The safest routine is simple: keep a model-matched cover on the aluminum Kindle whenever it is in a bag or briefcase, isolate it from keys and grit, and remove fingerprints with a clean, soft cloth using light passes. For the 2026 aluminum Kindle, verify that accessories list model LP38MA before buying. A cover reduces handling damage, but it cannot make the device scratch- or dent-proof.
What is different about the aluminum Kindle?
Amazon’s 2026 aluminum Kindle uses an 80% recycled-aluminum matte housing. The compliance information identifies the aluminum release as model LP38MA. Those facts matter when you choose a case: an accessory that fits another Kindle generation can leave corners, edges, buttons or the screen surround exposed.
“Matte” describes the appearance and surface finish; it is not a published promise of a particular scratch, dent or fingerprint-resistance rating. No manufacturer or standards-body figure has been published for scratch frequency, dent frequency, fingerprint visibility or comparative coating durability. Avoid claims that the housing is a certain number of times more resistant than another Kindle.

- Abrasion: keys, sand, metal filings and grit can rub against the housing or screen.
- Impact and pressure: a dropped bag, a hard object in the same compartment or weight stacked on the Kindle can deform an edge or corner.
- Residue: skin oil, food, lotion and other material can leave marks or make grit adhere to the surface.
A good cover addresses transport hazards first. Cleaning and storage habits handle the remaining risks.
Choose a cover that actually fits LP38MA
Amazon’s safety guidance says: “When carrying your Kindle in a bag or briefcase, keep a cover on to avoid scratches.” Treat that as the baseline rule, not an optional extra for occasional trips.
Full-wrap cover
A full-wrap cover encloses the front and back when closed. It is the most complete choice for a Kindle that travels in a backpack, handbag, briefcase or luggage because the closed cover places a layer between the device and nearby objects. Confirm that the listing explicitly includes the aluminum-housing device and model LP38MA. A cover made for a similar-looking Kindle can still expose a corner or press against the wrong control.

Amazon lists slim magnetic-attach covers for devices with aluminum housings. This design can reduce bulk while keeping the front and back covered when closed. Check the attachment and closure before relying on it for transport: the cover should remain closed in the compartment you use, and its edges should not leave a hard object in direct contact with the Kindle.
Separate sleeve or compartment
A separate sleeve or a dedicated bag compartment is a second layer, not a substitute for a correctly fitted cover. It helps keep keys, chargers, pens and other hard items away from the Kindle. Do not put the Kindle in a compartment with loose sand, metal fragments or unprotected tools.

Interior condition matters as much as exterior material. A soft-looking cover can still scratch if its lining collects sand or metal dust. Inspect the inside before inserting the Kindle and remove any debris immediately.
Set up your bag to reduce dents
Dents result from impact or concentrated pressure. The available manufacturer guidance does not publish a dent-rate test, drop-test result or impact rating for the aluminum model, so handling choices are the practical way to lower risk.
- Close the cover before the Kindle leaves your hand. Do not place an uncovered device into a bag “just for a moment.”
- Use a separate compartment. Keep keys, coins, pens, chargers, camera hardware and other hard items elsewhere. If your bag has no divider, use a clean sleeve around the covered Kindle.
- Keep pressure off the screen and corners. Do not stack books, a laptop, a water bottle or other heavy objects on top of the Kindle. Position it flat only when the compartment does not flex against it.
- Check the compartment for grit. Sand, metal filings and broken plastic can become pressure points when the bag moves.
- Place the Kindle where it will not be crushed. Avoid the bottom of an overfilled bag and locations under a seat, in a tight luggage pocket or beside a rigid frame.
- Close zippers and flaps fully. A partially open bag lets the Kindle slide against rough surfaces or fall when the bag is lifted.
These steps reduce exposure; they do not guarantee that an aluminum housing will remain dent-free after a fall or heavy impact.
Remove fingerprints without damaging the screen or finish
Fingerprints are usually a cleaning problem, not a reason to scrub harder. Amazon’s instruction is to clean the screen with a soft cloth and be careful not to wipe it with anything abrasive.
Safe cleaning procedure
- Lock or power off the Kindle. A dark screen makes smears easier to see and prevents accidental taps while you wipe.
- Wash and dry your hands. Remove fresh lotion, food residue or grit before touching the device again.
- Use a clean, soft, dry microfiber cloth. Reserve a cloth for screens rather than reusing one that has picked up dust, metal particles or household cleaner.
- Brush away loose particles without pressure. If you can see grit, lift it away gently before making wiping passes. Rubbing a hard particle across the screen is more damaging than a fingerprint.
- Wipe with light, overlapping passes. Work from one side to the other instead of pressing in circles over a single spot. Use a fresh section of cloth when the first section becomes oily.
- Inspect under even light. If a mark remains, repeat with another clean section rather than increasing pressure or adding an abrasive substance.
- Clean the cloth after use. Store it in a clean pouch so it does not collect grit between cleanings.
Do not use abrasive fabric, powders, polishing compounds or aggressive scrubbing. Do not place food, oil, lotion or other residue on the device; Amazon specifically warns against spills involving those materials and other abrasive substances. Avoid spraying any liquid directly onto the Kindle. If the model’s own instructions specify a cleaner or water-resistance procedure, follow those instructions instead of improvising.

Choosing a cleaning cloth

Keep grit and residue out of the closed cover
Many scratches happen while a device is closed, when a small particle is trapped between the cover and the screen. Before closing a folio or magnetic cover, spend a few seconds checking both surfaces.

- Shake out loose debris away from the Kindle. Do not grind it into the lining with your fingers.
- Wipe the screen and the inside of the cover with separate clean cloth sections if either surface is dusty.
- Keep the Kindle away from workshop benches, beaches, construction dust and pockets containing coins or keys unless it is enclosed in a clean sleeve.
- Do not eat over the open device. Food particles and oily residue can transfer to the screen, then attract grit when the cover closes.
If the cover’s lining repeatedly sheds fibers or traps debris, stop using it for transport until it can be cleaned safely or replaced. A cover that is technically model-compatible is not protective if its interior becomes abrasive.
Control heat, cold and moisture
The aluminum release’s stated operating range is 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F). Do not leave it in a hot car, on a sun-heated dashboard or in a freezing trunk. Keep the device within that range during use and normal handling.
Keep liquids away from the Kindle and follow the water-resistance instructions for your exact configuration. The available guidance does not establish that every aluminum configuration is waterproof, so do not treat the metal housing as permission to expose the device to rain, spills, pools or steam.
If a spill occurs, stop handling the Kindle, keep additional liquid away and consult the model’s official safety and support instructions. Do not test the device by plugging it in while moisture may remain.

A practical protection routine
Before leaving home
- Confirm the cover is closed and that its listing or packaging identifies LP38MA compatibility.
- Check the inner cover and screen for grit.
- Put the covered Kindle in a separate sleeve or compartment away from keys and hard accessories.
- Make sure the bag is not packed so tightly that objects press into the Kindle.
During use
- Place the Kindle on a clean, dry surface rather than directly on sand, a rough tabletop or a workshop bench.
- Keep food, oil, lotion and loose metal objects away from the screen and housing.
- Use clean hands when possible, especially after eating or applying lotion.
- Close the cover before moving the device.
After use
- Lock the screen and remove visible fingerprints with light passes of a soft, dry cloth.
- Inspect the cover interior before closing it for storage.
- Store the Kindle in a moderate-temperature, dry location, not in a vehicle or a damp bag.
Weekly inspection

A fingerprint or oily smear
Lock the screen and repeat the dry-cloth procedure with a clean section of microfiber. If the mark persists, check whether it is on the cover rather than the Kindle. Do not escalate to abrasive polish or forceful scrubbing.
A suspected scratch
Stop rubbing the area. Remove the Kindle from the cover, inspect the cover lining for grit and determine whether the mark is on the cover, screen surface or housing. Clean only with a soft cloth. Do not sand, buff, scrape or apply metal polish; those actions can remove finish or spread debris. If the mark affects readability, touch response or a structural seam, use the official support path for the model.
A dent or bent corner
Stop carrying the device in a tight or damaged cover and keep pressure off the affected area. Do not try to reshape aluminum with pliers, a hammer or a heated tool. A dent can indicate impact beyond a cosmetic mark, so check the screen, buttons, charging connection and cover fit. If anything is loose, cracked or malfunctioning, seek manufacturer service guidance rather than continuing to flex the housing.
Repeated marks after cleaning
Inspect the entire transport system: cover compatibility, interior lining, bag compartment and nearby objects. Replacing a contaminated cloth without removing the original source of grit will not solve the problem.

Use this buying checklist
Before purchasing a “Kindle aluminum cover” or a full-coverage Kindle case, check each point:
- Model: LP38MA is listed explicitly, not merely a broad Kindle family name.
- Coverage: The closed design protects the front and back, and does not leave a corner exposed.
- Attachment: For a slim magnetic design, the listing says it is intended for an aluminum-housing device and the closure holds during transport.
- Interior: The lining is smooth, clean and unlikely to trap grit.
- Bulk: The covered Kindle still fits without pressure in the compartment you use.
- Cleaning access: You can remove the cover or wipe its interior without scraping the Kindle.
- Accessory claims: Ignore unsupported promises of a specific scratch-resistance multiplier, dent-proof construction or guaranteed finish life.
