Keep your phone shaded, dry, and away from loose sand, surf, saltwater, and sunscreen. A water-resistance rating is model-specific and based on controlled tests; it is not a guarantee that a phone is safe to use in the ocean. If the phone gets wet or contaminated, follow the maker’s instructions, let it dry fully, and do not charge it through a cable while moisture may remain.
The simplest beach routine is to check your exact model’s guidance before you leave, keep the phone stowed when you are not using it, and clean exposure gently rather than reaching for household products or heat. A properly sized pouch may add a useful barrier, but it does not replace careful handling or the manufacturer’s instructions.
Why the beach is hard on a phone
Beach hazards can act together: saltwater can affect seals, grit can scratch a surface or work into openings, sunscreen can leave residue, and heat can push a device outside its recommended operating conditions. A phone’s resistance to water or dust does not eliminate these risks. Protecting a phone at the beach is therefore less about finding one magic accessory and more about limiting exposure, checking the model-specific instructions, and responding carefully if something gets on the device.
Start with the support guide for your exact model. Ratings and instructions vary, and resistance can be reduced by wear, damage, repair, or disassembly. Google says Pixel 10’s IP68 protection applies when the phone leaves the factory and that the device is not dustproof or waterproof. Samsung also cautions that water resistance may diminish over time. In practice, an old rating should not be treated as a permanent promise, especially if the phone has been dropped, cracked, opened, or repaired.

IP test figures are not beach-use recommendations. Apple’s support article, published March 17, 2026, lists certain iPhone models rated IP68 at a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes, with model groups and test conditions varying. Samsung describes lab testing of IP-rated phones in fresh water up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes as of April 2026. Neither figure establishes safe use in seawater, wet surf, or loose sand. The figures describe particular test conditions; they should not be read as permission to take a phone swimming or to expose it repeatedly to water.
Fresh water in a controlled test is also not the same as salty ocean water. Samsung specifically warns that saltwater and chlorine can deteriorate seals and lower water resistance. Even a phone whose rating sounds reassuring can be a poor candidate for deliberate beach exposure. Keep it out of the sea and away from splashes rather than trying to test its limits.
Prepare your phone before you go
Check your model’s limits
Look up the exact phone’s water and dust rating, temperature range, and liquid-contact instructions. Do not assume that another phone from the same brand—or even another model in the same family—has identical protection. When checking guidance, look for the model name and region, then note what the maker says about dust, liquid contact, cleaning, drying, and charging after moisture exposure.
A cracked device or one that has been opened or repaired should not be treated as though its original resistance is unchanged. The same caution applies if the device is older or has visible damage: manufacturer guidance notes that resistance can weaken over time or after damage and repair. If you are uncertain whether a past repair or crack affects the phone, follow the manufacturer’s support instructions instead of relying on the label alone.
Keep it stowed, shaded, and dry
- Keep the phone in a shaded, dry bag or pocket when you are not using it. Avoid leaving it in direct sun or setting it on loose sand. A closed, dry place also helps reduce casual contact with sunscreen-coated hands and windblown grit.
- If you need to use it near wet sand, splashes, or surf, consider a correctly sized waterproof phone pouch as an extra barrier. Samsung also points to a separately sold water-resistant phone case in its saltwater guidance. Neither accessory makes ocean use automatically safe.
- Check that a pouch fits your phone and its camera and buttons, closes securely, and is undamaged. Confirm the maker’s stated protection and the conditions behind it; do not assume a pouch is suitable for swimming or diving unless its product-specific claims support that use.
- After applying sunscreen, use clean, dry hands to handle the phone or keep it stowed until your hands are clean. This is a practical precaution, not a manufacturer-specified waiting interval.
- Take the phone out only when you have a reason to use it, and put it away again before returning to the water or handling sunscreen. Fewer moments of exposure mean fewer chances for sand, spray, or residue to reach the device.
A pouch is optional protection, not a substitute for keeping the phone away from water. No particular pouch or case has been tested here. If you compare products, treat “waterproof” or “water-resistant” as a claim to verify rather than as a guarantee: fit, closure, condition, and the stated test conditions all matter.
Keep sand, sunscreen, and saltwater off the phone
Sand and dust
Keep the phone off loose sand, and avoid opening its SIM tray or exposing ports while grit is on the exterior. Sand on a surface can be dragged across it if you rub too hard, so do not grind visible grains across the screen or finish. If the phone is dusty, first move away from the source of the sand; cleaning it while more grit is blowing around can simply add more debris.
If dust or dirt lands on it, gently wipe the phone with a soft lint-free cloth. Apple advises ensuring the phone is free of dust before opening the SIM tray and warns against using cleaning products or compressed air for dust. A soft microfiber cloth is a useful item to bring because it can be used for gentle exterior wiping; it is not a protective barrier and should not be treated as a way to scrub abrasive grains away.

Do not push a cotton bud, paper towel, or other object into a charging connector. Apple warns against inserting foreign objects into the connector. The same basic caution applies to the idea of trying to dislodge grit by poking inside an opening: follow the cleaning instructions for the exact model rather than inserting something that could cause damage.
Sunscreen
Apple lists sunscreen among the liquids to minimize exposing an iPhone to, and Samsung includes it among unclean liquids. Sunscreen is easy to transfer from fingers to a screen, buttons, or other surfaces, so avoid handling the phone with sunscreen-coated fingers. A practical habit is to clean and dry your hands before picking up the phone, or to leave it stowed until you are done applying sunscreen and your hands are clean. There is no manufacturer-specified wait time in the reviewed guidance.
If sunscreen gets on the device, use the cleaning steps in the guide for that exact model rather than improvising with household cleaners. The fact that a substance looks like a smear does not mean it is safe to wipe with a cleaning product or to treat like ordinary dust. Apple’s liquid guidance says to rinse the affected area with tap water when a liquid other than water splashes on an iPhone, then wipe it with a soft lint-free cloth. Samsung’s guidance includes sunscreen among unclean liquids; follow the instructions for the particular device and region.
Saltwater and surf
Keep the phone away from seawater and wet surf, even if it has an IP rating. Samsung says its IP testing uses fresh water in laboratory conditions and warns that saltwater and chlorine can deteriorate seals and reduce water resistance. Its official guidance says, “Do not expose the device to salt water or ionized water.” A brief splash is not a reason to assume that the phone is ruined, but it is a reason to follow the proper cleaning and drying instructions promptly.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not confuse an advertised depth or duration with a safe-use recommendation. The Apple and Samsung test figures above are tied to particular models and controlled fresh-water conditions; they do not establish what will happen in moving surf, seawater, or repeated exposure. Keeping a phone in a dry place is a more dependable prevention strategy than relying on its rating to handle the beach.
What to do if your phone gets exposed
1. Move it away from the hazard
Take the phone out of the sand, away from surf, or away from the sunscreen spill. If it is wet, do not connect a cable or accessory. Check the model’s manufacturer instructions before cleaning because the recommended response depends on the kind of liquid and the device. If the phone is in a pouch, remove it carefully and check whether the phone or inside of the pouch is wet; the pouch is not proof that the phone stayed dry.
Separate the problem into what happened: loose dust or sand on the exterior, a non-water liquid such as sunscreen, or saltwater exposure. That distinction matters because the cleaning directions are not identical. Resist the impulse to scrub, blow compressed air into openings, or plug the phone in to see whether it still works while moisture may remain.

2. Follow the maker’s cleaning instructions
For iPhone, Apple says to rinse the affected area with tap water when a liquid other than water splashes on it, then wipe it with a soft lint-free cloth. Samsung advises washing a Galaxy exposed to saltwater with fresh water and drying it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. These instructions are brand-specific; use the exact guidance for your device rather than assuming one maker’s steps apply to another.
For sand or dust, gently wipe the exterior with a soft lint-free cloth. Do not use compressed air or cleaning products for dust, and do not insert anything into the charging port. Apple also advises making sure the device is free of dust before opening the SIM tray. Avoid opening trays or working around a connector while visible grit remains on the outside, because you do not want to carry debris into an opening.
Use a clean, soft cloth for the drying and wiping steps described by the maker. A paper towel or cotton bud is not a substitute for a lint-free cloth, particularly around the charging connector; Apple explicitly warns against putting foreign objects such as these into the port. If you are unsure whether a step is appropriate for a particular phone, defer to its support guide rather than trying multiple cleaning methods.
3. Air-dry it without heat
Leave the phone in a dry place with airflow. Do not use a hair dryer, heater, or other external heat source to speed drying. Apple and Google both warn against external heat when drying a wet phone. The beach may already be hot, but direct sun or added heat is not a drying method supported by the manufacturer guidance.
Do not charge through a cable until the phone and its port are dry. Apple’s guidance says to wait at least five hours before cable charging after liquid exposure. That is Apple-specific advice, not a universal drying time or guarantee that another phone is dry. Samsung says to dry a wet Galaxy thoroughly and allow it to air-dry. Follow your own manufacturer’s instruction and do not interpret a set number of hours from another brand as an all-clear.
Do not attach a cable or accessory simply to check whether the connector works. The key instruction is to wait until the phone and port are dry before cable charging. If the maker’s guidance calls for more time or a different response, use that model-specific direction.
4. Get support if there is damage or a warning
If the phone is cracked, has been repaired or disassembled, shows a liquid warning, or malfunctions after exposure, do not rely on its former water-resistance rating. Follow the manufacturer’s support instructions. A warning or changed behavior is a reason to stop treating the phone as though it is unaffected, not an invitation to repeatedly test the connector or retry charging.

Ratings and warranty terms are not universal across brands or regions. How to choose extra protection
A pouch or case can create a barrier between the phone and beach conditions, but the useful question is what protection the specific accessory claims under what conditions—not whether its name sounds waterproof. Compare options using these checks:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Coverage: Does the accessory state protection against splashes, immersion, or fine sand? These are different claims. A product intended to guard against splashes should not automatically be assumed to protect during submersion, and a water claim does not by itself explain protection from sand.
- Fit: Is it verified for your phone’s size, camera layout, and buttons? A pouch that does not fit the device properly may interfere with the camera or controls and may not close as intended.
- Evidence: Is a protection rating or test condition provided by the maker or an independent testing body? Look for the conditions behind the claim instead of assuming a rating means the accessory can be used in every water setting.
- Usability: Can you operate the touchscreen and camera through the barrier as needed? If you cannot reliably use the phone while it is protected, consider whether you need to take it out at all.
- Closure and condition: Can you inspect the closure and check for damage before use? A closure that is not secure or an accessory that is visibly damaged should not be treated as a dependable barrier.
- Dryness: Can the phone and the inside of the accessory stay dry and usable? An accessory’s exterior can be wet while you still need to confirm the phone and interior remain dry.
A soft microfiber cloth is useful for gentle exterior wiping, but it does not protect a phone while it is exposed. A pouch is the more relevant optional item when the goal is to add a barrier, but no specific pouch or case has been tested or endorsed here. These are evaluation criteria, not product test results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Heat: shade is safer than a quick fix
Keep the phone out of direct sun where possible, and check its own operating-temperature instructions. Apple says not to operate an iPhone outside its suggested temperature range and not to use an external heat source to dry it. There is no single beach temperature threshold established here that applies to every phone, so use the model-specific guide. Avoid treating a temperature figure for one phone as a universal limit for another model.
If the device gets wet, airflow—not added heat—is the appropriate drying approach described in the manufacturer guidance. A hair dryer, heater, or other external heat source is not a shortcut supported by the reviewed sources. If the phone has been exposed to both heat and liquid, address the liquid according to the model’s instructions and check that same model’s advice about operating temperatures.
Manufacturer guidance and scope
The recommendations above reflect official manufacturer material accessed October 13, 2026: Apple’s iPhone support guidance is for Ireland, Samsung’s general support page is US-based, and Google’s safety guide covers Pixel 10 models. Regional warranty terms and exact device behavior may differ. The Apple and Samsung depth-and-duration figures are technical test details for the model groups and conditions their sources describe, not population statistics or beach-use promises. For the authoritative instructions for your phone, check the support material for its exact model and region.
Recommended Free Tools
The practical takeaway is consistent across the guidance: limit exposure, avoid saltwater, handle grit gently, use a soft lint-free cloth for appropriate wiping, and let a wet phone air-dry without heat. If your phone’s maker gives a model-specific instruction that differs from a general habit or another brand’s guidance, follow the maker’s direction for your device.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take my water-resistant phone in the ocean?
It is safer to keep it away from the ocean. An IP rating describes controlled, model-specific test conditions, not a promise that a phone can be used in seawater or surf. Samsung says its IP testing uses fresh water in laboratory conditions and warns that saltwater can deteriorate seals and reduce water resistance.
What should I do if saltwater gets on my phone?
Follow the instructions for your exact model. Samsung advises washing a Galaxy exposed to saltwater with fresh water and drying it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. Apple says to rinse an affected area with tap water when a liquid other than water splashes on an iPhone, then wipe it with a soft lint-free cloth. Do not connect a cable until the phone and port are dry.
Can sunscreen damage a phone?
Apple lists sunscreen among liquids to minimize exposing an iPhone to, and Samsung includes it among unclean liquids. Avoid handling the phone with sunscreen-coated hands. If sunscreen contacts it, use the maker’s cleaning instructions rather than household cleaners or improvised methods.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I get sand off my phone?
Move away from the sand and gently wipe the exterior with a soft lint-free cloth. Apple advises ensuring the phone is free of dust before opening the SIM tray and warns against cleaning products or compressed air for dust. Do not rub visible grains across the screen or insert an object into the charging connector.
How long should I wait before charging a wet phone?
Follow the phone maker’s guidance. Apple says to wait at least five hours before cable charging after liquid exposure; that is Apple-specific advice, not a universal drying time or guarantee for other phones. Samsung advises thorough drying and air-drying. In all cases, do not charge by cable until the phone and port are dry.
Can I use a hair dryer to dry a wet phone?
No. Apple and Google warn against using an external heat source to dry a wet phone. Leave it in a dry place with airflow and follow the instructions for your exact model.
Does a waterproof phone pouch make ocean use safe?
Not automatically. Check that the pouch fits your phone, closes securely, is undamaged, and has product-specific protection claims that match the intended use. A pouch is an optional barrier, not a guarantee or a substitute for keeping the phone away from water.

The Bottom Line
Keep your phone shaded, stowed, and away from sand, sunscreen, surf, and saltwater. Check the exact model’s instructions instead of treating an IP rating as an ocean-use promise. If exposure happens, clean and dry the phone as its manufacturer directs, avoid external heat, and wait until the phone and port are dry before connecting a cable.
