Stop before sending any cryptocurrency you were unexpectedly asked for. Do not click the message’s links, call its number, scan its QR code, or send a test payment. Verify the request through contact details you find independently, because crypto transfers are usually difficult to reverse.
What to do when a crypto payment request arrives
Treat an unexpected request for cryptocurrency as a likely scam until the organization or person is verified through a separate, trusted channel. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says government agencies, law enforcement, utilities and prize promoters will not tell people to pay them in cryptocurrency. A message that claims to represent one of them and demands immediate payment is using impersonation and pressure, not a normal payment process.
The FTC’s consumer alert puts the rule plainly: “Any unexpected tweet, text, email, call, or social media message — particularly from someone you don’t know — asking you to pay them in advance for something, including with cryptocurrency, is a scam.” The agency also states: “Only scammers demand payment in cryptocurrency.” Those statements are U.S. consumer guidance, but the verification habits are useful anywhere.

Do not act while a caller or message is setting the deadline. Scammers create a crisis—an alleged arrest, account closure, unpaid bill, canceled payment, tax problem, prize, job opportunity or threatened loss—to prevent you from checking the story.

Separate the message from the verification
Do not use any phone number, web address, email address, button or QR code supplied in the suspicious communication. A compromised account can contain convincing branding and correct personal details. Those details do not prove that the payment request is genuine.
Verify independently
Open the organization’s website by typing its address yourself or using a bookmark you already trust. Use a phone number printed on a statement, card or prior official correspondence. Ask whether the organization sent the request, whether it accepts cryptocurrency and whether the wallet address or payment instructions are theirs. If you cannot obtain an independent confirmation, do not pay.
Why cryptocurrency requests deserve extra caution
Transfers generally cannot be reversed
Cryptocurrency transactions normally move to the address entered by the sender. If the address belongs to a scammer, a mistaken transfer or a fraudulent payment may not be recoverable. Contacting the service you used to send the money is still important, but neither the service nor the FTC can promise that funds will be returned.

Crypto is not a government-insured bank deposit
Crypto holdings are not protected like deposits at an FDIC-insured bank. Depending on where assets are held, a lost password, wrong recipient, compromised wallet or failed exchange can leave no institution able to restore the funds. This is a limit of the system and of the service involved, not a reason to trust a caller who claims to be able to “protect” your balance.
A QR code is an instruction, not evidence
A QR code can encode a wallet address or payment destination. Scanning it may make sending funds easier, but it does not confirm who controls that address. In the FTC’s crypto-ATM examples, an impersonator tells a target to buy cryptocurrency and scan a supplied code; the code sends the funds to the scammer.
How to verify a suspicious request: a safe sequence
- Stop. Put down the phone or close the message. Do not let a stated deadline control your decision.
- Record the basics without interacting. Note the claimed organization or person, the amount, the reason given, the requested deadline and the payment method. Preserve the message for reporting, but do not reply.
- Avoid the supplied route. Do not click its link, call its number, scan its QR code, open an attachment or install software it recommends.
- Find a known-good route. Type the organization’s web address yourself, use an existing bookmark, or call a number already printed on a statement or card.
- Ask a precise question. Tell the real organization that you received a cryptocurrency request and ask whether it sent it. Provide the alleged case, invoice or account reference only through the verified channel.
- Check the payment destination. If the organization confirms a legitimate crypto payment, obtain the wallet address through that independent channel. Compare every character before approving a transaction; do not rely on a screenshot or a code forwarded by the requester.
- Refuse test payments. A small “verification” transfer still goes to the recipient and can establish a pattern for a larger demand. Legitimate verification should occur through the organization’s normal process, not an improvised crypto transfer.
- Stop if the story changes. New fees, secrecy demands, extra addresses, gift-card requests or instructions to move funds to “protect” them are reasons to end contact and report it.
Red flags that identify common crypto scams
| Signal | What it often means | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Unexpected contact | An unsolicited message, call or social-media request asks for cryptocurrency or an advance payment. | Assume it is fraudulent until independently verified. |
| Urgency or threats | The sender claims arrest, account closure, disconnection, penalties or loss unless you pay immediately. | End the conversation and contact the organization through a known-good route. |
| Impersonation | The sender claims to be a government agency, police department, utility, prize promoter, employer, payment company or wallet provider. | Use the organization’s published contact details, never the message’s details. |
| QR-code or crypto-ATM directions | You are told to buy coins, visit an ATM and scan a code that routes funds to an address chosen by the caller. | Do not buy, scan or send. Report the impersonation. |
| Secrecy | You are told not to consult family, a bank, the real organization or law enforcement. | Share the claim with a trusted person and verify independently. |
| “Protect your funds” story | You are told to transfer assets to a new wallet or account to keep them safe. | Do not transfer anything at the caller’s direction. |
| Nonstandard payment demand | A date, fine, job fee, online-dating contact or business transaction suddenly requires cryptocurrency. | Stop. Legitimate government agencies and businesses do not demand crypto to resolve these matters. |
Examples of messages that should not be trusted
“Your wallet is blocked” phishing email
The FTC describes phishing emails impersonating MetaMask and claiming that a wallet has been blocked. The email may contain a button to “restore” access or confirm identity. Do not use that button. Open the wallet provider’s official site or app independently and check for a notice there. If no independently verified notice exists, delete or report the message. Keep device security software updated, as the FTC recommends for phishing risks; an update does not guarantee wallet security and does not validate a payment request.

“Your payment was canceled” notice
Another FTC example impersonates PayPal and claims that a payment was canceled. The message attempts to make the recipient call a number or click a link, where an impostor can request credentials or cryptocurrency. Check the transaction by signing in through an independently opened official app or website. Never call a number in the email to resolve a supposed cancellation.
Recommended Free Tools
Crypto-ATM emergency call
An impersonator may claim to be from law enforcement, a government office, a utility or a prize program. The caller invents a problem, orders the target to buy cryptocurrency and supplies a QR code. The ATM purchase does not make the demand legitimate; scanning the code can send the coins to the scammer. No genuine emergency is resolved by following an unsolicited caller’s crypto-ATM instructions.
Dating, employment and fine scams
An online dating contact may say they need cryptocurrency for an emergency. A supposed employer may require a crypto “equipment” or “registration” fee. A caller may demand crypto for a fine or to keep money safe. Treat each as highly suspicious. Do not send money to someone you have not independently verified, and do not allow a relationship, job offer or threat to replace normal payment and identification procedures.

How to protect your crypto wallet before a scam starts
Protect the account and the device
- Keep your operating system, browser and security software updated. The FTC recommends current security software as general protection against phishing threats.
- Sign in to a wallet or exchange by opening its official app or typing a known address, not by following an unsolicited message.
- Review account and transaction alerts through the service’s own settings. An alert in an email or text is not proof that an account event occurred.
- Do not disclose passwords, recovery information or other wallet-access details to a caller or support account that contacted you first.
- Use a separate, trusted channel whenever a message asks you to move funds, change a destination or approve an unfamiliar action.
These are general protective habits, not a guarantee against theft. Wallets can be online, stored on a computer or kept on external storage. Each arrangement has different failure modes. A lost password, wrong recipient, compromised wallet or failed exchange can prevent recovery, so choose a wallet and backup process only after reading the current official documentation for that specific wallet and network.
Understand what a wallet can and cannot do
A wallet does not make an unverified payment safe. It can hold or authorize transactions, but it cannot determine whether a caller is a real government employee, whether a dating profile is genuine or whether a QR code belongs to a charity. The person approving the transaction remains responsible for checking the request and destination.
Do not treat hardware or security accessories as a complete answer
A different storage device or security accessory may address some technical risks, but the FTC material does not establish that a particular product prevents phishing, validates recipients or recovers coins after a scam. Safe verification behavior remains necessary regardless of where the wallet is stored.

How to check a crypto donation request
Donation appeals deserve the same pause as any other unexpected request. A real charity may accept cryptocurrency, but a logo, social-media account or urgent disaster story does not prove that the wallet address belongs to it.
- Find the organization’s official website independently.
- Navigate to its donation page without using a link in the appeal.
- Confirm that the organization lists cryptocurrency as an accepted donation method.
- Compare the wallet address shown on that independently opened page with the address you were given. Treat any mismatch as a stop signal.
- Search the organization and the wallet address independently for warnings or impersonation reports.
- For additional due diligence, consult charity evaluators such as BBB Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator or CharityWatch, which the FTC identifies as resources for researching charities.
Do not send a “test” donation to an address supplied only in a direct message. If an organization cannot confirm the address through its own official channel, do not send.
What to do if you already sent cryptocurrency
- Stop further contact and payments. Do not pay a second fee for “recovery,” “verification” or “release.” A new demand is often another stage of the same scam.
- Contact the service used to send the payment. Report the transaction as fraud and ask what incident or account-freeze options exist. Provide the transaction details the service requests.
- Preserve evidence. Save messages, email headers, phone numbers, usernames, wallet addresses, QR images, receipts, dates, amounts and transaction IDs. Do not alter screenshots in a way that removes identifying information.
- Report the incident to the FTC. Include the impersonated organization, contact method, requested amount, destination address and any service or ATM involved.
- Secure unaffected accounts. From a trusted device and official site, change compromised passwords and review account activity. If a device or wallet may be compromised, follow the provider’s current official incident instructions.
- Expect uncertainty. Reporting can help investigators and service providers identify the scam, but cryptocurrency payments typically cannot be reversed and recovery is not guaranteed.
Questions to ask before approving any crypto transfer
- Did I expect this request, or did it arrive without a prior transaction?
- Is someone creating a deadline, threatening punishment or demanding secrecy?
- Does the requester claim to be a government agency, law enforcement, utility, prize promoter, employer, business or wallet provider?
- Am I being told to buy cryptocurrency, use an ATM or scan a QR code?
- Did I obtain the contact details and wallet address independently?
- Can the claimed organization confirm the request through its official channel?
- Would I still approve the payment if the caller stopped pressuring me?
- Can I afford to lose the entire amount if the address is wrong or the recipient is fraudulent?
If any answer raises doubt, do not send. Close the conversation and verify first.
What this guidance does not establish
FTC consumer alerts explain scam behavior, independent verification and general device hygiene. They do not provide wallet-specific instructions for seed-phrase storage, recovery procedures, transaction simulation, smart-contract approvals, address-format validation or the security properties of particular hardware wallets. For those technical questions, use the current documentation for the exact wallet and network, and keep the separate anti-scam rule in place: never approve a transaction merely because a message, QR code or caller says it is urgent.
Bottom line
An unexpected cryptocurrency demand is a stop signal. Ignore the message’s links, phone numbers and QR codes; verify through contact details you already trust; and remember that a completed crypto transfer is usually difficult or impossible to reverse. Updating your device and securing wallet access help, but neither replaces independent verification of every payment request.
