No wallet can make you physically safe. The strongest practical approach is to separate the threats: keep only a modest amount on devices you use every day, store long-term holdings behind independently backed-up keys, verify every transaction on a trusted signer, and plan what to do if someone steals a device, finds a backup, or forces you to authorize a payment.
Physical coercion changes the problem from ordinary cybersecurity to personal safety and key management. Hardware wallets, passphrases, multisignature policies and durable backups can reduce particular attack paths, but none guarantees that an attacker cannot threaten you, discover your secrets or compel a transaction.
Start with the threat you are actually facing
“Physical coercion” includes any situation in which a person threatens, intimidates or restrains you to obtain a recovery phrase, unlock code or signed transaction. Theft can be less direct: an attacker may take your phone, copy a written seed, search a safe or compromise a computer and wait for you to approve a payment.
The controls are different for each case. A disconnected signing device helps against malware on an internet-connected computer, but it does not stop someone standing in front of you. A hidden or passphrase-protected wallet may reduce casual discovery, but a determined attacker may understand the arrangement or keep applying pressure. No reliable prevalence estimate for these incidents is established in the official guidance discussed here, so decisions should be based on your exposure and recovery ability rather than an assumed probability.

| Threat | What the attacker is trying to obtain | Controls that address part of it | What those controls cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote compromise | Keys or an unauthorized transaction through malware, a malicious extension or a compromised computer | Offline signing, a dedicated signer, updated devices and careful transaction review | They do not protect you if a person compels you to use the wallet |
| Device theft | Access to an unlocked phone, computer or signing device | Strong device authentication, encryption, automatic locking and keeping savings off routinely used devices | A stolen device may still expose accounts if its credentials or recovery material are available |
| Backup discovery | A written or metal recovery phrase, private key or wallet-policy backup | Separate physical locations, discreet storage and limiting who knows where backups are kept | Durable media preserves a secret; it does not hide the secret from someone who finds it |
| Forced authorization | Your cooperation: an unlocked wallet, passphrase or signed transfer | Personal-safety planning, limited everyday balances and an arrangement that does not depend on one person or place | No technical wallet feature can guarantee safety during a confrontation |
If someone confronts you, protect your life first
Do not physically resist a robber or try to prove that your wallet is secure. A cryptocurrency balance is not worth escalating a threat. If you can do so without increasing danger, comply with the immediate demand and move to safety. Contact emergency services or local police when you are safe, and tell trusted people what happened.
Do not rehearse a complicated deception that requires you to argue, reach for a second device or reveal that a decoy exists. A plan that works only when an attacker accepts your explanation is not a dependable safety control. The useful preparation is quieter: keep routine balances limited, know which keys protect savings, and make sure you can recover or move funds after the incident.
Treat the recovery phrase as the master credential
A recovery phrase, mnemonic or private key is not a password that support staff can reset. It is the material from which wallet accounts are controlled. Ethereum.org states: “Anyone who has it can access all of your accounts and drain every asset.” Anyone who obtains the phrase should therefore be treated as having control, even if your phone or hardware device remains in your possession.
Never disclose or digitize it casually
- Do not enter a recovery phrase into a website, support chat, form, browser extension or app unless you are following the wallet’s documented recovery process on a trusted device.
- Legitimate support does not need the words. A request for them is a theft warning.
- Do not photograph or screenshot the phrase, place it in ordinary phone notes or let it enter an automatic cloud backup.
- Do not send it by email or messaging service, and do not let another person copy it merely to “help” with setup.
Keep a durable copy separate from the wallet
Paper can be damaged by water, fire and handling. A purpose-made metal backup can improve physical durability, but it remains a readable secret. Store it where unauthorized people cannot discover or photograph it, and keep it physically apart from the signing device and its PIN. A safe or lockbox may preserve the backup; neither prevents coercion if you are forced to reveal access.
Use more than one secure location for important savings when you can protect each location. Redundancy reduces the chance that one fire, theft or building failure destroys the only copy, but every additional copy is another secret that must remain private. Bitcoin.org summarizes the principle plainly: “Single points of failure are bad for security.”
Test recovery before depending on the arrangement
- Read the wallet maker’s current recovery instructions on a trusted device.
- Use a spare or reset device, not the only device holding your live wallet, to enter the phrase through the documented process.
- Confirm that the restored account derives the expected addresses and balances without exposing the phrase to a networked note-taking or backup service.
- If you use a passphrase or multisignature policy, test those additional recovery materials at the same time.
- Record which backup belongs to which wallet without writing the secret in a way that makes discovery easier.
Do not move the only copy into an unfamiliar backup system until you have verified that the system can restore the wallet. If the phrase has been photographed, typed into an untrusted site or seen by someone who should not have it, treat the wallet as compromised and transfer remaining funds to a newly generated wallet using a clean, trusted process.

Limit what a thief can reach on an everyday device
Use a routinely connected phone or computer for spending money, not as the sole home of long-term savings. Keep the everyday wallet balance modest enough that losing the device or being forced to unlock it does not expose your entire financial reserve. Hold savings in a separately managed arrangement with its own backups.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use a strong device passcode and automatic locking; enable the platform’s storage encryption and keep the operating system and wallet software current.
- Do not leave recovery phrases, private keys or wallet-policy files in downloads, screenshots, password-free notes or synchronized folders.
- Review wallet addresses and transaction details on the wallet’s trusted display before approving a payment.
- Keep a written inventory of which wallet controls which funds, but do not put the corresponding secret in the same easily found location.
- Separate devices, keys and physical locations when the value at risk justifies the additional operational work.
These measures mainly reduce opportunistic theft and remote compromise. They do not make it safe to resist a person who is demanding access, and they do not turn an unlocked device into a secure vault.
Use offline signing to reduce online attack paths
A hardware wallet or other offline signer keeps private keys away from an ordinary network-connected computer. The online device prepares an unsigned transaction; the signer displays the transaction, signs it internally and returns a signed result for broadcasting. A compromised computer may still prepare a transaction that sends funds to the wrong recipient, so the signer’s screen must be treated as the source of truth.
A careful signing workflow
- Create the transaction on the online device without entering the private key there.
- Transfer the unsigned transaction to the signing device using the wallet’s documented method.
- On the signer, inspect the destination address, amount, network and fee. Compare the address with the intended recipient through a trusted channel; do not rely only on a label shown by the computer.
- Reject the transaction if any displayed detail differs from what you intended.
- Approve and sign only after the independent review.
- Return the signed transaction to the online device and broadcast it, then keep the confirmation and transaction identifier for your records.
This process can stop malware from silently substituting an output when the user actually checks the signer’s display. It cannot stop a person from threatening the holder, stealing a separately stored recovery phrase or forcing approval of a transaction that looks legitimate.
Passphrases and decoy wallets: useful concept, serious failure mode
Some wallets combine the mnemonic with an additional passphrase to derive a different wallet. The passphrase can make a separate wallet appear under the same seed and may support plausible deniability in a carefully designed setup. It is not a second-factor service that can tell you when a value is wrong.
As the Bitcoin Developer Guide explains, any passphrase input produces a seemingly valid derived wallet. A typing error, a missing space or a forgotten capitalization can therefore open an empty but valid wallet instead of producing a clear “wrong passphrase” message. Loss of the intended passphrase can make the funds inaccessible even when the mnemonic is intact.

Before enabling a passphrase
- Confirm that your wallet software supports passphrases in the way you expect and document its exact derivation and recovery behavior.
- Choose a method you can reproduce accurately under stress; arbitrary complexity is not useful if you cannot recover it.
- Keep the passphrase backup separate from the mnemonic, while ensuring that your recovery plan still explains how the two are used.
- Perform a complete restore test, including verification of addresses and balances, before depositing significant value.
- Decide in advance what happens if you are unable to use the passphrase. Do not assume an attacker will accept a decoy or that a decoy will remain undiscovered.
A passphrase is an advanced key-management choice, not a guarantee against an informed or persistent attacker. If you cannot test and maintain the recovery process, a simpler arrangement with fewer failure points may be safer.
Multisignature can remove one point of control
Multisignature (multisig) requires a threshold of independent keys to authorize a transaction. A policy such as 3-of-5 can require any three of five signers, so compromising one device or one storage location is not automatically enough to spend the funds. The security benefit comes from independence: keys should not all be on the same device, in the same room or under the same login.
What the extra security costs
- You must keep enough signers available to meet the threshold after a theft, loss, death or hardware failure.
- Every signer needs a tested backup and a clear owner or custodian.
- Transactions require coordination, which can slow urgent payments and create opportunities for address mistakes.
- The wallet policy itself is part of the recovery data; it is not enough to retain a random collection of seed phrases.
BIP 388 warns that, for wallet policies outside common standard cases, a seed alone may not reveal existing funds. Preserve the wallet policy, descriptors or equivalent recovery information required by the software, and verify that a complete restore can find the expected addresses. Losing that policy backup can cause permanent loss even when every individual seed still exists.

Multisig is most useful when the value justifies several independent locations and the people involved can maintain the process. It is less suitable when one person cannot reliably perform recovery, when signers are stored together, or when the owner has never completed a test transaction. Start with a small amount, document the procedure and verify that the required threshold can be reached before moving savings.
Compare controls by threat, independence and recovery burden
| Control | Best use | Independence gained | Main failure or recovery burden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limited everyday wallet | Reduce loss from device theft or forced access | Keeps routine spending separate from savings | Does not protect the amount you leave on the device; requires disciplined transfers |
| Offline signer | Reduce malware and compromised-computer signing risk | Private key stays apart from the networked device | You must inspect the signer’s display and keep the device and its backup usable |
| Passphrase wallet | Derive a separate wallet and possibly conceal savings | Adds a secret distinct from the mnemonic | A typo or lost passphrase creates another valid wallet and can make funds inaccessible |
| Multisignature policy | Prevent one stolen key or location from spending alone | Distributes authority across several keys, devices and places | Coordination, signer loss and wallet-policy backup become critical |
| Durable seed media | Survive fire, water or physical wear | Preserves the recovery material over time | It is still a readable secret and does not prevent discovery or coercion |
Design backups as a recovery system, not a pile of words
Map every item required to restore control: the mnemonic or private key, any passphrase, the wallet-policy or descriptor data for multisig, device PIN information where appropriate, and instructions for the software version you use. Store the items so that one thief does not automatically obtain everything, while making sure your future self can identify the correct combination.
The Metropolitan Police guidance describes recovery seeds as typically 12 or 24 words, but wallet implementations vary. The word count alone does not tell you whether a wallet also needs a passphrase, derivation path or policy file. Follow the current documentation for your specific wallet rather than assuming that any 12- or 24-word phrase can restore any account.

A practical backup review
- List each wallet and the assets it controls.
- Identify every secret and policy file needed for recovery.
- Place durable copies in separate, access-controlled locations.
- Check that no backup is being synchronized automatically to an online account.
- Run a recovery test after setup changes and at reasonable intervals.
- Destroy obsolete copies when a wallet is retired or funds are moved.
More copies improve resilience only when they remain confidential. A metal plate, safe or bank box addresses durability and storage; it does not provide anonymity, personal protection or plausible deniability by itself.

Prepare an incident response before you need it
If a phone or computer is stolen but the recovery secret is safe
From a clean, trusted device, follow the wallet’s documented process to restore or move funds. Change device credentials and invalidate sessions where the wallet service supports that feature. Do not assume that a screen lock alone proves the stolen device cannot be accessed.
If a recovery phrase or private key may have been seen
Assume control has been lost. Generate a new wallet and transfer the remaining assets using a trusted device and a transaction you verify carefully. Do not continue using the exposed wallet for savings, even if no unauthorized transaction has appeared yet.
If a transaction was forced or looks unauthorized
Preserve the transaction identifier, time, addresses and relevant device details. Contact the exchange, custodian or service involved immediately if one handled the transfer, and report the theft to law enforcement. Blockchain transfers may not be reversible, so speed and accurate records matter. Do not send additional funds to anyone promising to “recover” the original payment.
If a multisignature signer or policy backup is lost
Determine whether the remaining independent signers still meet the threshold. Do not delete or reinitialize the surviving devices until you have confirmed the wallet policy and recovery path. If the threshold cannot be met, consult the wallet’s official recovery documentation before making changes.

- Keep a small operating balance in a hardened everyday wallet.
- Generate long-term savings on a signer that keeps keys away from networked devices.
- Verify receiving addresses and every outgoing transaction on the trusted display.
- Create durable backups and store them in more than one secure physical location.
- Test restoration, including any passphrase or multisignature policy, before depositing substantial value.
- Use multisignature only when you can maintain independent signers and policy backups.
- Document an emergency plan that prioritizes personal safety and explains how to move funds after a secret is exposed.
This arrangement reduces the damage from a stolen device, a compromised computer or a single failed location. It does not promise safety during a confrontation. The final control is judgment: do not disclose secrets casually, do not treat a durable backup as a hiding place, and never put your life at risk to protect a wallet.
