Protect your data by selecting a bank that clearly describes its AI processing, switching off optional personalisation and permissions, and using the strongest two-factor authentication the app supports. Read the privacy notice for retention, profiling, processors and international transfers; ask whether transaction data is used for model training; and review devices, alerts and open-banking connections regularly.
AI fraud detection can improve security, but behavioural profiling, location signals and transaction analysis also create privacy risks. The steps below show what to check before opening an account, how to configure an app, and what to ask the bank when its explanations are unclear.
Why an AI banking app needs a different privacy check
A conventional banking app mainly displays balances and lets you initiate payments. An AI-enabled app may also categorise transactions, predict cash flow, offer personalised coaching, score fraud risk, analyse how you hold or tap the phone, and use those observations to change what you see. Each feature can create additional personal-data records, even when you never type a new detail.
Transaction histories reveal income, medical spending, political donations, religious contributions, travel and relationships. Device, IP-address and location signals can indicate where and how you bank. Behavioural biometrics—such as typing rhythm, touch pressure or swipe patterns—can help detect account takeover, yet they can also profile an identifiable person. The privacy question is therefore not simply whether the app “uses AI”; it is which data is collected, for what purpose, for how long, who receives it and whether optional processing can be refused.

Know the European rules that set the baseline
GDPR data protection by default
European data-protection principles require privacy to be built into the default configuration. The European Commission describes the expectation this way: “By default, companies/organisations should ensure that personal data is processed with the highest privacy protection.” In practical terms, a provider should process only data necessary for the stated purpose, retain it for the shortest period that purpose requires and restrict access to people who need it.
That principle does not mean every AI feature is prohibited or that all data must stay on your phone. It means the bank should be able to explain necessity and proportionality. A budgeting tool may need transaction descriptions and amounts; it may not need your entire address book or continuous location. A fraud-control system may need a device identifier and an unusual-login signal; it should explain why a more intrusive behavioural profile is required.
PSD2 strong customer authentication
Under the revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2), strong customer authentication (SCA) applies when a payer accesses an account online, initiates an electronic payment or performs a remote action that may imply a fraud risk. SCA uses at least two independent elements from separate categories:
Recommended Free Tools
- Knowledge: something only you know, such as a passphrase or PIN.
- Possession: something only you possess, such as a registered phone, authenticator device or supported hardware key.
- Inherence: something you are, such as a fingerprint or face characteristic.
The European Banking Authority defines it as “an authentication based on the use of two or more elements categorised as knowledge (something only the user knows), possession (something only the user possesses) and inherence (something that is the user).” The elements must be independent, so compromising one should not automatically compromise the other.
Machine-learning signals from a device, IP address or location can add fraud detection, but EBA guidance treats those signals as additional controls, not substitutes for the required SCA elements. EBA Q&A 2020_5620 also records concerns that capturing behavioural data can profile individuals with sensitive information, conflict with GDPR obligations and create abuse or compromise risks. Ask the bank exactly where behavioural analysis sits in its security design.

Compare a bank’s privacy design before you open an account
Read the current privacy notice and the in-app permission screens before accepting terms. Record the answers rather than relying on a general “AI-powered” promise.
| What to compare | Questions to ask | What a reassuring answer looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Data minimisation and retention | Which fields feed each AI feature? How long are raw transactions, derived scores and device signals kept? | Separate purposes, specific retention periods and deletion or anonymisation when the period ends. |
| AI purpose and model use | Is AI used for fraud prevention, categorisation, credit decisions, marketing or all of these? Are external model providers involved? | Plain-language explanations, named purposes, documented human review and no vague “service improvement” catch-all. |
| Profiling controls | Can optional coaching, personalised offers, behavioural analytics or contact syncing be disabled without closing the account? | Individual toggles, no dark-pattern defaults and a clear effect on the service when a toggle is off. |
| Authentication and recovery | Which SCA methods are available? Can you use an authenticator app or FIDO2/WebAuthn key? How are lost devices replaced? | Two independent factors, transaction signing where appropriate, alerts and a recovery route that does not silently weaken security. |
| Open-banking consent | Which third parties have access, for what duration and to which accounts? Can consent be revoked in the app? | A named recipient, scope and expiry for each consent, with immediate revocation controls. |
| Processors and transfers | Which processors handle analytics, cloud hosting or support? Do data leave the European Economic Area, and what safeguards apply? | Current processor categories, transfer locations and the legal safeguards described in the notice. |
| Incident handling | How will suspicious logins, payment fraud or a data breach be reported? | Real-time or prompt alerts, a staffed fraud channel and clear steps to freeze access and recover the account. |
If a notice does not distinguish fraud prevention from advertising or personalisation, treat that ambiguity as a reason to ask for clarification before enabling optional features.

Set up the app with the least data necessary
- Install only the official application. Obtain it from the bank’s linked app-store listing, verify the publisher name and keep the operating system and app current. Do not use a rooted or jailbroken device for banking.
- Read the privacy notice and consent screens first. Identify the controller, processors, purposes, retention periods, international transfers and the bank’s privacy contact. Save a copy or screenshot of the version you accepted.
- Decline optional permissions. Turn off contact syncing, precise location, microphone, photo access and marketing-data sharing unless a function you genuinely need depends on them. A payment app normally does not need your address book to display your balance.
- Separate essential security from optional personalisation. Keep transaction alerts and fraud controls enabled, but disable personalised offers, automated coaching or behavioural analytics when the app lets you do so. Check whether the setting affects only recommendations or also legitimate fraud checks.
- Create a unique passphrase. Use a long password that has never appeared on another service. Store it in a reputable password manager rather than in notes, email or a browser profile shared with other people.
- Enable the strongest available MFA. Register the bank’s supported authenticator, device-bound approval or hardware security key. Keep a second recovery method that does not rely on the same lost or stolen phone.
- Turn on transaction and login alerts. Choose immediate notifications for new payees, transfers, card-not-present payments, password changes, new devices and open-banking consent.
- Review every connected device. Remove old phones, tablets and browser sessions. Do this after selling, repairing or lending a device.
Decide how to use AI budgeting and personalisation
Budgeting and categorisation
Automatic categorisation generally requires transaction descriptions, merchant names, dates and amounts. Before enabling it, check whether processing occurs inside the bank, through a named processor or by sending data to a general-purpose AI service. Ask whether the bank stores the original description, a category label, an inferred income pattern or all three. If categories are wrong, correct them without granting broader access to your contacts or location.
Coaching and forecasts
Cash-flow forecasts and financial coaching can infer salary dates, recurring bills and financial stress. Look for a switch that disables recommendations while preserving ordinary account access. Confirm whether disabling coaching also stops the bank from using your transactions for marketing or product offers; those are separate purposes and should be presented separately.
Personalised offers
Personalisation is usually optional. Refuse marketing profiling unless you consider the benefit worth the additional analysis. A bank should tell you the categories used to select an offer, the retention period for the profile and whether human staff can view the underlying data. Do not assume that hiding an offer deletes the profile that generated it; request deletion or restriction when appropriate.

Behavioural biometrics
Typing, swiping, device movement and touch characteristics can be collected continuously or during a login. Ask whether the bank uses them only to flag anomalies or also to build a long-term profile. Find out whether a non-behavioural alternative is available and how false positives are reviewed by a person. If the bank cannot explain the data lifecycle, leave the optional feature disabled.
Choose authentication that remains private and recoverable
| Method | Security and privacy considerations | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Password or PIN | A knowledge factor can be phished or reused. It is not sufficient by itself for PSD2 SCA where SCA is required. | Use a unique passphrase and never disclose it to support callers or anyone sending an unsolicited message. |
| SMS code | It can be intercepted through SIM-swap or number-porting fraud and reveals your phone number as a recovery dependency. | Use it only when stronger supported methods are unavailable; add carrier account protection and alerts. |
| Authenticator-app approval | Provides a separate possession factor when the app is registered securely. A compromised phone can still be a single point of failure. | Protect the phone with a device lock, maintain a second recovery method and verify every approval prompt. |
| Biometric unlock | Convenient inherence factor, but biometric templates cannot be changed like passwords. Device-level biometrics are generally preferable to sending raw biometric data to the bank; verify the bank’s design. | Use it only on a device you control, enable a fallback passcode and disable biometric unlock before handing the device to someone else. |
| FIDO2/WebAuthn security key | Can provide the PSD2 possession factor with phishing-resistant cryptographic proof. Compatibility and recovery are provider-specific. | Confirm that your bank supports FIDO2/WebAuthn or a compatible hardware-key flow, register a spare key if allowed and test account recovery before depending on it. |
A FIDO2 key is not automatically accepted by every European bank. Ask the bank which login, payment-approval and recovery flows support it. Never buy a key on the assumption that a particular bank will accept it, because compatibility, enrolment and replacement rules differ by provider.
Approve only actions you initiated
Read the amount, payee and purpose shown in every approval prompt. Criminals may trigger a genuine-looking SCA request and persuade you to approve it. Reject unexpected prompts, change your password through the official app and contact the bank using a number from your card or statement—not a link in the message that prompted the approval.
Reduce exposure from the phone and network
- Use a strong device passcode, automatic screen lock and encrypted storage. Do not share the unlock code with a caller claiming to be bank support.
- Keep the operating system, browser and banking app patched. Security updates often address weaknesses that could expose session tokens or notifications.
- Disable notification previews on the lock screen so balances and one-time codes are not visible to anyone holding the phone.
- Avoid banking on public or unknown Wi-Fi. Mobile data or a trusted network reduces the chance of local interception, although it does not replace app and account security.
- Do not install sideloaded banking packages, remote-control tools or “security” apps requested by an unsolicited caller.
- When a phone is lost, use the bank’s official web or telephone channel to revoke its sessions and SIM-related recovery, then contact your mobile carrier.
Control open-banking and third-party access
Account-information and payment-initiation services can access your data under an explicit consent. In the banking app, list every active connection, the provider’s legal name, the accounts in scope, the permissions granted and the expiry date. Revoke connections you no longer recognise or use. A revoked consent should disappear from the active list; if it does not, ask the bank and the third party to confirm closure.
Do not confuse a third party’s own privacy policy with the bank’s. The third party may become an independent controller for the data it receives. Check its retention, processors, transfers and deletion route before connecting it. Avoid granting access to all accounts when the service needs only one account.

Ask whether transactions train AI models
A bank may use transaction data for fraud scoring, service personalisation, statistical analysis or model training. Those purposes are not interchangeable. Send the bank a written question through its authenticated message centre or published privacy contact:
- Are my transaction descriptions, amounts, merchant data, device signals or behavioural data used to train or fine-tune any model?
- Is the model operated by the bank or by a named processor, and are data transferred outside the European Economic Area?
- What legal basis applies to each purpose, and which uses are necessary to provide the account?
- How long are raw records, derived features, model-training datasets and fraud scores retained?
- Are decisions reviewed by a human, and how can I challenge an inaccurate profile or fraud decision?
- Can I object to or opt out of optional training, profiling or marketing while keeping core banking services?
Keep the bank’s reply and the date of the privacy notice. A statement that data are “anonymised” should explain the method and whether the bank retains a key or other information that could reconnect records to you. If the answer covers only fraud detection, ask separately about coaching, categorisation, advertising and general product improvement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use your GDPR rights deliberately
Applicable GDPR rights can include access, correction, erasure, restriction of processing, objection and data portability, subject to legal obligations such as financial-record retention and fraud prevention. The bank’s privacy contact or data-protection officer should explain the route for each request.
- State the specific data and purpose involved—for example, a behavioural profile used for personalised offers—rather than asking vaguely to “delete everything.”
- Request the legal basis, recipients or recipient categories, retention period and information about any automated decision that materially affects you.
- Ask for restriction while an inaccurate profile or objection is investigated, if that is relevant to your situation.
- Verify your identity through the bank’s secure process, but do not send a password, one-time code or full card credentials by email.
- Save the request, acknowledgement and final response. If the response is incomplete, use the bank’s complaint route and then contact the data-protection authority in your country.
Some records cannot be erased immediately because banking and anti-fraud laws require retention. The bank should identify that obligation instead of giving a blanket refusal.

Best Value
- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
Your phone or SIM is lost
Use another trusted channel to revoke sessions and disable mobile approval. Ask the carrier to suspend or replace the SIM, then re-enrol a possession factor only after the bank confirms the old one is invalid. Check email, phone number, payee and open-banking changes for tampering.
You discover an unfamiliar third-party connection
Revoke the consent in the bank app, contact the third party to request deletion or restriction and review every account that was in scope. Change credentials if the connection used them directly rather than an authorisation flow.
The bank reports a data breach
Follow the bank’s official instructions, change any reused password immediately and watch for targeted phishing that references real transactions. Ask what categories of data were exposed, when the incident occurred, which protections were applied and whether you need to replace a card, device credential or recovery factor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA monthly privacy and security review
- Check new devices, active sessions, payees, direct debits and open-banking consents.
- Read recent login, payment and profile-change alerts; investigate anything you do not recognise.
- Revisit AI settings after app updates, because new features can introduce new permissions or defaults.
- Confirm that optional location, contact syncing, marketing and personalisation remain off if you do not need them.
- Install operating-system and app updates, and remove the banking app from obsolete devices.
- Review the privacy notice’s revision date and ask for clarification when purposes, processors or retention periods change.
- Test that your recovery method works without weakening SCA, while keeping backup codes or a spare supported key in a secure place.
A practical decision rule
Prefer a bank whose privacy notice answers the AI questions in plain language, whose app provides separate controls for essential security and optional profiling, and whose authentication offers two independent factors with a documented recovery process. If the provider cannot state what transaction data trains models, how long behavioural signals remain or who receives the data, treat that uncertainty as a material risk and seek a written answer before enabling the feature.
