. It is maintenance, not a forecast of which asset will rise next. Investor.gov describes two common approaches and notes that rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently.

Approach How it works Advantages Trade-offs to check
Calendar review Review on a schedule, such as every six or twelve months, then act only if the portfolio still needs adjustment. Simple, predictable and easy to document. The portfolio may drift between reviews; the example intervals are not universal rules.
Threshold review Act when an asset class moves outside a predetermined percentage or percentage-point range. Responds to meaningful drift rather than every small movement. Requires monitoring and a clear threshold; frequent small trades can add cost.
Contribution-directed Send new contributions toward an underweight category instead of immediately selling an overweight one. May reduce transactions and can restore weights gradually. Works only when contributions are large enough and the available investments fit the target.

Use the least disruptive method that works

You can rebalance by selling part of an overweight category and buying an underweight one, by directing new money to the underweight category, or by combining both. In a taxable account, a sale may create a taxable gain or loss; any account can have trading fees, spreads or other costs. Review those consequences before placing an order. A tax professional can help with the treatment that applies to your jurisdiction and account type.

Understand the 60-to-80 example

Investor.gov uses a hypothetical example in which a portfolio that began at 60% stocks becomes 80% stocks after stock gains. The example illustrates how drift can change risk; it is not a recommended allocation, a prediction or a performance statistic. The same calculation applies in either direction: market movement can leave you with more or less exposure than your plan intended.

Contributions and automatic features

Ongoing contributions can be a practical way to move an underweight category toward its target without selling immediately. Check the destination of automatic deposits, workplace-plan contributions and dividend reinvestments; they can gradually change the portfolio’s weights. An automatic feature does not make the resulting allocation appropriate, so review it against your written targets.

Some target-date funds use an allocation that changes as a stated target date approaches. They can simplify implementation, but the glide path, underlying holdings, fees and risk level still need to be compatible with your goal. A target date does not guarantee a particular account value or protect against a crash.

Common mistakes that increase crash damage

  • Searching for a guaranteed hedge: No stock, bond, cash position, fund or strategy is established here as a guaranteed shield against losses.
  • Confusing more funds with diversification: Overlapping holdings or a narrow sector focus can leave the same concentration risk underneath several fund names.
  • Changing allocation after a single hot or weak period: Recent performance alone does not establish a new goal, horizon or risk capacity.
  • Selling everything in a panic: This can lock in a loss and leave you unable to participate in a later recovery; it also turns a temporary price move into a permanent result.
  • Rebalancing too often: Constant trading can create taxes, fees and new timing decisions. Use a defined trigger and review it only as often as your plan requires.
  • Ignoring liquidity: An investment account is not the same thing as an emergency reserve. Selling under pressure can undermine a long-term plan.
  • Treating general guidance as personal advice: Retirement rules, tax treatment, debt obligations and concentrated positions can materially change the appropriate action.

A practical review checklist

Use this checklist before the next downturn and whenever your circumstances change:

  • Have you written the goal, deadline and expected withdrawals for each major account?
  • Does the allocation reflect both your willingness and your financial ability to tolerate a loss?
  • Have you reviewed the asset class, sector, geographic and top-holding exposure inside every fund or ETF?
  • Have you checked for overlapping holdings across funds?
  • Is money for emergencies and near-term bills held separately from long-term investments?
  • What exact calendar date or drift threshold triggers a review?
  • Will new contributions be directed to an underweight category before you sell anything?
  • Have you considered transaction costs and possible tax consequences?
  • What change in your life would justify revisiting the target allocation?
  • Who will help with a tax-sensitive or unusually complex decision?

When professional guidance is worth considering

General investor education cannot determine your personal allocation. Consider qualified financial advice when you are close to a major withdrawal, have several taxable accounts, own a highly concentrated position, face a job or health change, or are deciding whether a sale will create a significant tax liability. A qualified tax professional can address tax treatment; a qualified financial professional can help connect allocation and rebalancing choices to your goals and risk capacity. Ask how the person is compensated, what services are provided and what assumptions support the recommendation.

Bottom line

The most durable crash response is prepared and proportional: choose an allocation that fits your own goals, horizon and capacity for loss; diversify without assuming diversification eliminates risk; maintain liquidity for near-term needs; and rebalance according to a rule that accounts for taxes and costs. When prices fall, follow that process and investigate genuine changes in your circumstances instead of letting fear or a market headline make the decision for you.
