Do not pay anyone who guarantees streams, followers, or playlist placement. Those offers can create artificial listening, violate platform rules, remove legitimate royalties and metrics, and put your artist account or distributor relationship at risk—even when you did not knowingly order bots.
Protect yourself by securing Spotify for Artists with two-step verification, keeping release-approval credentials private, limiting team access, checking for unexplained catalog or audience changes, and documenting and reporting anything suspicious to your distributor, label, and the platform. A stream spike alone does not prove that you bought artificial streams or that your login was stolen.
What stream-farming scams are—and why they threaten your account
Stream farming is the manipulation of listening activity to inflate plays, followers, charts, or recommendations. A seller may approach you through social media or email and promise guaranteed streams, guaranteed playlist placement, algorithmic exposure, or a fixed number of plays for a fee. The service may use bots, fake accounts, automated scripts, repeat-play tactics, or coordinated behavior rather than genuine fans choosing to listen.
Spotify defines an artificial stream as “a stream that doesn’t reflect genuine user listening intent, including any instance of attempting to manipulate Spotify by using automated processes (e.g. bots or scripts).” The platform also warns against asking fans to loop tracks inauthentically or coordinate behavior intended to manipulate counts or evade detection.

Apple Music for Artists gives a similarly direct warning: “Any company or person that claims they can get you more plays on Apple Music for a fee is not authorized to do so by Apple.” A paid service can therefore be risky even if it calls itself marketing, playlist consideration, audience development, or promotion rather than a bot operation.
Keep three possibilities separate while you investigate:
- A promotion you commissioned: You or a team member hired a service, and its methods may have generated prohibited activity.
- Artificial activity you did not authorize: A third party may have targeted your release, copied your artist identity, or sent automated traffic without your consent.
- An account or catalog problem: Someone may have accessed your account, or a distributor may have delivered music to the wrong artist profile.
These situations can overlap, but an unusual graph or playlist is an investigation trigger, not proof of intent.

Recognize the offer before you accept it
Use the following screen for any unsolicited promotion proposal. A legitimate marketer can describe what it will actually do without promising a platform outcome that it cannot control.

Before hiring promotion, set boundaries that protect the account
- Write down the intended activity. Record the release, territory, dates, audience, channels, budget, and the result the service is allowed to pursue. “More plays” is not a safe method specification.
- Require a method description. The service should be able to say whether it is buying ordinary advertising, arranging press, pitching independent curators, or using another human-led channel. Refusal to explain the method is a reason to decline.
- Ban artificial tactics in the agreement. State that bots, scripts, fake accounts, forced loops, stream quotas, and tactics designed to evade detection are not permitted.
- Keep platform access with your team. A promoter should not receive your Spotify for Artists password, two-step-verification code, backup code, Apple Music for Artists credentials, or Spotify artist key.
- Keep an evidence file. Save the proposal, contract, invoices, payment confirmation, campaign reports, and the dates and names of everyone who approved the work. These records help a distributor or label distinguish a genuine campaign from an unauthorized one.
Secure Spotify for Artists
Turn on two-step verification
Spotify’s documented two-step-verification methods are an authenticator app or SMS. The feature is currently available to Spotify for Artists users. In your Spotify account settings, enable two-step verification and complete the method you choose. Then store the backup codes in a secure place separate from ordinary campaign files.
- Each backup code is single-use.
- Never send a backup code to a promoter, manager, “support” contact, or anyone who approaches you unexpectedly.
- If another person may have seen a code, generate a new set rather than continuing to use the exposed set.
- Do not assume that a security key or another hardware method is supported for Spotify for Artists; Spotify’s cited instructions document an authenticator app and SMS.
Use a distinct, strong account password and review who can access the artist account. Remove people who no longer work with the project and avoid shared logins. A team member who needs access should use the platform’s administrator or invitation workflow rather than receiving your personal credentials.

Protect the Spotify artist key
Some artists have access to Spotify’s Artist Profile Protection feature. When available, Block releases requires approval before a release lists the protected artist. The associated artist key can let a trusted distributor pre-approve legitimate releases.

Treat that key like a release credential:
- Share it only with a distributor you trust and only through the distributor’s approved process.
- Never publish it, put it in a public document, or send it to a playlist promoter.
- Review unfamiliar pending releases and confirm the content provider with your distributor before approving anything.
- If the key may be exposed, contact Spotify support to refresh it.
Artist Profile Protection is not universal. Availability depends on Spotify’s rollout and the provider’s compatibility; releases from some providers may not be eligible for approval or removal. Do not treat the feature as a substitute for reviewing your catalog.
Control access across your artist team

Maintain a current list of administrators, managers, label staff, and contractors who can see or change artist information. Give each person only the access needed for their role, remove former collaborators promptly, and review unexpected access requests through the official Spotify workflow.

Apple Music for Artists access
Apple Music for Artists says that only an artist or artist manager can claim an artist page. Claimants must verify their identity or relationship to the artist, and artist or artist-manager administrators are responsible for reviewing additional access requests. Treat a request that bypasses that identity and administrator process as suspicious. Spotify’s security controls and Apple’s page-claim process are separate; enabling one does not secure the other.
Monitor the signals that deserve investigation
No single metric establishes who caused suspicious activity. Look for a pattern, record when it appeared, and compare it with your actual promotion calendar.

Significant discrepancies may produce a message in Spotify for Artists. Public and private figures may not change at the same time, so do not assume that a temporary dashboard number is a final royalty or chart outcome.

What to do when suspicious streams appear
- Stop questionable promotion. Pause any service connected with the spike. Do not ask fans to create extra plays to “balance” the data.
- Build a timeline. Record when you first noticed the activity, the tracks and territories involved, playlist names, dashboard messages, release approvals, team members with access, and any campaign dates.
- Preserve the promotion record. Keep contracts, invoices, emails, direct messages, advertising receipts, reports, and the service’s name. Do not edit screenshots or delete correspondence.
- Contact your distributor or label. Explain what promotion you authorized, what you did not authorize, and why the activity appears inconsistent. Spotify says artists who believe their activity was authentic should describe their genuine promotion methods and provide supporting details so the partner can request review.
- Report suspicious playlists directly to Spotify. Include the playlist, track, dates, and why the placement appears connected to artificial activity. Reporting a playlist does not guarantee a particular decision or timetable.
- Secure access while the review is open. Change credentials if access may have been shared, regenerate exposed backup codes, remove unneeded administrators, and protect the artist key.
- Wait for the platform and partner process. Do not promise yourself or collaborators that a warning will be reversed. Keep responding factually and consistently if Spotify, Apple, your distributor, or your label asks for information.
Understand the possible consequences
Spotify states that confirmed artificial streams do not earn royalties, count toward public stream numbers or charts, or positively influence recommendation algorithms. Depending on severity, Spotify may withhold associated royalties, adjust public metrics, remove a song from playlists, or remove manipulated content.
Spotify also reports confirmed activity to labels and distributors. Those partners may issue a warning, charge a penalty fee, remove content, or suspend an account in flagrant or repeated cases. Spotify’s per-track charge for flagrant artificial streaming at very high rates applies to labels and distributors; it is not a fee that Spotify directly charges every artist for every suspicious play.
Separate a bot problem from an account takeover or catalog mix-up

Recover access if you are locked out
- Start with Spotify’s official account-recovery instructions and secure the email account associated with the artist account.
- If another Spotify for Artists team administrator still has access, ask that administrator to invite your new account through the normal team workflow.
- If you were the only administrator and recovery is impossible, contact Spotify support and provide evidence of your identity and relationship to the artist.
- After recovery, review team members, connected email addresses, two-step verification methods, backup codes, pending releases, and artist-profile changes.
Do not pay a person who claims to be able to “restore” the account in exchange for your password or a backup code. A genuine support process should not require you to surrender one-time security credentials to an intermediary.

- Confirm that the service does not use bots, scripts, fake accounts, forced loops, or quotas.
- Keep credentials and release keys out of the campaign handoff.
- Record the campaign dates and territories so later audience changes have context.
Check regularly
- Review playlists, release approvals, artist-page content, audience geography, and engagement for unexplained changes.
- Investigate patterns instead of treating one spike as proof of wrongdoing.
