First, find out what information was exposed. Change the affected password and any reused password through the bank’s official app or website, turn on multifactor authentication if available, contact the bank using a number you verify independently, and monitor transactions. If the breach exposed your Social Security number or other identity information, also use the federal recovery guidance at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach and consider a credit freeze or fraud alert.
1. Find out what the breach exposed
Read the breach notice carefully and check the breached organization’s official site for details. The response depends on whether the exposed information included bank login credentials, card details, account numbers, or broader identity information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends matching your next steps to the type of data involved. FTC: What to do if your information is exposed in a data breach
- Bank credentials or account access: Secure the account and contact the bank.
- Card details: Watch for unfamiliar charges and ask the card provider whether to cancel and replace the card.
- Social Security number or other identity information: Take the identity-theft steps in addition to protecting your existing bank account.
2. Secure passwords and sign-in access
Change exposed and reused passwords
Change the exposed password, and change it anywhere else you reused it. If financial-account credentials were shared with a company affected by a breach, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises changing the financial-account password and contacting the bank about additional steps. Use the bank’s official app or type its known website address yourself; do not follow a password-reset link in an unexpected message. CFPB: What should I do if my personal information was stolen?

Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) if the bank offers it. The bank may support different methods, so check its security settings and recovery instructions. FTC guidance says an authenticator app is safer than text or email codes against risks such as SIM-swap or email-account compromise. A physical security key is the strongest method discussed in the FTC’s guide, but availability depends on the bank and your devices. Confirm compatibility before buying a key. 3. Contact your bank through a verified channel
Use the phone number on your bank statement, or open the bank’s official app or website and find its fraud or security contact details. Do not call a number in an unexpected text, email, or incoming call. Tell the bank what kind of information was exposed and ask whether it recommends changing account details, placing restrictions, or replacing a compromised card. CFPB: What should I do if my personal information was stolen?
4. Monitor transactions and report anything suspicious quickly
Review recent and new account activity regularly. Look for small unfamiliar debits as well as larger transactions; fraud can appear months after information is stolen. Report suspicious activity to the bank or card provider as soon as you spot it, and ask whether a card should be cancelled and replaced. If you see an unauthorized transfer
Contact the bank or credit union promptly and state clearly that you did not authorize the transfer. CFPB guidance says a bank or credit union generally has ten business days to investigate after notification of an unauthorized transaction, subject to the circumstances described in its guidance. Reporting deadlines and possible liability depend on the transaction, account type, and timing, so do not assume one deadline applies to every case. Keep notes of when you contacted the institution and follow its instructions. CFPB: What should I do if I see an unauthorized transaction on my bank account?
5. If identity information was exposed, take identity-theft steps too
If a Social Security number or other identity data was exposed, follow the FTC’s breach-specific steps at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach. Consider placing a credit freeze with each nationwide credit bureau, or a fraud alert. These tools are aimed at preventing or flagging new-credit identity fraud; they do not secure an existing checking account or replace transaction monitoring. The FTC also advises considering free identity-monitoring services offered by the organization involved in the breach. Such monitoring can be one part of a response, but it does not replace contacting your bank or checking account activity. FTC: What to do if your information is exposed in a data breach
6. Watch for scams that use the breach as a pretext
A scammer may pose as bank staff, a government agency, or a fraud investigator and claim your money is at risk. Do not share a verification code or move money to another account to “protect” it. The FTC says to contact your real bank using a trusted number you find independently, such as the one on a statement. FTC: Got a call about fraud activity on your bank account? It could be a scammer
