There is no WhatsApp switch that can guarantee protection from a remote-access trojan (RAT). A RAT is malicious software on the phone that can operate at the endpoint, where it may steal WhatsApp’s authentication key and send messages as you. Protect yourself in two separate layers: keep malware off the device, then harden the WhatsApp account against takeover. WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption protects messages while they travel between endpoints; it does not disinfect an infected phone or stop malware that can use an already-authenticated app.
The practical baseline is straightforward: install only the official WhatsApp app, keep Android or iOS and security updates current, leave Android Play Protect enabled, use WhatsApp two-step verification and a passkey when offered, never share the six-digit registration code, and review Linked Devices. If you suspect compromise, recover the account and remediate the phone as two distinct tasks.
What “WhatsApp remote-access trojan” means
“WhatsApp RAT” is a description of a threat, not the name of one known malware family or a confirmed mass campaign. The relevant mechanism is ordinary phone malware with enough access to control the device, read sensitive information, or abuse an authenticated WhatsApp installation. Meta’s explanation of device verification says malware on an endpoint can steal WhatsApp’s authentication key and impersonate the account by sending messages. There is no reliable public statistic in the available official material for RAT prevalence, infection rates, or the percentage of attacks stopped by any one control. Treat every defensive measure below as risk reduction, not a promise of perfect detection.
Use two protection layers, not one
Account controls and device controls solve different problems. Apply both, and diagnose them separately when something goes wrong.

An unfamiliar linked session is evidence that account access may have been exposed; it is not, by itself, proof that the phone contains a RAT. Conversely, a clean linked-device list does not prove that the handset is malware-free.

Install the official WhatsApp client
Get WhatsApp from the official app store for your platform and update it there. Do not install modified clients, “premium” builds, APKs sent in chats, or versions promoted through unsolicited links. Meta’s security engineering team states: “These unofficial apps put users’ security at risk – and it is why we encourage everyone using WhatsApp to use the official WhatsApp app.” Read the full explanation at Meta Engineering.
On Android, an APK offered outside Google Play is not automatically malware, but an unsolicited or modified WhatsApp package is an unnecessary risk because it can include code that steals credentials or changes app behavior. On iPhone, avoid profiles, enterprise certificates, or sideloading instructions that you cannot verify. If a message says you must install a special WhatsApp version to view a photo, join a group, or fix a ban, close it instead of following the link.
Keep the operating system and security fixes current
Install Android system updates, Android security updates, or iOS updates as soon as your phone maker makes them available. Google includes current Android and security updates in its malware-removal guidance, and Apple recommends updating before enabling Lockdown Mode. Updates close vulnerabilities that a malicious app or an exploit may use, although being current is not proof that a phone has never been compromised.
Use the phone’s normal update screen rather than a link in a message. If the phone is too old to receive security updates, reduce the number of accounts and sensitive tasks performed on it and plan a replacement; a WhatsApp setting cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system.

Check Android Play Protect
Google Play Protect scans apps installed from Google Play and can also check apps from other sources. It may warn about, disable, or remove an app it identifies as harmful. A scan result is useful evidence, but a clean result is not a forensic guarantee that no sophisticated malware is present.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, then choose Play Protect.
- Review the status and open Scan (or Scan apps, depending on the Android version).
- In Play Protect settings, confirm that Scan apps with Play Protect is enabled. Leave the option to improve harmful-app detection enabled if it is offered.
- Follow any removal or disable instructions, then restart the phone and install pending Android and security updates.

Be conservative with powerful permissions
Review newly installed apps and remove anything you do not recognize or no longer need. Be especially cautious when an unrelated app requests Accessibility, notification access, device-administrator control, a VPN profile, the ability to install unknown apps, or broad access to files and messages. Those permissions can be legitimate for particular tools, but they also give harmful software more ways to observe or control the phone. The available official guidance does not establish a WhatsApp-specific permission checklist, so use this as general hygiene rather than as a diagnostic test.
If an app refuses to uninstall, first revoke its administrator, accessibility, VPN, or similar control in the phone’s Settings, then try again. The exact menu names vary by Android manufacturer and iOS version; do not grant a permission merely because a pop-up claims it is required to keep WhatsApp working.
Harden WhatsApp account access
Turn on two-step verification
Two-step verification adds a PIN that is required when your number is registered with WhatsApp again. It is separate from the six-digit registration code sent by SMS or voice call. Open WhatsApp → Settings → Account → Two-step verification → Enable (on some Android versions, tap the three-dot menu before Settings). Add an email address that you control so WhatsApp can send a reset link if you forget the PIN, and keep that email account protected with its own strong authentication.
Do not choose a PIN that you reuse for banking, email, or your phone unlock code. WhatsApp’s Help Center describes two-step verification, passkeys, passwords, and app lock as account safeguards; see Account security tips.
Set a passkey when WhatsApp offers it
A passkey can let you verify a re-registration with the phone’s screen lock, fingerprint, or face authentication instead of relying only on an SMS code. Availability depends on your account, device, operating-system version, and WhatsApp rollout. In WhatsApp, look under Settings → Account → Passkeys; if the option is present, follow the enrollment prompts and keep your device lock private.

Meta announced in August 2026 that more than 1 billion people had set up a WhatsApp passkey. That is a Meta-reported adoption figure, not an independent measurement of RAT infections or proof that passkeys prevent every compromise. The same announcement described stronger, longer two-step-verification passwords and support for multiple passkeys as features rolling out to Android and iOS users; your app may not yet show every control. Never give the WhatsApp registration code to anyone, including a person claiming to be WhatsApp support, a friend who says they mistyped your number, or someone offering to “verify” your account. The code can be delivered by SMS or an automated call, but it is still a secret. WhatsApp states: “You should never share your registration code with others, not even friends or family.”
If you receive a code you did not request, do not enter it anywhere and do not forward it. Change your two-step-verification PIN if you think someone learned it, and investigate your account and device rather than responding to the sender.
Review Linked Devices regularly
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings → Linked Devices (Android users may first tap the three-dot menu).
- Inspect each listed browser, computer, or phone and its recent activity.
- Tap any session you do not recognize and choose Log out. If several entries are unfamiliar, log out of all of them and sign in again only on devices you trust.
Linked Devices review addresses unauthorized sessions. It does not scan the handset, and an unknown session does not prove that a RAT is installed. Keep this check as part of account security, not as a substitute for Play Protect or operating-system remediation.
Use app lock and secure recovery channels
Enable WhatsApp’s app lock if your version provides it, using the phone’s biometric or device-authentication mechanism. This helps when someone has physical access to an unlocked or briefly unattended phone; it does not stop malware already running with sufficient privileges.

Protect the email address used for two-step-verification recovery, your Apple Account or Google Account, and your phone’s screen lock. If an attacker controls those recovery channels, changing a WhatsApp setting alone may not hold.
Optional lockdown settings for higher-risk people
WhatsApp Strict Account Settings
Meta announced Strict Account Settings on 27 January 2026 as an optional lockdown-style feature. The announced behavior includes blocking attachments and media from unknown senders, silencing calls from unknown people, and restricting other settings. Those restrictions can reduce exposure to unsolicited content but may also limit normal WhatsApp functionality. Meta said the feature was rolling out over the following weeks, so availability depends on your app version and account. Details are in Meta’s announcement.

This is most relevant to people who may be singled out for sophisticated attacks, not a requirement for every user. Check the feature’s description in WhatsApp before enabling it so you understand which calls, media, or settings will be restricted.
Apple Lockdown Mode
Lockdown Mode is a system-wide Apple option for the very small number of people at risk of highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. Apple says, “Most people will never be targeted by attacks of this nature.” It limits features and changes how some services handle attachments, links, web content, calls, and other requests, so usability is intentionally reduced.

Update the iPhone first, then open Settings → Privacy & Security → Lockdown Mode and review the affected features before turning it on. Apple’s explanation and current limitations are at About Lockdown Mode. Lockdown Mode is not a routine WhatsApp antivirus control and cannot repair an already infected phone.

Signs that deserve investigation
No single symptom proves a WhatsApp RAT. Battery drain, heat, crashes, unexpected data use, or a slow phone have many benign causes. Investigate promptly when several indicators appear together or when there is a concrete account event.
- WhatsApp sends messages, changes profile details, or joins groups without your action.
- You receive a registration code that you did not request, or WhatsApp logs you out unexpectedly.
- A new entry appears in Linked Devices and you cannot explain it.
- An unfamiliar app appears, requests unusually powerful permissions, or resists removal.
- Android Play Protect reports a harmful app, or iPhone displays an alert that a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened.
- Contacts report suspicious messages from you that are absent from your own chat history or were sent while you were not using the phone.
Preserve useful information before deleting things: note times, take screenshots of alerts and linked sessions, and record the app name and permissions. Do not install a “WhatsApp cleaner” offered by a message or pop-up.

1. Recover the WhatsApp account
If the phone is safe to use and WhatsApp still opens, follow the official recovery process. Re-register your phone number by entering the six-digit SMS or voice-call code in WhatsApp. WhatsApp says this logs out other devices. Never give that code to another person. If the app asks for a two-step-verification PIN that you do not know, WhatsApp documents that a seven-day wait may apply in some circumstances.
Use WhatsApp’s “How to recover a compromised account” instructions for the current prompts and exceptions. After you regain access, enable two-step verification, set a passkey if offered, and inspect Linked Devices.

2. Contain suspicious device activity
Stop using the suspect phone for banking, password resets, or other high-value actions until you have assessed it. If you can do so safely, disconnect it from Wi-Fi and mobile data while you gather information; understand that this may interrupt account recovery or remote support. Use a different device you trust to change passwords and recovery options, and avoid signing in to sensitive services on the suspect handset.
3. Remediate an Android phone
- Run the Play Protect scan described earlier.
- Uninstall unfamiliar or flagged apps. Revoke device-administrator, accessibility, VPN, and similar privileges first if Android blocks removal.
- Install all available Android and security updates, then restart.
- Check whether the suspicious behavior stops and whether new warnings appear.
- If signs remain, follow Google’s malware-removal guidance. Google says a factory reset or help from the phone manufacturer may be needed when persistent signs do not clear.
A reset erases local data, so make sure photographs, contacts, and authenticator recovery information are backed up in a way you trust. Do not restore an unknown APK or a complete device image that may reintroduce the malicious app.
4. Respond to an Apple malware warning
If iPhone or iPad says a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened, Apple’s instruction is to delete the app. Do not bypass the warning simply to keep using the application. Follow Apple’s malware-alert guidance, update iOS, and contact Apple or the app developer through official channels if you need help identifying what was removed.

There is no universal cross-platform forensic procedure that proves a phone is clean after a suspected WhatsApp RAT. If the compromise involves a journalist, activist, executive, domestic-abuse situation, financial theft, or other sensitive targeting, use the phone maker’s official support or a qualified incident-response professional. Keep the handset available for professional examination if evidence matters; wiping it may remove useful artifacts.
6. Warn contacts and repair trust
From a device you believe is safe, tell contacts that suspicious messages may have come from your account and ask them not to open links or send money. Update passwords and account-recovery options after the phone is remediated, prioritizing the email, Apple Account, Google Account, and phone number that can reset WhatsApp. This notification step is practical incident response, not proof that every recipient was affected.
Common mistakes that leave a gap
- Assuming encryption equals endpoint security: encryption does not stop malware operating inside an authenticated phone.
- Turning on two-step verification and stopping there: the PIN protects registration; it does not remove an app that is already spying.
- Treating a clean Play Protect result as a certificate: Google describes scanning and responses, not perfect coverage of every threat.
- Logging out one unknown device but ignoring the handset: session cleanup and device remediation are separate jobs.
- Installing a second unofficial security app from a pop-up: the “fix” may be the malware.
- Using Lockdown Mode casually: it is designed for a small, high-risk population and intentionally reduces functionality.
- Restoring everything after a reset without checking: a malicious app or unsafe configuration can return with the backup.
A maintenance checklist
- WhatsApp came from the official app store and is updated.
- Android or iOS and the phone’s security updates are current.
- Android Play Protect scanning is enabled and has been run recently.
- Two-step verification is enabled with a unique PIN and protected recovery email.
- A WhatsApp passkey is enrolled if the feature is offered on the device.
- The six-digit registration code is treated as secret.
- App lock is enabled where practical.
- Linked Devices contains only sessions you recognize.
- Unneeded apps and powerful permissions have been removed.
- High-risk users have considered Strict Account Settings or Lockdown Mode after reading their limitations.
Review this list after major phone changes, a lost device, an unexpected registration code, or a suspicious message. The goal is layered resilience: make installation harder, make account takeover harder, and have a recovery path that does not assume a compromised phone is trustworthy.
