Public Wi-Fi is convenient, but it is not the best connection for sensitive tasks. Confirm the network with venue staff, keep your device updated, and use cellular data for banking, shopping, or other private activity when possible. If you must use a public hotspot, treat a VPN and HTTPS as layers of protection—not guarantees that every app or connection is safe.
Before you connect to public Wi-Fi
Confirm the real network
Ask staff for the exact Wi-Fi name and how to sign in. Do not select a network just because its name resembles the cafe, hotel, airport, or library; a lookalike hotspot can be set up to attract visitors. Choose a more private connection for sensitive work
If you have a choice, use your phone’s cellular connection or personal hotspot for banking, purchases, and other tasks involving sensitive information. CISA says a personal mobile connection is generally more secure than public Wi-Fi. Availability depends on your coverage, plan, and data allowance. If the task can wait, postponing it is safer than using an open hotspot.

Update your device and apps
Install available operating-system and app updates before relying on a shared network. Updates help address known vulnerabilities; they do not make an untrusted hotspot trustworthy, but they reduce the chance that your device is missing security fixes.
How to reduce risk while connected
Limit sensitive activity
Avoid entering banking credentials, payment details, or other sensitive information on open public Wi-Fi when you can use cellular data or wait. If a transaction is unavoidable and cellular service is available, turn off Wi-Fi and use the phone’s cellular connection.

Consider a VPN as an extra layer
A VPN can add protection to traffic sent over public Wi-Fi, and an older CISA/US-CERT guide recommends using one on public wireless connections. It is not a guarantee: it cannot make an unsafe device, compromised app, or untrustworthy destination safe. The cited guidance does not compare VPN providers or establish their current logging practices or features. CISA/US-CERT’s wireless security guide was produced in 2006 and updated in 2008, so treat its advice as general precautions rather than instructions for current device menus.

Turn off file sharing
Disable file sharing while using public wireless networks. The setting’s name and location vary by operating system and version, so look in your device’s network or sharing settings rather than relying on a single menu path from an older guide.

Check for HTTPS, but know what it covers
HTTPS indicates that the connection between your browser and a particular website is encrypted. It does not protect all traffic from your device, and it does not establish that the site itself is trustworthy. Mobile apps do not show the same visible HTTPS indicator, and CISA warns that some apps may not encrypt information properly. CISA’s cybersecurity best-practices factsheet, dated April 2023 in its document URL, explains Wi-Fi encryption and its limits.
Protect the device in the space
Keep your phone, tablet, or laptop in sight. Consider whether people nearby can read your screen before opening messages, documents, or account details. Physical awareness is a general precaution; the cited guidance does not establish that a particular privacy product is necessary.

Public Wi-Fi or a personal hotspot?

You may be able to use phone tethering already included in your plan. A separate portable mobile hotspot is an option for someone who needs a dedicated connection, not a security requirement.
If you have to use the venue’s network
- Verify the network: ask venue staff for its exact name and sign-in process.
- Reduce exposure: avoid banking, shopping, and other sensitive tasks; use cellular data for an urgent transaction if available.
- Add safeguards: keep software updated, disable file sharing, and consider a VPN.
- Use care with websites and apps: check for HTTPS in a browser, but do not assume it protects every app or all device traffic.
- Keep physical control: watch your device and be mindful of who can see the screen.
No single step removes every risk on a public hotspot. A trusted connection choice, current software, cautious activity, and basic device security work together.
