You can reduce wildfire smoke indoors without leaving your central HVAC blower on continuously. Close windows and exterior doors, create one cleaner-air room, and run a portable mechanical air cleaner there at a smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. Use a compatible MERV 13 or higher central filter when the system is actually heating or cooling, but rely on the portable cleaner for filtration while the central fan is off.
This approach follows U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance. It limits the amount of smoke entering, removes particles in the room where people spend time, and avoids generating additional indoor particles.
What to do first when wildfire smoke arrives
Smoke conditions can change over a few hours. Check EPA wildfire air-filtration guidance and local public-health alerts or AirNow readings before deciding how tightly to close the home. Then work through this sequence.

- Choose a room where people can stay comfortably. A bedroom with an attached bathroom can work well, but the best choice depends on your household’s layout and mobility needs. Keep that room’s windows and door closed as much as practical.
- Place a portable mechanical air cleaner in the room. Select a unit using its smoke CADR, not only a manufacturer’s claimed room-size label. Keep its intake and outlet clear.
- Run it continuously at the highest fan speed people can tolerate. EPA advises continuous operation and says to check or replace filters when they become dirty or smell loaded with smoke.
- Stop adding particles indoors. Do not smoke or vape indoors, burn candles, use aerosol sprays, or perform high-heat or prolonged cooking while smoke levels are high. Avoid vacuuming unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter; damp wiping and mopping capture settled dust without redistributing as much of it.
- Protect against dangerous heat. Use air conditioning and fans to stay cool. If the home becomes dangerously hot, open windows during a less-smoky period or go somewhere with cleaner, cooler air. Smoke control must not take priority over avoiding heat illness.
When outdoor air improves, ventilate the house by opening windows and doors for a suitable period, then close them again if smoke returns. EPA’s cleaner-air-room instructions provide the same basic enclosure and source-control strategy.

Why a portable cleaner is the alternative to fan-only HVAC
A portable cleaner is designed to provide cleaner air in one room. It can supplement filtration from a forced-air system, but it does not clean every room equally. That room-level focus is useful when you do not want the central blower operating just to circulate air.
A central HVAC filter only captures particles when air is moving through the equipment. If the system is off, its filter is not treating room air. A portable cleaner continues filtering while the central fan is off, so place it where household members spend the most time rather than in an empty hallway.
Choose a mechanical filtration design that produces little or no ozone. The EPA does not recommend electronic cleaners marketed around ionization for smoke because effectiveness is unclear and ozone may be produced. EPA also states, “EPA does not certify or recommend specific brands or models of air filters or portable air cleaners.” Evaluate the product category and documented specifications instead of treating a particular brand name as an endorsement.

Size a portable air cleaner by smoke CADR
EPA’s smoke-specific sizing rule is:
minimum smoke CADR (cfm) = room area (square feet) × 2/3
For example, a 300-square-foot room needs a smoke CADR of at least 200 cfm under that rule. This is a sizing calculation, not a promise of a particular reduction in health risk. Measure the actual room area; do not assume the number on a box applies to your ceiling height or an open floor plan.

Examples using the two-thirds rule
| Room area | Minimum smoke CADR | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | About 67 cfm | Choose at least the next higher published CADR if models are listed in whole numbers. |
| 200 sq ft | About 133 cfm | Use the smoke CADR, not a generic “up to” room-size statement. |
| 300 sq ft | 200 cfm | This is the direct example from the EPA sizing rule. |
| 400 sq ft | About 267 cfm | An open-plan area may require more than one unit or a higher-rated unit. |
| 600 sq ft | 400 cfm | Consider whether dividing the space into a smaller closed room is more practical. |
EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home also gives an estimated particle-removal table for an eight-foot ceiling:
| Room area | EPA estimated minimum CADR | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 65 cfm | Estimate for an approximately eight-foot ceiling. |
| 200 sq ft | 130 cfm | Estimate; higher ceilings may require more CADR. |
| 300 sq ft | 195 cfm | Estimate, not a measured health outcome. |
| 400 sq ft | 260 cfm | Estimate for an approximately eight-foot ceiling. |
| 500 sq ft | 325 cfm | Estimate; account for ceiling height and open doors. |
| 600 sq ft | 390 cfm | Estimate; a larger or divided space may need more than one unit. |
The small difference between these table values and the rounded two-thirds calculation reflects EPA’s estimation method. Higher ceilings increase the volume of air, and an open doorway effectively enlarges the area being treated. If one portable unit cannot meet the calculated CADR, use multiple units whose smoke CADRs add up to the target, or close off a smaller room.
How to operate the portable cleaner effectively
Place it for unobstructed airflow
Set the unit in the occupied room with several inches of clearance around every intake and outlet, following the manufacturer’s placement instructions. Do not push it behind a sofa, curtains, or a bed where air cannot circulate. Keep the cleaner in the same room as people rather than relying on airflow through a doorway to clean the rest of the home.
Use the highest acceptable setting
High speed generally moves more air through the filter. Run the unit continuously while the room is occupied; EPA’s wording is, “Run the device whenever the room is occupied.” If noise makes sleep or conversation difficult, use the highest setting the household can tolerate and increase it again during periods of heavier smoke.
Plan for filter maintenance
Inspect the filter more often during a smoke event. Replace or clean it according to the product’s instructions when it is visibly dirty, airflow drops, or it develops a smoke odor. Before buying, check that replacement filters are available and that their recurring cost fits your budget. A cleaner that cannot be maintained will not provide its rated performance for long.

Prefer low-ozone mechanical filtration
Look for a mechanical particle filter and, where applicable, certification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) indicating low ozone emissions. CARB status does not replace checking smoke CADR, noise, filter availability, or fit for your room. Avoid making an ionizer or ozone generator the default smoke-control device.
Using central HVAC without fan-only mode
You can still use central HVAC during a normal heating or cooling call. The goal is to avoid running the blower solely for filtration.
Set the system to recirculate
If your equipment has a fresh-air or outdoor-air control, set it to recirculation or close the outdoor intake during smoky conditions when the system allows that change. EPA discusses this option in its cleaner-air-room guidance. Do not alter a life-safety or ventilation system in a way that conflicts with its instructions; ask the equipment manufacturer or an HVAC professional if the control is unclear.
Install MERV 13 or higher only when compatible
EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher when the equipment can handle it. MERV 13 and higher filters must demonstrate at least 50% removal efficiency for the smallest particles tested in the rating procedure. That is a laboratory rating criterion, not a guarantee that every house will achieve 50% removal.
Confirm the exact filter dimensions and the system’s compatibility before installation. A denser filter can increase airflow resistance, and not every furnace, air handler, or return grille is designed for the same filter thickness or efficiency. If you are uncertain, consult the manufacturer or an HVAC technician rather than forcing a filter into the slot.

Inspect filters during prolonged smoke
Heavy smoke can load a central filter faster than ordinary operation. Check it more frequently and replace it when it is dirty or overloaded. The filter helps only during heating or cooling operation; when that call ends, use the portable cleaner to continue treating the occupied room.
Building a temporary DIY fan-filter cleaner
A box fan with one or more furnace filters can be a contingency option when a commercial portable cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable. EPA cautions that performance varies with design and assembly and does not recommend relying on a DIY unit as a routine, permanent substitute for a commercial cleaner with known performance.
Use safer, higher-efficiency components
- Choose a box fan made in 2012 or later with a UL or ETL safety mark.
- Use a high-efficiency furnace filter, preferably MERV 13 or higher, in the correct size for the fan and filter frame.
- Follow the airflow arrows printed on the filter so air travels through the filter in the intended direction.
- Seal gaps between the filter and fan frame so smoke-laden air cannot bypass the filter.
- Place the assembly on a stable surface where its intake and outlet remain clear, and follow the fan’s safety instructions.
Because homemade designs differ, you cannot assume a DIY assembly has the same CADR, electrical safety testing, noise level, or durability as a commercial cleaner. Treat it as a temporary measure and replace or improve it when a tested, maintainable option becomes available.
Compare the three practical approaches
| Approach | Where it cleans | Checks before use | Main limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable mechanical air cleaner | Primarily one room | Smoke CADR relative to floor area; low-ozone or CARB status; noise; replacement-filter availability and cost; unobstructed placement | Room-level coverage and ongoing filter and electricity costs |
| Central HVAC filter | Air circulated by the forced-air system | MERV 13 or higher only if compatible; exact filter size; recirculation setting; manufacturer or technician advice | Filters only while the HVAC system operates; higher efficiency may not suit every system |
| DIY fan-filter unit | Primarily one room | Box fan made since 2012 with UL or ETL marking; preferably MERV 13 filter; correct airflow direction; sealed frame; safe, stable placement | Variable performance and no standardized product-level CADR for every assembly; not recommended as a permanent replacement for a commercial cleaner |
Reduce smoke that enters and particles you create
Filtration works better when there is less new smoke to remove. Keep windows and doors closed during the smoky period, but preserve a clear emergency exit. Avoid indoor smoking and vaping, candles, incense, aerosol products, and activities that generate fine particles. Delay frying, broiling, grilling, and other high-heat or lengthy cooking when possible. If cooking is necessary, use the exhaust system only if it vents outdoors and does not draw smoky outdoor air into the home; follow the appliance instructions.
Vacuuming can stir settled particles back into the air. Unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter, postpone it until conditions improve. Damp-wipe surfaces and mop floors instead. These measures do not replace filtration; they reduce the load placed on the cleaner and the amount of smoke that can resuspend.

What to do if the room becomes too hot
Closing a home tightly can trap heat. Run air conditioning if available, and use fans to distribute already filtered indoor air while keeping smoky outdoor air out. Watch for signs that the indoor temperature is becoming unsafe, especially for older adults, children, and people with medical conditions. If you cannot stay cool, open windows during a period when outdoor smoke is lower or move to a cleaner, cooler location. EPA addresses this trade-off in its frequently asked questions about wildland-fire smoke.
Do not use a portable cleaner, central filter, or DIY fan-filter unit as evidence that every pollutant has been removed. Particle filtration is one layer of protection; source control and ventilation with genuinely cleaner outdoor air are still necessary.
Troubleshooting common setups
The cleaner is loud, so nobody runs it
Move it closer to the people who need clean air and use the highest speed the household can tolerate. A correctly sized unit operated consistently is more useful than a larger unit that is routinely switched off. Check whether the filter is clogged, since restricted airflow can create noise and reduce performance.

Recalculate using two-thirds of the room area in square feet. Close the door to reduce the treated volume, choose a higher smoke CADR, or use multiple units whose CADRs together meet the target. Do not treat a generic room-size claim as equivalent to a smoke CADR.
The central filter does not fit or the system struggles
Turn off the system and verify the specified dimensions and filter type. Do not force a thicker or higher-resistance filter into the equipment. Ask the manufacturer or an HVAC technician whether MERV 13 or higher is compatible, and use a portable cleaner for room-level filtration in the meantime.
Smoke odor remains after filtration
Check for open windows, doors, fireplace dampers, or outdoor-air intakes that are allowing new smoke in. Inspect the portable and central filters and replace them if dirty or smoke-smelling. Continue source control; a persistent odor does not by itself identify the concentration of every pollutant.
Outdoor air improves temporarily
Use the cleaner while the room is occupied, then air out the home when local conditions are genuinely better. Close openings again if smoke rises. Conditions can change during the day, so recheck local alerts rather than assuming one improvement will last.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A practical decision checklist
- Have you checked current local smoke or air-quality conditions?
- Are exterior windows and doors closed without compromising an emergency exit?
- Is there a designated room large enough for the household to use comfortably?
- Does the portable cleaner’s smoke CADR meet at least two-thirds of that room’s floor area?
- Is the cleaner mechanical, low-ozone, and positioned with unobstructed airflow?
- Is it running continuously at the highest tolerable speed while the room is occupied?
- Have you stopped indoor smoking, candles, aerosols, high-heat cooking, and unnecessary vacuuming?
- If using central HVAC, is outdoor air set to recirculation and is a MERV 13 or higher filter confirmed compatible?
- Are filters being inspected and replaced when dirty, overloaded, or smoke-smelling?
- Can everyone remain safely cool, and is there a plan to move if the home becomes too hot?
The simplest no-fan-only arrangement is therefore: close the home, occupy one cleaner-air room, run a correctly sized portable mechanical cleaner continuously, and use central HVAC filtration only during compatible heating or cooling operation. When outdoor air becomes cleaner, ventilate the home and resume normal operation.
