Protect your account by refusing to receive, move, or withdraw money for anyone you do not know and trust. A money mule is a person who receives or transfers funds obtained through fraud for someone else. Some mules know what they are doing; others believe a fake employer, romantic contact, friend, or caller. Either way, your account can be frozen, overdrawn, or linked to an investigation. If money has already moved through your account, stop communicating with the requester, contact your financial institution immediately through a trusted channel, and report the incident.
What is a money mule?
A money mule moves money or goods for another person when the underlying funds came from fraud or another crime. The mule may receive a deposit, withdraw cash, buy cryptocurrency, forward a wire or ACH payment, mail a package, or pass money through a payment service. Criminals use other people’s accounts to make stolen funds harder to trace and to distance themselves from victims.
Not every recruited person understands the criminal purpose. A person can be manipulated by a convincing job advertisement, an online relationship, or a caller pretending to be from a bank. Lack of knowledge does not guarantee that law enforcement or a bank will treat the activity as harmless. The FBI warns that money-mule activity can lead to prosecution, financial losses, identity theft, and damage to credit or banking access. The actual outcome depends on the facts, evidence, and applicable law.
The most important rule is simple: do not let another person use your personal or business account as a pass-through for their money. The FBI’s guidance is direct: “A legitimate company will not ask you to do this.”

How money-mule scams recruit people
Fake jobs and “easy money”
A recruiter may offer a remote assistant, payment processor, package handler, or finance position that appears to require little work for unusually high pay. The job may ask you to open an account in your name, accept customer payments, keep a commission, and send the balance elsewhere. Instructions can involve wire transfers, ACH payments, prepaid cards, cryptocurrency, cash withdrawals, or shipping goods.
A legitimate employer pays you through normal payroll or an established contractor process. It does not need your personal checking account to receive company revenue and forward it. Be especially cautious when the person refuses a video interview, uses a generic email address, pressures you to act immediately, or tells you not to discuss the arrangement with your bank.
Romance and friendship approaches
An online contact may build trust and then ask you to receive or forward money “temporarily.” They may say they are traveling, unable to access an account, helping a relative, or making an investment. Some send money first to make the request seem safe. Sending money back to an online romantic interest is risky even when the person has sent funds to you.

Account-opening requests
Someone may instruct you to open a bank, payment, or cryptocurrency account in your own name, or to add them as an authorized user. They might ask for online-banking credentials, debit-card details, a Social Security number, or verification codes. Opening an account at another person’s direction can expose you to losses and leave your identity attached to transactions you did not control.
Impersonated bank or government calls
A caller may claim that your account has been hacked or that a criminal is moving money in your name. The caller then tells you to “protect” your funds by transferring them to a supposedly safe account, buying cryptocurrency, or reading a one-time verification code. The Federal Trade Commission states: “Someone who says you have to move your money to protect it is a scammer.”
How can I tell if a job offer is a money-mule scam?
Look at the payment instructions, not just the company name or polished website. Ask who legally owns the money, why it must pass through your account, and why the employer cannot pay vendors directly. A request to receive customer or company funds into your personal account and forward them elsewhere is the central warning sign. A commission, job title, contract, or promise that the arrangement lasts only a few days does not change that.

Check the employer independently. Type the organization’s web address yourself, look for a publicly listed telephone number, and ask its human-resources department whether the person and role are real. Do not use a phone number, email address, form, or payment portal supplied only by the recruiter. If the employer cannot explain a conventional payroll or invoicing process, decline the offer. The FBI’s guidance is categorical: “A legitimate company will not ask you to do this.”

Warning signs that a request may make you a money mule
One unusual detail is not proof of a crime, but several of these patterns together should end the conversation:
- An unsolicited job, investment, prize, or work-from-home offer promises quick money for moving funds.
- You are told to use your personal account for a company’s or another person’s payments.
- The requester asks you to open a new account, receive a deposit, and send most of it elsewhere.
- You are allowed to keep a percentage or fixed fee for each transfer. A commission does not make the arrangement legitimate.
- Instructions involve wire transfers, ACH, money-service businesses, gift cards, cryptocurrency, cash withdrawals, or shipping packages.
- An online contact you have never met in person asks you to receive or forward money.
- The person creates urgency, threatens consequences, or insists that you keep the activity secret.
- You are told to use contact information supplied by the requester instead of verifying an employer or bank independently.
- A caller demands a one-time passcode, password, debit-card number, or remote access to your device.
Criminal campaigns can use employment, romance, lottery, non-delivery, and other internet-enabled stories. Judge the requested payment activity, not how believable the story sounds. A real photograph, a friendly conversation, or a small transfer that did not cause an immediate problem is not proof that a later payment is legitimate.
How to prevent yourself from becoming a money mule
Refuse account routing
Tell the requester that you will not receive, withdraw, or forward money for them. Do not make an exception because the transfer is described as temporary, because you can keep a fee, or because the person claims to be a legitimate business. Do not open a bank or cryptocurrency account for someone else’s use.
Protect financial and login information
Do not give an untrusted person your account number, routing number, debit-card information, online-banking password, Social Security number, or one-time verification code. A bank employee will not need you to transfer funds to keep them safe. Never approve a login or payment that you did not initiate.

Find the organization’s official website and contact information independently. Do not rely on a phone number, email address, form, or website supplied only by the person who contacted you.

Keep online relationships separate from your finances
Do not send money to a romantic or social-media contact you have not met and independently verified. Do not accept money from that person with an agreement to forward it. A prior conversation, photographs, or a small successful transfer does not establish that later funds are safe.
Handle unexpected bank alerts safely
If a message or caller says there is suspicious activity, do not click the supplied link, call the supplied number, move money, or disclose a code. End the contact and call your institution using the number on a statement, the back of your card, or another trusted official channel.
Use a simple refusal
You do not have to debate the story or prove that the requester is a criminal. Say, “I do not allow anyone else to use my account,” then stop responding. Blocking the account or number can prevent additional pressure. If the contact claims to represent an employer or bank, verify that claim separately rather than continuing the conversation.

Act quickly, but do not try to conceal the transaction or send additional money to “fix” it. Use the response path that matches what happened.
| What happened | Immediate action | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| You received money and have not forwarded it | Do not withdraw or return it to the requester. Stop communication and notify your financial institution through a trusted channel. Ask what to do with the funds and whether any payment is pending. | The deposit may be fraudulent or reversible. Moving it can increase your loss and make the transaction harder to investigate. |
| You forwarded, withdrew, or spent the money | Stop all further transfers and tell the bank exactly what you received, where it went, and when. Provide transaction records and ask whether any payment-recall or account-protection steps are available. | A fake payment can be reversed after it appears to clear, leaving you responsible for money already sent onward. |
| You shared account or card details | Contact the institution immediately, explain which details were exposed, and ask about closing or changing the account, replacing cards, blocking transactions, and monitoring access. | Stolen credentials can be used for unauthorized withdrawals, new-account fraud, or identity theft. |
| You shared a verification code or approved a login | Call the real institution immediately using trusted contact information. Change credentials and ask whether sessions, cards, or transfers must be revoked. | A code can authorize a transaction or let an intruder take over your account. |
| A caller persuaded you to move money to “protect” it | Contact the real institution at once and report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Do not call the number used by the impersonator. | The transfer was made under a scammer’s instructions, not as a legitimate security procedure. |
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises people who think they may have been involved in a money-mule scheme to tell their financial institution promptly and consider changing accounts. If a scammer has your bank-account information, the FTC advises closing the account immediately. Ask the institution whether it recommends a new account number, replacement cards, online-banking reset, additional monitoring, or written documentation.
Ask the bank to review pending and recently completed transactions, explain which payments can still be stopped, and give you a case or reference number. Policies differ by institution and by payment type, so do not assume a wire, ACH payment, card transaction, or cryptocurrency transfer can be recalled. Closing an account does not erase earlier transactions or guarantee that you will not owe money.

If the account was used without your permission, state that clearly and identify the transactions you did not authorize. Keep copies of statements, notices, and messages. Do not delete evidence, alter records, or move funds between accounts to hide what happened.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy a fake check can leave you owing the bank
Scammers often send a check and ask you to forward part of the proceeds, buy goods, or send a portion back. A deposited check can appear available before the bank discovers that it is counterfeit, altered, or drawn on an account that cannot pay. When the check is returned, the bank can remove the full deposit, including money you already sent away. Your account may become overdrawn, and fees can apply.
Do not rely on an available-balance display as proof that a check is genuine. Do not spend or transfer funds from an unexpected check until your bank confirms what it recommends. If you already acted, tell the bank that the deposit may be fraudulent and provide the check, messages, shipping information, and transfer receipts. There is no guaranteed way to recover money sent to a scammer.
How to report suspected money-mule fraud
Reporting helps financial institutions and investigators connect related accounts and recruitment campaigns. Preserve evidence before deleting anything:
- Save emails, text messages, social-media profiles, phone numbers, job postings, payment instructions, receipts, package-tracking details, and screenshots.
- Write a timeline with dates, amounts, account numbers involved, names used, and what you were told.
- Report suspected internet-enabled money-mule activity to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov.
- Report a scam or impersonation to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Ask the CFPB about consumer-fraud assistance and reporting options. The CFPB also identifies your state attorney general and local police as possible contacts, depending on the circumstances.
Tell your bank that you are reporting suspected fraud and ask for a case or reference number. If personal information was exposed, ask what identity-theft protections and account changes it recommends. Be factual; do not delete evidence or alter records. Reporting does not guarantee that funds will be recovered, but it creates a record that may help investigators and the institutions involved.

The FBI and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center warn of possible criminal prosecution, personal liability for victims’ losses, identity theft, negative credit effects, and difficulty opening bank accounts. Do not make additional transfers because someone promises that doing so will clear your name. Do not assume that being fooled automatically removes every financial or legal consequence, or that suspicion alone proves criminal intent.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the request: Is someone asking you to receive, move, withdraw, or buy something with money that is not yours?
- Pause: Do not click links, open an account, send a payment, or share a code while you evaluate it.
- Verify independently: Contact the supposed employer or bank through information you found yourself.
- Refuse: End any arrangement that uses your account as a transfer channel.
- Contain exposure: If details or funds were shared, contact the financial institution immediately and follow its instructions.
- Document and report: Preserve the communications and report through IC3.gov, ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and other appropriate authorities.
A request to move money is not made safe by a convincing explanation, a promised commission, or money that appears to have cleared. Keeping your account out of the transaction is the most reliable protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a money mule?
A money mule receives, moves, withdraws, or ships money or goods obtained through fraud for someone else. The person may know the purpose or may be deceived by a job, romance, or impersonation scam.
Can I keep a percentage of a transfer legally?
Keeping a fee does not make the arrangement legitimate. A request to route company or another person’s money through your account is a major warning sign, especially when it comes with instructions for wires, ACH payments, cryptocurrency, cash, or packages.
What if the money is already in my account?
Do not withdraw, spend, or return it to the requester. Stop communicating, contact your financial institution through a trusted number, and ask what to do with the deposit and any pending payment.
What if I already sent money?
Stop further transfers and tell the bank exactly what happened, including dates, amounts, destinations, and payment type. Ask whether any protective or recall steps are available, but do not assume recovery is possible.
Should I close my account after sharing details?
Contact the institution immediately. The CFPB advises considering a change of accounts, and the FTC advises closing an account immediately if a scammer has the bank-account information. Follow the institution’s instructions; closing the account does not erase earlier liability.
Where can I report a suspected money-mule scam?
Report internet-enabled activity to IC3.gov and scams or impersonation to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Depending on the circumstances, the CFPB, your state attorney general, or local police may also be appropriate contacts.
The Bottom Line
Never let an employer, online contact, or caller use your account as a money-transfer route. If funds or account details were exposed, stop communicating, contact your financial institution through a trusted channel, preserve evidence, and report the scam promptly.
