To protect medical records in an AI health app, share only the details needed for your question, check the app’s current privacy notice and settings before uploading anything, and secure the account and device you use. Do not assume HIPAA protects information just because it came from a doctor’s record or because an app describes itself as an AI health service. In the United States, the app’s operator and its relationship to a covered health organization matter more than its AI label.
Start with the key privacy question: who operates the app?
An AI feature does not, by itself, determine which privacy rules apply. The important questions are who provides the app, whether it acts for a HIPAA-covered organization, what information it collects, where that information goes, how long it is retained, and what control you have over it.
For a consumer using an independently offered app, do not assume that HIPAA covers information entered voluntarily—even if you copied it from a medical record. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) says HIPAA does not protect health information a person voluntarily downloads or enters into an app that is not developed or offered by, or on behalf of, a HIPAA-regulated entity. The origin of the information does not change that conclusion. HHS explains the distinction in its guidance on online tracking technologies and HIPAA.

An app offered through a health plan or provider may have a different role from an app you choose and use independently. That relationship still needs to be checked; the app’s name, medical tone, or AI capabilities do not establish it.

Other protections may apply even when HIPAA does not. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says the FTC Act applies to most app developers and prohibits unfair or deceptive practices, including misleading privacy representations. The FTC also warns companies against unsupported claims such as “HIPAA compliant,” “HIPAA secure,” or “HIPAA certified.” Treat a badge or marketing phrase as a claim to verify, not proof that your information is protected. The FTC’s overview of the relevant federal distinctions is in its guidance on HIPAA, the FTC Act, and the Health Breach Notification Rule.
This article covers U.S. federal guidance, not every state law or rules in other countries. State law may also apply, as the FTC notes in its mobile health app best practices.
What to check in an AI health app before uploading records
Use the app’s current privacy notice, in-product privacy controls, and account settings. Read the terms that apply to the specific feature you plan to use: policies and controls can vary by provider, product, paid tier, settings, and date. If the app does not answer a question clearly, ask the provider through an official support channel or avoid uploading sensitive records until you understand the trade-off.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- What does it collect? Look for information gathered from prompts, uploaded images or PDFs, conversation history, connected health accounts, device permissions, and account details. Check whether the policy distinguishes information you submit from information collected automatically.
- What happens to prompts and files? Find out whether the app stores prompt text, uploaded records, images, and conversation history, and whether they are used to improve or train models. Check whether any separate setting controls model-improvement use and whether turning it off applies to the specific feature you are using.
- Who may receive or review the information? Look for disclosures about human reviewers, outside service providers, analytics, advertising, and connected services. Determine whether submitted content may be accessed beyond the app operator and for what purposes.
- How long is it kept? Check the retention period for content and account data, what happens when you delete a conversation or close an account, and whether backups persist after a deletion request. A delete button does not, by itself, explain how long every copy remains.
- What controls can you use? Find the settings for deleting or exporting data, disconnecting health integrations, opting out of optional uses, and limiting analytics or advertising where those controls are offered.
- What is the provider’s health-care role? Check whether the app is offered by a provider or health plan, or independently, and what role the vendor plays. If the app is connected to your care, ask the provider which service receives the data and under what arrangement.
These are questions to investigate, not findings about any particular AI product. Without reviewing an app’s current primary terms and settings, you cannot conclude that it does—or does not—retain submitted records, use them for model improvement, sell information, or share it with a particular party.
How to share the minimum information needed
Start with a general question that does not require a record upload. If more context is needed, add only the details that could change the answer. For instance, you may be able to summarize a relevant result or paste a short excerpt rather than upload an entire visit summary, insurance statement, or medical history.

- Try the question without a file. Ask whether the feature can help with a general explanation, such as describing a medical term. Do not include identifiers simply to make the prompt feel complete.
- Add only relevant context. Include the specific result, symptom description, or excerpt needed for the question. Leave out unrelated pages, older records, and information about other people.
- Remove unnecessary identifiers where feasible. Before sharing a document, consider removing names, contact details, account numbers, and exact dates if the feature can answer without them. Check for identifiers in headers, footers, filenames, image backgrounds, and other pages in the same file.
- Check the final prompt or attachment. Confirm that it contains only the content you intend to submit and that you are using the correct account and app feature.
Removing a name is not a guarantee of anonymity. The FTC notes that health information may identify someone, or convey health facts about them, when combined with other details. Dates, locations, rare conditions, and contextual information can matter. Redaction can reduce what you disclose, but it does not establish that a file is anonymous or that the app cannot associate it with your account.
Do not upload a complete record just because an app accepts PDFs or images. A shorter excerpt or a manually written summary may be enough. Avoid including another person’s medical information unless you have the authority to share it and it is genuinely needed.
Secure your account, device, and viewing environment
Some privacy protections are within your control; others depend on the app operator. The FTC’s recommendations on data minimization, limited permissions, authentication, and protecting data in transit and at rest are aimed primarily at app developers. As a consumer, you can ask whether the app takes those measures and use the account and device protections available to you. They reduce certain risks but cannot guarantee that an app or its vendors will not have a data incident.
- Use a unique password. Do not reuse a password from email, banking, or another important account. If the app offers multifactor authentication, enable it.
- Review permissions. Allow access only when a feature needs it. If the app does not need ongoing access to contacts, location, microphone, camera, or health data for the function you use, review whether that permission can be denied or revoked in the device or app settings.
- Keep the app and device current. Install available software updates, and use a screen lock. Updates can address software issues, though they do not change what the provider’s privacy practices allow.
- Check connected accounts and sessions. Review linked health services and logged-in devices if those controls are available. Remove connections or sessions you no longer recognize or need.
- Think about who can see the screen. Avoid opening sensitive records where people nearby can read them. A laptop privacy screen filter may help reduce shoulder-surfing in a shared space, but it is only a physical viewing aid. It cannot prevent an app or vendor from collecting, retaining, using, or disclosing information.
Can an AI health app use my medical records to train its model?
It depends on the particular app’s current terms, settings, and the feature you use. The fact that a service calls itself an AI health app does not answer whether it stores prompts or files, uses them to improve or train models, permits human review, or shares them with service providers. No app-specific policy has been assessed here, so it would be misleading to give a yes-or-no answer about a particular provider.
Look for language in the privacy notice or settings about model training, product improvement, human review, and uploaded content. Check whether an opt-out exists, whether it applies to prompts as well as files, and whether it affects content already submitted. If the policy is unclear, ask the provider what happens to the information you plan to submit. Until you have an answer you are comfortable with, use a less identifying summary or do not upload the record.

How to compare privacy practices without relying on a badge
If you are choosing between services, compare what their current policies say rather than assuming that a medical focus, a paid tier, or a HIPAA-related phrase settles the issue. Use the same questions for each app so the comparison is useful: what data is collected, whether prompts or files can be used to improve models, who can access content, how long it is retained, what deletion and export controls exist, and whether the app has a relationship to a health plan or provider.
Also compare the practical controls you would actually use. Can you disable an optional integration? Can you clear a conversation or request deletion? Does the app explain whether backups or other copies persist? Are permissions limited to a feature, or does the app ask for broader access? A policy may discuss these topics in different places, so review both the privacy notice and in-product settings. Save the date you checked and the relevant policy or setting details; terms can change, and your records may be important if you later need to ask the provider about a disclosure.
Do not treat two apps as equivalent just because both offer AI summaries or symptom explanations. Their data practices, legal roles, retention, and controls may differ. A comparison is only as current and specific as the provider materials you review. If an important point—such as model improvement or human review—is unclear, treat it as unresolved and avoid sharing information that is not necessary.
What to do if you think your information was exposed
First determine what may have been exposed and which account or service was involved. Keep the response proportional to the information at risk; health insurance details, Social Security numbers, and ordinary conversation text can call for different follow-up.
- Secure the app account. Change its password to a unique one, enable multifactor authentication if available, and revoke other sessions if the app offers that option. Review connected-account access.
- Check settings and updates. Review privacy controls, remove integrations you do not need, and install current app updates.
- Contact the provider through an official channel. Ask what information was involved, when it was exposed, what steps were taken, and whether your account or submitted content is affected. Preserve notices, dates, and screenshots relevant to the incident.
- Follow up based on the data involved. If health insurance information was exposed, contact the insurer or provider and review Explanation of Benefits statements and medical records for activity you do not recognize. If Social Security or financial information was involved, use appropriate official identity-theft and financial-account resources.
- Report suspected misuse when appropriate. You can report concerns to the FTC or the relevant regulator. Reporting is distinct from the company’s legal notification duties, and it does not guarantee a particular recovery outcome.
The FTC’s Health Breach Notification Rule covers certain vendors of personal health records, PHR-related entities, and third-party service providers that are not covered by HIPAA. Whether it applies depends on the entity and the facts. A breach can include an unauthorized disclosure by a company, not only a hacker breaking into a system. The FTC explains the rule’s coverage and business notification obligations in its compliance guidance. Those business duties are not the same as an individual consumer’s reporting process.

Under the rule, covered businesses generally have duties to notify affected consumers and the FTC, and sometimes the media, after specified breaches. That is a company’s obligation, not a guarantee that every incident involving an app will qualify or that a consumer can expect a particular remedy. The FTC’s 2024 announcement of updates to the rule said the changes were intended to keep pace with health apps and connected devices. If you receive a notice, read which information was involved, what date range it covers, and what steps the company says to take; contact the company through a verified channel if anything is unclear.

Protecting a record does not make an AI-generated health answer accurate. Treat output as potentially fallible, especially when it could affect a diagnosis, medication, treatment, or decision to seek care. Discuss consequential decisions with a qualified clinician, and use the app for explanations or organization only to the extent you are comfortable with its privacy practices and limitations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does HIPAA protect my data in an AI app?
Not automatically. HHS says HIPAA does not protect health information you voluntarily enter into or download to an app that is not developed or offered by or on behalf of a HIPAA-regulated entity, even if the information came from a medical record. Check who operates the app and whether it acts for a health plan or provider. Other laws, including the FTC Act and in some cases the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule, may apply.
Can an AI health app use my medical records to train its model?
That depends on the app’s current terms, settings, and the feature you use. Check whether prompts, files, and conversation history may be used for model improvement, whether human reviewers or service providers may access them, and whether an opt-out applies to the content you plan to submit. Do not assume the answer from the AI label alone.

Does a “HIPAA compliant” label prove an app is safe?
No. The FTC warns companies against unsupported claims such as “HIPAA compliant,” “HIPAA secure,” or “HIPAA certified.” A phrase or badge is not proof of how the service handles your data. Review the current privacy notice, controls, retention and deletion practices, and the app’s relationship to any covered provider or plan.

Should I upload my full medical record if the app accepts it?
Usually, start with a general question and share only the information needed to answer it. A short excerpt or manually written summary may work instead of a complete file. Remove unnecessary identifiers and unrelated pages where feasible, while remembering that removing a name alone does not guarantee anonymity.
Will a privacy screen filter protect records I upload?
A laptop privacy screen filter may make it harder for nearby people to read your display, which can help with shoulder-surfing. It does not control how an app or its vendors collect, retain, use, or disclose uploaded data.
What should I do if an AI health app may have exposed my information?
Secure the account by changing its password, enabling multifactor authentication if available, and revoking other sessions where possible. Review settings and connected accounts, contact the provider through an official channel, and save notices and dates. If insurance details were involved, contact the insurer or provider and check Explanation of Benefits statements and medical records for unfamiliar activity. Use appropriate official identity-theft or financial-account resources for exposed Social Security or financial information.

Before using an AI health app with a medical record, verify who operates it, read the current policy and settings for storage, model improvement, access, retention, and deletion, and share only the minimum information needed. HIPAA does not automatically follow a record into an independent app, and a privacy badge does not prove how data is handled. Secure your account and device, but remember that those steps cannot control the provider’s practices or guarantee against a data incident.
