If someone has shared an AI-generated intimate image of you without consent, report it to the platform immediately: under the federal TAKE IT DOWN Act, a covered platform must remove a covered image and known identical copies within 48 hours after receiving a valid request. That rule does not apply to every deepfake, voice clone, scam, or unauthorized use of your identity. For those cases, preserve evidence, report the content, and consider legal advice based on the state and the way your likeness was used.
This guide focuses on U.S. law and reporting options. Protection outside the United States—and many remedies under state law—depends on where you are and the facts of the incident.
First, identify what kind of likeness misuse occurred
The right response depends on whether the content is an intimate image, another kind of impersonation, or a commercial use of your face or voice. The federal removal process is specific; it is not a general takedown mechanism for all AI-generated content.

How to get a nonconsensual intimate image taken down
The FTC’s guidance says the TAKE IT DOWN Act covers real, digitally altered, and AI-generated intimate images. The Act was enacted as Public Law 119-12 on May 19, 2025; the FTC began enforcing the platform requirements on May 19, 2026. For a valid request, a covered platform must remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours.

1. Preserve details and report the post
- Use the post’s report control or the platform’s help or support process to request removal. The FTC says covered platforms must provide a request process.
- Where it is safe and lawful to do so, record the post URL, account or profile name, date and time, and the platform’s request number or correspondence. Save relevant screenshots or other evidence securely.
- If the platform requires you to create an account just to make a removal request, the FTC advises reporting the platform. Do not create or keep an account if doing so would put you at risk.
2. Track the response and escalate a missed deadline
Note when you submitted the request and keep the platform’s response. If a covered platform does not remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours after a valid request, report the platform to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The FTC’s September 2026 consumer guidance describes this deadline; it does not make the same promise for unrelated likeness misuse or sites outside the law’s coverage.
3. Limit resharing where a participating service can help
StopNCII is a free global tool operated by the Revenge Porn Helpline. It creates a digital fingerprint from an image and shares the fingerprint—not the image—with participating platforms, which can look for matches and may block them. It is not a guarantee of removal across the internet, and it works only with participating platforms.

4. Use child-safety reporting channels for a minor
If the person depicted is under 18, FTC guidance points minors and caregivers to National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) reporting resources and recommends reporting perpetrators to local law enforcement or the FBI. Do not download, forward, or circulate apparent child sexual abuse material. Use the appropriate reporting channels instead.

5. Treat threats or extortion as an immediate safety issue
If someone is threatening you or demanding money or other action, prioritize your immediate safety and contact local authorities or the FBI as appropriate. Keep relevant communications and account information if it is safe to do so, and consult current FTC guidance. Paying or complying with a demand is not a substitute for reporting.

What to do about a fake endorsement, voice clone, or other impersonation
For an AI voice or face used to solicit money, promote a product, or impersonate someone, preserve the original post and its URL, then report it to the hosting service. If a business or payment provider is involved, alert its official contact channel. Do not rely on the TAKE IT DOWN Act’s 48-hour process unless the content and circumstances meet that law’s intimate-image requirements.
The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2024 Copyright and Artificial Intelligence, Part 1: Digital Replicas Report describes right of publicity as a potentially apt state-law remedy for unauthorized digital replicas, while emphasizing that state rules differ considerably. Depending on the facts, a lawyer may also assess privacy, false endorsement, fraud, or other claims. A claim’s availability and the best next step cannot be determined from the content alone; state, context, and intended outcome matter.

Reduce the risk of future misuse
No cited official source establishes a product or technical setting that can guarantee your face or voice will not be copied or used in AI content. These practical steps can reduce exposure or make misuse harder to exploit, but they are not guarantees.
- Review public profiles and audience settings; remove personal photos, recordings, or other material that does not need to be public.
- Use strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication for social and creator accounts, and review app permissions periodically.
- Before giving a company or collaborator images, voice recordings, scans, or performance captures, ask what they may capture, generate, retain, train on, sublicense, or reuse.
- For commercial work, put the permitted uses, media, territory, duration, payment, storage, and deletion or revocation terms in writing. Have an entertainment or privacy lawyer review significant agreements.
- A visible watermark may help identify or discourage casual reuse, but it can be cropped or altered and does not create a legal shield. Do not assume that metadata controls downstream AI use.
When monitoring support or legal advice may be worthwhile
If you are a creator, public figure, or professional facing repeated impersonation, likeness-monitoring and takedown-request support may be an option to investigate. A 2024 USPTO hearing transcript includes testimony about a partnership that flagged unauthorized likeness content and sent removal requests; the same hearing record discusses the burden of enforcing rights against anonymous, fast-spreading content. That testimony does not establish that any particular service is currently available, effective, or suitable for you.

Seek advice from a lawyer licensed in the relevant jurisdiction when you need to assess a state-law claim, respond to commercial use, pursue compensation, address repeated abuse, or decide how to handle an agreement involving your likeness. The Copyright Office’s report is useful background, not a substitute for checking current law where you live.
