Protect your Discord account by treating unexpected invites and messages as untrusted, checking what an invite asks you to do before joining, and enabling strong multi-factor authentication (MFA). A familiar username or profile picture does not prove a link is safe: Discord warns that an account you know may have been compromised. If you clicked a suspicious link or entered your password, use Discord’s official recovery route and secure the account promptly.
How can you tell if a Discord invite or message is suspicious?
Look at what the message wants you to do, not just who appears to have sent it. Phishing messages may promise free Nitro or other rewards, threaten account status, or ask for your login credentials, personal information, or payment details. Treat unexpected invites, bot DMs, and reward offers cautiously—especially when they push you to click a link or sign in.
Discord cautions that a link can appear to come from someone you know even if that person’s account has been compromised. Don’t use the sender’s identity as your only safety check, and don’t enter your Discord password or payment information after following an unexpected message link. Instead, navigate to Discord through a trusted route and check the offer there.

Discord’s guidance on safer ways to shop on Discord identifies free-reward claims, threats, and requests for credentials as phishing warning signs. Its scam and phishing bot guidance also explains how to respond to suspicious bot messages.
What should you check before joining a server?
Review the invite and the action it requests
If an invite opens in Discord, pause at the join flow and make sure you recognize the server before accepting. An invite that leads to a request for your password, payment details, or an unrelated reward claim deserves extra scrutiny. The join screen can help you limit exposure, but it cannot verify that an invite is genuine.

Choose whether server members can DM you
Discord’s invite flow lets you adjust whether members of a server can send you direct messages before you join. Turning this off can reduce one route for unwanted contact after joining. It is a privacy control, not a test of the invite’s authenticity or a guarantee that the server is safe. See Discord’s server-joining guidance for the invite flow.

Discord’s Safer Direct Messaging feature, under User Settings > Privacy & Safety, scans DMs from people who are not your friends for harmful content. It can help flag unsafe messages, but it does not establish whether a link is trustworthy. Keep applying your own judgment before clicking.

Which MFA option should you use for Discord?
Discord supports security keys and passkeys, authenticator apps, and SMS for MFA. Its guidance recommends security keys/passkeys; if you cannot use one, an authenticator app is another supported option. SMS is supported but is more exposed to interception and SIM-swap risks.

Discord says an account can have up to 16 security keys or passkeys registered at one time. That is a limit, not a requirement to enroll multiple keys. Follow Discord’s MFA setup instructions to configure the option you choose.

Save your backup codes securely
Discord’s backup codes are single-use recovery codes. Store them somewhere protected and separate from the device you use to sign in; a password manager can be one option if you use one securely. Discord says its support team cannot remove MFA from an account, so do not assume support can bypass a lost authenticator or key.

What other account settings should you secure?
- Use a strong, unique password. Do not reuse a password from another site or service.
- Review Authorized Apps. Remove applications you do not recognize, particularly after a suspicious interaction. Discord documents the process for removing a third-party application.
- Keep recovery access current. Make sure you can access the email account associated with Discord and keep MFA backup codes available in a secure place.
- Limit unnecessary contact. Review DM privacy settings and use Safer Direct Messaging as an additional filter, not as permission to trust unexpected links.
What should you do if you clicked a Discord phishing link?
If you only opened a link but did not enter information or download anything, close the page and do not continue through its prompts. If you entered your Discord credentials, payment information, or other sensitive details, act from a trusted route to Discord rather than returning through the message.

- Check your email for Discord’s “Discord Email Address changed” notice. If someone changed the email on the account, Discord says the notice includes a link that can temporarily change the account email back. Use that message only if it is genuinely from Discord, and reach Discord through a trusted route if you are unsure.
- Reset your Discord password. Use Discord’s official sign-in or recovery route. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those services too.
- Secure sign-in with MFA. Set up a security key/passkey or authenticator app if possible, then store the backup codes securely.
- Remove unrecognized Authorized Apps. Review the account’s authorized applications and revoke access you do not recognize.
- Scan the device if you downloaded a file. Discord specifically recommends a Windows Defender scan for Windows users when a malicious file may have been downloaded.
- Contact Discord through its official hacked-account support route. Discord warns that recovery may not be possible if the account has not been secured. Use its hacked account request form.
- Report the message, bot, or suspicious link. Use Discord’s in-app reporting tools for suspicious messages, and follow its Trust & Safety guidance for bots or links.
Discord says its staff will never contact users directly in-app about support matters. Treat an unsolicited DM claiming to be Discord support as suspicious rather than sharing credentials or codes.
