If your nails become thin, slow-growing, or easy to split while you are taking a GLP-1 medication, start with gentle nail care and regular cuticle moisturizer, then tell both your prescribing clinician and a dermatologist if the change persists. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes brittle nails and slower growth as problems patients have reported after significant weight loss during GLP-1 treatment, but current guidance does not prove that the medicine directly damages nails.
Do not assume that brittle nails prove a vitamin deficiency, and do not start high-dose biotin as a guaranteed fix. The evidence for biotin in brittle nails comes from a few small, non-placebo studies, and biotin can interfere with some laboratory tests.
What brittle nails during GLP-1 treatment may mean
GLP-1 medicines are used for diabetes and, in some products and doses, obesity treatment. During treatment, some patients report nail changes, including slower growth and brittleness, particularly after substantial weight loss. The AAD page updated February 17, 2026, presents these as reported associations and says more research is needed to understand effects over time.
That wording matters. A report that nail changes occur during treatment does not establish that the drug itself is the cause. Weight loss, changes in food intake, illness, stress, and unrelated nail conditions can overlap with the treatment period. The available guidance does not provide a nail-specific frequency, a confirmed biological mechanism, or a test that can identify a GLP-1 medicine as the cause in one person.

The safest approach is therefore protective rather than speculative: reduce additional trauma, keep the cuticles moisturized, monitor the pattern, and involve clinicians when the problem does not settle.
What the dermatology guidance actually says
- Patients have reported slower nail growth and brittle nails after significant weight loss while taking GLP-1 drugs.
- More research is needed to clarify the long-term effects of GLP-1 medicines on skin, hair, and nails.
- Moisturizing the cuticles is included among practical skin-care measures.
- If skin, hair, or nail effects do not improve with basic care, AAD advises contacting a dermatologist.
What has not been established
- There is no published number in the reviewed guidance for how often brittle nails occur among GLP-1 users.
- The sources do not establish a nail-specific causal mechanism.
- They do not identify a standard blood-test panel, referral deadline, or medication change that applies to every person with brittle nails.
A simple protection routine
The following routine is designed to limit further splitting while you and your care team work out what is happening. It is supportive care, not a cure for a medication side effect.
1. Moisturize the cuticles consistently
Apply a cuticle moisturizer as part of your normal skin-care routine, especially after washing your hands. The AAD specifically includes cuticle moisturizing in its advice for people taking GLP-1 drugs. Use a product intended for the cuticle and surrounding skin, and stop if it causes burning, rash, or swelling.
A moisturizer can reduce dryness and friction at the nail edge, but neither AAD nor the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements identifies a particular cream, oil, or ingredient as a treatment that reverses GLP-1-associated nail changes. Choose based on tolerability, fragrance sensitivity, texture, and cost rather than promises of stronger nails.
2. Reduce avoidable mechanical stress
Keep nails at a length that does not catch on clothing or objects, and file snags rather than tearing them. Avoid using a nail as a tool, picking at layers that are peeling, or repeatedly buffing a thin surface. These measures are common-sense protection against additional breakage; they have not been shown in the reviewed sources to treat the underlying reason for brittle nails.
3. Protect nails during wet or chemical work
Repeated soaking, detergents, solvents, and household chemicals can make already-fragile nails easier to split. Wear suitable protective gloves for cleaning, dishwashing, gardening, or other wet work, and dry your hands and nail folds afterward. If a glove traps sweat or irritates your skin, remove it, dry the area, and use a better-fitting option.
4. Be cautious with salon procedures
Pause aggressive filing, scraping, cuticle cutting, or removal of a coating if the nail plate is painful or separating. Tell a nail professional that your nails are fragile, and stop any service that causes bleeding or significant discomfort. No salon treatment has been established in the cited guidance as a way to prevent or cure a GLP-1-related nail problem.

Once a week, note which nails are affected, whether growth seems slower, where splitting occurs, and any pain, redness, swelling, discoloration, or separation. A dated photograph taken in similar lighting can help a clinician compare progression. Also record when the GLP-1 medicine started or changed, major weight changes, illnesses, and new products used on your hands or nails.

6. Give basic care enough time to observe a trend
Nails grow slowly, so a single day of improvement or worsening is not a reliable test of a product or routine. Keep notes and photographs on a regular schedule rather than checking repeatedly during the day. If the pattern continues despite consistent gentle care, that is useful information for your clinicians even though the guidance does not specify a universal waiting period.
Discuss weight loss and nutrition without self-diagnosing
A substantial calorie reduction can change what and how much a person eats. A 2025 advisory from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, American Society for Nutrition, Obesity Medicine Association, and The Obesity Society describes nutrition priorities during GLP-1 therapy and notes that rapid weight reduction can include loss of both fat and lean body mass. That is context for a treatment discussion, not proof that you have a nutrient deficiency or that a deficiency explains your nails.
The advisory summarizes STEP 1 as an average 13.6 kg weight reduction, consisting of 8.3 kg of fat mass (62%) and 5.3 kg of lean body mass (38%). Those are trial figures cited by the advisory; they do not predict an individual’s body-composition change and do not demonstrate a nail effect.

What to ask at an appointment
- Has my rate of weight loss or reduced appetite changed the amount and variety of food I can manage?
- How can I maintain an adequate overall eating pattern while taking this medicine?
- Could another health condition, medicine, or hand exposure explain the nail change?
- Do my symptoms warrant a dermatology examination?
- Should I bring a list of supplements, drinks, or over-the-counter products that I use?
- What signs would mean I should contact the office sooner?
Do not deliberately slow, stop, or change a prescribed GLP-1 medicine on the basis of brittle nails alone. Discuss the treatment plan with the clinician who prescribes it. The AAD guidance recommends clinician follow-up for persistent effects; it does not tell patients to stop GLP-1 therapy.
Biotin and other supplements: what the evidence supports
Brittle nails can occur with biotin deficiency, but brittle nails by themselves do not diagnose that deficiency. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says the evidence for biotin supplements and nail health comes from only a few small studies. The studies described in its fact sheet lacked placebo groups and did not report participants’ baseline biotin status, so they cannot show that biotin reliably strengthens nails in people taking GLP-1 medicines.
| Finding summarized by NIH | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Nail thickness increased by 7% in a subgroup of 14 patients | The difference was not statistically significant; this small result is not proof of benefit. |
| Nail thickness increased by 25% in a subgroup of eight patients | This was also a small, non-placebo finding and cannot establish effectiveness. |
These figures are from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheet accessed in 2026. They are not studies of GLP-1 users, and they do not establish a dose, duration, or success rate for your situation. Because the groups were so small and lacked placebo comparisons, an apparent change could reflect normal variation or other factors.

Why high-dose biotin deserves caution
NIH also warns that supplemental biotin can interfere with certain laboratory tests. Interference can produce misleading results, so tell every healthcare professional and testing laboratory that you take biotin, including the dose and product name. Do not start a high-dose supplement casually or treat a nail appearance as confirmation that you need one.

If your clinician thinks a deficiency or another medical issue is possible, follow the evaluation they recommend. The reviewed sources do not specify a universal nail-specific test panel, and testing decisions depend on your symptoms, medical history, diet, and medicines. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or delay needed testing while waiting for a supplement to work.
Do not confuse hair evidence with nail evidence
The current U.S. prescribing information for Wegovy (semaglutide) lists hair loss among common adverse reactions in the cited injection trials: 3.3% of treated patients versus 1.0% with placebo. The label says those hair-loss reactions were associated with weight reduction. This is hair data, not nail data, and it should not be repurposed as proof that semaglutide or another GLP-1 medicine causes brittle nails.
Similarly, dermatologist Steven Daveluy, MD, FAAD, told AAD that GLP-1 medicines can affect skin and hair, with some conditions improving and others, such as hair loss or facial appearance, potentially worsening. His statement is a broad discussion of skin and hair risks and benefits, not a nail-specific causal finding. A description of one side effect in a medication label cannot establish that a different body structure has the same risk.

When to contact your clinicians
Contact the prescribing clinician
Tell the clinician who manages your GLP-1 medicine when you notice persistent or worsening nail changes, particularly if they began during substantial weight loss or after a dose change. Bring your symptom timeline and the names of all supplements, including biotin. Ask before changing the dose, schedule, or medicine.
Ask for dermatology follow-up
AAD recommends seeing a dermatologist when skin, hair, or nail side effects do not improve with basic care. A dermatologist can examine the nail plate and surrounding skin and decide whether the appearance fits a nail disorder, trauma, infection, inflammatory condition, or another cause. The reviewed guidance does not set a specific number of weeks that everyone should wait or a single referral threshold.
Seek prompt medical advice for concerning changes
Contact a healthcare professional promptly if nail changes are accompanied by substantial pain, marked swelling, drainage, rapidly spreading redness, or sudden extensive separation. Those symptoms need an individual assessment rather than an assumption that they are a routine GLP-1 effect.
Choosing a cuticle moisturizer
Because AAD recommends moisturizing cuticles, a basic moisturizer is a reasonable optional product category. Compare products on practical criteria:
| Criterion | What to check |
|---|---|
| Intended use | Cuticle or hand moisturizer rather than a product marketed as a drug or guaranteed nail-strengthening treatment. |
| Ingredients and sensitivity | Read the label for fragrances or preservatives that have caused you irritation in the past. |
| Texture | Choose a texture you will use consistently; a heavier ointment may feel protective, while a lighter lotion may be easier during the day. |
| Cost and availability | Use a product that fits your budget and can be replaced easily. No brand has been established as superior in the cited guidance. |
Stop using any product that causes a rash or worsening discomfort and ask a clinician for advice. A cuticle moisturizer is an optional comfort and protection measure, not evidence that the underlying cause has been identified.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling the medicine the proven cause: Current AAD guidance describes an association reported after significant weight loss, not confirmed direct causation.
- Assuming deficiency from appearance: Brittle nails can have multiple explanations, and appearance alone does not diagnose low biotin or another nutrient problem.
- Promising that biotin will fix the nails: NIH finds only small, non-placebo studies, including results that were not statistically significant.
- Using hair-loss statistics as nail statistics: The Wegovy label’s 3.3% versus 1.0% figures concern hair loss in injection trials, not brittle nails.
- Stopping treatment without advice: Discuss persistent side effects with the prescriber instead of changing a prescription yourself.
- Waiting indefinitely while symptoms worsen: Persistent nail problems that do not improve with basic care merit dermatology follow-up.
- Layering on multiple products at once: Introducing several polishes, removers, oils, or supplements together makes it harder to recognize an irritant or know what changed.
- Ignoring the surrounding skin: Pain, swelling, drainage, or rapidly spreading redness should be assessed rather than covered with a cosmetic product.
A practical appointment checklist
- Write down the date you first noticed brittleness, peeling, ridges, or slower growth.
- List the GLP-1 medicine, dose, recent changes, and approximate weight-loss timeline.
- Record supplements, especially biotin, plus other medicines and significant illnesses.
- Photograph the nails and note whether one nail or many are affected.
- Describe exposures such as frequent handwashing, cleaning chemicals, nail polish, gel removal, or occupational wet work.
- Ask whether you should continue your current nail-care routine, whether a dermatology referral is appropriate, and whether any testing is warranted.
- Bring the actual supplement bottle or a complete label if you use biotin or a combination product.
Questions readers often ask
Are brittle nails a recognized GLP-1 side effect?
AAD says patients have reported brittle nails and slower growth after significant weight loss while taking GLP-1 drugs. The guidance does not provide a frequency or prove that the medicine directly caused the change.
How common is this problem?
The cited sources do not give a nail-specific rate among GLP-1 users. Avoid treating an anecdotal report or a hair-loss percentage as an estimate for nails.
Should I stop my injection if my nails split?
No. Do not change or stop a prescription based solely on nail appearance. Tell the prescriber, document the pattern, and ask whether an examination or another plan is appropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan a cuticle oil or cream reverse the problem?
Moisturizing the cuticles is an AAD-recommended basic-care step. No particular brand or ingredient has been shown in the cited guidance to reverse a GLP-1-associated nail change.
Should everyone with brittle nails take biotin?
No. Brittle nails can occur with biotin deficiency, but appearance alone does not establish deficiency. NIH describes only a few small, non-placebo studies and warns that supplemental biotin can interfere with laboratory tests.
What if my appetite is much lower on treatment?
Tell your care team if reduced appetite or rapid weight loss is making it difficult to eat a varied diet. The 2025 nutrition advisory discusses preserving overall nutrition and notes that rapid loss can include lean body mass, but it does not diagnose a nail-related deficiency.
When should I see a dermatologist?
AAD advises dermatology follow-up when nail, hair, or skin effects do not improve with basic care. Seek prompt medical advice for substantial pain, marked swelling, drainage, rapidly spreading redness, or sudden extensive nail separation.
Does the Wegovy hair-loss number predict nail problems?
No. The U.S. label reports hair loss in 3.3% of treated patients and 1.0% of placebo patients in cited injection trials. Those figures concern hair, not nails, and cannot be used to calculate nail risk.

Bottom line for protecting weak nails
Use cuticle moisturizer, protect fragile nails from repeated wet work and mechanical trauma, and monitor changes over time. Brittle or slow-growing nails have been reported in the setting of significant weight loss during GLP-1 treatment, but the cited evidence does not prove direct medication causation or identify a universal treatment. Discuss nutrition and the pace of weight loss with your care team, avoid assuming a deficiency, disclose any biotin use before laboratory testing, and ask a dermatologist to evaluate changes that persist despite basic care.

Should I stop or reduce my GLP-1 dose?
Do not change or stop a prescription based solely on brittle nails. Contact the prescribing clinician and discuss the pattern, weight loss, and other possible causes.
Will biotin strengthen my nails?
NIH describes only a few small studies without placebo groups, including a nonsignificant 7% thickness increase in 14 patients and a 25% increase in a subgroup of eight. These findings do not prove benefit for GLP-1 users.
Why tell my clinician about biotin?
High supplemental biotin can interfere with certain laboratory tests and produce misleading results. Report the product and dose to healthcare professionals and testing laboratories.
What basic care can I try?
Moisturize the cuticles, limit wet and chemical exposure, avoid picking or aggressive filing, keep nails from catching, and monitor changes with dated photographs.
