You can reduce the chance that someone will access your photos, but you cannot reliably stop misuse once an image has been copied. Limit who can see clear face photos, review what is already public, and be selective about apps you upload images to. If someone creates or shares a nonconsensual intimate deepfake, report it promptly and use the available removal tools; these steps can help limit spread, but cannot guarantee that every copy will be found.
What you can do before posting photos
The FBI warns that photos posted online—including photos of family and friends—can be used to create deepfakes and other AI-generated content. Its advice is to be cautious about what you share and who can see it. That reduces easy access; it is not a technical barrier against someone who has already saved an image. Limit the audience
- Set profiles and individual posts to the audience you actually intend, and periodically review older posts and public profile images.
- Share fewer high-resolution, clear face photos publicly when there is no good reason to make them public.
- For family photos, ask permission where appropriate and use tighter sharing controls, especially for images of children.
These steps can reduce who can readily access a photo. They cannot recall copies that someone has downloaded, reposted, or otherwise obtained.
Be selective about photo uploads
Before uploading personal photos to an unfamiliar app or website, consider whether you trust its data practices and whether the service needs the image. Deleting your copy from one service does not remove copies that other people may have saved or reposted.

Do not rely on image tweaks as protection
Cropping, blurring, lowering resolution, or adding a watermark is not established as a reliable way to prevent AI misuse. A watermark or provenance metadata may help communicate information about an image’s origin or edits when supported, but neither stops copying or manipulation.
What to do if someone posts a deepfake
Preserve useful evidence and report the post
- Where safe and lawful, record details such as the post URL, account name, date, and screenshots. Avoid resharing the image to ask for help.
- Report the content through the platform’s reporting process and request removal. The FTC says reporting options vary and may be available in a content menu or the platform’s help center. FTC guidance on the Take It Down Act and reporting.
- If the image is intimate and you are an adult with a copy, consider using StopNCII. For a minor’s intimate image, the FTC points to NCMEC’s Take It Down and CyberTipline.
- If a covered U.S. platform has no working request process or fails to remove qualifying material within the statutory period, the FTC says you can report the platform to the agency.
If someone is blackmailing you or there is an immediate safety concern, do not pay or send more images; the FTC advises reporting the perpetrator to law enforcement. Reporting and legal options vary by location. This is general information, not legal advice.

Know the limits of the U.S. removal deadline
Under the FTC’s summary of the Take It Down Act, covered platforms must remove qualifying nonconsensual intimate images and known identical copies within 48 hours after receiving a valid request. The scope includes real, digitally altered, and AI-generated deepfake intimate images. The deadline is not a general takedown guarantee for every altered photo, every website, or every country. It creates a digital fingerprint from an eligible image and shares that fingerprint—not the image itself—with participating platforms, which can scan for matches. It may help limit spread, but coverage depends on participating platforms and it cannot guarantee that every copy will be detected or removed. The FTC describes the tool and related response options in its guidance for people targeted by nonconsensual intimate image abuse.

What watermarks, metadata, and detection tools can—and cannot—do
Provenance metadata can convey information about a content item’s origin and editing history. Watermarks can signal information about content, though they often carry less detail. These are transparency and attribution approaches, not locks on an image. Metadata may not travel with a file, so missing credentials do not prove an image is fake; their presence does not prove that the depicted scene is true.
NIST’s technical overview surveys approaches including content provenance, watermarking, synthetic-media detection, and prevention of nonconsensual intimate imagery. It describes a technical landscape, not evidence that consumers can make shared photos immune to deepfakes. NIST overview of approaches to synthetic-content risks. Identity checks are a separate problem. NIST guidance for identity-service providers says live document capture and presentation-attack detection offer some protection against forged media in remote identity proofing, but do not address every case. That guidance is not a consumer recommendation to buy a particular camera, webcam, or detection app. NIST SP 800-63A identity-proofing guidance.

Removal and verification are different tasks. If an unusual or out-of-character image or video appears, the FBI recommends checking trusted sources or looking for official confirmation before accepting or sharing it. A provenance signal may offer context when available, but it does not establish that a scene is true. For nonconsensual intimate imagery, use the platform’s reporting and removal process rather than treating verification as a substitute for a takedown request. FBI guidance on evaluating deepfakes.
